I’ve just returned from a successful reconnaissance and re-supply mission into enemy territory, the Walmart in Weatherford.
I was only there for a few minutes but I spotted just two Putin suicide volunteers, ie non-maskers. Both were well over 50 and probably over 60, too late for a Darwin Award since, strictly speaking, those non-coveted awards apply only to people who might still reproduce if they did not self-eliminate. Looking on the bright side, though, maybe they’ll contract Covid and die before they can vote again. (I am just out of fucks to give at this point.)

I guess the part i have a hard time understanding is that these guys perpetrating all of this shit are dependent on the rest of us following the rules when they decide to break them. They give no thought whatsoever that there are tipping points in all things and seem to believe that there will be no consequences for their actions.

My own outrage is building and has been at a furious boil over these last few months and even I have to admit, there are times where I wonder why the crowd just doesn’t say “fuck it” and overrun these supposed guardians of law and order and leave them stripped of weapons, clothes and dignity, bruised and battered in the streets. I am glad that they have resisted that temptation but I suspect that a great deal of it is that these people are better humans than I am.

I know they don’t matter to the results. But the do (or at least can) matter to the narrative.

I try to discount individual polls and look more at trends. So, yes, two new polls showing Trump leading in Florida and Arizona, but they look like outliers. At least in the sense that Trump is leading, but a lot of states have been within the margin of error, so yeah, lots of toss ups (which is annoying given… waves at everything)

The problem with this analysis is in the part that claims people didn’t know what they were voting for in Trump. They did. Many wanted exactly what they got: a racist, misogynistic theif who validates their own lack of morality. The rest believed the anti Hillary propaganda and believed she was worse even with what they knew. I do not know any Trump voter who was truly unaware of what he was, except possibly by degree.

Hey, Charles, new data point for you. Today, I loaded a page (the one just downstairs, 270 posts) on my iphone (ios13 latest, in Safari) and it did the repeated reload thing, making it impossible to read, of course. It also did this in firefox, also in firefox with images turned off.

So, in Safari, I loaded this page, which is much shorter and loaded without problems. Then I loaded the previous page in another tab — and it loaded nicely and I was able to scroll through it.

Go figure.

Even the French in 1940, as disparaged as they were and are, fought well when they were in an even fight. What happened at Sedan was the result of the German Army’s best planes, tanks, and soldiers against a grade “B” reserve division that was spread too thin. I often remark that it was in the mud of the Marne river that the idea of “honorable combat” was snuffed out. The American Civil War had put the nations of the world on notice that the traditional rules of war were doomed, but even up to the Boer War the leaders of Europe kept telling themselves that wars would continue to be fought with all sides “fighting fair.” Took entire generations of men getting blown to bits or left to rot in the mud to put those beliefs to rest.

The Polish armed forces were actually relatively modern for the era, and they gave the Germans a serious fight. The problems were A) they were fighting a two-front war (Germans and Soviets), B) their most modern weapons were in short supply, and C) their defensive plans assumed rapid relief from their treaty partners (Britain & France).

The thing that set the Cuirassiers apart was their highly visible uniforms and equipment, polished breastplates and plumed helmets don’t belong in the same century with machine guns and quick-firing artillery.

Yes, although the stories of Polish soldiers on horseback charging German tanks is largely a myth. The Polish armed forces were actually relatively modern for the era, and they gave the Germans a serious fight. The problems were A) they were fighting a two-front war (Germans and Soviets), B) their most modern weapons were in short supply, and C) their defensive plans assumed rapid relief from their treaty partners (Britain & France).

Reminds. I finished a new model plane this week. This is a 1/72 PZL P.37C, the standard Polish bomber in 1939. This was one of the best bombers in the world at the time, with many export inquiries, but it had only entered service the previous year and only about a hundred were available to throw against the might of the Luftwaffe. Even in a desperately one-sided campaign almost half of them survived and fled to Romania, where the local air force used them against the Soviet Union later.
The kit was “ZTS” brand, made in communist Poland around 1975.

This New Yorker cover is everything to me right now.

Yesterday I was creating an assignment about Immigrants in the 1920s and was watching part of the PBS documentary The Jewish American. Guess who made several appearances - the notorious RBG.

I ended up using about 20 minutes of the doc that included a discussion about college quotas in the 1920s in the assignment. One really interesting tidbit was that colleges put quotas on the number of Jewish students they would accept and not Catholics or African Americans because there were so many Jewish applicants (far more than any other non-white or non-Protestant groups).

Plus, even an extremely lethal disease can still be transmitted. It’s not how lethal the disease is, but how fast you can transmit it.

Smallpox was and tuberculosis is extremely lethal. They’ve both been with us for thousands of years, because people reproduce faster than the diseases kill.

On the Covid-19 front here in the Nebraska Panhandle, PPHD has moved every county in the Panhandle except Garden and Deuel into “moderate risk” territory. Only three towns in PPHD have had no cases (mine in Morrill, Lisco and Llewellyn in Garden).

We now have 98 active cases with a 6% positivity rate. The total number of cases have reached 835. Women and girls are still 2/3 of cases. The largest age group is 20-29, followed by 10-19 and 40-49.

Twelve new cases were recorded yesterday.

Coming home from Denver, we stopped in Sterling, Colorado for gasoline (because Colorado has a mandatory mask order, I figured it was safer than Sidney, Nebraska).

Nevertheless, I had to stop in Sidney for a different reason. Steeling myself for covidiots, I braved my way into Fat Dogs (logo: You Are Nowhere), and lo! Every single person in the place, including small children, were wearing masks. Not a bare face in the place.

This New Yorker cover is everything to me right now.

I ended up using about 20 minutes of the doc that included a discussion about college quotas in the 1920s in the assignment. One really interesting tidbit was that colleges put quotas on the number of Jewish students they would accept and not Catholics or African Americans because there were so many Jewish applicants (far more than any other non-white or non-Protestant groups).

It’s not just that there was lots of Jewish applicants; it’s that Jews obsess about studying and learning the way evangelicals obsess about embryo worship. That’s why we have so many doctors, lawyers and physicists.

All of them did, actually.

And cavalry had its place during the war as well. Better mobility than infantry. A number of advantages over motorized vehicles, especially in tight terrain. And fuels with grain or grass instead of requiring gasoline.

Though it helps to realize that they’re more like mounted infantry (dragoons) than something you expect to charge with sabers drawn.

And there was a great demand for mules and donkeys by the otherwise fully motorized US Army during the Italy Campaign. Need something that can handle steep terrain and narrow paths to get supplies up those ridges. (Native bearers did a lot of this equivalent work in New Guinea over in the Pacific; see the
Kokoda Trail campaign.)
