I was shocked that my Dad’s super obnoxious Trumper casual friend acknowledged it was over the day before it was called. I’m not rubbing it in. I’m taking a cue from Joe and spreading the faith. I feel good. I’m dreading the Covid winter but Biden’s giving me hope that we can move into a better era.

Want to know why we LOST seats and are barely handing on in the House. Abagail was right—it was that “Defund The Police” shtick the Republicans whacked us with. Whether you like it or not Democrats have to hold the center and we sure lost seats by not holding more of the center.

AZ: Biden up 18,553; FFVCS keeps cutting away at the advantage but hopefully will not be enough
GA: Biden up 10,196; Gotta believe they are getting close to finishing the count
NV: Biden up 31,464; Biden now at 50.1 percent of the vote
PA: Biden up 42,858; Fully expect Biden to surpass FFVCS’ victory margin of 44,292 in 2016
Looking like it will wind up 306-232, though AZ could cut it down to 295-243.

The Dems lost seats because they basically swept the board on close races two years ago. Including in places like Orange County CA where they swept the county. They’re probably going to lose two of those seats by fewer than 3,000 in each district, which means (depending on redistricting in two years), they’ll have a chance of winning them back

Michael Parkinson, surely? He had a friendly demeanour, his line of questioning was honed by his journalistic background (His book on Mohammed Ali- whom he had interviewed in a classic episode of his talk show- is an absolute joy to read.), and introduced Billy Connolly to an unsuspecting UK wide audience. What’s not to like?

Ocasio-Cortez has, according to her website, two offices - one in each borough her district covers (Bronx and Queens), but I’ll agree that AOC is punching well above her weight as a freshman Congresswoman. I get that she is is quite web-savvy, and knows very well how to leverage even negative publicity into public exposure (and it doesn’t hurt that so much of the criticism really is “sexist BS” or mindless left-baiting) - but then again, she is probably the highest-profile real *leftist* in a generally centrist legislature - she doesn’t have too many choices in avoiding obscurity.

I’m not gonna beat up on her but I want her to understand that “socialism” doesn’t resonate with most people. Her issues aren’t the problem imo, it’s selling social democracy as Democratic socialism in a country that sees the word socialism and the Internationale plays in their head.

So here’s the interesting thing about Harris being VP… there has always been talk about Newsom wanting to run for president one day. With Harris as VP, that realistically means Newsom’s chance at the nomination is now likely 2028 or 2032 at the earliest (either Biden serves one term, Harris runs in 2024 and loses opening the door for 2028; or Biden serves two terms, Harris is the nominee in 2028; or Harris wins in 2024 pushing it back to 2032). So, what if he appoints himself? Probably very unlikely but possible
Alternative idea: he appoints a placeholder, and then runs for the seat in 2 years (passing up a second term as Governor) - this allows him the freedom to run for president whenever there’s an open election while gaining national experience.
I also don’t see him running for DiFi’s seat half way through his second term, either.
Be interesting to see what effect his ambitions have on the choice

I’m convinced that social democracy is easier to sell in less diverse areas. It’s why I think Norway and Sweden were able to implement it in a post WWII world but people there start embracing the right as the country grew more diverse. LBJ’s Great Society got rejected by the way overly fetishized WWC that my family comes from because LBJ believed that the promise of the New Deal belonged to all Americans regardless of race. Likewise, we need to get rid of the mindset pushed by the Bernies of the world that working class just equals white. It’s an outdated construct and it’s always been.

The thing is incremental progress has always been part of it. Those who see FDR as our ideal President ignore that in the initial implementation of Social Security agricultural workers were excluded from the benefits and that was done to appease the Southern conservatives who didn’t want to help African-Americans who were a great deal of the agricultural workfoce down South in the 30’s. Same with ACA. ACA isn’t meant to be the be all of health care and our goal of universal coverage. It’s a starting point.

To that end, I think abolishing the filibuster - for good - is possibly one of the better ideas as far as fixing our democracy. I’m all for the Senate as a deliberating body, but the minority should not have as much power as they do in the Senate in an era when the country is not strongly partisan enough in either direction to achieve 60 members.
It rose to prominence in the 50’s when the likes of Thurmond were using it to block civil rights legislation. There needs to be some way to restore the balance between of powers between the three branches and I really blame unitary executive theorists like Cheney and later Barr in the executive branch and obstructionist dicks like Ted Cruz and Rand Paul in the Senate in the legislative branch for that as well as self fancied “originists”: in the judiciary like Thomas and Alito and now Barrett.

The Dems lost seats because they basically swept the board on close races two years ago. Including in places like Orange County CA where they swept the county. They’re probably going to lose two of those seats by fewer than 3,000 in each district, which means (depending on redistricting in two years), they’ll have a chance of winning them back
My theory? The Democrats gained seats because the suburban Republican women couldn’t vote against Trump in 2018 — so they voted against their representative instead as their only way to object to Trump. This time Trump was on the ticket and they could vote directly against him, while supporting all down ticket Republicans. They never saw the GOP as a problem — only Trump himself.

I am just saying it’s going to happen. I don’t like it either but if there’s a token Republican say at Commerce or Transportation, I’m not gonna get pissed. If he puts one of these people at an important position, I won’t like it. I just think we have to temper our expectations after the most nakedly partisan administration of our lifetimes. And if we want to push the party to the left, let’s give him a Senate in the midterms so we’ll be able to do it.

I’m not a huge fan, but she’s been on the right side of several issues and I wouldn’t have a problem with her getting an ambassadorship or something. But Kasich (and Meg fucking Whitman along with a few others)—hell to the no.

Telling racists that we’d stop spending so much time raising a fuss over making them to tolerate people of color or LGBTQ+ people is pandering to them. Calling reforms to make life better for everyone social democracy instead of socialism is like calling it the ACA instead of Obamacare, it is a marketing strategy that comprises nothing.
