Church today was not bad. The woman with the Trump mask was still wearing it today… LOL. I got to talk politics with one of my conservative gamer friends, and it actually wasn’t bad. He was respectful and agreed with me at point, and it was good.

I was shocked that my Dad’s super obnoxious Trumper casual friend acknowledged it was over the day before it was called. I’m not rubbing it in. I’m taking a cue from Joe and spreading the faith. I feel good. I’m dreading the Covid winter but Biden’s giving me hope that we can move into a better era.
John Kasich, who did not deliver Ohio to Dems, is saying folks like @IlhanMN, who did deliver Minnesota, are the problem.

Honestly I’m tired of both of them. AOC implied Omar was why Biden won Minnesota which is nonsense and I think she has no clue what swing Congressmembers deal with. Likewise Kasich can zip it too about how Biden needs to listen to Republicans.

Oh and for Kasich. Sure would have been nice if he had barnstormed Ohio. But he didn’t.
Updates on the ongoing ballot counts:
AZ: Biden up 18,553; FFVCS keeps cutting away at the advantage but hopefully will not be enough
GA: Biden up 10,196; Gotta believe they are getting close to finishing the count
NV: Biden up 31,464; Biden now at 50.1 percent of the vote
PA: Biden up 42,858; Fully expect Biden to surpass FFVCS’ victory margin of 44,292 in 2016
Looking like it will wind up 306-232, though AZ could cut it down to 295-243.

Defund the police was stupid. Extremely stupid. Abigail’s beef is with messaging and she’s right but that won’t stop people from smearing her as unsympathetic to people who want LEO reform. Acting like all cops are assholes is stupid too. How I went from someone who was vocal on this shit in the Obama years to being a “moderate” is frustrating. The Dems lost seats because they basically swept the board on close races two years ago. Including in places like Orange County CA where they swept the county. They’re probably going to lose two of those seats by fewer than 3,000 in each district, which means (depending on redistricting in two years), they’ll have a chance of winning them back

Who was the greatest talk show host that ever lived?
(Correct question for the answer “Alex Trebek.”)
Michael Parkinson, surely? He had a friendly demeanour, his line of questioning was honed by his journalistic background (His book on Mohammed Ali- whom he had interviewed in a classic episode of his talk show- is an absolute joy to read.), and introduced Billy Connolly to an unsuspecting UK wide audience. What’s not to like?
Oh, and he was presenter of a fake telethon style broadcast on a Hallowe’en night called “Ghostwatch”, which scared the bejeezus out of viewers, mainly due to Parkinson’s reputation and his acting exactly as one would expect Parkinson to react.
The only thing dumber than him saying these things is you elevating him like he’s anything other than a racist hack billionaire heir.

Actually, Rep. Ocasio-Cortez has, according to her website, two offices - one in each borough her district covers (Bronx and Queens), but I’ll agree that AOC is punching well above her weight as a freshman Congresswoman. I get that she is is quite web-savvy, and knows very well how to leverage even negative publicity into public exposure (and it doesn’t hurt that so much of the criticism really is “sexist BS” or mindless left-baiting) - but then again, she is probably the highest-profile real *leftist* in a generally centrist legislature - she doesn’t have too many choices in avoiding obscurity.
re: #12 John Hughes

Is criticism of other people not allowed?
Your “criticism” reflected no knowledge of the people on this website, especially of the person you were supposedly responded to. It showed a lack of understanding of what we have said on this site since Trump took office about our place in the world and how we would be viewed after, and also showed a lack of understanding of what we hear mean when we say “we will find a cure.” So, no, yours wasn’t criticism but your usual reaction to comments that is tiring and not constructive. It’s why most choose to ignore you, which I shoukd have done.

Forever.

The left of the party considers the people who are why my state is reliably Democratic and has been able to accomplish our goals to be DINOs. Suburban Va isn’t Brooklyn politically. Play to what works where you are. That’s all I’m asking. Ffs I hate this all or nothing shit.
So here’s the interesting thing about Harris being VP… there has always been talk about Newsom wanting to run for president one day. With Harris as VP, that realistically means Newsom’s chance at the nomination is now likely 2028 or 2032 at the earliest (either Biden serves one term, Harris runs in 2024 and loses opening the door for 2028; or Biden serves two terms, Harris is the nominee in 2028; or Harris wins in 2024 pushing it back to 2032). So, what if he appoints himself? Probably very unlikely but possible
Alternative idea: he appoints a placeholder, and then runs for the seat in 2 years (passing up a second term as Governor) - this allows him the freedom to run for president whenever there’s an open election while gaining national experience.
I also don’t see him running for DiFi’s seat half way through his second term, either.
Be interesting to see what effect his ambitions have on the choice

There is no one-size-fits-all approach to political policy. There are some things we can all agree on, like universal health care, but it has to be packaged and sold differently to different areas because we’re not all the same. You can sell a brand of socialism to Minnesota, or California, but if you try to do that in Texas, you’re liable to get shot.

You can sell it in Nebraska. Megan Hunt belongs to the DSA. So do I. It wasn’t socialism that got me voted out, it was being an atheist. Megan Hunt’s strongest attacks on being an atheist came from Democrats, not Republicans (similar to Eric Swalwell’s attacks on Pete Stark).
Nebraska is the only state in the Union with no private electric companies. Almost no private water companies. A state-run company which owns all the gas lines in the state.

My personal beliefs are very hard core left; lot’s of Marx leavened with Smith & Keynes. But that only plays without freakout in a tiny handful of urban enclaves in the US. Never mind that the police, fire departments, libraries, etc are all examples of Socialist policy, the word has been abused so much that the vast majority of Americans are terrified of it. Since I’m more interested in leaving a better world behind than in being dogmatic - economically or religiously - I work for slow incremental progress.
That said, loud people like AOC (who having won re-election is no longer a freshman :) ) sitting in a safe place are the ones that can shift the discussion so that it by contrasting it against their “extreme” positions :D we are making our incremental changes.
That is how we’ll get police reform and all the other things that people need done once we have the deadlock in the senate cracked by election, appointment out of the senate or indictment.

There’s this thing about provisional ballots in the South: they are most often the result of a challenge to the eligibility of someone who tries to vote on election day. Guess what kind of voter is most likely to be challenged. The trick is to teach our electorate to demand a provisional ballot if they are refused a regular one.

Yeah mea culpa about the offices. I just think she doesn’t realize things. Most freshman reps don’t get a seat making the platform. Jennifer Wexton didn’t and neither did Abigail. She needs to understand that this is a coalition and it would be even if we had a social Democratic Party. I’m not gonna beat up on her but I want her to understand that “socialism” doesn’t resonate with most people. Her issues aren’t the problem imo, it’s selling social democracy as Democratic socialism in a country that sees the word socialism and the Internationale plays in their head.

re: #90 Anymouse 🌹🏡😷
You can sell it in Nebraska. Megan Hunt belongs to the DSA. So do I. It wasn’t socialism that got me voted out, it was being an atheist. Megan Hunt’s strongest attacks on being an atheist came from Democrats, not Republicans (similar to Eric Swalwell’s attacks on Pete Stark).
Nebraska is the only state in the Union with no private electric companies. Almost no private water companies. A state-run company which owns all the gas lines in the state.
I’m convinced that social democracy is easier to sell in less diverse areas. It’s why I think Norway and Sweden were able to implement it in a post WWII world but people there start embracing the right as the country grew more diverse. LBJ’s Great Society got rejected by the way overly fetishized WWC that my family comes from because LBJ believed that the promise of the New Deal belonged to all Americans regardless of race. Likewise, we need to get rid of the mindset pushed by the Bernies of the world that working class just equals white. It’s an outdated construct and it’s always been.

The problem is selling anything in a country where the factual discourse is subject to a narrative created by bad actors who have a tight lock on all means of communication.
Americans are no dumber than people anywhere else. They don’t have very different wants and needs. The difference is that they exist in an all-pervasive media environment that dictates reality, and as a whole, they absorb it uncritically, and do what they are told.

Biden plans immediate flurry of executive orders to reverse Trump policies
By Matt Viser, Seung Min Kim and Annie Linskey, WaPo
In depth look at transition plans and how the likely divided Congress is going to affect things going forward. And how the Trump transition team is slow walking things.
Biden’s top advisers have spent months quietly working on how best to implement his agenda, with hundreds of transition officials preparing to get to work inside various federal agencies. They have assembled a book filled with his campaign commitments to help guide their early decisions.

Ever-complexifying conspiracy theory
re: #91 William Lewis
The thing is incremental progress has always been part of it. Those who see FDR as our ideal President ignore that in the initial implementation of Social Security agricultural workers were excluded from the benefits and that was done to appease the Southern conservatives who didn’t want to help African-Americans who were a great deal of the agricultural workfoce down South in the 30’s. Same with ACA. ACA isn’t meant to be the be all of health care and our goal of universal coverage. It’s a starting point.
The “missing” Trump votes is going to be the next Benghazi thing the GOP beat to death, isn’t it?

So, now explain how urban, diverse, areas of the US, are clearly closer to “social democracy” than more ethnically unified regions?

1. Ignorance - both with respect to what government does and how policies effect them
2. Policy priorities - not everyone votes on economics, in fact I suspect (don’t have evidence) that a lot of people on the left and right vote more on social issues than economics
3. Failures of the Democratic Party to organize and fund efforts in those regions
These aren’t offered to say that there’s no racism or that racism isn’t a problem. But society is complex because it is made up of people who are themselves complex

Gee, I dunno, maybe because the more ethnically unified regions are filled with fascist racist fuckheads who think “socialism” is a bad word? Just because America’s “less ethnically diverse” areas aren’t socialist, that doesn’t invalidate the point. It just means America has a ways to go to making socialism happen.

To that end, I think abolishing the filibuster - for good - is possibly one of the better ideas as far as fixing our democracy. I’m all for the Senate as a deliberating body, but the minority should not have as much power as they do in the Senate in an era when the country is not strongly partisan enough in either direction to achieve 60 members.

It rose to prominence in the 50’s when the likes of Thurmond were using it to block civil rights legislation. There needs to be some way to restore the balance between of powers between the three branches and I really blame unitary executive theorists like Cheney and later Barr in the executive branch and obstructionist dicks like Ted Cruz and Rand Paul in the Senate in the legislative branch for that as well as self fancied “originists”: in the judiciary like Thomas and Alito and now Barrett.

The Dems lost seats because they basically swept the board on close races two years ago. Including in places like Orange County CA where they swept the county. They’re probably going to lose two of those seats by fewer than 3,000 in each district, which means (depending on redistricting in two years), they’ll have a chance of winning them back
My theory? The Democrats gained seats because the suburban Republican women couldn’t vote against Trump in 2018 — so they voted against their representative instead as their only way to object to Trump. This time Trump was on the ticket and they could vote directly against him, while supporting all down ticket Republicans. They never saw the GOP as a problem — only Trump himself.
