Edinburgh’s Hogmanay 2020 - Online Celebration
Fare Well is a new poem by Jackie Kay that bids farewell to 2020 and wishes a better year for 2021
Narrated by David Tennant and others, Fare Well underscores the UK’s largest swarm drone display, recorded in the Scottish Highlands and cut to spectacular views above Edinburgh.

Part One of Fare Well looks at the year gone by – the funerals and weddings cancelled, the griefs and despairs which have been collective, with a feeling that the world has become a village.

[…]

Whilst part one of Fare Well looked at the year that’s gone by, the second phase turns to look at us today and to give thanks for the many acts of community and kindness displayed by so many across the country. Jackie Kay’s narrative takes an optimistic tone, reflecting on the good of the human spirit and the sense of togetherness that has emerged from 2020.

Part two of Fare Well includes images of “WE” in the skies above Edinburgh – a message from Scotland of universality and commonality – with “WE” translated into many languages including French, Gaelic, Arabic, Greek, Korean, Mandarin and Thai.

[…]

Whilst part one and two of Fare Well looked at the year gone by, the finale turns from the celebration of Hogmanay, the end of the year, and looks with optimism to the future. Taking inspiration from a poem by Robert Burns (Sketch New Year’s Day), Scots Makar Jackie Kay echoes Burns’ question about the night of Hogmanay and asks what did ‘yesternight deliver’ and like Burns, finds that there is hope, and that it is found in nature. Burns finds hope in looking up at the skies and says that something in us never dies.

This is profoundly moving. In a far less eloquent message, I say let’s bury that bitch 2020 in lime.

With reference to the tail of the previous thread: next step is “It was TRUMP who stole the election!”.

While it won’t be accepted by all, think about all the Q ppl.

They dogmatically believe Q is Trump or someone close to him and everything is going according to the plan, i. e. Trump himself is “untouchable”.

After the 20th some will remain in denial (Trump is leading the Resistance/shadow govt., victory is just around the corner!), but most will understand they’ve been had.

Who do they turn against?

They won’t. They will continue with their delusions. No matter what happens my deluded relatives STILL insist that Pizzagate is real, Hillary and Oprah are witches, Joe Biden has been killed and replaced with an imposter and Tom Hanks is in death row at Gitmo. Trump is deploying his White Hats to combat Black Hats in underground tunnels. Bill Clinton, Obama and Michelle have all been executed for pedophilia…oh…and JFK will reappear on the 6th to announce that the mass arrests of Democrats are taking place…

They are THAT F’N BRAINWASHED…

I’ve recently run across some MAGAts who do not realize that the United States is a member of the United Nations. One guy thought that the Covid hoax’s presence throughout the world can be explained by these other countries all being UN members, “the UN tells them what to do.”
I’ve known for years that people would often separate US and UN forces in discussions of the Korean war, but I thought it was a just a distinction between “us” and “the rest of the UN.” Another one insisted that UN forces fought in the Vietnam war because several of the involved countries, Thailand, New Zealand, etc. were UN members. He disappeared when I pointed out the US was also a UN member.
Has anyone else encountered this? Do they really not know?

I rebuilt my Gentoo Linux system Thursday night into Friday. Gentoo is a distribution for nerds; its package manager builds the packages from source, allowing you to customize the compiler options system-wide. (In my defense, I built this when I was in college, I was young and stupid.) Chromium takes over 12 hours to compile on my six-core box with 8 GB RAM.

re: #81 Shiplord Kirel: Fan of USPS, Goodyear, and Oreo

The list of what they don’t know is close to infinite.

An amazing number of Americans believe that the US provides most if not all of the UN peacekeeping forces deployed around the world. It can be a bit of a shock to their sense of national importance when the reality is pointed out to them. Currently the US has 31 UN peacekeepers deployed around the world in various locations. Some of those are police officers, some are technical specialists in mine clearance and the like.

Being taught to fish by a Republican:

Republican: Okay so the first thing you need to know is that there aren’t many big fish in this pond. Most of them are in my pond and my friends ponds. But I put a few in here for you and I bet if you work at it you can find them.

Student: (grabbing rod) So what do I do now?

R: Well you need a hook on that thing. I have one here but it’s pretty cheap and doesn’t work that well but you’re learning so it will be fine.

S: Why can’t I have a better hook?

R: You have to EARN a better hook, you can’t just expect one to be given to you.

S: Whatever. What’s next?

R: You need to bait your hook. I have the bait you asked me to bring but I had to charge you double for it because of convenience fees, import charges and handling fees.

S: Wait, import charges?

R: It’s complicated. Okay, are you ready to fish?

S: Yes, absolutely.

R: Okay, great. Let’s do this! Oh, forgot one thing.

R grabs the rod, snaps it in two and hands it back to S.

S: Hey, what the hell?!

R: That’s to help teach you that life is unfair, but I’m sure you’ll find a way to fix it up in no time!

S: But…

R: Sorry, I’ve got a business meeting to get to. Good luck!!

From the last thread (I’m behind, as usual)

re: #134 A Mom Anon

Some good news:

We had to sit down with the Kid and help him pick out new insurance, since the temp agency he’s working for/through offers total crap passing for health/dental insurance. Dental is important for him, because even though he rarely has a cavity, he has a 5K bridge in his mouth from an accident where his two front teeth were broken off at school (which makes me think it wasn’t an”accident” but I digress). So we found a plan with a higher than normal deductible-the bridge is about 14 yrs old, that will cover 80 percent of the cost if he’s in network, etc. It’s a lot more expensive, but still under 50 bucks a month. Last night he told me that they wanted 104 bucks from him for February’s premium. I told him we’d get after it today and see what’s what. He did it himself without any help, chatted with someone live on line and they fixed it for him. This may not seem like much, but for a young man who struggles with executive functioning, it’s a BFD. He said his goal for the year is to be more financially responsible and pay off his car. He also hugged me and thanked me for trying to teach him all this stuff. I cried a little. It’s been such a long road to here, OMG.

{{{MomA!}}} Something to brighten a mother’s heart, seeing your young adult apply the lessons you’ve tried for many years to teach him. And being thanked for it! Treasure that warm glow, it’s yours by right.

I’ve had a couple of moments like that lately, watching my 22-year-old handle his Safeway job, juggle his classes, get ready to start driving school now that we can finally afford to insure him. Have teared up a couple of times when the sweet little stinker hugged me and told me thanks for my help. *happy sniff*

I wondered why Trump has a bug up his butt about Thune today.

Moscow Mitch McConnell once again refused to allow $2,000 survival checks to struggling families in a rare New Year’s Day session of the Senate. To be precise, he had his minions Sen. John Thune and Sen. John Cornyn do the dirty work this time, first blocking Sen. Chuck Schumer’s effort to bring up the House bill, then Sen. Bernie Sanders’ request to bring both the House bill and the ridiculous McConnell poison bill addressing Trump conspiracy theories. Trump’s bluster over the $2,000 survival checks clearly didn’t extend to actually doing anything to make it happen, so he lost. DK

Finally some good news. I survived the semi-annual “Battle for the Mendenhall Valley”. Fortunately no damage to the homestead though there was some debris on the driveway.

A massive offensive was launched at 2359 hours and was essentially over by 0045 hours. I think many of the participants had passed out by that hour. Did not notice any bodies lying around so they must have survived.

Reports are that a peace treaty was imposed until 1800 hours on July 3, 2021.

Just noticed a few stray rounds going off. Probably haven’t heard about the treaty.

I read the decision. It was very succinct, actually; neither GOHMERT! nor the purported electors have standing. GOHMERT! fails because he was filing suit as a member of Congress, and the Supreme Court ruled that individual Congresscritters do not have standing to sue when it is an institutionalized injury to the body as a whole; and the purported electors fail because their alleged injury is caused by officials in the State of Arizona and not Vice President Pence. Therefore, SO ORDERED and SIGNED this 1st of January, 2021, Happy New Year, Motherfuckers!

OK, I know this is the NYPost, but this may explain more than Section 230 or confederate traitors why Trump wanted to sink the NDAA. It’s because the NDAA also included banning anonymous shell companies. Now firms have to report who the beneficial owner of these companies is. It was brought in as a way to close a HUGE loophole in money laundering. Nobody wants to think the president of the US is engaged in money laundering, but after 4 years of Trump, hell, I don’t know.

The US government on Friday adopted legislation that bans anonymous shell companies by forcing firms to report their true owners.

The ban was included in a $740 billion defense bill vetoed by President Trump last month. Senators voted 81-13 on Friday to override Trump, after the House did so Monday.

Under the new policy, US-registered companies will have to report to the government their real owners, rather than cite other corporate entities designed to conceal that information.

Anti-money laundering advocates celebrated the development.

“In my view (and if Treasury writes bold regs), it’s even more important than the Patriot Act, best law of its kind since Bank Secrecy Act passage in 1970,” tweeted Josh Rudolph, a fellow for malign finance at the Alliance for Securing Democracy.

A 2011 World Bank report found that the US led the world in anonymous shell companies, with 10 times more anonymous entities than the top 41 tax havens combined, according to Reuters.

Greg Baer, CEO of the Bank Policy Institute, told the wire service last month that “the global law enforcement and national security community will reap enormous benefits from anti-money laundering policy that stops bad actors from using shell companies to shepherd crime across international borders.”

*snip*

The anti-shell company provision reportedly was advanced by Treasury Secretary Steve Mnuchin and Democratic Sen. Mark Warner of Virginia.

nypost.com

Closing this loophole is a huge big deal. A lot of the shenanigans that went on with the Malaysian sovereign wealth fund 1MDB was carried out through anonymous shell companies, for example. From my personal perspective, I wonder how much impact that is going to have on my evil too big to fail employer. I would assume that corporations, LLCs and the like will have to name their beneficial owners before they can access banking services. I’m pretty sure that was the case before in a lot of instances (because of Know Your Customer legislation and regulation) but this tightens the observation further.
