There is a baby cardinal outside my kitchen window in some hibiscus bushes . Mom and dad are bringing it food which means we have a nest nearby. Such a tiny thing, it doesn’t look like it can fly, and so cute. How to keep Cleo away is going to be the fun part. It’s hard to get a good photo from my window, but the little thing is almost in the center of the photo.

An Alaska state lawmaker who had called flight attendants “mask bullies” and clashed with airline employees on video over mask rules is now banned from Alaska Airlines for her “continued refusal to comply” with the mask policy, the airline said in a statement.

The restriction on Republican state Sen. Lora Reinbold will make her job more difficult: Alaska Airlines operates the only regular flights between her home north of Anchorage and the state capital in Juneau.

A Republican operative who helped propel QAnon into the mainstream back in 2017 has just been elected to a leadership role in a local Republican party in South Carolina.

Endorsed by BOTH Mike Flynn AND Lin Wood, who, by the way, is running for State Repub chair here in South by dog Carolina.

And, here’s what “Tracy Beanz” had to say about that:

Diaz said integrity came back to the Horry County Republican Party with Saturday’s leadership results. It can be restored at the state level if the support for Wood continues to grow and he knocks McKissick off in three weeks.

I probably know why so this is more of a why are we still doing it this way question.

Because we have an incredibly stupid and arbitrary limit of 435 seats in the House. So, even though our population continued to grow, it didn’t grow fast enough.

The fact that nobody in Congress has even broached the idea of expanding the House is just incredibly annoying to me. It’s been 435 for 110 years. In the 1912 election that meant the average congressional district was 210,583 people. Now it’s going to be 761,952. I’m not saying the House should be 1575 members to match the ration for 1912… but under the Wyoming Rule, we’d have 547 seats and 40 states would gain seats in the House.

Looks like Turkey is going into “full shutdown” from 29 April to 17 May.

From what I’ve heard from my Turkish friends, President Erdoğan said it was to bring cases down ASAP, because they’re desperately trying to save this summer’s tourist season, which begins in June. International tourism is a significant segment of Turkey’s economy and the government likely reckons their battered economy can’t take too many more hits.

Americans who have been fully vaccinated against the coronavirus may be able to visit countries in the European Union this summer, the head of the bloc’s executive body said.

Update:

Alaska Airlines bans Eagle River lawmaker for violating COVID-19 mask policy

The ban had cast uncertainty on how Reinbold might have rejoined the Alaska Senate when legislative work resumed Monday. No other airline has regularly scheduled direct flights between Anchorage and Juneau.

But Reinbold embraced an alternate travel solution: On Sunday, she posted to her Facebook page describing “a long unexpected trip to Juneau by road/ferry system.” To reach a port serviced by a ferry to the capital city on Sunday, she would’ve had to drive hundreds of miles from Eagle River to either Skagway or Haines, which also would require going through part of Canada.

She made it to Juneau and was on the Senate floor at the state Capitol on Monday morning.

Canada does allow Alaskans (and other travelers) to drive thru Canada non-stop only. No overnight stays in motels or use of any restaurants. Fuel purchase is self-serve only. In the Yukon, you have less than 24 hours to travel from Haines/Skagway, Alaska to Beaver Creek. Any rest stops require sleeping in your vehicle.

At the Canadian border you are given a windshield sticker displaying the date/time you entered Canada And the date/time you MUST be out of the country. The RCMP will be looking for these tags on any out of country vehicle.

The fine for missing the deadline is large and the Canadians do not have a sense of humor when it comes to their citizen’s health.

Researchers at Italy’s University of Palermo (UP) programmed a humanoid robot from Japanese manufacturer SoftBank Robotics with software that models human cognitive processes, along with a text-to-speech processor, so it could vocalize its decision-making process while completing tasks. The software enabled the robot, Pepper, to retrieve relevant data from its memory and determine the correct way to respond to human commands. After encoding etiquette rules into Pepper, the UP scientists asked it to set a dinner table, and either enabled or disabled its inner speech to observe the effects. When inner speech was disabled, the robot refused to perform tasks that contradicted the programmed rules, but could not explain its reasoning to the researchers. UP’s Arianna Pipitone says hearing a robot voice its decision-making process boosts the transparency between humans and robots, which could have ramifications for cooperative tasks.

Death Metal

English extreme metal band Venom, from Newcastle, crystallized the elements of what later became known as thrash metal, death metal and black metal, with their first two albums Welcome to Hell[18] and Black Metal.[19] Their dark, blistering sound, harsh vocals, and macabre, proudly Satanic imagery proved a major inspiration for extreme metal bands.[20] Another highly influential band, Slayer, formed in 1981. Although the band was a thrash metal act, Slayer’s music was more violent than their thrash contemporaries Metallica, Megadeth, and Anthrax.[21] Their breakneck speed and instrumental prowess combined with lyrics about death, violence, war, and Satanism won Slayer a cult following.[22] According to Mike McPadden, Hell Awaits, Slayer’s sophomore album, “largely invent[ed] much of the sound and fury that would evolve into death metal.”[23] According to AllMusic, their third album Reign in Blood inspired the entire death metal genre.[24] It had a big impact on genre leaders such as Death, Obituary, and Morbid Angel.[21]

I got through basic training and to my unit in Germany and near the beginning of my time there I was snooping through the PX and found their new tape that I hadn’t heard about. I knew them from that single so I bought it. I got back to my arms room (I was the battalion armorer by then) and dropped it into my tape player and cranked it.

The first thing I heard was the staccato drum beat of Larry Mullins intro to “Sunday, Bloody Sunday” and was hooked.

re: #169 William Lewis

There’s a show on one of the Nat Geo channels called Unusual Animal Friends. I saw an episode yesterday about a little boy on the autism spectrum who fell in love with chickens his mom decided to keep for eggs. Turns out the chickens were the best therapy for her little guy. He began to walk and then run to keep up with them and began talking to them for the first time. He holds and loves on them like a puppy and they cuddle right up to him.

But of course neighbors bitched and it turns out it wasn’t legal for her a have the chickens even though she had called the county and had been told it was ok. They let her have a year to keep the chickens before they would make a final decision. In the end they won and the little guy got to keep his favorite critters. I did a bit of digging and apparently chickens are used for therapy animals, especially for kids with autism. Which is cool.

I saw them during the “Pop Mart” tour. I don’t generally get into huge stadium concerts.

But when you hear 50,000 people singing “In The Name Of Love” the shiver’s go up and down your spine and you’re glad to be part of that something bigger than yourself.

This is a new school opened just last year. I’ll bet the owners, a couple named Centner, have some connection to the vitamin/ supplement/non-traditional healthcare racket.

In Miami the rules are different:

A full-floor penthouse atop the 24-story Capobella tower in the heart of Miami Beach — nicknamed Copabella Sky Villa — is being sold by owners purported to be Miami’s most generous philanthropic couple. They are not, however, just giving the place away; their asking price is a cool $17 million. The couple in question are David and Leila Centner, who made their fortune when they sold their Highway Toll Administration company (someone had to administer all that cash) for an undisclosed but clearly substantial amount.

variety.com

Tonight, at her private school in the Design District, Republican mega-donor and Miami philanthropist Leila Centner is hosting a forum for Esteban “Steve” Bovo, who is running as the conservative candidate in the nonpartisan race for Miami-Dade County mayor.
miaminewtimes.com

Miami-born tech executive David Centner has recently returned to South Florida, where he and his family are becoming an important part of the area’s philanthropic and physical landscapes. After successful corporate exits in New York — his most recent company, Highway Toll Administration, was acquired by Platinum Equity’s $6.5 billion global buyout fund — Centner and his wife Leila are even more focused on humanitarian efforts. With the help of a $40 million donation to the Miami arm of the Newark-based Teachers Village Project - a national move toward building affordable housing for educators - the Centners are instrumental in bringing to Miami a mixed-use project, currently in the design phase and slated to offer workforce rental housing and condos, as well as office space, retail shops and a hotel. The Centners and their foundation support over 50 philanthropic organizations

What a stupid waste of time and money. I don’t think Newsom is nearly as vulnerable to recall as Gray Davis was, but it is still irritating.

CA Republicans are incapable of winning any statewide office in any normal election. So cheap tricks like unjustified recalls are the only chance they have.

Early polls have it like 55-40 against. And if things are more back to normal by November, it’s highly unlikely he will get recalled. But the Dems should get someone on the replacement ballot just in case.

Texas has learned nothing. A decade ago, they had a cold snap that caused a major blackout and grid failure. They did nothing, because it would cost money to winterize annually, when there’s more profit to be had. Now, they’re worried that the grid will fail during the summer.

Sounds like a 3d world nation that can’t have nice things.

Proposed 30% US tax credit for e-bike purchases gains support in Congress

Americans are getting closer to a federal tax credit for electric bicycles, a proposal that could be similar in concept to the electric car and motorcycle tax incentives already on the books.

AD

Back in February, a new bill was proposed known as the Electric Bicycle Incentive Kickstart for the Environment (E-BIKE) Act.

It was introduced by Representatives Earl Blumenauer (D-OR) and Jimmy Panetta (D-CA), and stipulated a 30% tax credit in the US for a purchase of an electric bicycle.

The incentive would be capped at a maximum of $1,500 and would apply to electric bicycles priced under $8,000.

Cool. I doubt it will happen in time for me.

I’ve known a lot of chickens and I’ve known a lot of dogs. Even though the Chickens were food, they were smarter, better “people” in many ways. That’s not to say things against dogs, just that Chickens are far smarter than people realize. Those fucking dinosaurs are much smarter than people realize and I love dealing with them.

My brother refers to his chickens as “vicious little dinosaurs”. And they have a decent degree of “don’t give a fuck” regarding other animals in certain circumstances. Cats trying to see what was interesting in the compost heap while they were there got pecked, and sometimes chased by 3-4 chickens at once.
