Live From Easter Island: Mahani Teave’s Tiny Desk (Home) Concert

The Tiny Desk is working from home for the foreseeable future. Introducing NPR Music’s Tiny Desk (home) concerts, bringing you performances from across the country and the world. It’s the same spirit — stripped-down sets, an intimate setting — just a different space.

Tom Huizenga | June 24, 2021
Our Tiny Desk (home) concerts have visited many faraway places – from Lang Lang in China to Mdou Moctar in Niger – but none as far-flung as Easter Island. The 63-square-mile isle, called Rapa Nui by its residents, is located some 2,000 miles off the coast of Chile.

And yes, classical music thrives there – thanks largely to Mahani Teave, the pianist who offers this engaging performance from the music school she co-founded. As a child, Teave saw the first piano brought to the island in 1992 and dreamed of becoming a world-class concert pianist. It was a dream she fulfilled, but just as she was poised to launch her international career, an even stronger dream tugged at her heart.

In 2014, she broke ground on the Toki School of Music, aiming to teach traditional and classical music to Easter Island’s children. Constructed from over 2,500 used tires and 60,000 cans and bottles, the building, with its cisterns and solar power, is a testament to Teave’s vision for sustainability.

Even the straight-back yellow chair Teave uses as a piano bench in this performance seems repurposed from her kitchen. She begins with a sparkling Allemande by Handel, followed by a beguiling performance of a Chopin Nocturne. Teave closes with an ancestral song , featuring sisters Eva and Tama Tucki Dreyer. The story follows Rapa Nui’s first king, whose reign coincided with a natural disaster. It’s a metaphor, Teave says, for our planet, to “leave this place a little bit better than how we found it.” With her fine playing and her music school, Teave has done exactly that.

SET LIST
George Frideric Handel: “Suite No. 5 in E, II. Allemande”
Frédéric Chopin: “Nocturne in B-flat minor, Op. 9, No. 1”
Traditional: “I hē a Hotumatu’a e hura nei”
MUSICIANS
Mahani Teave: piano
Eva Tucki Dreyer: vocals
Tama Tucki Dreyer: vocals

Graduations are a time for celebration, not only for those achieving the milestone but their family members and friends alike. But unfortunately, not all students are treated the same way or given the respect they deserve. Instead of being able to enjoy her high school graduation peacefully with her peers, a hijab-wearing Muslim student was subjected to harassment and boos from parents and peers alike.

To make matters worse, the school’s principal blamed the student—identified as Huda—for the reactions she received because she mentioned Palestine in a speech she gave to students. According to the Council on American-Islamic Relations (CAIR) New York chapter, the speech Huda gave was approved by the principal prior to the incident.

Trump’s trifecta of disgraced, disbarred, or soon to be disbarred lawyers: Cohn, Cohen, and Rudy.

How many others are soon to follow?

Powell and Wood for two more. Everyone in Trumpworld is corrupt as fuck, and Powell, Wood, and Rudy have to deal with the Dominion suit too (there was a hearing today).

That didn’t go well for the Trumpists.

My wife works elder care. One of her new clients is a French Canadian woman with dementia who has lived here for decades but now increasing only speaks French. It turns out that she likes Willie Nelson, so we borrowed “Best of Willie” from the local library and I burned it for her. That’s fine. But the funny thing is my wife keeps calling Willie Nelson Nelly Wilson (English not her first language either). I told her it would be a great name for a tribute band and now she’s trying to get me to get the rights to the name (not seriously).

The musician had previously taken a break from Mumford & Sons back in March when he tweeted praise for “Unmasked,” a book by Andy Ngo, a right-wing writer-activist, that attacked far-left militant groups collectively known as antifa.

Marshall, who plays guitar and banjo, said that the other band members wanted to continue with him. However, he opted to leave in order to “speak freely without them suffering the consequences.”

Marshall was accused online of endorsing the far right, but said Thursday that “nothing could be further from the truth. I condemn unequivocally all political extremism, be it of the Right or Left.”

He said that “as long as I am a member of the band, speaking my mind on the evils of political extremism could bring them trouble. My loyalty and love for them cannot permit that.”

Politicians really like taking credit for bringing home the bacon, and there won’t be any if enough GOP Senators don’t vote for it. He even thought it could get 70 votes, which makes sense, because if it’s passing anyway, you want credit for it.

Villages in South Moravia have suffered major damage after being hit by a reported tornado on Thursday evening. A spokesperson for the fire service in the region told Czech Television that there had been massive destruction in seven villages and that it could not be ruled out that there were people beneath buildings that had collapsed.

Hrušky in the Břeclav area was among the worst hit, with the deputy mayor saying half of the village had been flattened. The Hodonín area has also borne the brunt of the destruction.

Amateur videos and photos posted on social media showed very strong winds as well as damaged vehicles and buildings with windows blown out and roofs blown off.

A meteorologist told Czech TV that it had likely been a force three or four tornado and was the strongest seen in the country’s modern history.

The governor of South Moravia called a meeting of the regional crisis team and the army is on alert.

Didn’t Pelosi say the house wouldn’t even vote on it unless the human infrastructure bill was sent out of the senate on reconciliation first? Seems to me any compromise bill will be dead if it is dependent on that? What republican will vote yes on a trillion dollar infrastructure package if the senate passes a partisan reconciliation deal first?

Apparently the building was sinking but not in a sinkhole kind of way.

A researcher at Florida International University said the building was constructed on reclaimed wetlands and was determined to be unstable a year ago.

The building was sinking at a rate of about 2 millimeters a year in the 1990s, and the sinking could have slowed or accelerated in the time since, according to a 2020 study conducted by Shimon Wdowinski, a professor in the Department of Earth and Environment at Florida International University.

“I looked at this morning and said ‘Oh my god.’ We did detect that,” he said of the Champlain Towers South.

There’s the answer, most likely.

An EF-3 or EF-4 is a literal force of nature. Last weekend, I was reading the story of an EF-4 that struck a rural Minnesota vacation community further up the lake from the cabin where we were staying, back in 1969. It physically lifted cabins from their concrete slabs and hurled them into the lake; there is, if rumors are to be believed, a mostly or fully intact cabin lying in the bottom of the lake to this day.

Sadly, there’s been at least seven killed. There’s no such thing as tornado shelters here - just like there’s also no such thing as seismic engineering, either. If there was ever an appreciable earthquake, let’s say a magnitude 6, buildings here would collapse like they were made of playing cards. A 6.7 magnitude quake here would be pretty much universal destruction. In Japan, it’d be Tuesday.

I had a former boss who moved here from Connecticut. He wondered why all the houses here have basements, even near lakes, where the water table is extremely high and there is a significant cost to keeping the basement dry. Without even looking up from our terminals, my co-worker and I responded over our shoulders, “Tornadoes.” He kinda stammered back, “Wait, you guys have those here?” “Yes, and on the first Wednesday of every month, we test the sirens. You’ll hear that, too.”

re: #86 Dopamine Fish

I had a former boss who moved here from Connecticut. He wondered why all the houses here have basements, even near lakes, where the water table is extremely high and there is a significant cost to keeping the basement dry. Without even looking up from our terminals, my co-worker and I responded over our shoulders, “Tornadoes.” He kinda stammered back, “Wait, you guys have those here?” “Yes, and on the first Wednesday of every month, we test the sirens. You’ll hear that, too.”

A former student of mine (ironically enough from the area that got hit last night) once tried to argue that tornadoes are impossible here in Czech Republic because the meteorological conditions that produce them simply don’t happen in this part of Central Europe. Of course, I politely pointed out that she’s wrong on that assertion - tornadoes can happen in this part of Central Europe, though it is exceedingly rare.

I also pointed out to her that earthquakes can happen here, too. There’s seismic faults in the northwest of Czech Republic and geologists have warned that those faults are capable of generating a magnitude 6.0 to 6.5 earthquake, which would be very destructive in that region.

Hopefully, my former student is fine as is her family, who still live in the Hodonín area. I’ve sent her a message on FB.

The other issue in this part of the country, from what I’m told, is that basements are kind of expensive in granite conditions, and radon may be a bigger problem in basements here.

I spent a good part of my childhood in our Illinois basement. It had my dad’s darkroom, my mom’s sewing room, laundry, and then a big room with a tile floor where I played hockey with a plastic puck.

Oh, forgot to add: spent many summer nights down there waiting for tornado warnings to lapse.

Maybe Carlson goes for this defence:

At a pre-genocide court hearing on March 15, 1994, for “the incitement of citizens against each other”, Habimana would claim that RTLM broadcasters were “small fish” compared to RTLM executives such as Ferdinand Nahimana, and thus bore little responsibility for the genocide.

Habimana was RTLM’s most popular presenter, with strong oratory skills.

Okay. I went and looked it up. We’ll see what happens. I’m of the opinion that “something is better than nothing”, though I would, of course, love to see the Democrats run roughshod over the Republicans. But I know they can’t if they want to have any hope of negotiating on voting rights or other non-reconciliation bills.

President Biden has said he won’t sign the bipartisan bill unless its partnered with a reconciliation bill with his human infrastructure proposals, and Joe Manchin is onboard, though we don’t know to what extent. Voting rights will not pass, period. Police reform might if they can work out a deal with Tim Scott, because it would be a bad look for the GOP to reject a deal made by their point man, their only black Senator.

It doesn’t have to come first. The House just won’t vote on the bipartisan bill until the Senate passes the reconciliation bill. Pelosi can hold it as long as she likes.

People like to say that earthquakes don’t happen on the east coast of the US. — not often, but when they do, granite and other earth allow them to propogate 1000s of miles and there is nothing done here that mitigates those quakes.

The 2011 Piedmont Earthquake in Virginia cracked the Washington Monument.

The 1886 Charleston Earthquake pretty much destroyed everything General Sherman didn’t.

en.wikipedia.org

The shock was felt as far away as Boston, Massachusetts, to the north, Chicago, Illinois, and Milwaukee, Wisconsin, to the northwest, New Orleans, Louisiana, to the west, and across water to Cuba to the south, and Bermuda to the east.

Interestingly, a reporter from the Charleston newspaper moved to San Francisco to get away from future earthquakes. He was there in time to cover the 1906 earthquake there, and was called upon by the newspaper to help people there understand how to survive after the quake.

Arizona Senate President Karen Fann, a Republican, declined several invitations from CNN to appear on air, to explain the cockamamie circus in Maricopa County (as if she could), so their reporter Kyung Lah caught up with Fann in the Arizona Capitol parking lot. In the course of the five-minute interview, Lah notes that all of the cameras and video feeds at the Coliseum are controlled by One America News Network (OAN), the “official broadcast sponsor” for the audit. Lah’s tone is skeptical, prompting Sen. Fann to ask, “Are you saying OAN is not a credible news source?”

“Yes,” says Lah, that’s exactly what she’s saying. Fann gets pissy and says, “Oh, I’ll remember that, CNN says OAN is not credible.” How could anyone think this is not a credible news outlet?

If you’re feeling edgy, ask the patriot in your life how they feel about moving the 4th of July celebrations to the 3rd.

Not quite on the subject but in Utah, there are two “patriotic” holidays. There’s July 4th, for the obvious reason, and July 24th, Pioneer Day, which celebrates the day Brigham Young first saw Salt Lake valley. When I lived in Utah in the 1990s, you can guess which one was more celebrated. Seriously, it was the Pioneer Day parade.

Well, in 1999, July 4th was on a Sunday, and since the dominant religion believes that Sunday is the Sabbath and nothing outside of churchgoing should happen on the Sabbath, there was no 4th of July parade scheduled in Salt Lake City that year. Well, there are quite a few non-Mormons in Salt Lake City who were quite offended by this. When it became clear that there really wasn’t going to be a 4th of July parade on Sunday, July 4th, a bunch of citizens and suchlike got together and whipped up a very good 4th of July parade on rather short notice.

This year, July 4th is on a Sunday, and based on this listing from one of the local TV stations, it looks like all of the festivities are being offset to July 3rd or July 5th, although I did not see Salt Lake City proper listed.

abc4.com

Yeah, I know it’s just a parade, but you had to live in Utah in the 1990s to understand why putting together a parade to thumb the nose at the Mormon Church was such a triumph.

Cellars are not common here, unfortunately. There’s really nowhere to run.

When we moved to Houston, we didn’t have a house with a basement or cellar. What we were told to do was go to the bathroom and if we had enough time, pull a mattress over us as we crawled into the tub. The rationale was bathrooms were small, had small windows, had lots of plumbing in the walls, and were probably the most structurally secure place in a house.

I lived over 20 years in Texas and never saw a tornado. The only time I saw a tornado was when I stood across the street from Temple Square in Salt Lake City as a tornado roared overhead. I’d been reading a book in the mall bookstore (it was about Vera Nabokov, wife of Vladimir Nabokov) on my lunch hour, heard an explosion (it was a transformer being hit by the tornado) and wandered out to the mall entrance. There I saw the actual tornado go over Temple Square but I had no idea it was a tornado. After it went away, I went back in to the bookstore and kept reading until my lunch hour was over. I went back to work to find all of my coworkers were packing up to leave. “Tornado,” they said. “Tornado? Uhm, so that’s what it was?”

In May, Pastor Arthur Pawlowski of the Street Church in Alberta was also arrested, along with his brother, for organizing and holding “an illegal in-person gathering” and “requesting, inciting or inviting others” to join them, according to the Calgary Police Service.

Pawlowski, who is Polish, drew parallels between the arrest and incidents he witnessed while growing up behind the Iron Curtain in Poland.

It’s funny how the Bible is inerrant and infallible until it isn’t, to wit, Romans 13:1:

Let everyone be subject to the governing authorities, for there is no authority except that which God has established. The authorities that exist have been established by God.

(For the record, the nascent Colonial Methodists weren’t having any of it when John Wesley sent them a letter basically telling them they needed to be subject to George III, per Romans 13. That was a big NOPE.)

Plenty of fossils about if you’re in the right rocks. Others not so much depending on both the age; e.g. pre-Cambrian, or that the rocks themselves have been folded and cooked a few times; e.g. metamorphics like quartzite, in such a way that fossil traces are unlikely to remain.

Also depends on how old of fossils or remains you are looking to find. There were sinkhole/caves found at Valley Forge, PA that included a few large caches of bones. (Pleistocene period IIRC.)

What next? We find out that Lysá Hora is a supervolcano like Yellowstone?”

(Lysá Hora is a popular mountain here and most Czechs are well aware of the USA’s Tornado Alley)

The Czech Hydrometeorological Institute has a reputation for being, shall we say, wildly inaccurate - hence the dark humor.

Our valley is pretty well protected against tornadoes and such, but as happened five years ago, a massive local supercell cloudburst sent torrents of water down the valley and flooded out the lower village.

We are located well above the creek, but our cellar ran full with water spilling in from the street, the storm cellars were overfilled and water was rising up over the curb.

Timelapse of yesterday’s eruption, from the “close” camera. It’s not that close, really, but the perspective and angle of view (of the lens) compresses the distance significantly. Everything is larger than you think it is.

Starts off slow, then we get a neat show of a lava river and examples of lava hardening… then a rest, then the camera is set to zoom in a bit closer for the main event near the end, then finally the camera is turned a bit to see the streams of lava flowing the other way (eastward in Melidalir valley.)

I suggested that to a fellow who ran a stand selling corn on the cob: offer them for a deposit of one or two Euro, more than they are worth and people would probably forego the deposit take lots of them home.

But again, that was not possible because of limited supply.

Unfortunately, it’s only in Czech, but looks like a tornado might also have touched down and caused structural damage in the village of Stebno, which is in the northwest of Czech Republic.

“Everything suggests it was a minor tornado. However, it must still be confirmed with an on-site investigation, and the strength of the phenomenon will be assessed according to the damage found. So far, we have seen broken trees, and collapsed roofs”, Jana Ehertová from the Ústí nad Labem branch of the Czech Hydrometeorological Institute (CHMI) told ČTK.

On the other hand…

“If he’s gonna tie them together, he can forget it!” Graham reportedly ranted. “I’m not doing that. That’s extortion! I’m not going to do that. The Dems are being told you can’t get your bipartisan work product passed unless you sign on to what the left wants, and I’m not playing that game.”

According to the South Carolina Republican, he was unaware of how much his colleagues conceded until Politico relayed Biden’s comments to him — and he proceeded to blow up.

The MAGAt fantasy is that the AZ audit proving fraud and that Trump was the real winner will begin a domino effect, as states will be forced to either run their own audits will overturn the fraud or that the courts will finally have the grounds to overturn the election results in Trump’s favor.

That none of this will happen and that the results of the audit will be greeted with laughter and derision doesn’t compute with them.

The fraudit is intended to do two things:

1) Establish the official narrative of the Big Lie and get widespread media coverage of it, to give their cause legitimacy in the eyes of middle America;
2) Fraud and grift.

That’s it. Everybody involved already knows Biden won the election. They know they aren’t going to find any REAL evidence of anything. They also know that nothing they do at this point can physically overturn the election, even if they did find widespread fraud; that’s simply not in the list of potential legal outcomes at this point. Joseph R. Biden, Jr., is President of the United States, no matter what these chucklefucks do. (Likewise, as much as it pains me to say it, any hard proof of active Russian hacking or physical interference in 2016 would not have prevented Trump from being President, though it may have bolstered the case to have him impeached.) Therefore, the only conclusion is that they are doing this for attention and to further their own selfish cause.

IMHO, the only reason a “deal” was reached in the first place was that Mitch figured he had Biden right where he wanted him. Pass an otherwise disappointing bill by the slimmest of margins, but do so while cutting the spending down as far as possible, leaving the TCJA intact, and divesting the original bill of all that “socialist” spending that he convinced Sinema and Manchin would never get GQP support.

What seems to have caught him off-guard is that Manchin would sign off on reconciliation for the “socialist” spending with TCJA rollbacks in exchange for the WH agreeing to the bipartisan “deal.” Or that the Dem leadership would quickly making passing the “deal” contingent on the reconciliation bill getting passed as well.

Trump’s coordination with Russians to manipulate the outcome of elections, or extorting Ukraine to interfere in our election on his behalf is evidence towards criminal charges and impeachment.

Florida man yo

Guy gets arrested for 1/6 insurrection. He’s interviewed in his Florida home. He then says that he was accompanied by his pastor and his pastor’s adult son who was a church leader:

Now, Lesperance, his pastor, James Varnell Cusick Jr., and his pastor’s son and the church’s vice president, Casey Cusick, face multiple charges over their alleged role in the deadly riot, according to criminal complaints released on Thursday that were filed in the U.S. District Court in Washington.

Lesperance, Cusick Jr., and Cusick could not immediately be reached by The Washington Post late on Thursday. It was unclear whether the trio had retained attorneys. The Florida men are among hundreds now charged in connection with the Jan. 6 insurrection, including many who were turned in by relatives, friends and co-workers who learned of their involvement by word of mouth or their own social media posts.

A grandmother heard that a friend’s son was a Capitol rioter. Soon, the FBI heard as well.
Lesperance, the owner of an air-conditioner company in Florida, was interviewed at his home by the FBI on Jan. 19. He admitted to the agents that he’d breached the Capitol on Jan. 6, walked around and taken photos inside, the FBI said.

While he didn’t tell authorities the name of his pastor during the interview, it didn’t take authorities long to get another tip identifying him. On Jan. 22, a source told the FBI that Cusick Jr., the founder and pastor of Global Outreach Ministries in Melbourne, Fla., had participated in the riots.

They’ve gone so long without getting anything in the majority - because they have nothing they actually want to do, they simply want to prevent forward progress - that they don’t understand what “majority rule” actually entails.

You have to remember that the GQP view “compromise” as a four letter word. In their minds, backed up by years of BSAB reporting from the “liberal media,” the only compromise that happens in Congress is they get 98% of what they want and the Dems get the privilege of voting for their bills. So (of course) the reverse situation is a massive insult to them and grounds for sinking the bill.

Remember, when localities pay out settlements or judgments on police brutality, excessive force, or wrongful death actions involving law enforcement, it’s not the locality paying.

It’s the residents who pay their taxes. They’re paying for the privilege of having excessive force judgments paid out.

In NYC, we’ve been seeing NYC paying out nearly $200 million a year the past few years in excessive force settlements/verdicts. That’s a whole lot of money that could be better spent on mental health diversions.

One way to deal with policing? Maybe change it to public safety, not law enforcement. Safety needs to be paramount concern. Have cops who are unarmed patrolling (most cops never fire a shot on the job btw - and suck at use of firearms when they do need to use them), and have them interact on the micro level to build trust. For a PD like NY, you still have ESU to handle violent crimes and situations needing weapons - that’s what they train for - when cops need help, in rolls the ESU. Have more mental health experts working with public safety officers to get care to those who need it. Work with neighboring states to stop inflow of guns. Work with community leaders to get more programs to help kids not just stay out of trouble, but give them opportunities to go into business, education, etc.

Congress needs to restore preclearance provisions (and Manchin’s suggestion to make it apply nationally is good - even states that are D or lean D have engaged in misconduct in the past, including NY and NJ). We want to make voting easier, not throwing up roadblocks that disproportionately affected poor and persons of color and women.

The preclearance applied only to states that were part of the old Confederacy. Now, of course, diverse states run by Republicans that fought for the Union or perhaps did not even exist as states during the Civil War are just as likely as Confederate states to impose voting limitations. So the Manchin proposal is a very good idea.

Los Angeles County has a One Day/One Trial system. When you’re called you serve only the day you’re called unless you’ve been empaneled on a case. When the case is done you’ve completed service. I’ve had a couple situations where I’ve been empaneled and come back the next day, the case has been settled and I’m dismissed.

Had one criminal case where I was empaneled and we were starting the case and one of the fools told the judge she can’t serve and she cussed out the judge. She was placed in contempt, a mistrial was declared and the judge apologized to us for her behavior.

FYI, preclearance didn’t just apply to the confederate states. It also applied to counties where discriminatory conduct was identified, including NYC and parts of South Dakota. Alaska was subject to preclearance as well.

Per wiki:

The 1965 coverage formula included the whole of Alabama, Alaska, Georgia, Louisiana, Mississippi, South Carolina, and Virginia; and some subdivisions (mostly counties) in Arizona, Hawaii, Idaho, and North Carolina.[51] The 1968 coverage resulted in the partial coverage of Alaska, Arizona, California, Connecticut, Idaho, Maine, Massachusetts, New Hampshire, New York, and Wyoming. Connecticut, Idaho, Maine, Massachusetts, and Wyoming filed successful “bailout” lawsuits, as also provided by section 4.[51] The 1972 coverage covered the whole of Alaska, Arizona, and Texas, and parts of California, Florida, Michigan, New York, North Carolina, and South Dakota.[51]

The special provisions of the Act were initially due to expire in 1970, and Congress renewed them for another five years. In 1975, the Act’s special provisions were extended for another seven years. In 1982, the coverage formula was extended again, this time for 25 years, but no changes were made to the coverage formula, and in 2006, the coverage formula was again extended for 25 years.[51]

“Imagine this scenario: Former President Donald Trump boards his private plane and leaves the US to resume his international business dealings in Russia,” wrote DeChalus. “The day after Trump lands in Moscow on a bright September afternoon, Manhattan District Attorney Cyrus Vance Jr. announces a grand jury has formally indicted the former president on several criminal counts. Vance wants Trump to immediately return. But the US and Russia have no extradition treaty or formal process through which a wanted person is arrested. Since Trump would be on Russian soil in this scenario, he would be under no legal obligation to cooperate with the US government. Trump then could petition Russian President Vladimir Putin for political asylum.”

FYI, preclearance didn’t just apply to the confederate states. It also applied to counties where discriminatory conduct was identified, including NYC and parts of South Dakota. Alaska was subject to preclearance as well.

Per wiki:

My embarrassment — I have always assumed that it applied only to the Confederate states. Thank you for the information correcting my misunderstanding.

No worried. People are quick to assume the VRA only applied to the South, when it recognized that discriminatory behaviors occurred nationwide.

We’d probably be better off it it was applied nationally from the outset. Going national and setting new minimum standards should be the goal.

The biggest problem with this scenario is that Trump still acts like he’s virtually untouchable. That no matter how badly cooked his ass may be, he will wriggle out of it if he just greases the right palms or hits up the right people. He is a man who thinks everybody has a price and getting out from under such charges would just be a matter of finding Vance’s price.

This explains why this is the only LP group that we see a stream of insane Tweets from, but it’ll probably happen in other LP groups now.

So the LP is like the Democratic Party in the 1960’s — an unholy alliance between racists and progressives. But given the libertarian hostility to the government regulation of private businesses, including government banning companies use of racism in selecting its customers and employees, the LP is doomed to degenerate into just another part of the white supremacist community.

What irritates me beyond words is the recent GOP SCOTUS decision that the Florida poll tax on former prisoners is not a poll tax. In 1876, in order to retain power, the GOP abandoned its support for the African-American community and it wasn’t until the Warren Court that Republicans showed any interest at all in their original mission. But that was only a temporary support that eroded quickly over time and was never very widespread.

re: #309 teleskiguy

We’ve still got a ton of parks to cross off our bucket list, but we’re not heading out West or South due to covid19. That’s not stopping others though.

For Arches, you don’t have many choices if you’re trying to reach Delicate Arch. You have some choices for Zion - by going to the Kolob Unit, but that means you don’t get to the Narrows (and I didn’t do that when I was there either). You could travel to Capitol Reef to get more solitude, or visit parks further afield, but that requires more planning and time for most people.

It also reminds people that underinvesting in the parks shows gaps in the experience and that we can and should do more to invest in the parks and critical infrastructure to make these experiences better.

Some of the parks like Zion are banning cars altogether from key areas, or requiring permits/timed passes to go to certain areas. Acadia is requiring timed passes to go to Cadillac Mtn for sunrise/sunset.

We are huge fans of the Utah parks, and Capitol Reef in particular - there’s something about the solitude there you don’t get in the others. Bryce is awesome b/c we were able to a stargazing program with rangers with a bunch of telescopes set up, and got to see a ton of stuff you can’t see in urban areas with naked eye - and they pointed out various satellites overhead too.

We also would consider relocating to Utah b/c of proximity to the parks (and it’s just a couple of hours to Yellowstone/Grand Teton for good measure.

Like I said above, it seems in their minds that this “deal” was predicated on the idea that this would be the sum total of what Biden could ask for with regards to infrastructure, either this year or this term. That by agreeing to a bill that focused on “hard” infrastructure, he was forfeiting the rest of the spending that the GQP would not support and would not seek to pass it by other means.

And so now they’re accusing him of having gone back on his word, which is horseshit because he never said at any time that this bill was the be-all, end-all from him on infrastructure.

An American officer met an NVA officer after the war.

“You know,” said the American, “You never beat us on the battlefield.”

“That is true.” replied the NVA officer. “It is also irrelevant.”

All the NVA had to do was outlast the US ability/will to fight, and that ended things. US backing corrupt/failed regimes in the South didn’t help. It didn’t matter that the US could quantitatively beat the NVA and/or Vietcong on the battlefield. It didn’t matter how many US could show as KIA or how many supply convoys were disrupted or how many tunnels in Cu Chi were eliminated.

Same with Afghanistan. Same with Iraq. Doesn’t matter how you got into those conflicts, because identifying what qualified as a success for exiting was not considered.

It’s easy to start bombing X, but knowing what your objective to consider a success is harder.

If you’re trying to bomb a nuke development site, bombing X so that they can’t build there and taking out the scientists involved is a success. If you’re trying to overthrow a corrupt regime, what does success look like? A stable regime at the end? Or do you not even care? Toppling a regime means others move to fill vacuum, including enemies and rivals. Installing a new government sounds great, but if they don’t have support and consensus of people, that wont last long either.

Bombing to show that you can do so is just dick waving. Dropping big bombs just means you make bigger craters. Doesn’t change the underlying calculus (and yes, there’s math involved here).

Ultimately we are winning in Vietnam. It’s become an economic powerhouse and gradually joining the modern world; my brother who who thinks of China as an enemy is a big fan of them. Too many lost their lives in a futile war but both Vietnam and the US may become victors.

re: #347 jaunte

I’d like the people criticizing the military for “not winning more wars” (because they’re mad at General Milley this week) to describe exactly what “winning” in Afghanistan would look like.

Our military wins almost every battle.

It’s those assholes back in Washington who decide which wars they’re allowed and/or required to fight. The military doesn’t pick their own wars.
