Charles, I was underwhelmed by this video when Dr Lizardo posted it the other day. I’m not a big fan of Beck in the first place though I’ll also admit it wasn’t as bad as I expected - perhaps Sir Paul’s influence vs Beck’s - though that’s still not saying much. Hopefully it’ll just fizzle and others won’t be tempted to do similar things.

It started with a mock ‘slave trade’ and a school resolution against racism. Now a war over critical race theory is tearing this small town apart. (Washington Post, yesterday)

TRAVERSE CITY, Mich. — Nevaeh Wharton was busy with homework one evening in late April when her phone pinged with a warning. A friend had texted to say something disgusting was happening in a private Snapchat group chat.

When the 16-year-old woke the next morning, another message was waiting for her: She had been discussed in the group. Pretty soon the whole story trickled out. A group of mostly White students attending two of Traverse City’s high schools, including Nevaeh’s, had held a mock slave auction on the social media app, “trading” their Black peers for money.

“I know how much I was sold for: one hundred dollars,” said Nevaeh, who is half-Black. “And in the end I was given away for free” — to the friend who first warned her about the group.

The Snapchat group, titled “slave trade,” also saw a student share the messages “all blacks should die” and “let’s start another holocaust,” according to screenshots obtained by The Washington Post. It spurred the fast-tracking of a school equity resolution that condemned racism and vowed Traverse City Area Public Schools would better educate its overwhelmingly White student body and teaching staff on how to live in a diverse country.

The BCG vaccine is not given in the United States. That is the vaccination against tuberculosis.

The reason it is not given is because the incidence of tuberculosis is very low in the USA, and the vaccine interferes with the tuberculin skin test.

BCG shots are not given in schools. It is only in very rare instances a BCG shot is ever recommended to an American.

The protection rate against tuberculosis in children by BCG is roughly 20%, and the vaccine lasts about 20 years (another reason it is not recommended).

Today I found out what happens when you ride up a really steep hill trail (30+% grade) on only pedal assist 2… as you fumble to make 3 button clicks to get up to pedal assist 5 you have to take your thumb off the thumb throttle. At that point your pedal assist doesn’t have any throttle assist and you stall and fall over. I guess my judo lessons when I was 8 years old paid off for learning how to roll into the fall. I did another 20% grade hill in level 2. I think I found where the twist throttle may be superior, it’s on the other hand from the pedal assist buttons.

In a rare rebuke, a judge has overturned a conviction of a self-proclaimed witch doctor after finding that a prosecutor failed to disclose that a key witness was seeking immigration protections.

Man’s child sex assault conviction is overturned over Douglas County prosecutor’s ‘negligence’ (Omaha World-Herald, today)

District Judge Thomas Otepka awarded a new trial to Mario Santos on one charge of sexual assault of a child after finding that jurors should have been allowed to weigh a witness’s desire to remain in the U.S. and whether it influenced her testimony. The judge upheld a second conviction of Santos that didn’t involve the witness in question.

Santos still faces 15 years to life in prison on the upheld conviction. But his attorneys said they will seek to have all his convictions thrown out on the argument that the entire trial was poisoned by the prosecutor’s failure to disclose.

Prosecutor Beth Beninato had charged Santos, who billed himself as a witch doctor, in 2019 with two counts of sexually assaulting children. The witness in the case said her son, then 10, now 12, had been “having behavior changes” and had eventually disclosed that he had been sexually assaulted by a man in their home near 20th and Vinton Streets.

Taken to Project Harmony, the 10-year-old was asked if he knew someone named Mario. “He’s mean! He put a spirit in my mom. It was a bad spirit and it was creepy — all the bad spirits were on the table and there were bad candles,” the boy said.

The 10-year-old told police that Santos repeatedly hit him with a horse whip and made him perform a sex act on Santos. The 10-year-old later described how he saw Santos sexually assaulting the boy’s 9-year-old cousin.

Every time I think about the concert I think “Super Spreader”. I know all my sisters and inlaws are vaccinated but there will be lots of grandkids there too. Good grief! Texas has a population of over 29 million; Nebraska has close to 2 million. The State of Texas’ current budget is $248 billion dollars; Nebraska’s state budget is $9.7 billion. The State of Texas has a budget surplus of 725 million dollars. It is beyond belief that Gov/ Ricketts is going to use Nebraska’s taxpayers’ hard-earned dollars to pay for extra law enforcement on the Texas border. Texas can darn well afford their own extra law enforcement. If our governor is trying to win points with Republicans, he can darn well spend his own money. Let Texas take care of itself.

My vaccinated youngest sister is coming to town for a big Green Day show and then the whole family is supposed to get together for food the day after. Every time I think about the concert I think “Super Spreader”. I know all my sisters and inlaws are vaccinated but there will be lots of grandkids there too. I feel like masking but I may be the only one. The dinner is setting off bad signals for me.

For the first time in over a decade, I went to Ravinia tonight, for music and dinner, to celebrate a nephew’s birthday; there were 7 of us in total, all adults, all vaccinated. We had lawn tickets so we were outdoors the entire time and socially distanced from others attending the concert. This was my late husband’s family and none are part of my pod. We were all unmasked though I did put a mask on when using the ladies room. With the delta variant running roughshod over the country, maybe we could have been more cautious, but given that we were not crammed together with a large number of strangers, we were still observing what will likely be any new CDC guidelines . It’s not like we were at Lollapalooza, which is coming in a few days.

I’ve seen comparisons to Napoleon, who likewise was a brilliant tactician who nevertheless kept pursuing aggressive strategies that totally failed to take into mind the overall strategic situation. I might also offer Rommel, whose successes in Africa were often tactical ones at the expense of the overall strategic picture, the myth built up around him largely foreign press taking up Nazi propaganda and running with it as a way to explain their own losses against him. Or Yamamoto, who had an eye for the strategic picture but whose hubris would not allow him to consider all possible scenarios until four fleet carriers sat on the bottom of the Pacific Ocean.

Lost Cause of the Confederacy (goes to Wikipedia, the entire article would be banned by conservatives whinging about Critical Race Theory).

The article contains the plethora of politicians, civic society groups, former Confederate soldiers and officer, authors, Christian pastors, and film makers (right up to recently released films in the XXI Century) who perpetuated the Lost Cause myth with the idea of indoctrinating the North (and all Southerner) that the Civil War was something (anything) other than about slavery.

It is an extensively researched article, naming key people from the very end of the war to the present day who consistently worked to perpetuate the myth of loss not by poor military leaders, but overwhelming Yankee brutality and numbers; the glorification of the Klan right from the start; including taking away the independence of women’s actions in the South (women had to run the plantations and other businesses whilst the men were off to war) instead painting them as dainty flowers who were protected by the Southern gentleman’s chivalry.

Under the laws of war, if the enemy systematically does that, you have the right to pull out some of the stops in the Geneva and Hague conventions (not all, and there are some you can’t pull). And even in isolated cases, there are some stops you may pull out. But you may never commit commit genocide under any circumstance.

Basically, what happens is that the enemy becomes an unlawful combattant, basically a criminal on the battlefield. If it is an isolated incident, those reasonably assumed to be involved. If it is special units, those special units. If it is endemic to the enemy forces, the entire enemy force.

You still have to decide what stops (within the boundaries of the HC and GC, and none of the articles you you’re NOT ALLOWED to pull) to pull out on a battle by battle, case by case basis (i.e. not systematically). But won’t be pleasant experience. For example, if you capture an enemy, you don’t have to give them PoW rights, merely the rights of the common criminal (again, within the boundaries of the GC and HC).

There’s a reason why, if you see the enemy use perfidy, unclear insignia and uniform on the battle scene, use mercenaries, use seemingly independent “contractors” etc., you can reasonably assume that they may be trying to create plausible deniability, i.e. some sort of “gap” between themselves and the perpetrators of war crimes, crimes against humanity, and genocide .

Enter “Wi murricans dunn rekkkognise da authoritae of no stinking international lol or kourt!! 111thy!!!”. Well, war crimes, crimes against humanity and genocide fall under universal jurisdiction, which means any country can arrest, detain, investigate, prosecute, and try the enemy (either themselves or ship the sorry enemy ass to the ICC). And most countries in the world are signatories to the relevant conventions.

So, TL;DR, that sort of mindset will only lead the rightios into a world of hurt. And should international peacekeepers need to become involved, there are countries in the world who train their conscripts hard in the laws of war, and how to act should they witness crimes against the laws of war. And such crimes may draw a swift and harsh response should the enemy happen to commit such deeds under such peackeepers noses…

But enough ranting about international law, but doesn’t it seem to you that them rightios seem intent on (figuratively) bashing their own skulls in with a 2’ x 4’, while driving at 100 mph into a solid rock wall? Like intentionally provoking things that will have very painful consequences for them? With vaxxing, with this thing about openly calling for crimes against international law, etc.?

Note also what the Tunisian people did.

After a (mostly) peaceful nationwide protest ousted their conservative dictatorial government, they held elections and put in a religious (Islamist) government.

Religions are conservative by their nature. Putting in a religious government virtually guarantees abuse of the people. Donald Trump has been urging former football player Herschel Walker to challenge Sen. Raphael Warnock (D-GA) next year.

Walker hasn’t decided yet, but the mere possibility that he might run has caused AP reporters to start digging into his past a bit. Some of what they have found is now starting to come out and it could affect how well he does if he enters the race.

Knowledge that the media already has exposed some unpleasant details of his past life, and that they would become part of the campaign, could very well influence his decision about whether or not to throw his helmet into the ring.

Watching a Woodstock 1999 documentary on HBO.

I was 18 at the time of that show. Me and couple of buddies had talked about maybe going but ultimately decided not to.

No doubt one of the few good decisions I made at that age.

I went to Woodstock 94. It was a logistics nightmare, but the music was absolutely superb. I wouldn’t change a thing in going to 94. Got to see so many musical acts in so many genres it was amazing (I saw everyone from Cypress Hill, Melissa Etheridge, CSN, NIN, Aerosmith, and Metallica. But there was no way I was going to Woodstock 99. I knew it would be a shitshow - done in a former airport with no cover, limited logistics, and a music lineup that would not bode well.

A United Airlines flight was evacuated ahead of take-off at San Francisco International Airport on Thursday after a teenager sent a picture of an Airsoft gun to other passengers onboard via Airdrop, an iPhone feature that allows sharing between other Apple Inc. products.

KNTV reported as the flight bound for Orlando was getting ready to leave the gate, several passengers received the photo of the realistic-looking toy gun, sparking alarm.

Everyone on the aircraft was forced to de-board and go through security screening a second time. The teen was not allowed back on the flight.

The Japanese had one chance to win the war in the Pacific: Make the Americans come to terms before Seattle, Portsmouth, Norfolk, and Pearl made it impossible for them to win. Their problem was that they, like the Americans, did not understand the incredible power of the carrier fleet, and they wanted to get the Americans to commit their battleships to the fight before they pressed their technological and experiential advantages. In the event, the Americans’ mighty 14- and 16-inch guns were almost exclusively used in ground-support missions, and the Japanese never got the opportunity they wanted before Midway basically put the war out of their reach.

The war was out of reach of Japan the moment the first bomb dropped on Pearl Harbor.

Wiser heads (including Yamamoto’s) knew and some stated that any sort of attritional war with the United States would inevitably end in Japan’s defeat.

However, Japan had painted itself into a corner in that they were not willing to give up their “gains” in China and at point encroachments into Indo-China. And a weakness built into their constitution made it impossible to control their military.* Add to it a jingoistic attitude about western degeneracy and lack of spirit compared to that of the Japanese people that would make up for Japan’s shortcomings in a conflict. Japan had the choice of escalating to war, or backing down and seriously negotiating** with the USA regarding China and other issues - which would have been a loss of face and acceptance of being a regional power at best.

Just finished reading Richard Frank’s _Tower of Skulls_ which covers the region from 1937-1941 with quite a focus on the China-Japan war.

* - The army or navy could cause a government to fall by having the Army or Navy Minister resign, and then refuse to suggest/appoint a replacement. So they essentially had a veto power on government decisions. (And the Japanese decision making process appears to have been a slow grinding thing that seeks to make a decision while having no one responsible for having made it.)

** - Japanese diplomacy in the 1940-41 period was essentially asking the USA to force China to the table with Japan while promising to give Japan what it wanted in a treaty or abandoning China entirely if China didn’t agree to it. China at that time was essentially trying to hold out and bleed Japan by playing defense and hoping for further western aid and eventual involvement.

If you said op-ed, you’re right. Bush really isn’t the right guy for the job, even though he’s a flaming liberal compared to the MAGA GOP these days. But let’s not forget that 20 years ago, the biggest news story in August was the handling of embryonic stem cell research. Bush wanted to limit the number of research lines.

Then 9/11 happened, and that medical research discussion got overwhelmed by the GWOT.

That said, if you coupled Bush and Clinton on overseeing a pandemic response outreach, I’d feel a wee bit better. The problem remains that the people who refuse to vaccinate are never going to listen to anyone outside of the antivaxxer bubble created by the right wing echo chamber. They’re impervious to facts or logic, even on their death beds.

There are two main* physical forms of the human body, which were at one time labeled “gender” and assigned values of “male” and “female”. Nowadays, the word “gender” has been adapted to include a person’s spiritual, mental, and psychological recognition of oneself, and is much more like a spectrum than a binary either-or. I don’t think we have a new term to define the physical characteristic yet.

The New Yorker did a long read about Beth Allison Barr and her book “The Making of Biblical Womanhood.” It’s the usual “scrappy woman surfaces discrimination against women by men, this time with religion” article.

That said, this tweet says what the article ignored. (And boy did it! It opens at an outfit called “The Silos” which is run by Chip and Joanna Gaines of Magnolia, bleargh.)

Within white Evangelicalism, Barr’s book has proven hugely divisive. Michael F. Bird, a theologian, wrote/videoed a defense of Barr to Kevin DeYoung, who is one of the promoters of complementarianism. Yeah, it was a nice defense, but when he started going on about how we really couldn’t talk about God in female terms, that’s when I’d had quite enough and left him five tweets.

One of the things DeYoung did is try to discredit Barr by saying she couldn’t be paid attention to because she might be lying about abuse when she was younger. Bird rightly chewed DeYoung out about that, and this guy responded. I let him know how I felt.

I hate these discussions because they remind me of how Christianity has minimized and continues to minimize the voices of women. Tired of this!

Science fiction illustrator Jay Jackson produced political cartoons for the Defender in the 40s and 50s. There was more than a little overt racism in SF when Jackson started in the field in 1938 (still is, for that matter) but there were also some editors and writers who every bit as forward about society as they were technology.

Jackson is believed to be the first black artist used regularly in science fiction magazines. While not genre-savvy, he became more familiar with the field, and was recognized as an especially suitable artist for the kind of humorous science fiction content that [Raymond] Palmer liked to run. He was profiled in Amazing’s “Introducing the Author” feature, a rarity for an artist, with a photo which guaranteed that the magazine’s readers understood that Jackson was black, a college man with a suburban family and considerable experience in his profession.

Another example of yokel resistance to science, different issue though.
In the former dust bowl (Lubbock, etc. where I lived and worked for many years) God gets most of the credit for ending the Dust Bowl through increased rainfall. If so, the Dust Bowl would have returned during much worse droughts in the 50s and later. It didn’t. The real solution was contour plowing, where farmers plow their fields so the furrows follow the contour of the land rather than in geometrically straight lines. This was developed by USDA scientists through research at places like Texas A&M and the University of Nebraska but it was monumentally difficult to get dryland farmers to accept it. They knew better than a bunch of pointy-headed college types, even though the latter were mostly farm raised themselves.
It has been my own observation that this probably had a lot to do with the demographic changes of the 40s and later. The dumb yokel farmers who relied on instinct and superstition went bust, sold their lands to smarter neighbors and moved to the cities and burbs during World War II. Yokels and hicks still exist in abundance but they aren’t farmers these days.

Another example of yokel resistance to science, different issue though.
In the former dust bowl (Lubbock, etc. where I lived and worked for many years) God gets most of the credit for ending the Dust Bowl through increased rainfall. If so, the Dust Bowl would have returned during much worse droughts in the 50s and later. It didn’t. The real solution was contour farming, where farmers plow their field so the furrows follow the contour of the land rather than in geometrically straight line. This was developed by USDA scientists through research at places like Texas A&M and the University of Nebraska but it was monumentally difficult to get dryland farmers to accept it. They knew better than a bunch of pointy-headed college types, even though the latter were mostly farm raised themselves.
It has been my own observation that this probably had a lot to do with the demographic changes of the 40s and later. The dumb yokel farmers who relied on instinct and superstition went bust, sold their lands to smarter neighbors and moved to the cities and burbs during World War II. Yokels and hicks still exist in abundance but they aren’t farmers these days.

Also, the delta variant does shed three orders of magnitude more virus, so you are going to see somewhat larger breakthrough.
But it’s not because the virus is becoming resistant to the vaccine, but because the immune system gets overwhelmed by the sheer number of viruses.

Let’s do the math.

2,000/2,000,000

1 in a thousand. That means 0.1% of those who get vaccinated may see an infection. That’s 99.9% effectiveness, which is far higher than most other vaccines that are required (like MMR, DTaP, etc.). It’s also far higher than the influenza vaccines.

That’s impressive protection. Breakthrough infections will happen. But if you get covid19 and you’re unvaccinated, your chances of hospitalization and death soar.

That’s assuming that every one of the 2 million were exposed. The vaccine is good, but not 99.9% good.

Considering that no one is perfect, all vessels the Lord chooses are, of necessity, flawed. With that said, yes, even Donald J. Her point is to get the talking points out there: The only way a business should be allowed to discriminate against the unvaccinated is if they enforce protections against every conceivable form of disease known to man.
