My guess is that the 3 McCarthy nominees that Pelosi approved would be unwilling to accept such a request if she offered one because it would damage their prospects in future elections.

Plus they are having to pay a company to come in and do deep cleaning/sanitizing and to educate the employees on how to keep that going. That isn’t cheap either.

We are such a country of spoiled brats. A large number of us lack the ability to see anything except Right Now, never mind tomorrow or a year from now. And then it is shocking, just shocking when the shit hits the fan. My patience is done with this crap.

Not even that for me. That goes double for TexASS as well.

Also my agency is begging people to transfer to vacant positions they can’t fill in TexASS, Florida, Missouri & Mississippi. Nobody wants to go there to work and deal with the wackos in those places!

Those who are trying to damage Biden can see the future — they are fearful our becoming a “majority-minority” nation and they are working to prevent that future from arriving, by silencing those who do not share their views. The Trump cult, along with most Republican legislators, are working to make us a white supremacist society, like South Africa was for generations.

There is another reason Republicans are pushing voter restrictions. They want to trigger riots and violence from people they strip from the voter rolls so they can keep their racist base energized

The smartest way to make the rich pay is not a wealth tax
It’s important to ask the wealthy to pay more. It’s also important to do it the right way.

All of that and a cap on personal wealth, every dime. No more parking money offshore or hiding it any other way. Or maybe a rule that a corporation has to reinvest a large percentage of profits of all types in employee compensation including wages, healthcare, paid leave, sick time, education grants, etc. If they go above and beyond the requirements THEN they can write some of it off at tax time.

Estate taxes are a kind of wealth tax, are they not?

Basically they’re a special-case workaround on income taxes — the dead don’t pay taxes, the living do. Someone who has a million bucks of income the year when they inherit money or property or a business worth that amount doesn’t have to pay income taxes on the inheritance. More than ten million dollars inheritance or whatever the limit is, some level of taxation is applied because it’s income to someone.

The exclusion is 11 million from the estate, which might be split among several heirs.

(also, spouses don’t pay inheritance tax.)

This lurid story of Dunning-Kruger conspiracy criminals came along during one of the trashiest periods of American media history, just before the internet hijacked much, but not all, of the audience for trashy speculation.
At the time, the sensationalizing elements of the media spun the story to highlight implied class differences between the rivals, contrasting the low-life Harding with the genteel and proper Kerrigan. In fact, the two women came from very similar working class backgrounds, though Kerrigan had a much more stable and positive upbringing.
Kerrigan’s father, Daniel, was a welder. Her mother, Brenda, was a homemaker. They remained married until Daniel’s death in 2010.

Kerrigan’s family was of modest means. Her father sometimes worked three jobs to fund her skating career; he also drove the Zamboni at the local rink in exchange for Nancy’s lessons.

That’s a fair concern, though I’m not aware of any major publicly traded companies where someone owns an outright majority of shares. In such an edge case where paying 2% of one’s net worth would cause one to lose control of a company, a few options are readily apparent:
1) pay a dividend to pay for the wealth tax
2) take out a loan against a portion of the shares
3) issue a different class of shares with different voting rights.

I’m sure that there are other solutions.

But there are privately held companies or LLC’s that have shared ownership. How are these organizations valued? It may be difficult for someone in such company to come up with the cash needed to pay this tax.

Most LLCs wouldn’t be hit by the proposed wealth tax (at least the one that Warren wanted). Regarding assets in general, I would look at insured values as a starting point. It’s not a trivial problem, but it’s not insurmountable either.

None of this is about the people who own the Bakery that is netting $300 per year after expenses and salaries are paid out. This isn’t even about the $400K per year middle income family.

correct

it’s about the wealthy who arent even paying their fair share of the current income tax.

Squeak, I just dropped the salmon at your feet.

but they dont know goodies - fish, meat, whatever, from the same sound slicing vegetables.
then i have to show them a piece and let them smell it so they’ll go away.

A lot of people are claiming that Biden is operating at brain-stem level.

medical twit

Rep. Ronny Jackson (R-TX), who was the former White House physician, told Fox News he believed President Biden would resign due to his cognitive abilities.

Said Jackson: “There’s something seriously going on with this man right now. And you know I think that he’s either going to — he’s either going to resign, they’re going to convince him to resign from office at some point in the near future for medical issues or they’re going to have to use the 25th Amendment to get rid of this man right now.”

Slate with a hilarious send-up of the endless parade of op-eds in the Washington Post on why we shouldn’t make Trump voters feel uncomfortable.

Stop Insulting Trump Voters and Their Concerns. Instead, Shut Up and Take It. (today)

On Thursday, the Washington Post published an opinion piece by columnist Gary Abernathy arguing that Americans need to stop insulting Trump voters lest we fail to achieve “what’s necessary for our nation to survive.” Easily the greatest work on the importance of being nice to Trump supporters that the Post has published since Kathleen Parker’s “Progressives’ Shaming of Trump Supporters Won’t Work” (Aug. 9, 2019) or James Hohmann’s “Liberal Hostility Toward Trump Aides Could Galvanize the GOP Base” (June 25, 2018) or Michael Gerson’s “Stop Sneering at Trump. It Won’t Help” (April 20, 2017), Abernathy’s essay is a timely reminder of the importance of historical amnesia, and the urgent need to treat Trump voters with civility and respect and deference and reverence and adoration, no matter what they’ve done.

After all, the 2020 election is over, and so is the violent attack on the capitol Trump incited in a futile attempt to cling to power, and even if people are still dropping like flies from the deadly pandemic Trump catastrophically mismanaged, there’s no reason to be rude. You wouldn’t treat someone like a moral leper just because they root for the Orioles instead of the Nationals, so why would you judge someone for handing the country over to a pack of racist crooks who promptly got more than half a million Americans killed? Trump voters would prefer not to think about whether or not they bear any responsibility for the awful things done in their name by the people they explicitly told to go do awful things in their name, and it’s important for those of us on the left side of the aisle to respect their culture.

One of their arguments was that if you get taxes from an increase in net worth, do you refund if net worth falls?

Nope.

Pennsylvania taxes on your capital gains. If you make money they tax it. If you lose money they don’t care and don’t give you any back. Compare this to the Federal tax system where you can bank some losses and use it to offset later profits.
