WATCH LIVE: House Investigation of Jan. 6 Attack Begins With Police Testimony

Warning: Video and audio played during this hearing may contain violence and explicit language.

The House select committee appointed to investigate the violent insurrection that occurred Jan. 6 at the U.S. Capitol begins its hearings on Tuesday, July 27.

Members of the Metropolitan Police Department and U.S. Capitol Police are expected to testify about the violence and fear they experienced that day, and how the attack has continued to affect them long after.

The storming of the Capitol, which killed at least five people, took place as Congress was in the process of certifying the Electoral College results of the 2020 election for President Joe Biden. Earlier that day, at a rally on the National Mall, then-President Donald Trump repeated false claims of voter fraud and a stolen election as he urged crowds protesting the results of the election to walk down to the Capitol to take a stand against “this egregious assault on our democracy,” also calling on then-Vice President Mike Pence to reject the election results. Speaker of the House Nancy Pelosi has promised the committee, led by Mississippi Democrat Rep. Bennie Thompson, will “get to the truth” of what happened that day. Republicans, who have been wary of crossing Trump, have criticized the process. House Minority Leader Kevin McCarthy recently withdrew the names of five GOP appointees after Pelosi rejected the participation of two of them.

May the truth win out. It was an insurrection.

Just a reminder that Ali Alexander still evades arrest.

Is that because Andy Biggs is helping him?

from downstairs, this could be problematic

i mentioned it yesterday

a committee member must be a house member AND has to be a member of the Democratic caucus or the Republican conference.

if the house R’s get savvy and boot Cheney/Kinzinger out of the conference, then they would lose their 1/6 committee seats

sure, they could then join the Dem caucus. They dont have to register dem to do this - but the optics would be miserable going forward..

“We’re caucusing with the Democrats for the length of this commission. We feel we have a duty higher than standing on the same side of the aisle as those that supported the insurrection and refuse to prevent it from happening again.”

Any damage that is going to be done to them has been done by accepting being on this committee. Getting thrown out by the rest of their party isn’t going to change that.

HEADS UP Lizardim!
There appears to be a concerted effort in several countries, making claims that CoViD tests are not being performed, with allegations that it exaggerates the number of CoViD cases among unvaccinated.

you’re right on both counts, for sane people.
though it would make their reelection attempts even harder than they already are now. (i only care that someone worse takes a seat)

it also then becomes an all democratic committee and that will be flogged to death.
it’s harder now with literal republicans - though then we start hair splitting between registered and in the conference republicans. everyone would be shouting RINO all over the place..

D.C. Metropolitan Police Officer Michael Fanone said he was repeatedly tased as rioters chanted “kill him with his own gun,” and that doctors told him he suffered a heart attack during the riot, diagnosing him with a concussion, a traumatic brain injury and PTSD.

Slamming the table in a moment of rage, Fanone said “the indifference shown to my colleagues is disgraceful,” declaring that the lawmakers who “continue to deny the events of that day” have “betrayed their oath of office.”

D.C. police officer Daniel Hodges, who was seen on video having his gas mask yanked off while wedged in a door, recalled how rioters, who he called “terrorists,” repeatedly tried to recruit him, with another saying, “you will die on your knees.”

Hodges rebutted GOP claims the rioters did not carry guns, telling the committee “multiple gun arrests” were made between Jan. 5 and 7, but adding “we will never know how many were carrying firearms” because of the limited arrests made at the Capitol.

Capitol Police officer Harry Dunn, who is Black, said he faced a “torrent of racial epithets,” including roughly 20 rioters calling him a “f****** n*****,” an experience he said other Black officers shared as well.

But … but … Trump said they were totes peaceful & giving out “kisses and hugs”

The intersection between the testimony of officers today with the history of America reminds everyone that history is important, and the efforts to distort the violent and racist historical facts about America come from those who are part of the efforts to dismantle democracy.

More like resetting American Democracy back to a time when power was distributed less equally. Namely, among whites.

They insist on parallels with the BLM protests of the previous summer.

Granted, there was violence and as I recall, there were officers summoned to deal with it who made arrests ON THE SPOT.

On the other hand, many of these people were protesting peacefully and in public where they were fully within their rights to do so.

But the people who stormed the Capitol were in violation of the law for simply being there, whether they were violent or destructive or not and NOT A SINGLE ONE was arrested or charged that day.

A better approach would be to basically ignore them: or feature mocking coverage of their paltry crowd…

The Ghost of a Flea  Jul 27, 2021 • 10:40:32am

The “thin blue line” flag and its related movement are about shared complicity in abuse of power…but after 1/6 the flow of that complicity has been reversed.

This was always going to happen because this was never good-faith support of the police. Police unions and individual cops emphasizing the rhetoric were attempting to create a moral panic that obscured racist policing policies and their lethal consequences…but “Back the Blue” conservatives didn’t sign on to support the general idea of policing, they signed on specifically for the corrupt transaction of allowing abuse of power against minorities in return for license to abuse their own power with impunity.

As always, the only stable reactionary axiom is “there is a hierarchy, I am towards the top for some reason, and those below must both be compliant and non-resistant to my whims, especially if it’s cruel and arbitrary.” People do not exist to be people, they exist to perform functions for the high castes and it is wrong and wrong—incorrect and immoral—for anyone to question this arrangement. Cops are supposed to do the labor of maintaining hierarchy—punching down literally and figuratively—and “the law” only exists to be applied to the lower castes. But LEOs are the highest type of low-caste individuals, so their impunity is extremely fragile.

This is most graphically present on 1/6…but it’s also there every time a Karen calls the police because they’re disquieted or a state senator tries to get away with speeding or a DUI. In this framework a cop that tries to apply justice equally is a bad cop; a cop that does not accept their position as boundary-guard between the castes is a bad cop. The outrage and indignation reactionaries display in these circumstances is entirely authentic, because they cannot conceive that the system of the world includes the possibilities such as that they will be called to account, or that their impression of “wrongdoing” have no legal weight. The response to the testimony today will be to simply deny the cop-ness of the cops…and then further deny them any personhood or entitlement to speak of their feelings or impressions. If they’re not performing their function—punching down—they deserve harm.

Mireček, Ostrava’s missing crocodile, has been found. He was in the owner’s basement all along. However, the owner might be in some trouble, basically for keeping a potentially hazardous animal without a special permit (which isn’t really hard to obtain).

The police said they’ll give the owner a fine for not getting the permit, and suggested he build a better enclosure for the critter.

re: #78 Punish Domestic Terrorists

See…this fascinates me but also alarms me because…it rhymes with everything else going on.

People are angry that Biles prioritized herself rather than harm herself performing the function consumers desire of her. She is supposed to be an uncomplaining unit of utility relative to the passive audience that demands service (in the form of spectacle; in the form of victory with nationalist residuals; in the form of parasocial availability, but paradoxically that availability cannot contain vulnerability or request respite.)

As they were about Naomi Osaka.

As they were about workers during covid.

As they were about football players with concussions.

As they were about soliders with PTSD.

There is a running theme in which people are expected to destroy themselves—-figuratively, then literally—uncomplainingly, to enact the role assigned to them by a cadre of people who are entitled to judge whether or not you are serving your function well enough.

To some extent, we all interact with other people in use-value terms…it’s just inevitable because we don’t know most people, we deal with most people within the framework of jobs or consumer interactions…but there is clearly a chunk of society that views all people as nothing but their function, and I would argue that they are the bloc that we currently describe as “conservative.” Their whole assumption is that there are entitled to their hegemony, to dictate the parameters of other’s selves, right down to allowing or denying thoughts and feelings.

(And some of the hegemons are sincere believers who will destroy themselves uncomplainingly to meet the standards of higher-tier hegemons, and view their self-immolation as the price of their license to control others.)

The phrase I keep using is “prove the worth of your life” but that doesn’t really encapsulate the worldview, because it doesn’t capture the narcissism and anthropophagy. Even if you perform your function, you aren’t allowed to accurately describe that experience or reflect on your feelings or complain. If you die as a consequence of performing your function, then it is wrong to observe that there is a cause and effect, that the death was arranged. You are a soldier widget, a fast food widget, a sex widget, a sink for abuse widget, and it is wrong to assert that your function is detrimental to your humanity.

We are supposed to be eaten and praise the cannibals as it happens.

Also worth noting that Simone is 24 years old. Obviously that’s young in most regards, but for gymnastics? It’s about the equivalent of an NFL QB being in his mid to late thirties.

For comparison, Mckayla Maroney retired when she was 21.

re: #190 Backwoods_Sleuth

I remember when some people said that Rickey Henderson didn’t deserve to go in the baseball HOF because they thought he sometimes “dogged it.” This is a guy who, at one point in his career, had scored more runs, drawn more walks, and stolen more bases than any other player in MLB history, and loved the game so much he went and played in independent leagues when he couldn’t play in the majors anymore. (But like Biles, he was black, therefore “lazy” unlike the white players whose records he broke, Ruth and Cobb). Biles is the GOAT, and I trust her judgment more than I do these assholes who’ve won jackshit.

fwiw, interesting that a call goes out for shots fired / officer needs help / officer down etc and things get mobilized. not a lot of questions or verification or bureaucracy.

how long does it take? minutes? don’t they just sort of roll ‘em?

1/6 they needed help almost immediately.
they saw the crowd coming
then knocking down the barriers
i dont know specifically what calls were made and to who (well kevin made one )

in the end we’re talking HOURS to respond

we know why - who was in charge, who could give the order etc.

The CDC reversing course on masking for vaxxed is a wise move.
Delta sheds a lot more virus, like three orders of magnitude more, which makes indirect transmission even more likely, as well as the virus simply overwhelming the immune system (not because the virus is resistant to the vaccine).
The usual suspects will of course harp on about testing not being done and allege that’s why unvaxxinated are so grossly overrepresented among the infected by CoViD stats…
As well as outright ad homs on Fauci.

This is all true. It’s just, once again, New York Times seeming to always find a way to spin a story so that it must, necessarily, be Bad for Democrats and Good For The GOP. Never about who should actually be to blame for it, only resentment against Dems is valid and worth covering even if we have to invent it, for they must be held to blame for everything, even existing.

The Ghost of a Flea  Jul 27, 2021 • 12:39:27pm

I emphasize this a lot, but what’s happening in our politics replicates the tactics abusers use to control and terrorize, and I feel that the invocations of “cowardice” needs to be looked at in precisely that same frame.

These people are comprehensive cowards. They have no ideology because they are afraid of self-reflection and incapable of self-imposed constraint, but scared of total freedom of nihilism such that they’ve invented ontologicially and morally empty pseudo-ideologies that provide the catchphrases and rituals that seem to impart meaning. Their fantasies are of supreme authorities (God, Country, the military) granting both the license to do as they will and the aegis to do so with impunity, but also unlimited, members-only forgiveness.

[Capitalism and individualism, like catalysts, make this process faster and smoother. Fetishizing the self as unique and demanding expression is an end-run around genuine self reflection, and treats the self as a fossil rather than something that is context-dependent, malleable, and changeable. It’s also entry-level antisocial, denying the inherent connectivity of social existence. Monetization and marketing of ideas like consumer goods incentivizes destroying deep meaning in favor of what is easy, familiar, and undemanding.]

And here’s the hard part to process:

They’ve been successful to a large degree in getting away with shit because they’ve built their preferred forms of abuse into the country. Our carcereal state is just racism with extra steps and slavery with extra steps. Our foreign policy is just colonialism with an extra step, and our military engagements are precisely the shit shows they are (post Korea) because the military is not achieved limited objectives but thrown against whatever the reactionaries hate and fear enough to get their blood up.

Up until now, the people they’ve wanted to be hurt and killed have been hurt and killed, and the culture has largely allowed them to publicly enjoy that process. In the few places their appetites have been stymied, such as in the realm of both sexual harassment and violence towards the sexual/gender nonconforming, their declaration of their entitlements over the bodies and spirits of others have been barely coded, and their revanchism—what they will do, granted license—has never been concealed.

We’re not at the beginning of the relationship, where you can just boot the abuser and move on while they slink off. The is the end-phase of a long cohabitation where in spite of getting most of what they want, the abusers still feel entitled to more, and to no pushback, and to no shame…so they’re escalating the way cowards escalate, diving forward and cringing back, each particular instance of abuse a lunge to do as much damage as they can while not feeling at risk. If they’re permitted, then they have license and are allowed to escalate; if they’re resisted, they’re victims that are entitled to escalate at some later date.

Cowards kill faster and with less provocation.

It’s a mistake to understand this situation as a pressure gauge, where the awful people in this culture can be maintained below a certain point and thus be irrelevant. They will escalate the minute they feel safe, and right now the attempts at imposing consequences aren’t working…the goons are very visible but ultimately unimportant—people that will destroy themselves for a moment of power—but the people doing the real harm have money and political power that means they can just do this all again.

Missed that one.

Always wondered why they didn’t increase the number of days of the week.

Lottery sales started to really slide a few years ago, for the draw games. The scratchers are much more popular.

If they want to increase draw games sales, perhaps they ought to pay out something that more represents the actual odds?

When I get a three-number win, the payout is like $9 or $10, on a $2 ticket, when the odds are something like 693 to 1 (for 2 white balls + megaball for MegaMillions.) Vegas would pay out over $1k for a win like that.

re: #256 Belafon

ALL OF THIS is about white people no longer being in control of the country, and instead having to share power with others.

…but it’s also about money.

Whiteness is a scam. It’s meaningless by design, a concept that is hollow so that it can be filled with positives and easy-access so that its contents can be curated. It’s curated to grant and limit access to power, so the boundaries of “white” change a great deal…most importantly, in the day-the-day micro of whiteness, where people get kicked out of “white” because they fail to serve their assigned purpose.

White trash is a really important stigma to look at when considering the complete meaning of being white The most common from of expulsion from whiteness is being poor individually or collectively, but there’s also the decade by decade process by which groups are assigned marginal whiteness after their utility to people with power diminishes, or their suffering becomes embarrassing for whiteness and they must be removed from view or made scapegoats.

But it’s also notable that the most common form of acquiring whiteness is to attain enough material wealth or clout to make the assertion and not be openly contradicted. The second is to adopt the cultural modes and expressions of the dominating white culture…which itself is a backdoor expression of wealth, because it’s conspicuous consumption (of goods, or services, of culture)…and attempt assimilation. The third is to be an individual that weaponizes their nonwhite identity in the cause of whiteness.

I think this is important because this is a process not a state: there is no physical thing, no well-constructed idea, to push against. Reactionaries are and are not motivated by whiteness…but if you open up the concept of whiteness it’s core conceit is an entitlement to power with no constraints beyond hierarchy. But if we open up all the other idea-boxes of reactionaries—nationalism, gender essentialism, capitalism—we find exactly the same core conceit.

[NB: I’d argue that the consistent manner in which reactionaries create self-indulgent exceptions to their own “rules” is a better representation of what they believe than what they say, and this applies to the concept of whiteness as well. The rules are broken in a very consistent manner that demonstrates an ideology that’s not stated.]

It is a mistake to attribute consistent thought to people who are not thinking. There’s nothing to debunk or argue about, because they will believe whatever thing is a pyramid shaped diagram that grants them as much license as they can imagine.

The assholes in the streets have goon brains. But the country is being destroyed by the people with so much money and power that they never hear “No” and have decided that it’s better to destroy the society itself rather than be questioned.

I mentioned before that we’re dealing with abusers who’ve gotten a great deal of what they wanted…that applies geometrically more for the wealthy and powerful compared to the average goon brain reactionary. We live in a kleptocracy where the center of government gives money to the people with the most money while being poor is criminalized. We live in an oligarchy where the wealthy can play with personal armies and do social experiments, and hold money over the heads of aid agencies and public health officials to get things their way. We live in an empire where people suffer and die in near-slavery overseas, for the benefit of a tiny number of people, and when that money is fucked with our army and our intelligence agencies retaliate.

Many of these people play with whiteness because whiteness is an aesthetic of power. Sticking your philanthropic dick in African aid organizations while ignoring on the ground assessments of what’s needed is a form of white entitlement that’s more subtle than creating an entire Potemkin apparatus to make race science still a going thing…but they’re all playing with the same building blocks. The current reactionary eruption is putatively in service to some kind of societal transformation involving social conservatism and whiteness…but it’s being funding by people who want to maintain their status quo of having everything, including the entitlement to redefine the boundaries of what is important. Even if the mob doesn’t succeed, they’re providing enough disruption that the worst aspects of the status quo will further metastasize.

This is basically a rug pull. The neo-Confederates with a broad social agenda can lose and their financial backers can both get that moeny and perpetuate a less-than-superliminal racist system that is still getting worse. And in a few years when they want more license, more power, they can just repeat this process of making the rubes swarm.

…which is what they’ve been doing since the time of Reagan…or Eisenhower, if you count overseas adventures involving the Dulles Brothers.

all right, i want to know the following things: are the people in ICU who claim they are vaccinated actually vaccinated, or are they just lying so that they don’t have to be lectured by staff? If they’ve actually been vaccinated, were they immunocompromised to the point where the vaccine just wasn’t effective, or were they between doses of pfizer or moderna, or were they inside the first week or two after the second dose? I want to have a sense of what my actual chances are of being hospitalized if I’m healthy, not immunocompromised, got both doses of pfizer, and am well past the window for when strong immunity should have kicked in. ‘Cause I’m gonna be in a small room with students this fall, some vaccinated, some not, and I don’t want to be a tragic story in the Washington Post.

And the message is strongest from areas where the cops are still all about white supremacy and keeping those people in their place. They’re not talking about backing the black cop who works with the community in the city.

I would say that if you wear your mask, you should be pretty much ok. But not having had the flu doesn’t mean you won’t catch it, and during a normal flu year, a few thousand people die, some of whom have gotten the vaccine.

The Multi-State Lottery Association, which administers the Powerball game, concluded that more frequent drawings would attract more customers and has adopted a change in association rules, to be effective for the August 23, 2021, drawing, to conduct drawings three times each week, instead of two,” the commission said in a memo to its board members.

Good luck with that.

I for one will not be playing PowerBall three times a week. (Indeed, I currently don’t buy PowerBall tickets at all. I limit myself to only one game (MegaMillions.))

Instead of what the MSL association claims, they are trying to extract more $$$ from their current players.

Why would adding a Monday draw bring in more customers?

I think this will not reverse the downward trend in draw game sales.

re: #273 Love-Child of Cassandra and Sisyphus

Missed that one.

….

When I get a three-number win, the payout is like $9 or $10, on a $2 ticket, when the odds are something like 693 to 1 (for 2 white balls + megaball for MegaMillions.) Vegas would pay out over $1k for a win like that.

Keep in mind that there are other payoffs that have to be included — for example the MegaMillions. Plus the funding for state services. You have to add all these costs together to determine whether the payoffs are reasonable.

338
Love-Child of Cassandra and Sisyphus  Jul 27, 2021 • 2:22:55pm

What the MSL did successfully do is block the MegaMillions folk from adding any more days.

MM is on Tuesday and Friday. It is unlikely they would add Thursday (back-to-back draws are not a good idea) and Sunday will be objectionable in some states.

re: #337 Hecuba’s daughter

The jackpot also pays but a fraction of the actual odds, but the payout is closer to the actual odds.

The problem is the scheme to pay out MegaBall (or PowerBall) single number winners.

MM pays $2 usually for someone who only gets the megaball number. but the odds of that is like one in 27. While this too is a very low payout for the actual odds, it is an order of magnitude more payout than the less likely hits of two wbs +mb, or three white balls, and especially 4 whiteballs (or 3+1.)

The idea of course is that these lotteries are voluntary taxation. The money raised goes into states’ funds.

So the reality is any payout is thus a sort of tax refund.

Breakthrough cases may have been rare pre delta, but they may have become much more common since delta has spread throughout the land. From The Economist article dragging Sen. Sasse:

We ran a statistical model to control for potential links between attitudes towards QAnon and other demographics—such as race, age, gender, education, party affiliation and vote choice in 2020. Our model confirmed that the relationship between church attendance and QAnon was not a statistical fluke: adults who attended church at least once a month were eight percentage points more likely than we predicted to rate QAnon favourably.

What drives belief in conspiracy theories, a lack of religion or too much? (today)

The most accurate indicator in belief in conspiracy theories (whether modern ones like Q or classical ones like the so-called Moon landing hoax) is church attendance. The more you go, the more likely your mind is to be poisoned with conspiracy theories.
