Don’t know if it was Mr. Meadows, but I saw something on FARK that said that it would get 75 million members within like the first week or something. To which the responses were predictable: “75 million bots,” “all of them Nazis”, “It’s already full of Nazis even before opening to the public,” etc.

IIRC, I read about a study that suggested that vaccinated people didn’t “throw off” as much virus as the unvaccinated (you can catch covid easier from an unvaccinated person than a vaccinated person). Does anyone else remember reading/hearing this tidbit?

The appropriate term is “shed”. And that was the observed effect until delta; However, vaccinated people are shedding more of the virus with the delta variant, but still l less than unvaccinated people.

It’s “born again/evangelical” so I’m guessing that people that want to annoy others by telling them how to improve their lives are more likely to be Republican.

I can’t read his op-ed, but it either means evangelical or joined not born into, I think it’s the former. But it’s crappy.

Hey, how did the C****OS**PY go?

It went well. Need more fiber, but no polyps.

After lying in a bed for 45 minutes, because there were like 4 ahead of me (the nurse said they were doing 14 today), I counted three nurses, the anesthesiologist, and the doctor, the anesthesiologist put some magic white fluid in my IV, and then I woke up in recovery.

A non-trivial portion of the ongoing worldview collapse has to do with the traditional roles of males in a Christian society.

According the long-standing Christian belief, women are the ones who are supposed to stay at home and raise children.

To have men do that instead is an affront to masculinity.

Based on information picked up throughout the pandemics…

RNA viruses mutate faster than DNA viruses.

Coronavirus is a single strand RNA virus, influenza is also an RNA virus but it has 8 different chromosome like structures (for lack of a better term) that can undergo recombination. This is why coronaviruses mutate slower than influenza but still faster than DNA ones.

Varicella-zoster Virus or Human Alphaherpesvirus-3 (chickenpox) is a double stranded DNA virus. This makes it very stable.

Measels and Rubella on the other hand, as far as I know are also single stranded RNA viruses. I don’t know why they are particularly stable. Something else is involved here I haven’t stumbled on.

Jim Caviezel’s QAnon Guru Wants to Control Elections

QAnon booster Juan O. Savin has relationships with Roseanne Barr and Jim Caviezel. His fans think he’s JFK Jr. Now he’s recruiting candidates to take control of elections.

Much of Savin’s power on the right derives from a classic QAnon source: Savin’s supporters believe he’s John F. Kennedy Jr. in disguise. During the convention, the Patriot Double Down’s master of ceremonies posted a facial comparison of JFK Jr. and Savin on Facebook, writing “Could it be so?” (In a sign of how widespread the idea that JFK Jr. is alive is among QAnon believers, Savin wasn’t even the only suspected JFK Jr. double on the speaker’s list).

Savin’s beliefs are bizarre even by QAnon standards. In his book, Savin writes that Washington, D.C. is laid out for Masonic devil worship, with the Washington Monument meant to resemble the “missing penis” of an Egyptian god and the State Department’s Foggy Bottom location chosen for its “spells, rituals, and wizardry.” He claims that Dr. Anthony Fauci is making Satanic hand symbols during press conferences, and that the world is run by a cabal descended from the Biblical character Cain. Most importantly to his fans, he insists that the apocalyptic “Storm” promised by QAnon is still coming, even in the face of all evidence to the contrary.

How is #43 is relevant? My only assertion is that they are the ones blocking the BBB legislation; if they had signed on, both infrastructure bills would have passed and the Democrats could tout their accomplishments in the fact of GOP obstructionism. Instead, the progressives haven’t allowed the bipartisan bill to pass before the VA election and Manchin and especially Sinema haven’t been cooperative enough to get the bigger bill passed. If the VA election wasn’t in jeopardy, I would be ok with the delays on the legislation; but it is.

The GQP election strategy in Loudon County Virginia has been to wage culture wars. They have moved operatives from around the country into the county. Among the targets has been the school board. CRT and transgender bathrooms have been particularly pressed. Both are seen here:

re: #10 jaunte

“…Scott Smith was dragged to the ground by county deputies as tempers flared at the June 22 School Board meeting, egged on by protests against new state-mandated protections for transgender students.

According to testimony in the Aug. 17 District Court trial, Smith was arrested during an argument with a woman for whose daughter Smith’s wife had been a Girl Scout leader. Deputies dragged him to the ground, then outside, where he continued struggling and arguing with them, threatening to kick their teeth out. He was taken to the Adult Detention Center and charged with the two misdemeanors.”
loudounnow.com

The above article refers to this issue, which has been highly publicized by right wing activists as a transgender raping a female in a woman’s bathroom. The article paints a much different picture.

In a case that has generated a political firestorm, a Virginia juvenile court judge found sufficient evidence during a trial Monday to sustain charges that a teen sexually assaulted a classmate in the girls’ bathroom of a Loudoun County high school in May.
…snip…
The case generated local and national attention after the parents of the girl assaulted in May said the charged youth was “gender fluid,” prompting renewed backlash against a policy in Loudoun County schools that allows transgender students to use bathrooms that match their gender identity. That policy was adopted after the May assault.
…snip…
Authorities have not commented on the youth’s gender identity and it did not become an issue Monday in court. During the hearing, the 15-year-old victim in the first case testified she had consensual sexual encounters with the defendant on two occasions in a girls’ bathroom at Stone Bridge High School in Ashburn. On May 28, she said, the two arranged to meet again and the youth threw her to the floor and forced her to perform sex acts.

From last thread:
re: #98 Rightwingconspirator

This is a big thing.

The backstory is that two former USSR Republics, Armenia and Azerbaijan border each other. In order to keep them weak and pliant, the USSR government did what they could to ensure that they hated each other. An Armenian majority enclave (Nagorno-Karabakh) was attached to Azerbaijan.

When the Soviet Union dissolved, Nagorno-Karabakh seceded and defeated the woefully unprepared Azerbaijani miltary in the 6 year long First Nagorno-Karabakh War.

Last year there was a rematch.

The Azerbaijani military, supported heavily by Turkey and a number of other actors including foreign mercenaries and Russia, defeated the Armenians in the course of a month and a half. In particular they used a very effective high-tech strategy using drones in many different roles.

(The Azerbaijani military at the grand tactical and operational levels still badly sucks, though.)

The effectiveness of the drones surprised a lot of observers, including in here in the US. The Ukranian move is one result.

In the US, the military is looking at what that means. I was watching a video last night purporting to go over a Marine tactics document.

And that wasn’t what I was talking about at all when I replied to Joe’s post.

Sounds like East Texas has been having an exciting Wednesday with tornadoes while New England has been dealing with a ‘Bomb Cyclone’:

Multiple tornadoes swept across East Texas and adjacent Acadiana in Louisiana on Wednesday morning into the afternoon amid a swarm of thunderstorms. The severe weather is part of major storm system gaining strength in the central states and charging eastward that will bring another dose of rain and windy conditions for the East Coast on Friday into the weekend, hardly 48 hours after New England was rocked by a “bomb cyclone.”

One of the tornadoes, in Orange, Tex., near the border with Louisiana, lofted a vehicle into the air and hurled entire trees sideways Wednesday morning. Another damaging tornado struck near Lake Charles, La., which was devastated by two hurricanes only a year ago.

Violent Texas tornado tosses trees, vehicle as powerful storm develops in central U.S.

[Embedded content]

They’ve apparently adopted the concept of ‘Rotating Villain’, essentially allowing certain Dems to be scapegoats to hide the fact that the entire party is corrupt and is to blame for being the actual obstructionists for everything. THey insist that voting in more Dems wouldn’t matter because ‘suddenly’ more dems would act like Manchin. Nothing matters, Dems are always at fault and must burn forever.

It’s fucking exhausting, and yet I’m still kept up at night at the idea that they might still throw everything to the GOP because they’ve decided that Dems are the only real devils in the world.

It’s rewarding to see the wildlife after letting the field grow up. We have a couple of nesting hawks and owls that have a lot to feed on, and the coyotes come every night.

In Northwestern Fairfax County there is at least one nesting pair of Bald Eagles as well as lots of hawks and owls. None of these were around 40 years ago when I moved here.

There are also lots of coyotes in the county. Although, it is rumored that County Animal Control is trying to keep the coyote population down in favor of the native red fox.

One of my neighbors was trying to raise chickens last year. Their flock suddenly disappeared. I asked and they admitted that the flock had apparently been completely eaten by owls over the course of a couple of weeks.

Fortunately there have been no local shootouts regarding overgrown lawns.

I am sorry to hear that. There are a number of local areas very big into the ‘horse riding culture’. In Virginia, Faquier County and its ‘Gold Cup’ races is one. Upper (Western) Montgomery County is another.

So, reportedly the SpaceX crew capsule has toilet troubles.

Sounds like things will hit the fan unless they fix it. The mission could even get flushed.

(Sorry, couldn’t resist. Okay, not really sorry. What a target rich environment for puns!)

The third paragraph notes some information that somehow did not make it into the gilded press releases.

CAPE CANAVERAL, Fla. — SpaceX is taming some toilet troubles in its Dragon capsules before launching four more astronauts.

The company and NASA want to make sure any toilet leaks won’t compromise the capsule launching early Sunday from Kennedy Space Center or another one that’s been parked at the International Space Station since April.

…snip..

As for the Dragon capsule in orbit, less urine pooled beneath the floor panels than the one that carried a billionaire and three others on a three-day flight, Gerstenmaier said. That’s because the NASA-led crew only spent a day living in it before arriving at the space station.

Definitely but the GOP voting restrictions are going to make that an increasingly less likely possibility. There may have been a time in the past — 40 years ago? — when Republicans and Democrats could collaborate, but that time is long past and it’s unclear whether it can return as long as the GOP is peopled with racists, cowards, and grifters like McConnell, McCarthy, Trump et al.

There are a lot of tracking devices like Tile and Apple AirTag coming onto the market.

Some trackers are bluetooth, some connect to cell networks. Some have GPS. And many crowdsource for tracker location.

So what do you do if the object containing your tracker is stolen? Do you locate on your own? Do you involve the police? Do the local police even care to help you find the item? Do you confront or recover the item on your own?

The third time my 1999 Honda Civic was stolen, I had a plan. I’d taken the usual preventive measures like locking the doors, using a steering-wheel lock and parking on a well-lit street. But I also had something hidden deep in the car: a Tile tracker the size of a coin quietly transmitting its approximate location over Bluetooth.

Later that day, I was across town hiding down the block from my own car as police detained the surprised driver. When the Tile app pinged me with a last known location, I showed up expecting the car to be abandoned. I quickly realized it was still in use, with one person looking through the trunk and another napping in the passenger seat, so I called the police.

…snip…

Officer Tracy Hicks of the Houston Police Department has been tracking down stolen cars, bikes and other property for decades. He not only knows what AirTags are and how they work, but has them on his trailer, car and labradoodle. He’s adamant that AirTag users should never confront a person who they think has taken their property. Stolen property can also quickly change hands or be sold.

“Always, always call the police,” said Hicks. “You might be a big guy and think, I might get my revenge. No, you don’t know. The person in your car might not be the person who stole it.”

I found my stolen Honda Civic using a Bluetooth tracker. It’s the latest controversial weapon against theft.
AirTags and other Bluetooth trackers can find stolen cars, bikes and bags. But what happens when you find the person who took them?

If VA goes red next Tuesday, that loss may very well be laid at the feet of Democrats who couldn’t get major bills passed after the American Rescue Plan; yes, Manchin and Sinema were to blame but the public is not going to take that view. Also, as has been true for decades, the Democrats are ineffective at combatting the GOP culture wars, now being waged openly and dishonestly with the CRT lies polluting the airwaves.

Speaking as a Virginian (well, Washingtonian transplant), I can say with pretty fair confidence that if the state goes red next week it will be because the VA GQP went back to their old playbook of running the least offensive candidate they could find and had him lie his ass off about everything. The last two Repubs who ran for the governorship were (respectively) insane and an unabashed MAGAt. Right, such as giving about a single day’s worth of local coverage to Youngkin admitting when he thought he was having a private conversation that he’s being dishonest about his positions because he knows he can’t get elected if he admits what he really believes, but days long concern trolling because McAuliffe had the audacity, the gall, the sheer cheek to say that parents shouldn’t be deciding what a school’s curriculum is.

Measles and rubella are nearly extinct so they have a vanishingly small platform in which to mutate, would be my guess.

Modern economics, using monetary policy designed to create and entrench a Capitalist plutocracy, combined with the use of state-managed security and information technology has made democracy expendable and even the enemy.

Our American democracy has been slowly strangled to death for 40 years now. Democratic administration after administration has more often than not been merely content with holding the door against the invading monster instead of passing a progressive agenda. And now the current crop of young Republican monsters has openly declared war on democracy as they see their goal of a new fascist utopia within sight.

Memories of Grandma Bacon making buckwheat crepes so thin and so tasty when doused with REAL maple syrup.

Grandma also made sourdough silver dollar pancakes which she would pour on blueberry syrup she made from scratch.

I’ve been making malted pancakes with the King Arthur recipe. I went to the cupboard for the malt powder and it was hard as a rock. It would not come out of the jar so I put it in the microwave thinking that might help. The foil remnant around the rim from the original seal flared up like gunpowder lit from a match. I finally got the rock malt out and put it into my little blender and got it beat back into powder form.

I read the page. It looks like it’s got a lot of what we wanted in it: Free preschool, affordable child care provisions, extending the child tax credit, tax credits for home solar and EVs, expansions to the ACA and Medicaid, extending the EITC, and is paid for by setting a corporate minimum tax, a tax on foreign profits from American companies, a 5% tax bump over $10M and an additional 3% over $25M, closing the Medicare tax loophole, and investing in the IRS to more thoroughly audit people making more than $400k.

RT’s messaging when it comes to the COVID-19 pandemic is very different depending on the audience: Russian-speakers get the right info about prevention, masks, and vaccination, while foreign audiences are fed falsehoods and conspiracy theories. We compared the “two faces” of RT.

But the problem comes in that Russians are just as mistrustful of their own sources as they are of any other messages

If they have nothing to add to the conversation, why talk to them?

Because part of the situation we’re in is because GOP obstructionism has been normalized to mundanity, and treated as something that’s not just a given, but so normal as to just accept as a neutral fact, rather than an abnormal brinksmanship tactic that it is. It’s a shift of burden wholly on the Dems to get anything done, and allows the bullshit rhetoric of ‘see, if Dems wanted this, they could do it just like that, and the fact that they can’t means they really don’t want it, it’s all THEIR fault!’. It’s relieving the GOP of agency in a way that only helps them and relieves them of any burden of governance, where if the flipside was happening, the only story would be Dem intransigence.

Republicans cannot be let off the hook time and time again, especially when doing so simply reinforces the idea that somehow, some way, everything is necessarily the fault of the Dems.

In the olden days when I went to the opera with my late husband (he was the opera buff!), there were short/quick lines for the men’s room while we women had to wait forever. They eventually remodeled the women’s room, tripled the number of stalls, and suddenly the long, slow lines were a thing of the past. It does typically take longer for women and so for theaters and other venues where there is a large attendance, it makes sense to have single gendered facilities.

Just got another call about my car’s extended warranty. The newest vehicle I own is a 2014 Toyota Camry.

The last car I owned must have been in a previous life, and they’re still calling me.

We should ban the teaching of Critical Reich Theory: we only fixate on the concentration camps and jackboots trampling Europe instead of looking at the positive developments like Autobahns, space technology and all those advances in pediatric medicine…

My 1970 1/2 base model AMC Gremlin last resided in a Vernon, California junkyard yet I still get those warranty robocalls…

Throw this on your computer or tv LOUD and press 1 to speak to a representative and then tell them you cannot hear them could they pleas speak up. What? I’m sorry could you repeat that?

If you get them screaming you win.

Borowitz Report (Note that The New Yorker feels the need to label this as “satire.”)

Manchin Will Agree to Halloween Only if Candy Is Completely Removed

Signalling his opposition to a storied tradition, Senator Joe Manchin said that he will agree to Halloween only if candy is completely eliminated.

The West Virginia senator, arguing that the “big Halloween giveaway is over,” said that billions are wastefully spent on candy each year.

“People seem to think that children going from house to house to get candy for free is fun,” Manchin said. “I call it something else: socialism.”

Manchin’s neighbors said that his opposition to candy on Halloween is long-standing. “Kids skip his house, because he just gives out coal,” one neighbor said.

My uncle replumbed the windshield washer tank to dispense alcohol into the car interior. He was a very “social” salesman who spent a lot of time on the road in the 60’s. Don’t recommend but it’s not a difficult hack.

We’ve seen several instances of what I call “the confluence of derp”, where two disparate lines of stupidity merge into one super-stupidity that manages to be even crazier than the sum of its parts. The GQP, however, has been rolling them all up into one Mississippi River of dumb, and the next tributary is going to be… Sovereign Citizens!

Obama with his huge majorities didn’t get a public option because of a single Senator. If Biden succeeds and gets both bills, it’s an amazing miracle given the obstacles he faces. Even the weakened BBB is more than has been done for average Americans since the ACA. Let’s hope Manchin and Sinema stay loyal and perhaps more good will come our way.

The paperwork is done in the format of a sovereign citizen/freeman-on-the-land pseudo-legal gibberish document. There’s probably some significant overlap between sovcits and anti-vaxxers anyway, but now the sovcits are applying their legal intimidation techniques to private citizens under color of anti-vaxx propaganda.

Burr Called His Brother-in-Law Before Stock Dump

After Sen. Richard Burr (R-NC) dumped more than $1.6 million in stocks in February 2020 a week before the coronavirus market crash, he called his brother-in-law,” ProPublica reports.

“They talked for 50 seconds. Burr, according to the SEC, had material nonpublic information regarding the incoming economic impact of coronavirus.”

“The very next minute, Burr’s brother-in-law, Gerald Fauth, called his broker” and “dumped stock the same day Burr did
