Scott Smith was dragged to the ground by county deputies as tempers flared at the June 22 School Board meeting, egged on by protests against new state-mandated protections for transgender students.

According to testimony in the Aug. 17 District Court trial, Smith was arrested during an argument with a woman for whose daughter Smith’s wife had been a Girl Scout leader. Deputies dragged him to the ground, then outside, where he continued struggling and arguing with them, threatening to kick their teeth out. He was taken to the Adult Detention Center and charged with the two misdemeanors.”

If the root of all evil really were polarization, then Manchin’s position would be plausible. But we are actually dealing with the radicalization of a reactionary white minority - a problem that is obscured by the “polarization” narrative, and exacerbated dramatically by Manchin.

It may be a white minority, but it is a very widespread and powerful minority — and they and their allies managed to get 74 million votes for TFG, have 50 votes in the Senate, and 212 members in the House. To cast those numbers as anything other than reflecting a polarized nation is to ignore reality. Manchin lives in a deep red state and his survival depends on being far more moderate than those who are fortunate to represent bastions of blue like New York, Illinois, or California. Biden won the Democratic nomination because he was perceived as moderate, and not a far left progressive like Bernie or Elizabeth (note: she was my favorite, but handicapped both by being a woman and deeply detested by the Bernie wing).

A very close friend, originally from Milwaukee, but now living near me, has expressed hostility against Jayapal and other progressives, not because she objects to their policies, but because she sees them as damaging Biden and the Democrats beyond repair due to their failure to pass the bipartisan infrastructure bill. That bill would be cast as a substantial Biden win. I have repeatedly told her to be patient and wait to see what happens but she is deeply afraid. She also is upset that more isn’t being done to get voting rights legislation passed, but again, that may require getting this other legislation through first. And it does require a change to filibuster rules, unlike the Biden infrastructure bill that can pass under current Senate practices.

While pretending it’s about concerned parents, rather than angry stupid parents fried by Republican propaganda. Hawley did not show a picture of the fascists that show up at school board meetings. He cherry picked one parent who needed to be detained because he’d lost his mind because his daughter was attacked, skipping all the people who lost their minds because they seek out propaganda as a substitute for news.

This is my assumption too, that he feels like he shouldn’t say something like that as it would be treated with the weight of the DOJ’s authority and that might reflect badly. Which is admirable but self-defeating. As we’ve found out in the last couple decades, being the adult in the room means precious little when the only thing it gets you is blame.

Unfortunately, we tend to see what happens if a Dem does show any emotion or outrage.. It’s the ‘Angry Black Man’ syndrome, where the anger becomes the story and drowns out everything else, including how valid that anger actually is. The anger itself is treated as proof that the person and the issue they’re emotional about is inherently unserious and thus invalid and worth nothing but mockery. Meanwhile, again, GOP gets away with it because it’s both expected of them, and treated as valid by default simply because it’s from a Republican.

Three things need saying. One, that “critical race theory” is becoming the most destructive political boogeyman since Joseph McCarthy fear-mongered about Communists hiding behind every bush and tree.

Two, that this political boogeyman is being used by Republican state lawmakers to achieve what they have wanted — to use the power of the state to censor information and to police thought. We are close to updating the old Cold War pursuit of “un-American activities.”

Three, that by censoring information and policing thought, the Republicans can replace knowledge and understanding with lies and propaganda advancing a preferred way of seeing America, to wit: In America, everyone gets a fair shake in life. Social ills like poverty and racism are individual failings, not societal ones. Everything is fine. Nothing to worry about. Except “those people” making trouble.

Ukraine Strikes Russian-Backed Forces Using Turkish-Made TB2 Drones For The First Time

Ukraine’s military has confirmed that it conducted its first ever strike using a Turkish-made Bayraktar TB2 armed drone yesterday. The TB2 destroyed a 122mm D-30 howitzer belonging to Russian-backed separatist forces in the country’s eastern Donbass region that Ukrainian authorities said was responsible for killing one of its soldiers and wounding another. This is the latest conflict to see the use of Bayraktar’s flagship product, which has already been employed to great effect in recent years by Turkish forces in Syria, by Libyan government forces in that country, and by Azerbaijan’s military against Armenian troops in the disputed Nagorno-Karabakh region. In each case, these unmanned aircraft were instrumental in holding back the opposing side’s forces, if not outright defeating them.

Video reportedly showing the strike had emerged online ahead of the General Staff of the Armed Forces of Ukraine’s official confirmation. The General Staff’s post on Facebook about the incident included the same video clip, seen below, making clear that this was indeed footage of the TB2 destroying the D-30. Ukrainian officials had disclosed that TB2s were conducting reconnaissance flights in the Donbass region back in April.

Last week I posted about a vaccine hesitant friend who was facing termination from his job as of 11/2/21 if he didn’t get the shot. He’s had this job for several years now and it pays well with pretty good benefits. So while I wasn’t “beat him over head” about it, I did try to gently suggest it would probably be wiser to get the shot and keep his livelihood intact (as well as have more doors open for future opportunities) than to lose his job. Especially since he would have to compete for other jobs with other folks who refused to vaccinate and got canned.

Well, the story has a happy ending. He’s getting his first shot tomorrow.

In US politics, data has become king. Firms that collect, analyze, enhance, and sell voter data—the information candidates and campaigns crave so they can effectively target voters—have achieved top-dog status in the elections industry. And one of the most important data outfits on the Democratic side—and, consequently, one of the more influential players in politics today—is a for-profit company that few Democratic voters, grassroots activists, or cable news junkies have ever head of: TargetSmart. It provides crucial services to the Democratic National Committee, state Democratic parties, and a wide assortment of progressive outfits and makes millions of dollars a year. On its website, the firm has posted a significant declaration: It “has always focused on the Democratic Party, Democratic candidates, and progressive organizations” and “does not work with Republican candidates.” But a Mother Jones investigation found that the owners and founders of TargetSmart also own a company that earns millions by helping to elect Republicans, including far-right GOP state legislators who have tried to overturn the 2020 election results, who were involved in the January 6 march on the US Capitol that turned into a seditious riot, and who have been part of the Republican crusade to skew election laws against the Democrats.

Ran me over. 3 days of freezing cold sweating through t shirt after T shirt. The second shot kicked me, but this was worse.
No one size fits all. But we’re good.
I’d do it again and again with all the brain dead know it alls I have to wade through around here.
And to put the icing on the cake I got a sinus infection.
I’ll get my flu shot in a week or so.
Then I’ll run a few red lights and increase my speed on curves.

3 days getting baked and watching TV with low energy beats a hospital stay, and maybe feeling 20 years older coming out of the infection.

I felt crappy after my booster. Maybe a TINY bit worse than my second shot (I think a degree of fever vs. a half degree). I think reactions cover a very wide range of possibilities, so you can’t really judge how you’ll react.

They’re not saying they’re Seig Heiling Nazis. They’re calling sensible people who believe in public health Nazis. Of course these folks constantly project, and the bottom line is that people who are part of a fascist movement are giving a Nazi salute. They just don’t understand what we see when they do that.

re: #162 Belafon

Had a discussion with my cousin over the vaccine. And her argument boils down to “my boyfriend was vaccinated, I wasn’t, he caught it and was really sick, I got it from him but didn’t have any symptoms, so the vaccine is worthless and I’m not getting it” with a side of “look at how many people got sick from the vaccine.”

The vaccine might be useless to her if she handled infection that well, but it’s also not likely to make her feel very sick if COVID didn’t, and she wouldn’t be grouped in with idiots who are trying to kill themselves anymore, and would be able to travel and attend events.

There’s more upside than downside for her.

I felt like crap for about three days after the 2nd dose, but that is also better than getting COVID unprotected, and I’ll get a booster as soon as I can.

3 days getting baked and watching TV with low energy beats a hospital stay, and maybe feeling 20 years older coming out of the infection.

Or in other words, “People who want their fellow Americans and non-citizen residents to die from and suffer from long-term damage and harass people who don’t like harming their fellow citizens, complain about getting the middle finger from high school children who don’t hate their countrymen.”

If he got it while vaccinated and was really sick, getting it while unvaccinated may very well have killed him. She can think on that.

So are the people who write to them. Let’s not forget how Teen Vogue was doing more serious journalism on the Trump administration than the Mainstream media was, at least for a while.

IIRC, I read about a study that suggested that vaccinated people didn’t “throw off” as much virus as the unvaccinated (you can catch covid easier from an unvaccinated person than a vaccinated person). Does anyone else remember reading/hearing this tidbit?

Cult indie band the Posies are splitting up after several women made allegations of sexual misconduct against frontman Ken Stringfellow.

One woman accused the musician of forcing her into sex in a men’s toilet; another said she had been in an abusive relationship with him since 2017.

A third said Stringfellow bit her, leaving marks, and that she once woke up to find him having sex with her.

He categorically denied the claims, saying, “I am not down with violence”.
.
.
.
Stringfellow’s long-term bandmate Jon Auer told the station he had “left the Posies very quickly”, after hearing one woman’s account of sexual abuse.

“What she described to me was super disturbing, and it made my position immediately clear,” he said in an email.

“I confronted Ken about it on a phone call on Aug[ust] 4, 2021, and cancelled our upcoming shows, and flat-out told him that I wouldn’t be working with him anymore.”

Drummer Frankie Siragusa, who had been a member of the Posies since 2015, left the band earlier this summer, and confirmed his departure was prompted by the allegations.

About the pie

Blue Owl Bakery ships its Levee High Caramel Pecan Apple Pie nationwide on Goldbelly! The Blue Owl’s world-famous Levee High Caramel Pecan Apple Pie¼ is one of Oprah’s Favorite Things! This pie in the sky features 18 Golden Delicious Apples, piled high in a made-from-scratch crust. To achieve their signature height, each apple is hand-peeled and hand-placed in the pie. Enjoy a hot, fresh Blue Owl Levee High Caramel Apple Pecan Pie baked in your own oven.

Everyone in the historic town of Kimmswick, Missouri, knows Mary Hostetter’s Blue Owl, founded in 1983, is the spot for a delicious, country-style meal. Word of her famously tall, flaky-crusted Levee-High Apple Pie quickly traveled around the world and made her down-home Blue Owl Bakery a source for a true slice of heaven. The Levee-High Apple Pie was named one of Oprah’s Favorite Things!

The appropriate term is “shed”. And that was the observed effect until delta; However, vaccinated people are shedding more of the virus with the delta variant, but still l less than unvaccinated people.
