Yeah, we get it. Right wingers get off on knowing people who were vaccinated got breakthrough cases of covid. They think it’s proof vaccinations don’t work.
That the person didn’t require hospitalization, ICU, intubation, or die, is proof the vaccination worked. It prevented serious illness. No vaccination is 100% effective, and not vaccinating increases your chances of getting seriously ill, require hospitalization, or die substantially.
That’s why this remains a pandemic among the unvaccinated. Those who are vaccinated are the ones keeping the entire health care system from collapsing in many parts of the country. Omicron appears “mild” only because so many have gotten vaccinated. Delta never went away either.

Ivermectin got the big boost after a similar type of chatter in India. Turns out that if you’re able to help stop parasitic infections, you improve your chances of surviving a viral infection like covid. But in a population that doesn’t have parasites normally? It is worse than nothing.
I’m waiting for someone to suggest immolation as a means to prevent covid, followed by bathing in the Ganges. Or is it the other way around.

I’ve mentioned this before, but I know someone from Victoria, BC, who was a staunch anti masker. She unfriended me on Facebook when I pushed back on her disinformation.
This woman was also six months pregnant when she decided that masking was a scam/conspiracy. The baby’s probably approaching her second birthday soon. I try not to think about the vax situation in that family, because I get really upset for the kid’s health and well being.
And I’m not gonna lie: I tend to think of Canadians a lot of times as “What if Americans were nice and not fucking insane?” It was really upsetting to see the one Canadian I personally knew go off the fucking deep end while pregnant with her first kid.

Dr. Lizardo and No Malarkey! were talking about Endtimes stuff in the last thread. I’m just going to point out that it wasn’t “The Omen” that popularized a lot of those tropes. One could make the argument that we have Hal Lindsey’s “The Late Great Planet Earth” (published in 1970, declared the biggest non-fiction bestseller of the 1970s, and completely ignored by discerning 10 YOs rummaging through the store paperbacks who preferred RL Delderfield’s “God is an Englisman”) which introduced this to a mass audience.
That said, Lindsey wasn’t original…one could make the further argument that this whole endtimes 666 thing had been making its way through white Evangelicalism since CI Scofield published his annotated Bible in 1909. (In 2022, still in print, and available in KJV, NIV, NKJV versions.)
The tl;dr is that this stuff had been floating around for decades before “The Omen.” That is all.

Yeah, hahahaha. Back before end to end computing, the hours before 10 and after 3 were consumed with manual crediting and debiting, bringing each depositor’s account up to date, filing paid negotiable documents and so on. This despite the fact that MICR encoding had been introduced around 1960 and REALLY sped up the processing of negotiable items. All that paper STILL had to be filed and it was manual and time consuming.
So bankers’ hours, yah, nah…

It’s comicial the using urine as a medical cure is back. Here’s a post I made in 2009 about the Army’s attempt to use urine as a medical cure.
Again, I swear everything in this post is true, so help me.
Here a true story about the Army’s attempt to cure spinal meningitis:
I took my Army basic training at Ft Dix in New Jersey in March/April, 1965. At the time there were several dozen cases of spinal meningitis on the Post. Some genius in the Army Medical Corp thought he had a brilliant idea for a cure using urine!. So, every morning everyone had to pee into a very clean garbage can. Heaven forbid if anyone tossed a cigarette butt or paper towel in that special P-can. Two trainees then carried the can to the curbside and stood “guard” waiting for the collection truck. Very important duty guarding a can of pee!
I swear on my little pinky the story is true….hey, it’s the Army!
What goes around comes around.
This could also be woven into a story about the Army concealing a “Proven Medical Treatment”.

As someone pointed out above, the problem with “making the amendment process easier” is that any such attempt would have to go through the current amendment process in the first place. Whose difficulties can easily be spun as a feature, not a bug….

We would hit the Don Cheery Sports Grill in North Bay Ont when we did our fishing trips to Quebec in the 90’s. We always stayed in North Bay over night and then drove into Quebec the next morning to be loaded into the boat and cruise back to our cabin for the week. Put in at Laniel Quebec on Lake Kipawa. Was always a great trip Dad, myself and friends would do. Dad had been going up since the late 50’s. In the 60’s - 70’s when I got old enough I started to go. So beautiful and peaceful. We went up fishing a few times in the 90’s after I came back home from my running around the country through the late 70’s and 80’s. Wish dad was well enough to go one more time, but those days are past.

There’s been a big change in the last 24 hours. Current temp is 38 F and we’re having a little light rain. Most of the rain today has been light so we haven’t had much flooding…yet. Forecast is for more rain so flooding is still possible
The current conditions of the roads is exciting. Little bit of rain on snow packed, icy streets makes driving an adventure. Slicker than skating rinks…LOL.
We’ve had several businesses (including Fred Meyer) temporarily close due heavy snow blocking drains on their flat roofs. Anyone who wants a job shoveling snow off roofs can demand top dollar pay.

tomorrow: high 20º
tomorrow night: low 17º

NYC public school attendance is down to 70%, when a pre-covid regular attendance day was 90% or higher. Some schools are seeing massive drops in attendance, and schools are finding it hard to get staff or substitutes to handle all the absences.
The next few weeks are going to be bad, and people who are talking about going remote and criticizing going remote ignore that we should do so on a limited basis. No one is talking about going remote for the remainder of the year.

Mystery Surrounds FAA Order To Halt All West Coast Air Traffic After North Korean Missile Launch
On the afternoon of January 10, 2021, at around 2:30 PM PST, the FAA issued a ground stop order to all planes, at least in the western United States. The temporary pause on all movements to and from airports included aviators being ordered to land and lasted roughly between seven and 20 minutes before it was lifted and services returned to normal. There has so far been no explanation given for this action. In this vacuum of information, some are connecting the highly peculiar event to another ballistic missile test launch out of North Korea, the second in less than a week, that traveled 435 miles from its launch point, impacting relatively far out into the sea of Japan.
thedrive.com
One pilot flying into Yuma told The War Zone they were alerted to what controllers called a “national ground stop” and ordered to land before it was lifted. On a Reddit/ATC thread, controllers were discussing the puzzling ground stop, which appears to have been contained to just the western United States. Some commented that they had not seen anything like it since 9/11. There was also an image that supposedly shows the flight slips with the ground stop orders on them that our friend @OSINTTechnical has reposted, as you can see below. We cannot confirm their authenticity at this time.

When people claim vaccinations don’t stop transmission, the evidence suggests the opposite - it reduces transmission. Combined with masking, and you can stop transmission.
Danish study of household Delta transmission. Even when infected, vaccinated people were less likely than unvaxed to transmit, evidently because vaccination — while unable to prevent infection in those people — reduced their viral load, thereby protecting others in the household. https://t.co/8IiDB3WZ1J

Anyone know what a CT value is?
I had to go and look it up, but it stands for “cycle threshold” and indicates how many times the machine had to go over the sample to positively identify viral material. A lower CT implies a higher viral load, as the test didn’t have to run as long to come back positive.

Simply an opinion, and probably of equal value to a Republican advising the Democrats on what to do, but I think the progressive wing needs to find a new or different leader than Bernie. And drop the cult-like worship of their figurehead as well since the authoritarian vibe it contains is disturbing and generally the anti-thesis of a lot of their message.
I tried to corner the pro-Bernie friend of mine once on why he’s pro-Bernie. And it boils down to that he’s a social liberal with a serious distaste for standard politics and has a solid “pox on both their houses” view towards the GOP and Democrats. So he sort of wants the “pie in the sky” stuff without paying much attention to the necessary sausage-making and taking what can be gotten in the current climate. (He is *not* far enough in the weed to vote 3rd party. He understands what the threat of Trump and GOP is.)
An interesting tidbit of news regarding one of the UK’s most well-known missing persons cases:
Two men have been arrested in connection with the disappearance of a teenager who went missing 15 years ago.
Andrew Gosden, from Doncaster, was last seen on 14 September 2007, aged 14.
Two men, aged 38 and 45, were arrested on suspicion of kidnap and human trafficking in London. Both have since been released under investigation.
The older man was also arrested on suspicion of possessing indecent images of children, South Yorkshire Police said.
Both men were arrested on 8 December with the assistance of officers from the Metropolitan Police.
Det Insp Andy Knowles, of South Yorkshire Police, said: “Our priority at this time is supporting Andrew’s family while we work through this new line of inquiry in the investigation.
Long story short, Gosden went missing in 2007 after ditching school, withdrawing some cash (£200, IIRC) from his bank account and buying a one-way train ticket to London, which is 155 miles from his home. He was last seen on CCTV leaving King’s Cross station and he’s never been seen or heard from since. Seems like there’s been a break in the case, hopefully.

I just wish someone knew what to DO about it. Aside from voting the bastards out, which clearly the hicks over in Wisconsin have no intention of doing, there’s no third-party enforcement mechanism to sit the Republicans down and say, “Do your goddamn jobs or get tossed.”
Getting tossed is what the voters should be doing if their elected servants are not doing the job.
So I guess this means sufficient numbers of voters in Wisconsin are apathetic, purposefully ignorant, or approving of these activities.
Much as the voters as a whole in the country are causing a lot of self-inflicted damage on the country.

Charles Gaba also points out that had Wallensky stopped at the top level - that the vaccinations are highly effective, that would have been great. She then dug into the comorbidities of those who died despite being vaccinated, and that’s the part that media highlighted, rather than the overwhelming effectiveness of the vaccinations.

I agree, and part of the problem is that the gamesmanship that these assholes play with the rules allows them to keep on doing what they’re doing, for longer than they should be allowed to do so. By all rights, at this point, the GOP should be fully out of power in most places, and especially at the federal level.
I had a hankering for a slice of pizza for about four days. (Have generally been avoiding pizza for the past few years due to the carb hit.) Yesterday I finally decided to hit the pizza joint a few blocks away to get a slice for lunch.
Went in. 6-7 employees (including an elderly gentlemen who I assume possibly was original owner who has handed running the place to an offspring) including who I assume was a delivery driver. 1-2 customers in the place as well waiting for orders or eating.
Not a single mask in sight.

The main problem is that the Wisconsin Supreme Court has elected justices, and currently has a conservative majority, despite SC elections supposedly being ‘non partisan’ (as in not by party nomination). So barring the replacement of one of the conservative justices on the court, the GOP basically holds court in everything except the Governorship, which they’ve wholly defanged until the next time the GOP wins the seat, by which they’ll decide that the executive branch deserves more power because Calvinball rules.
And we notably have a USSC about to give the GOP all the unicorns it ever wanted, so….yeah.

It’s not just the “hicks”. Please note that the last several cycles every statewide election has gone Democrat and only the extreme gerrymandering of my state has kept the Genocidal GOP in power. That’s why we’re fighting so hard against the GGOP in that in regard to the new census. And do not make the mistake of forgetting how important having a good governor is here since they do not have enough votes to override a veto and we have a line-item budget veto.
re: #345 Citizen K
This is going back to the developing theme in American politics that literally everything must be political. There really is no such thing as a “non-partisan” sphere anymore. Republicans, especially, have fused their personal identity with their political one to such an extent that judges, who should be judging based on the law and not based on their personal ideology, are instead appointed or elected based on how they conform to standard political talking points. Or at least, conservative judges are; judges appointed or elected by Democrats tend to be people who do the job as presented, which is why we are seeing such asymmetry in the partisan-ness of court decisions.

From what I’ve read, the administration and Dem colleagues have been trying to do what they can to actually get him to budge. Let him draw up a compromise, threaten and bully pulpit him, offer him juicy pork to get in his good graces, etc. The problem is that by Manchin’s own admission, he doesn’t want to see anything done. He’s happy where things are now and refuses to budge, and his status as vote #49/50 means he absolutely knows he represents the tipping point. He sees himself as having all the leverage so what’s the point in not lording it over the Dem establishment because it gives him basically all the power. He is a negotiation brick wall because he doesn’t actually seem to want anything.

Joy Reid had some woman on who wasn’t getting vaccinated because she already had Covid…twice. No, that wasn’t stupid enough…she gave the woman 10 minutes of air time to argue with herself and some other pro-vaccine woman about getting the shot. I looked at my wife and said, “Imagine how many people out there are going to resist getting vaccinated because they think that idiot has a valid point.”
re: #362 William Lewis

It depends. We only know so much of the sausage making going on in the backgrounds. But I know how the DC press would end up covering things if Dems tried negotiating with Manchin in an overt adversarial way, and we’ve seen how powerful media perception is in crafting the electorate’s perception, especially when it means something bad for Dems.

Crab cakes:
2 decent sized Dungeness crabs (gave me about 12 ounces of crab meat)
4 oz raw shrimp (I used wild Argentinian from Costco)
1/4 cup heavy cream
salt, pepper, a little lemon zest, squeeze of lemon juice and Sunny Paris seasoning (dried shallot, chive, etc.)
pulse shrimp about a dozen times to get ‘em pasty. Add cream and crab and pulse together - cream and shrimp will bind the crab - no bread crumbs, eggs, mayo needed -
form patties and place on a plastic wrap lined plate in fridge for a half hour before cooking.

Rest assured, within a few months after a Republican takes control of the White House in Jan. 2025, several Democratic leaders will be arrested, paraded in front of cameras, be put on kangaroo court trial, and sentenced to death …unless they confess their “crimes”.
Even more reporters and editors will also be arrested for Sedition “anti-American” charges and also disappeared or put on show trial.
Twitter, FB, and other social media outlets will be forced to open up their services to even the most heinous racists and violence-touting right wing terror organizations or senior officers will be arrested and also put on trial.
This IS what will happen. Lots and lots of people are in denial. Just like those who thought Republicans could never stage a coup or one year later, publicly support it fully.

re: #417 Decatur Deb
Ten months to mid-terms, and it’s time to stop looking hapless.
I’m curious what that means considering Biden has gotten more major bills passed in his first year than most presidents do in a term.
Manchin and Sinema suck. But “he hasn’t won the next fight” is not how we’re going to be able to keep governing.
I understand the persistence of the defeatism. I really do. The Republican Party is hopelessly corrupt and evil, and they’re just getting away with it because a large number of Americans are also corrupt and evil. And I, myself, have occasional bouts where I’m feeling defeated and parroting the doom-and-gloom lines. But I’m on the fightin’ side of the pendulum right now; I’m not beaten yet, no sirree. Nothing’s over until it’s over. The Justice Department has made it clear that they’re not done yet, and the same is true of the January 6 Commission. The midterms aren’t decided yet. The gerrymandered maps are bad, yes, but they’re not so spectacularly bad as to end all hope. I, for one, plan to keep riding this ride to the bitter end, because This. Is. My. HOME. And I won’t give up on it.

A large share also unaware, clueless or actively ignore it, being convinced that things are the same on both sides of the aisle.

So Ray Epps is the man responsible for the violence?
Who?
Following the example of Trump in conducting biological warfare:
It really should be a bigger deal that Gorsuch refuses to wear a mask while he sits three feet away from a 67 year old woman with diabetes, but the absolute callousness of Republicans generally and Gorsuch specifically is just expected by the press corps and passes w/o comment

I will never stop voting. And if necessary, will March again if this pandemic ever slows down.

Electoral politics is a battle of perceptions. Our presentation would be improved by a few heads on pikes.

Dude, so far as it goes, I agree completely. I think that the place we go separate ways is that I do expect it to go south after the next election and that there will be, at best, a level of terrorism and violence on the level of The Troubles in Northern Ireland. This will happen Irregardless of the nominal winner of the next election. The fascists will push violence to either give them an illegitimate victory or to reenforce a stolen victory.
I may well end up dead or in prison in the next couple of years because I will be actively fighting for my family and friends and that won’t go over well in that situation. But I’m still the same person who carried a rifle for this nation in the 80’s when I vowed to defend the constitution. I can’t see doing otherwise now.
Hope this makes some sense.

I am afraid there is no way to defeat these people without descending to their level.
They know that, too and exploit the hesitancy of their opponents, seeing it as a weakness.

As I said, that’s where we differ; I’ve already move into the place that expects it to go south.
To me? Arm yourself. Create a “Cell” of two close friends who also know 2 close friends that _YOU_ don’t know. Put together a bugout bag and have a way to contact the members of your cell. It’s ironic but this is scary accurate…

Living long enough to get an education is a good priority.
We have had a long time to make preparations for sending schoolkids back to a safe situation: extra teaching and support staff, expanded facilities, safety equipment and protocols in place, but that was not the point.
The point was to just get the kids back to their daytime babysitters.

And don’t forget the situation in the house: Ohio, with 16 Congressional districts, voted 56% GOP to 44% Democrat. That might seem like it should split up to 9-7 or 10-6 for the GOP.
They control 12 seats.

It’s people like her who got us Bush 43 in 1980 and Trump in 2016. They will be responsible for the end of democracy in this nation, all while blaming those who don’t worship Bernie.

Even the governorship doesn’t keep the GOP from basically running Wisconsin like a dictatorship. They just straight up own the state and do as they please, and will probably be rewarded outrageously for that as usual.
Another state where gerrymandering and voter suppression has turned a purple state into an ungovernable one with the GOP holds control because it runs the legislature, even though more voters vote Democratic.

re: #425 Florida Panhandler
More than 1 year later, no Republican Congress terrorist enablers and co-conspirators have been arrested or let alone be sentenced to prison.
The thread is dead, but I have to add one little word: bullshit.
