My back up girlfriend lives in Cincinnati…she’s very happy tonight. (Back when my wife and I first started dating they shared a ski lease together. I’d always help her unload her car when she arrived so she said I was like having a back up boyfriend…and she became my B.U.G. - when the three of us would go out to lunch together I’d order for them - as one does - and say , “My girlfriend wants to have the X and my back up girlfriend will have the Y…” got some fun replies from wait staff on that.

So as Merle is taking up a lot of my time Milo is largely unsupervised…this morning, I’m out in the living room with Merle and Milo is in the bedroom with my wife. I walk in after about an hour or so and there is dog-bed foam all over the bedroom. Instead of asking her if she was aware of this, I said, “I’m really glad his hobby isn’t building bombs…” which got her to laugh.

This town, like so many others, is at the confluence of two rivers. I live north of it, work north of it, and have hardly been to the southern half of the town, south of the littler river. Tomorrow is my first day working at the southern location of the bakery I work for. Today I test-rode the commute. I got lost. I live about a mile north of the little river, and my destination is about a mile south of it. There’s a confluence of three state highways where the two rivers come together. Bike paths don’t have to follow anything, because people who ride bikes are kids who don’t care anyway. ///////////////////////////

I sort of got lost. I knew where I was, but I had never been there, and did not know how to NOT get there. I knew how to get where I was going, I had only gone about a half mile out of my way. I found my destination, and I had no trouble getting back. That’s the route I will take tomorrow morning.

Yeah, the water year down here started out strong with those fall rains.

But… nothing since. And we’re supposed to be in the middle for what passes as our “rainy” season.

So while the water-year (starts in Oct) looked promising, and loquats sure appreciate that fall rain which encouraged them to bloom, it is beginning to look like this water year could be trouble.

Rainfall total since 1 Oct is only 6.13 inches, which might be “normal” if we had some rain in the next two weeks to add to it, but alas nothing in the forecast.

The Belgians getting the right to disconnect from work

Why is this still a thing?

This was a pre-Covid issue as well.

It is perfectly normal to expect staff to be available from roughly 8am to 6pm, and to have them report that they are going to be absent for more than an hour at midday or more than fifteen minutes at other times, but unless they are management, there is no reason for them to be expected to respond promptly or at all outside those hours.

It is a throw back to the early days of the bar when we had a vibrant industrial base here in town with factories working 3 shifts. Guys would get off night shift and want to have a shot and beer, so the bar would open at 7AM. When current owner took it over from his dad he kept the same hours. We still have a few industries that work shift work, but not near as many as in the 50’s, 60’s and into the 70’s.

RIGHT NOW: Russian citizen arrested for drone flight over Drottningholm Castle, according to information to Aftonbladet

Am I realistic in assuming that a normal average Russian would have enough self-preservation sense not to pull a stunt like that?

Police have arrested a Russian citizen who flew a drone above Drottningholm, according to information to Aftonbladet.
The man is suspected of violating the Protection Act.
Säpo is informed of the matter.
Police were alerted to Drottningholm Castle yesterday.
- It was at 13 o’clock that we were ordered there, says Anna Westberg at the police in the Stockholm region.
At the scene, a Russian man in his 40s who was flying a drone over the castle could be arrested.
- The detainee is suspected of violating the Protection Act, says Anna Westberg.
Säpo has been informed
The security police are informed of the case.
- But in the current situation, the case is on the police table. We work closely with the Police Authority both in these matters concerning drones and also in general, says Karin Lutz at Säpo’s press service.
The Royal Palace, Drottningholm Castle and Haga Castle are special protected objects.
It is forbidden to fly drones over the castle areas.

Depending on signage, it is prohibited to enter (hand sign) or photograph, depict or even measure (crossed over camera sign) a protected object. Protection guards (guards which protect protected objects) have rights similar to police as to fireams use (it wasn’t that long ago a Brit and a Belgian had warning rounds fired at them after attempting to enter Muskö Naval Base). And Apple’s and Google’s streetview cars have more than once been chased by MP’s.
FYI: Protected object sign looks like this, but keep in mind that all protected are not marked with those signs (old ones still are around), or at all. And some protected objects are so sensitive that protection guards may fire for effect without warning.

Signs may sometimes be from the county authority.

EDIT: Also, breaking the protection law can lead up to 2 years up river (§20 of SkyddsL (SFS 2010:305)).

I worked at a neighborhood bar in college. Did a few morning shifts. Would get there at 5:45 for a 6am opening and there would be three regulars who the janitor had let in with a drink in their hand and cash for it on the bar.

I know I probably shouldn’t say this, but:

I’m really glad that Liz Cheney is stepping up to the plate as a Republican when it comes to Trump trying to take over the country, but in the back of my mind, she’s still a Republican.

She most likely wants women thrown in jail for having abortions, election rights restricted to basically white people, and rich people to never pay taxes again. Or at the least, is willing to sit back and let it happen.

I sometimes wonder with her if she’s trying to clear the board to get that kind of evil done without the obvious crazy that Trump and the MAGAts bring to the table. LIke, “Hey, elect me President! My dad was a VP, I helped take down Trump, and I’m a woman! Ignore all of the horrible policies I tacitly endorse by dint of caucusing with the GOP!”

Screw Trump for putting me on the same team as Liz Cheney, LOL.

They just hijacked the actual meaning and content of CRT and applied it to anything related to any actual black history or any story with black characters. I knew that would happen the second it got dragged through a couple of news cycles. Now it’s anything that hurts a Nazi’s feelings. Which is pretty much anything that’s not blindingly white.

Shamelessly stolen:

calling curriculum topics “Critical Race Theory” does not make it Critical Race Theory any more than calling a description of the Bohr model of an atom “Quantum Mechanics” makes it Quantum Mechanics. Updating the narrative of U.S. history in the high schools to include a substantial discussion of racism, the origin and refinement of white privilege, and the special exploitation of Black labor is not CRT but simply a move towards accuracy and relevance, one that is a necessary but not in itself sufficient condition for overcoming systemic racism in the USA. Characterizing it as CRT misleadingly gives the impression that it is sectarian or concocted ideology of the left.

Arguing that “it’s not CRT” is pretty pointless. The correct argument is: “whether you call it CRT or whatever, it is time that history classes reflect historical reality, and recognizing the continued presence of systemic racism gives us the opportunity to improve our country and achieve its promise.”

Trump has privately told GOP lawmakers, congressional candidates, and operatives in recent months that Republicans on Capitol Hill should be prepared to launch a full-blown investigation to ‘get to the bottom of’ how FBI agents supposedly caused violence and mayhem on Jan. 6.”

“The theory that the feds somehow orchestrated or caused the rioting at the Capitol is groundless, but it has nevertheless been embraced in influential spheres of Republican politics, in Trumpland, and in right-wing media and online culture. The appeal, of course, lies in the attempt to shift obvious blame off of the 45th U.S. president and conservatives.”

Which sucks because it dilutes and minimizes the need for CRT as part of law school. I know, that’s part of the whole demonizing process. The people throwing this shit out there know this, it’s the desired effect. Rich white people’s kids who want to get a law degree are going to have to take a class that might shine a light on inequalities in our system based on race, oh noes.

I keep going back to what the right wing did to the organization ACORN, effectively destroying their voter registration and poll worker training programs and the entire organization. Using scary black people as villains to detract from what they really wanted; voter suppression. Stacey Abrams told them all to fuck off by creating Fair Fight, but we have many miles to go here. She’s taking shit right now for using around 1.5 million dollars that Fair Fight raised to help pay off medical bills for a couple thousand families. The average payoff was something like 3K per family. Wingnuts are accusing her of buying votes and diverting money illegally. Like she’s that stupid.

Dear McMinn County Board of Education,

My name is Gregory Paul Silber. I’m a Jewish-American writer, editor, and critic specializing in comics and pop culture. Like many people who I am sure have contacted you over the past few days, I am saddened, furious, and insulted to learn of your decision to ban Art Spiegelman’s Pulitzer-Prize winning graphic memoir Maus from your schools.

I was just 13 when I read Maus for the first time. I didn’t find it in school nor was it assigned reading; I simply discovered it. Regardless, I am now a 30-year-old man and can confidently tell you Maus changed my life for the better. It saddens me to think that your students will be deprived of that experience. Maus not only taught me about The Holocaust in ways that I hadn’t yet absorbed from conventional education, but about life after trauma, about the pain children inherit from their parents, and about hope.

I don’t know how much, if anything, your students have learned about the Holocaust. By the time I was their age, I had known about Hitler, the death camps, and related monstrosities for many years. I knew antisemitism has existed throughout the long history of the Jewish people, and I knew it was still out there. I’m not just talking about Neo-Nazis and other hate groups that are easy for some to brush off as irrelevant fringe groups. I had experienced antisemitism first-hand from my own peers, like the first grade classmate who told me I was going to Hell for not believing in Jesus.

Awhile ago on a FB feed a former classmate of mine revealed he was the only Jewish member of our all-white HS football team (1985 public school btw) and the coach ordered either bow down and pray to Jesus like the rest of the team at practice and before a game or not play.

He ended up quitting the team and the FB response to this story was the usual mixed bag of horror by liberals and either a shoulder shrug or applause by the former students who turned out right wing.

Observant Jews tend not to play football; because high school games are Friday night, and college games are Saturday afternoon.

I’ve commented quite a bit that Trumpite gun-humpers apparently see black people as a zombie horde that will swarm into suburbia to loot and kill “when the welfare checks stop.” Like zombies, they are expected to keep coming no matter how many are mowed down. This is why the humpers amass absurd stockpiles of firearms and ammunition.

It just recently occurred to me that this may be yet another example of rightwing projection. The antivaxxers are certainly zombie like. They are dying in car-load lots but those who remain are completely undeterred, stolidly advancing in their quest to devour all remaining brains. This happens because they have been brainwashed over the last 50 years to reject any source of information that does not comply with their agenda.

The same may be true if they resort to mass terrorism, for example, by attacking election facilities on election day or military bases in the event of hostilities with Russia. They will not be deterred by the death toll among terrorist militia, no matter how many meal-team pawns are slaughtered, because they will not believe the reports.

I still recall Newt Gingrich’s comments in 2010 about Obama’s “Kenyan, anti-colonial worldview”.

At first I read “Keynesian” and said thought “Yeah, that makes sense.”

But then I re-read it and it hit me what Newt was getting at with his remarks: Not “Kenyan” in the sense of “A former British colony that fought for and won its independence.” but rather “Armed Mau-Mau gangs going around raping and butchering white settlers.”

They are real good at redefining terms

Look at what happened with ‘fake news’. The reason they’re so good at redfining terms is because the ‘liberal’ media willingly plays stenographer for them and uses their definition for terms at face value until it becomes the accepted public definition. It’s not so much that they have particular marketing skills as it is they’ve cowed the arbiters of public perception into laundering their terms for them.

I was in the HS band and both our Head Director and Ass. Director were both Jewish. They both led us every Friday night and Saturday game rain or shine. They both however observed major Jewish holidays and were absent from school during those. I don’t know how orthodox they were in their faith but they were indeed very mainstream American Jewish.
