Just waiting for the first question asking whether Biden’s promise to nominate a black woman to the Supreme Court is “affirmative action.” Will it be Peter Doocy or one of the supposed “mainstream” reporters? What’s the difference?

Putin’s suddenly interested in appearing willing to discuss de-escalation, just as the US and NATO are showing their support for Kyiv.

The US and NATO position should be that we will not accept anything less than a return to status quo pre-Crimean invasion. Let him choke on that a bit.

Fucking hell.

I let an (unvaxxed) friend who I have not seen in a while come over for a little bit to hang out last night.

Guess who tested positive today?

Now, thankfully everyone in this house is fully vaxxed and we were outside most of the time, but still.

For the record, he was asymptomatic the entire time he was here.

Police in Saxony-Anhalt, Germany have said that a file on Radim Passer, the Bugatti Chiron owner who filmed himself going 417 km/h (259 mph) on the Autobahn, has been forwarded to prosecutors.

The police department is “looking at the possibility of a banned car race,” the U.K.’s The Sun reports. If that’s the case, Passer could be facing up to two years in prison.

Passer filmed himself driving his Chiron last summer on Germany’s famed Autobahn. A video of the run was released late last year and the driver claimed that he took every possible precaution to make the stunt as safe as possible, choosing a straight bit of road with good visibility.

There’s no official speed limit; however, if I am recalling this correctly, the law states that German police officers can ticket drivers if they feel they are driving excessively fast for conditions, or otherwise creating a dangerous situation.

There’s no posted speed limit - people regularly drive in low triple digits - But the last time I was in Germany I stayed below 85mph in my rental car - but when I did break 100 in my MR2 and later my 350Z on Interstate 5 here in California, I found deceleration from 115+ a little butt puckering. When the spoiler kicks in the car sucks down closer to the road and is really squirly.

I remember being up in the loaders hatch of an M-60A3 (air watch with a M3 “grease gun” SMG) as we drove in convoy down the Autobahn at ~ 25 mpg (40 kmph) while the civilians would, illegally, pass in and out of our column at over 90mph (150+ KMPH). This was during both REFORGER 83 & 84. I was glad not to be driving!

Cyber attack on German Oiltanking shuts down tank terminal, Dutch Shell also affected

Oiltanking, a German company belonging to the Hamburg-based Marquard & Bahls group, has been the victim of a cyberattack. In addition, the IT of the mineral oil trader Mabanaft, which belongs to the same group, is also said to have been affected. As a result, a critical infrastructure (CRITIS) has been paralyzed, as Oiltanking’s fuel loading systems are shut down. The German Shell fuel service station chain is also affected.

*snip*

Meanwhile, Spiegel Online reports here, that 13 tank farms in Germany have been affected by this cyber attack (my guess is ransomware). Loading no longer works there. Among the customers is probably the major Shell corporation, which may no longer be able to supply its gas stations.

Shell’s official statement to Handelsblatt reads, “Possible effects on our supply chains can be compensated for at the present time via alternative loading points.” There is also unlikely to be a complete loss of fuel supply in Germany, as there are 26 companies operating in this market.

I was regularly over 100 mph in my rented Ford Taurus station wagon. I was also regularly passed. The worst was getting over just in time to be behind a convoy of diesels, who I assume have some sort of speed restrictions, given the uniformity at which they drove.

I do remember one time heading back tot he airport in Frankfurt. Road was clear and I was clipping along pretty good. I check the rear view to see a Mercedes coupe flying up the road. Shot passed me at something in the range of 175 to 180 mph, crested a hill, and I never saw it again. It was nuts.

The Cannonball Run is an unsanctioned speed record for driving across the United States, typically accepted to run from New York City’s Red Ball Garage to the Portofino Hotel in Redondo Beach near Los Angeles, covering a distance of about 2,906 miles (4,677 km).[1] As of October 2021, the overall record is 25 hours 39 minutes, with an average speed of 110 miles per hour (180 km/h), driven by Arne Toman and Doug Tabbutt along with spotter Dunadel Daryoush.

ok i was a 19 yo amateur back in ‘76
clocked at 86 on the pennsylvania turnpike
i was really closer to 95 but slammed the brakes probably a second before the side of the road radar gun nailed us.
1976. nationwide 55 mph, so 30+ over the limit was a big deal
trooper would not trust me to mail in the payment.
patted me down, put me in his car and drove me to ‘the court’

it was a corrugated prefab building off the first exit we came to
i had no idea what i’m in for
there’s a small sign that said ‘clerk’ or something
so maybe it was legit and i could quiet the deliverance music in my head.

girl behind the desk said $15 fine.

then he drove me back to the car and said ‘take it easier’ or some such nonsense

This reminds me somehow of the last time an actual world speed record was set on a public road: 146mph on 12 July 1924 near Arpajon France by the insane intrepid English racer Ernest A.D. Eldridge in his Fiat Mephistopheles. Eldridge had created this infernal machine by squeezing a World War One surplus aircraft engine into a pre-war Fiat race car chassis. It had essentially stagecoach suspension and ox cart brakes (rear wheels only). Even then, the road was closed for the attempt. Perhaps surprisingly, Eldridge died of natural causes (pneumonia) in 1937. Mephistopheles itself survives to this day in the Fiat Historic Center in Turin.

Reminds me of Pittsburgh. The constant freeze-thaw cycle combined with lots of moisture ensured that the roads were rubble by early spring every year.

The trolly tracks on the city streets didn’t help because they let water into the roadbase much more quickly. Plus, trying to stop one’s car suddenly while driving partially on icy steel rails always made things more interesting.

The cobblestone roads seemed to survive the winters much more intact. Not that it felt any different driving on them than it did driving on the previously paved rubble.

I’ve been to two events - a concert and a musical - where proof of vax + mask was required. I brought two masks - one which fit a little looser and didn’t pull on the ears so much and one that was snug for moving through the crowd before/after. It helps if there are empty seats behind you to feel comfortable. Small venues I always take the back row.

According to police, Lloyd said he stopped his truck at the bottom of his neighbor’s driveway, got out of the vehicle and shot two or three times.

Lloyd then drove home and began looking over his neighbor’s property to find the deer, but instead saw a dog in an orange hunting vest and his neighbor laying on the ground, investigators say.

Police say Lloyd told them that he always tries to be safe and was worried he had shot his neighbor.

re: #43 Wendell Zurkowitz ((slave to the waffle light))

He found felt himself persecuted for being an atheist.

From last thread. Should know better than to say anything but this phrasing bugs me.

Not denying Anymouse suffered traumatic issues in his life due to malpracticing Christians. But he wasn’t ‘persecuted’ at LGF — he just wasn’t agreed with, and he wouldn’t respect others’ opinions after many requests. He posted interesting things when he wasn’t harping his grievances; it’s a lot quieter around here at nights; but I can’t say I miss the repeat performances of the Broadwater melodrama.

I appreciate the mostly civil and reasonably tolerant cranky people around here, it’s sad to see people go. Still one of the rare sane corners of the internet (thank you, Charles and the hamsters).

re: #21 Charles Johnson

One of the wildest experiences I ever had was driving on the Autobahn in a rented Mercedes, going more than 120mph - and having other cars pass me like I was standing still.

If I’m not careful, I can easily get up to 85 on the interstate in my Mazda 3. I know 120 is more by a good fraction, but I”m guessing in an excellent car with excellent tires, 120 probably is manageable. The trick would be knowing how not to die if something goes awry. I seem to recall an anecdote from Ken Purdy’s Book of Automobiles about Stirling Moss having the brake pedal literally come up through the floorboard while he was in a Formula race. He was going into the wall and somehow had the chops to maneuver the car in such a way that he went in back-end first, so that the impact would push him against the back of the seat, rather than crushing him into the steering wheel. Those guys who race at that level are insanely good. Also the anecdote about any of them being able to tell if the air pressure in any tire is off by a pound or so.

In my hunter training course I took when I was 11 to get my license (and I am 60 now) that was beaten into your head many times during the course. Know what you are shooting at, know what is behind what you are shooting at, know where everyone else in your hunting party are.

re: #43 Dangerman

ok i was a 19 yo amateur back in ‘76
clocked at 86 on the pennsylvania turnpike
i was really closer to 95 but slammed the brakes probably a second before the side of the road radar gun nailed us.
1976. nationwide 55 mph, so 30+ over the limit was a big deal
trooper would not trust me to mail in the payment.
patted me down, put me in his car and drove me to ‘the court’

it was a corrugated prefab building off the first exit we came to
i had no idea what i’m in for
there’s a small sign that said ‘clerk’ or something
so maybe it was legit and i could quiet the deliverance music in my head.

girl behind the desk said $15 fine.

then he drove me back to the car and said ‘take it easier’ or some such nonsense

that was before states discovered the joys of the moving violation. Now, it would be a 15 dollar fine, but you’d also discover the county was tacking 30 on to it, and then the state wanted 2000. And they’d want it NOW, which you would know because after you were found guilty through the bench trial, they would shuffle you over to a cashier’s window and tell you credit cards were fine, but there was a 35 dollar convenience fee. Ask me how I know.

Yup, shooting within a certain distance of an occupied building or a public roadway, and shooting across a public roadway are all, or used to be, illegal in Pa. (And Virginia, btw.) To say nothing of shooting at a person.

That said, I had a group of friends in the 1970’s in Pa, who were out bird hunting. They started to hear a shotgun fire, followed by bird shot falling around. They all started to yell at whomever was doing it to stop.

When that didn’t work and they continued to get shot at, they started shooting back. Apparently, that did work.

And I had another friend whose rural teenage cousin was shot and killed by presumed deer hunters one fall. I do not think they ever found the killers in that case.

Court TV is covering the TN Waffle House shootings from 2018. They were interviewing one of the forensics officers. The shooter had a Kimber carry pistol that failed to go into battery. The slide wouldn’t return to the proper position when a new round was loaded. The lawyer questioning her asked if this was as intended by the manufacturer. I scoffed a bit after she said “No.” and said to myself “Oh, absolutely it is.”. Some of you know what I’m talking about.

I actually had that problem with my Kimber M1911 about 20 years ago.

In my case, some genius had changed the extractor style on that model from the tried and true 100 year old design. And the old round would not fully extract. Which meant that the new round would not load and the pistol was “jammed”.

I ended up corresponding with Kimber and they traded my Kimber for one with the good extractor. The new one did work predictably.

I followed links from that essay to other Deep Shtetl postings, and came across this amazing quote from a novelist Yair interviewed:
newsletters.theatlantic.com

This question was brought home to me by my children. In our school curriculum, I think they do ancient civilizations in sixth grade. And each of my kids at some point during that year came back to me and said, “I’m super confused, because in social studies, we’re learning about all these great civilizations. We’re learning about ancient Egypt and ancient Persia and ancient Babylonia and ancient Greece and ancient Rome. And we’re learning about how these amazing civilizations built the world. But then at home, for each of those civilizations, we have a holiday about how they tried to kill us. So are these great civilizations, or are they not?”

That contrast is exactly the point. Judaism is a counterculture. Uncoolness is Judaism’s brand. We’ve never been cool, starting with being the world’s only monotheism with the bossy and unsexy invisible God. We were never cool, and it has persisted. Judaism has always been a countercultural movement.

But that recognition flips the whole idea of social studies in the humanities upside down. Because it turns out that there’s this other story, one that is actually more important and more relevant to where we are now in the modern world, and it’s still around. And I think that’s actually a story that everybody, not just Jewish students, would benefit from knowing.

If rather than “Here’s the Jews, we killed them and that’s bad,” we were taught more about “Here’s this civilization that developed as a counterpart to these other civilizations, and that often exposes their flaws,” that would really change the way that we think about Jews in a non-Jewish society.
