I just finished watching Love and the Constitution, the MSNBC documentary about Rep. Jamie Raskin losing his son to suicide and the January 6 madness and how he and his family made it through all that at the same time. And how he used his son’s suicide note as a catalyst to keep fighting against fascism. I recommend it if you can find a way to watch it.

Raskin is a good man. He’s a constitutional scholar and you can see his face light up when he talks about democracy and how amazing it is. He talks to people about the constitution and how it works, gives out copies of it, he works in his community for good. This is a guy who actually understands what governance is and what is possible with if people can work and even fight for positive change. Because it’s always a fight.

From last thread:

Re that post from GOP *bragging* that there are 40 Black candidates running in Republican primaries this season? It occurs to me that even at that small number, there’s no guarantee that all of them will win the primary, still less the General Election (though in a lot of red districts the effect is the same). And even if ALL of them do win, that’s still not a number to boast about.

From the sounds of it, somebody at the RNC ran the numbers and realized that “BIDEN IS RACIST AGAINST WHITE PEOPLE!!!” is not doing them any favors for their poll numbers. So they’re now trying to come up with a backup strategy, only they’re left recycling the same old “Look at our black friends!” talking point that parade around every election in the hope that they might finally crack that 10% ceiling.

It gets better. Burgess Owens comes to us from Utah’s 4th Congressional District. If that sounds familiar, it’s because the last time that district sent a Republican to Congress, it was Mia Love. You may remember her as “The Future of the PartyTM” until she was excommunicated from the party altogether for failing to show proper fealty to the King in Orange.

Continued complete lack of leadership in Canada.

Ottawa’s mayor has declared a state of emergency to handle the truckers who are protesting national coronavirus regulations - a 10-day occupation that has shut down the center of the Canadian capital city.

“(This) reflects the serious danger and threat to the safety and security of residents posed by the ongoing demonstrations and highlights the need for support from other jurisdictions and levels of government,” Mayor Jim Watson said in a statement, Reuters reported.

(snip)

Trudeau, who is isolating after testing positive for COVID-19 last week, has said the convoy represented a “small fringe minority” and that the government would not be intimidated.
About 90 percent of Canada’s cross-border truckers and almost 79 percent of the population has received two COVID-19 vaccine doses, Reuters reported.

Trudeau says he won’t be intimidated while in hiding, utterly incompetent.

It’s abundantly clear that the GOP has never paid attention to civics, math, science, or anything else in school. No wonder they show so much hostility to public education, and why they’re so determined to ban books and wreck public education.

They don’t want GOP kids to learn just how fucked up their parents truly are. They want their kids to be just as bigoted, know nothing, and ignorant as their parents.

“run government like a business” is one of their key points

public education (along with public health, safety and environmental protection) is seen as just another expense to be minimized in order to strengthen the “bottom line” (which in this case is minimal government spending and taxation)

re: #92 A Cranky One

I’ve designed and built countless amplifiers and speakers.

None if them contained magic wires.

In the simplest case, the voice coil of most speaker drivers is a fine guage wire wrapped around a former. The idea that cables hundreds of times bigger than the wires in the voice coil is required for the short runs between the amp and speakers is ludicrous.

Yes, you need a wire guage sufficient to handle the amperage between the amp and speakers. But as long as the speaker cables can handle the amperage and have low impedance and conductance, you are golden.

If you look inside even high priced boutique speakers, you won’t find the woo woo cable equivalents.

I’m currently running B&W Nautilus as the mains in my surround sound setup.

But a set of speakers I designed and built can easily exceed their performance.

Raven R-1 true ribbon tweeters. One of the most accurate and lowest distortion tweeters ever made. Downside is they cost $750 apiece 20 years ago. So very pricey.

SEAS 6.5 inch magnesium woofers. Very low distortion drivers. But also pricey.

Cabinets are 1 inch MDF and carefully braced to avoid resonances.

Here are the drivers.

[Embedded content]

Bottom line:

These speakers will blow away almost all others. But not an inch of magic cables inside.

Electronics repair guy here…

My €.02 worth is that when it comes to humming in computer speakers, you can have primarily have two sources, it can be due to:
a) incorrect routing of signal and power cabling.
b) ground loops;

Incorrect routing of signal and power cabling is the easiest and cheapest to deal with. The rule of thumb is to keep at least 1’ (30 cm) between power and signal cables, and if they have to cross each other, do so at right angles (90°). The higher current the power cable is carrying, the stronger the magnetic field around it, and the greater the risk for interference. For longer runs and higher power levels, increase spacing to at least 1’ 4” (40 cm).

Ground loops are dealt with by designing how you ground the shield of the signal wiring best. It’s a dark art in and of itself, and I suspect I’m not that good at explaining, but basically it’s caused by voltages induced on grounds between devices.
First step is to try to have to everything dealing with the signal on the same breaker in the fuse cabinet, or at breakers least the same side (or same phase in a 3-phase environment) of the panel.
Second step is to check out what is connected to that side or that breaker, i.e. things known to dirty the ground, e.g. computers (desktops and lappies alike). A classic in areas which have unpolarized mains connectors is to flip the connector 180°. Sometimes that resolves or mitigates the problem.
Third step is to simply break the ground loop. It can be done with a ground loop isolator
(e.g. amazon.com ) or by using optical routing between devices (i.e. if device you want signal from has a opto out and the amp has an opto in, utilize it).
Following steps are advanced course, but they include better shielding of power and signal wires (but you need the requisite background to do it right), ferrite blocks to put on cabling.

Let’s face it. Let’s call it what it is. Jan. 6 was a riot that was incited by Donald Trump in an effort to intimidate Mike Pence and the Congress into doing exactly what he said in his own words last week: Overturn the election,” Christie said on ABC’s This Week

51
Teukka  Feb 7, 2022 • 5:40:20am

re: #48 Teukka

Addendum: As to speaker cable, the same rules apply as to power cables, i.e. keep power density reasonable (I would go with the lower end of the 4 to 6 A/mm² range), connect ends well (I swear by shoelace ferrules), avoid long runs if you can.
Current density is calculated by taking the current (which can be calculated by taking the output power of one channel of the amp and divide it by the speaker impedance of one channel, and taking the square root of that) and dividing it by the area in mm² (square millimeters (SIC(!))). You could go with what is common in the electricians world, 5-6 A/mm² but I believe one should add a little margin because the skin effect can become more pronounced for power audio signals, so 4 A/mm². And I would prefer multi-stranded wiring over solid-core.

This is Christie trying to reclaim the obnoxious conservative “straight shooter” mantle that Trump stole from him. Words cannot express how much I hated having this guy run NJ for eight years.

Still laugh at the people who voted for him twice (TWICE) and were then like “Oh, he’s a vindictive prick who was willing to fuck over a tiny town because they didn’t kiss his ass? Shocked! Shocked, I tells youse!”

I hear all sorts of idiotic reasons why people voted for him twice, but my sister is a teacher and he relentlessly tried to destroy her ability to earn a decent wage by fucking over teachers’ unions.

If you can live with that, more power to you, I guess.

Actually no. Screw you. You knew he’d do that and voted for him anyway. Not a stretch of the imagination that NJ people will go “Yeah, I voted for him twice and outside of Hurricane Sandy a few other things, he was an asshole, but maybe if we elect him President, he’ll change.”

They saw Trump as their means to the End Times. They thought Trump would fuck things up so completely that it would usher in the Apocalypse. Their support was cynical and entirely about fulfilling prophesized end of the world stuff. Trump was their guy because he’d ruin everything he touched. The GOP was down with this because democracy stands in the way with unilaterally ruining everything.

She was about 10 feet away from the end of the bridge when she fell some six stories through a gap in the road and died, West Palm Beach police spokesman Mike Jachles said.

He noted that there was a bridge tender who is responsible for following safety protocols in managing the bridge.

An investigation is now underway into the woman’s death and why the bridge was raised with a pedestrian still on it. nbcnews.com

And in true conservative manner, are now trying to blame a Liberal Federal Government for their inaction and failure.

Oh Amazon.

I get 2 bales of kleenex auto delivered every month (because of my allergies, I use a lot of kleenex). So, Amazon said, sorry, no kleenex for you this month, so when I ordered groceries from the two stores I pick up groceries from every weekend, I ordered 3 bales of kleenex from each store. Both said they had “low inventory” which usually means I order 3 of something and get either 1 or, more times, nothing at all.

Welp, I got all 3 bales from both the grocery stores and then Amazon delivered both of the original order that they told me they did not have. I now have enough kleenex to supply the entire city. I would say I am sitting on about 60 boxes of kleenex.

The husband is…let’s just say…unhappy.

Ask the Mayor or Ford. Like I said above, those two supported this. Otherwise they would have never allowed them to stockpile fuel and food for a prolonged occupation of the City center The RCMP should have been sent in by “Premier” Ford once it became apparent these ass clown were in it for the long haul and the Ottawa Police Services were not being used to their full potential to quash this at the start. The only reason they are trying to do anything at all now, is this fiasco got out of hand and is making them look bad.

Bannon wants the 4th Turning to take place. He weaseled his way in to being Trump’s primary advisor for that reason. Trump and his rich cronies feel isolated from any societal fall so are fine with it.

Former White House press secretary Stephanie Grisham told the House Select Committee investigating the Capitol riots that Donald Trump was enjoying watching the riot so much on television that he rewound the video several times to watch it over again, the AP reports.

Grisham said Trump told his staff to “look at all of the people fighting for me” but he was apparently “confused” about why staffers weren’t as excited as him while watching the violence unfold.

“There are members of the Republican Party probably who have been there for 30 years that are scared to death of the mob excluding them that they won’t even speak up. The RNC deserves every aspect of backlash that is going to come down on it ,and this is a defining moment in American politics and in the RNC’s future.”

Your Monday Surreal Horror fix:

From YT Description:

Yes, lot’s of violence and surrealism, but still an amazing experience! Salvador Dali would have loved it for sure. The original Mangaka is Chiyomi Hashiguchi, the creater of “Nekojiru Udon” (the official anime series of Nyako and Nyatta), but she committed suicide on May 1998. For me, it shows openly the cruelty of the selfishness in the aspect of division in race (cats/pigs; Japanese in japan/Chinese and Koreans in japan etc).

The official description of the movie is: Cat Soup (ねこぢる草 Nekojiru-sō, lit. Nekojiru Grass) is an experimental 2001 Japanese anime film directed by Tatsuo Satō, inspired by the work of manga artist Nekojiru. The surreal follows Nyatta, an anthropomorphic kitten, on his travel to the land of the dead and back in an effort to save his sister’s soul.

They had some BBC news stuff this morning about Macron going to Moscow to talk to Putin. And they had some feedback on the Russian viewpoint of that mission and the Ukraine situation.

The language choice alone by the Russian representative spoke volumes about how apart things really are and what the Russian viewpoint/propaganda is regarding the Ukraine. The term “succession to NATO” was used multiple times and that is making it pretty straightforward that Russia considers Ukraine its property.

Christie is a vindictive bully but I have no doubt that he would have handled the pandemic with competence; he would never have dismantled the pandemic team assembled under Obama.

Don’t see why anyone would care. Tarantino has yet to make a decent movie. Even that isn’t just violence porn. Bleah.

I’ve seen them all now, because for some reason I’d never gotten around to Jackie Brown until very recently. They’re all damned good. Once Upon a Time in Hollywood is one of the best movies of the last 5 years. He doesn’t play it safe by constantly trying to recreate whatever Hollywood has determined is a profitable formula.

This Amir Locke murder-by-cop case is really pissing me off. Not just the NRA being completely silent, but the fact that the judge who signed off on the no-knock warrant will suffer no consequences whatsoever. Nor will the commanding officers. And the cop, if even found guilty and sentenced to prison, will probably get out on good behavior just like Jason Van Dyke.

Men are From Mars…
and other books of its ilk were spot on about one thing that also applies to almost all relationships - work ones too

we speak different languages, men/women, work ranks, castes, regions…
we use words differently
what you’re saying is not what i’m hearing and interpreting

in junior high we read “Six Characters in Search of an Author”
this quote hit me like a ton of bricks (impressionable, absorbing, angsty teen) and i carried it in my wallet forever, till i stopped carrying a wallet:

But don’t you see that the whole trouble lies here. In words, words. Each one of us has within him a whole world of things, each man of us his own special world. And how can we ever come to an understanding if I put in the words I utter the sense and value of things as I see them; while you who listen to me must inevitably translate them according to the conception of things each one of you has within himself. We think we understand each other, but we never really do

that’s when i learned to slow down, listen, try and figure the angles - if something ‘else’ was going on - and then either be careful how i answered, ask for more info, or for self preservation, not to engage at all.

“run government like a business” is one of their key points

public education (along with public health, safety and environmental protection) is seen as just another expense to be minimized in order to strengthen the “bottom line” (which in this case is minimal government spending and taxation)

Return to normal. Moving to endemic phase, where we’re willing to accept a death toll for what should be essentially entirely preventable because an insane number of people refuse to mask/vaccinate to save themselves and others during a deadly pandemic.

It’s a bit over a week old and from the New York Pest but I found this article about a Kyiv woman buying a sniper rifle in case of Russian invasion interesting. Putin has united Ukraine like no one else could.

Ukrainian mom buys powerful hunting rifle, vows to ‘fight for Kiev’

A Ukrainian mother-of-three has armed herself with a powerful hunting rifle, vowing to “fight for Kiev” amid fears of a Russian invasion.
“As a mother I do not want my children to inherit Ukraine’s problems, or have these threats passed on to them. It is better that I deal with this now,” Mariana Zhaglo, 52, told the Times of London in her Kiev kitchen, where she posed with the high-caliber weapon.
Zhaglo, a marketing researcher, spent the equivalent of $1,300 on the Zbroyar Z-15 carbine, which she learned how to use by attending a two-week sniper’s course.
“I have never hunted in my life. I bought this carbine after listening to some soldiers discussing the best rifle to get,” Zhaglo, who affixed a silencer, telescopic sight and bipod affixed to the gun, told the outlet.
The armed mom, a member of Ukraine’s Territorial Defense Forces, also shelled out more than $1,100 on a helmet, snow camouflage, flak jacket, ammo pouches, boots and a British army surplus uniform.
