Stunning New Version of “When the Levee Breaks” Feat. John Paul Jones | Playing for Change | Song Around the World

“When The Levee Breaks” is a powerful, thought-provoking and emotionally-charged classic by Led Zeppelin, from their Led Zeppelin IV album. The song is a rework of the 1929 original release by Kansas Joe Mccoy and Memphis Minnie about the Great Mississippi Flood of 1927; the most destructive river flooding in U.S. history.

“It seems that little has changed since 1927, or even 2005 with Katrina. It’s still a really powerful track, both musically and lyrically.”- John Paul Jones

Legendary multi-instrumentalist, John Paul Jones, is accompanied by Stephen Perkins of Jane’s Addiction, Susan Tedeschi, Derek Trucks and over 20 musicians and dancers from seven different countries, in this Song Around The World version featured in Peace Through Music: A Global Event for the Environment.

Feel the impact of these compelling lyrics and let the music move your spirit!

“When The Levee Breaks” was written by John Bonham, John Paul Jones, Kansas Joe Mccoy, Memphis Minnie, Jimmy Page and Robert Plant

This Song Around The World was produced by Sebastian Robertson and Mark Johnson

Playing For Change (PFC) is a Certified B Corp (Social Purpose Organization) created to inspire and connect the world through music, born from the shared belief that music has the power to break down boundaries and overcome distances between people. The primary focus of PFC is to record and film musicians performing in their natural environments and combine their talents and cultural power in innovative videos called Songs Around The World. Creating these videos motivated PFC to form the Playing For Change Band—a tangible, traveling representation of its mission, featuring musicians met along their journey; and establish the Playing For Change Foundation—a separate 501(c)3 nonprofit organization dedicated to supporting music programs for children around the world. Through these efforts, Playing For Change aims to create hope and inspiration for the future of our planet. To learn more, visit playingforchange.com

The more I learn about the history of Led Zeppelin, the more I get the impression that Page and Plant somehow resented that JPJ was their equal and then some.

A book every American should read about the year the levees broke:

Personally, I wouldn’t waste a minute on it, but I’m sure that Sen. Cruz has an extensive library of public statements about the police use of “violence” against “peaceful protestors” - and I’m guessing they’re unlikely to be along the lines of his considerate concern for the poor victimized Canadians….

One sign you know the book banners haven’t read the books they imagine are CRT is they haven’t caught up to all the books on the flood of 1927.

That appeared to work for Trump in 2016. Though I would not hold that as what would normally be a successful pattern. Though the nuts seem to have latched onto it since it fits their preferred behavior pattern.

Back from the CostCo run. It was crazy busy in there. The busiest that I have seen it since the early pandemic panic. Just before everything shut down.

Went there to pick up some bottled water and kitty litter. And since everybody was showing off breakfast pron, I had a hankering for some muffins and danish.

re: #9 jaunte

Black citizens who climbed onto the levee in Mississippi to escape the 1927 floodwaters were re-enslaved as a labor force to build the levees higher.

From the first time they got the vote until the 1927 Mississippi flood, black voters were monolithically Republican. “Party of Lincoln Yo!”

But in 1927, President Coolidge sent his Secretary of Commerce, Herbert Hoover, to coordinate the federal efforts with state and city efforts to save New Orleans and parts of the agricultural land immediately north of the city from the oncoming flood (it was a slow-moving flood, they had weeks of warning from upriver).

Blowing the levees in the middle of the night, with no warning, in spots where black shantytowns would be washed away and people drowned, then re-enslaving the men on top of the levees (while leaving the women, children and seniors with no supplies to fend for themselves)… that was all Hoover’s idea.

And this is why black voters have been overwhelmingly Democrat ever since. Even through Jim Crow. It took until Eisenhower for the R’s to start to win back some of the black vote… but Goldwater fucked that up.

…no, I take it back. They WERE absolutely orgasmic when they saw these kinds of tactics used against BLM and anti-war protests. It wasn’t fascism to them then, apparently.

Actually, not in my state (California, e.g. first in the country in population, 49th in covid deaths) — and as to the country, Biden has done a pretty effective job of skating through the mire (e.g. infrastructure legislation). Congress has managed to push forward with insurrection investigations and other business, and the Senate, though they can’t pass legislation because mired by repug intransigence, have done well with judicial and other nominees.

“…Employees said bonuses were tied to how much “net new money” they brought in.

“The bank incentivizes a banker to look the other way with an account they know to be toxic,” said a former senior manager in private banking. “If you close a toxic account, especially a large account in excess of $20 million, the banker finds himself in a deep hole. A deep hole that is almost impossible to get out of.”

This has led to a culture, Credit Suisse employees say, where there are two sets of rules for two sets of clients: the rich and the ultra rich.

“Due diligence of customers and accounts — say at a level of $1 million — are very thorough,” said a former senior executive. “But when it comes to high net-worth accounts, bosses encourage everyone to look the other way and managers get intimidated about their bonuses and job security.”

In addition, very big accounts are kept so secret that only a few senior executives might know who owns them.

“When someone wants to engage in money laundering after he loots assets of the country, for example, he needs to transfer the money. So holders of big accounts go directly to the very senior managers,” he said.

The system was based on plausible deniability, said former employees. Bankers are given strict rules, but the incentives are to ignore them.

Yeah, I read that crap piece from Ezra Klein, too: I mean, it wasn’t totally crap; he made a number of cogent points: but AFAICT, the only thing it proves is “mired in dysfunction” is the political reporting from this country’s “mainstream” media. We know that it’s the editors who title these things, but the Pavlovian “Bad News For Joe Biden” reflex that seems to kick in in virtually any and all reportage in national/international affairs is really getting stale….

ETA: My bad!! I was commenting on an Opinion piece by Ezra in today’s NYTimes: I see that’s not(?) the linked article in #2. My opinion still holds, though

Yeah: the 1927 floods helped to add immensely to Hoover’s reputation (not that Coolidge cared, he supposedly never liked Hoover much) helping to cement him as the Republican nominee in 1928.
It’s only been relatively recently that it has been acknowledged that the aid efforts for the affected region had been carefully crafted to insure that only white folks got even the least benefit. A situation which was studiously ignored at the time, and for many decades afterwards.

I bet Yellen and the Treasury Department have been digging to see where Russia, Putin, and his friends have money or assets in the USA and Europe. And probably looking at what transactions those accounts have been making in recent times as well.

A sudden and sharp hit to the wallet will get the oligarchs’ attention that perhaps letting Putin invade Ukraine with the Russian army is not a positive development to their interests.

Well, that route looks that it will be I-40 if they use interstate. And if I was doing 300-400 miles a day of driving (the distance I-40 covers to cross New Mexico is 375 miles) I’d prefer interstate driving as compared to trying to use the state and secondary routes.

Accept overloads. Haul 65,000 for an added bonus. Run roads to dodge scales that are borderline illegal.
