I have never understood how actual history can freak people the fuck out the way it does. As a kid it never made me “ashamed to be white”, never once. What it did make me feel was sadness that people could enslave other people and be just fine with it. Or kill each other in huge numbers in wars, or just do terrible things to each other in the name of something.I always worried more about what this did to the victims and hoped we could figure out ways to do better, to find ways to eradicate fear and hate. As I got older, I wanted to actually learn more about history. Because I was taught actual American History, even if there were tons of holes in it, but I wasn’t lied to beyond what was obviously purposely omitted. Things were not overly glossed over, my teachers tried to get the classes to understand some pretty horrible shit happened. It was pretty easy to fill in the gaps because of libraries and librarians. I don’t feel bad or guilty for being an old white lady or hate myself for being white. But I do hate that there are always just enough ridiculously white asshole Nazis lying in wait to fuck shit up. I’m sick of this shit. I’m also ramble-y lately.

Because it’s not that they’re ashamed of what happened in the past. They’re afraid people will recognize what they’re going to do in the future.

I guess that’s most of it. I just wonder if there is ever going to be a way to get humans to lose the hate somehow. Minimize the fuck out of it at least. Hate and fear are what makes it easy to commit atrocities, so how do we attack those things and minimize them? It’s not one thing it’s a bunch of things I think, but in the meantime, how do you fight back and stop this without doing even more damage?

Large groups of humans are needed to make change work, and that means communities have to be strong enough to stomp down hate and remain compassionate at the same time. I’m not extremely optimistic that we can do this. At least in the US. I’m not sure about other places.

With help from machine learning software, computer scientists may have unmasked the identity of Q, the founder of the QAnon movement. In a sprawling report published on Saturday, The New York Times shared the findings of two independent teams of forensic linguists who claim they’ve identified Paul Furber, a South African software developer who was one of the first to draw attention to the conspiracy theory, as the original writer behind Q. They say Arizona congressional candidate Ron Watkins also wrote under the pseudonym, first by collaborating with Furber and then later taking over the account when it eventually moved to post on his father’s 8chan message board.

QAnon founder may have been identified thanks to machine learning (Engaget)

The US is a major experiment. There aren’t many countries with quite as large minority groups as the US. It was noted, when Obama was elected, that we were the largest country to elect a minority citizen as president. A lot of other countries either haven’t had to deal with it or did it in ways that we hope they remain in history books.

As to whether or not we can truly fix that, I’m not sure. It’s far too easy for people to grow up with resentment. My brother thinks he’s owed a lot, even though my sister and I don’t feel that way; this difference being, obviously, that I didn’t have to grow up with me as my brother.

Looks like Russian forces are staying in Belarus, ostensibly to continue “training exercises”:

Belarus and Russia decided to continue a joint check of the reaction forces due to the escalation in the Donbass, the Belarusian Defense Ministry reported on February 20.

According to Belarusian Defense Minister Viktor Khrenin, this decision was made by Alexander Lukashenko and Russian President Vladimir Putin “in connection with the increase in military activity near the external borders of the Union State and the aggravation of the situation in the Donbass.”

Because history is not taught objectively, it is taught ideologically and judgmentally. It is taught not to relate what happened but to explain why America is the Greatest Nation on Earth and why we are God’s Chosen People.

Though I’m no fan of monarchism, I do hope she’ll be OK….

The Queen has tested positive for Covid, Buckingham Palace has said.

The palace said the monarch is experiencing “mild cold-like symptoms” but expects to continue “light duties” at Windsor over the coming week.

“She will continue to receive medical attention and will follow all the appropriate guidelines,” the palace said in a statement.

That being said, I’m sure Queenie has access to the finest healthcare on the planet.

I started to watch the movie “10” last night after not seeing it for many, many years.
I was completely caught off guard when I was reminded of the age of Dudley Moore’s character.
Still enjoyed the movie though. An added bonus in this viewing was the nostalgia for the old decor, cars, and behaviors.

Passenger exited moving vehicle before being struck, killed on I-27

According to LPD, 32-year-old Brandon Brock, a passenger in the backseat of a pickup truck, rolled down the window and climbed out of the moving vehicle. He was then struck by a portion of the vehicle.

The driver called 911 to report the incident. Brock was pronounced deceased on the scene.

Most likely outcome? TFG will end up losing control of those courses due to his upcoming legal problems, no other golf courses will step up because Khashoggi and the whole thing will crash and burn just like his failed football league.

Ok, my brother is a conservative guy and he watches Fox News, but he’s not stupid. He told me how he was in CVS the other day, where, after he paid for one of mom’s prescriptions, he’d scored a $5 off coupon per package of disposable underwear. So he took advantage of that and was standing in line to pay, you know, ripping the CVS coupons apart while standing in line, as one does, when this woman comes in. She is unmasked (yes my brother still wears a mask) and is SCREAMING about how she needs test kits NOOOOOOWWWWW. Just raising hell. It turns out Screaming Lady tested positive for COVID and she needed to check to make sure that she was negative. While at the same time SCREAMING her head off in the CVS, making sure that her (probably still infected) spew was spreading all over the place. Which was my brother’s way of warning me that gee, he might have been exposed, despite masking up. Fuck!

I was just writing this up. But you got there “fustest with the mostest”.

Yup, it gives the Russians the ability to land an armored brigade behind Ukrainian main battle lines between the Russian Border and Russian occupied Crimea.

There had been a debate whether Russia would do that or the riskier operation of landing west of Crimea and seizing the Ukrainian Black Sea Coastline, linking up with Russian occupied Moldova.

Yes, that is the intelligence that Biden was referring to on Friday. And US commanders say that the Russian Army is working the same way that the US Army would, if given the “Go” order.

Interestingly, on Friday Ret Gen Barry McCaffrey and Ret Gen Mark Hertling both said that they were surprised that the Russian Army would go ahead with what they saw as such poor odds for success.

A full scale invasion doesn’t make much sense. If he thinks he can get away with it like he did when he attacked Georgia and Crimea, it seems like the move to make would be a limited incursion into the separatist regions, while denying that it is happening. But of course I can’t know what is going on inside Putin’s head.

Just a reminder that everything Trump touches, dies/fails. The Saudis are footing the bill for this and TFG is just looking to cash in for his golf courses.

Most likely outcome? TFG will end up losing control of those courses due to his upcoming legal problems, no other golf courses will step up because Khashoggi and the whole thing will crash and burn just like his failed football league.

Just my $0.02.

It will be interesting to see how a winner of the tournaments there behave on the winner’s podium. I bet we don’t hear any “I would like to thank my Lord and Saviour Jesus Christ” as is the seemingly required incantation like here in the US. We’ll see if money money money Trumps Jesus Jesus Jesus.

Perhaps a limited incursion to bridge the area between Russian-occupied Crimea and the LPR and the DPR, then position enough Russian military presence in those areas to force Ukraine to accept a fait accompli and partition, or else face a full-scale invasion of the rest of the country.

If Putin sends Russian troops into areas where there isn’t a separatist presence already, it makes it harder for him to deny that they are there, and increases the likelihood of severe western sanctions. If everyone can pretend a Russian attack may not actually be happening, it makes it easier for pro-Russian Western politicians to push back against sanctions.

Was never much for specialty coffee’s. My cold brew mix is 50% medium roast Colombian and 50% medium French Roast (store brand is fine) soaked for 24 hrs (12 minimum) and then drained. That’ll last me about 2 weeks.

A partition of Ukraine along the line of the Dnieper River - he gets that pro-Russian part of the country, a part of Ukraine that is heavily industrialized to boot. The loss of the Donetsk Basin would be a major blow to Ukraine’s economy.

Putin seems to know when to stop (at least currently), which sets him apart from a certain German dictator with a funny little mustache, with whom Putin is often compared.

William Shirer once remarked that if Hitler had stopped after the fall of France in 1940, he likely would’ve been remembered as perhaps the greatest German conqueror of all time. But of course, he didn’t (or couldn’t) stop….and the rest is history, as they say.

Alternative scenarios allowing Germany to win WWII usually depend on Hitler and the Nazis not being Nazis. He was always going to attack the Soviet Union sooner or later, and it pretty much had to be sooner when (he thought) the Soviets were still weak enough to defeat.

Of course; I mean, Hitler made that pretty damn clear in Mein Kampf, the classic German Drang nach Osten, which really wasn’t anything new or revolutionary in German nationalist sentiment. Though by all accounts, Stalin was genuinely taken by surprise when the Germans attacked in 1941.

Maybe no one in the USSR thought to come up with a Russian translation? I mean, while Mein Kampf isn’t some detailed itinerary of “I’mma conquer these folks over there” or a who’s who of Hitler’s shit list, it does give a rather general outlook into his (highly disordered) thinking. My dad once darkly quipped, “There’s only one politician in my lifetime who kept all his campaign promises, and that was Adolf Hitler. And that ended up starting one helluva mess.”
