This is so hard to watch. A possible pyrrhic victory at best for Russia. And poor shattered Ukraine. Fighting like a tiger, but the jungle is being strip-mined. The unprecedented immediate video of needless civilian deaths from drones and whatever is just hard on the soul. But we get to watch from afar. All we suffer is certain things getting even more expensive.

6 college athletes, coach among 9 killed in fiery crash

Nine people were killed in a crash Tuesday night when a van carrying members of a New Mexico university’s golf team crashed head-on with a pickup truck. It happened just after 8 p.m. Tuesday evening about nine miles from Andrews.

The van was carrying nine members of the University of the Southwest’s men’s and women’s golf teams.

A Dodge 2500 pickup was traveling southbound on FM 1788. A Ford Transit passenger van registered to the University of the Southwest in Hobbs, NM was traveling northbound on FM 1788. For unknown reasons, the Dodge pickup drove into the northbound lane and struck the Ford passenger van head-on. Both vehicles caught fire and burned.

She’s the one who routinely undermines state policy whenever the governor leaves the state and she is temporarily in power. Governor Little is more in line with not terrific but not horrendous GOP governors but she seems worse than DeathSantis.

It would be nice if BBB and voting rights got this treatment, but I don’t see most of them having the attention span and discipline for this. They would have needed to start operating this way on Jan 21, 2021 as well.

If people are truly concerned about the tyranny of the majority, they can have equal numbers of Senators from all states and no filibuster, or proportionate Senate representation and a filibuster. One or the other, but both creates a tyranny of the minority.

Interesting article at the BBC:

Ukraine: Putin will search for a way to save face

Even the worst war comes to an end. Sometimes, as in 1945, the only outcome is a fight to the death. Mostly, though, wars end in a deal which doesn’t satisfy anyone entirely, but at least brings the bloodshed to an end.

And often, even after the worst and most bitter conflicts, the two sides gradually resume their old, less hostile relationship.

If we’re lucky, we’re beginning to see the start of this process happening now between Russia and Ukraine.

The resentment, particularly on the Ukrainian side, will last for decades. But both sides want and need peace: Ukraine, because its towns and cities have taken a terrible battering, and Russia, because it has already, according to the Ukrainian president, sacrificed more men and material than it lost in its two shockingly violent wars in Chechnya - although that is impossible to verify.

But no-one willingly signs a peace agreement which is likely to lead to their own downfall.

We’re not quite at “Hitler ordering phantom brigades into hopeless maneuvers” territory yet, but with 65-75% (depending on who you ask) of his total forces committed to this fight and demands that client states start providing warm bodies, the idea that Russia has any chance of doing better than fighting to a stalemate is laughable. That they think they’ve got any leverage to scare the West into giving them what they want is sheer lunacy.

If only that could be captured on video for posterity.

Off-topic, but that performance by the late Bruno Ganz was one of the greatest ever put to film.

(Despite all the parody re-subtitlings.)

That movie contained one of the great gems of German humor ever: namely the scene when the Justice of the Peace makes his way through the shelling to the Bunker to marry Adolf and Eva and states: “I am required by law to ask the following question: Are you both of pure Aryan descent?”

It occurred to me that perhaps what Putin is doing - consciously or not - is creating a Dolchstoßlegende narrative. That Russia is losing not owing to incompetent or poor military/political leadership, but rather, because it’s being “stabbed in the back” on the homefront.

Yesterday, Russia quit the Council of Europe, which means that they’re now free to reinstate the death penalty if they so choose; couple that with Putin’s talk of “cleansing” Russian society, and I see some dark days ahead for Russia.

Guess we’ll see if those alleged FSB leaks are real. Leak #5 basically said that Putin is planning to declare that the West has declared war against Russia via economic sanctions, then he’ll activate Russia’s nuclear triad and issue a 24 hour ultimatum to drop sanctions “or else”.

Those Russian government special air wing flights headed east are an unusual development.

The thing about dictators is they love to delude themselves, to live in fantasy worlds of their own making. And one of the fantasies they’re frequently given to indulge in is that they are wildly popular with the common man on the street, so if there is civil unrest and opposition to their rule, then it must either be the work of outside sources. Yes, they often blame “foreign agents,” but many also see such times as an opportunity to weed out those they view as “disloyal” or scheming behind their backs. We only need ask Herr Goering what can happen when rumor gets around to the boss that you’re negotiating a separate peace with the enemy.

I think this message was really aimed at the oligarchs who are Vlad’s power base, the ones who have been the target of sanctions and who have been squealing like stuck pigs as chunks of their empires are frozen or outright seized. Not only have they become pariahs, but so have their families and their close friends. They have few places they can run to to escape the shitstorm brewing at home and a rapidly diminishing list of reasons to continue supporting the current regime. And I think Vlad is looking at all this and his paranoia has him convinced that these same people are now trying to inflame unrest at home in order to have an excuse to bring him down.

Idaho’s proposed six-week abortion ban modelled on Texas SB-8, deputising Stasi-like reporting and lawsuits on anyone who “aids or abets” a woman seeking an abortion.

In response, FFRF is calling on people to write Gov. Brad Little to tell him they will boycott Idaho potatoes in an effort to damage the Idaho economy if they continue with a religion-inspired vigilante law.

Nebraska has reported its first case of highly pathogenic avian flu in domesticated birds.

The Nebraska Department of Agriculture said Wednesday that the disease was found in a backyard flock in Merrick County.

“Unfortunately, Nebraska has joined a long list of states currently dealing with highly pathogenic avian influenza,” said Nebraska Department of Agriculture Director Steve Wellman.

He said state officials are working closely with the U.S. Department of Agriculture to ensure proper protocols are being followed to help control spread of the disease.

Rep. Jeff Fortenberry (R-NE1, Lincoln) went on trial yesterday in California, the first sitting congressman in twenty-one years to go on trial.

He is accused of taking campaign contributions from a Nigerian billionaire.

The indictment seems likely to have tanked the nine-term representative’s chance of reëlection.

NE-1 includes a large portion of rural area around Lincoln, along with the very liberal parts of the city.

In anticipation of Fortenberry being convicted, the state GOP has distanced themselves from his campaign, and numerous other Republicans have jumped in for the May 10 primary.

The Democrats are behind state Sen. Patty Pansing-Brooks, so the Nebraska Democratic Party is already concentrating on general election messaging.

Rep. Fortenberry is accused of accepting a $30,000 cash contribution from the Nigerian, not reporting the campaign contribution, then lying to the FBI twice about it. Fortenberry, his lawyer, and his campaign manager all accuse the FBI of running a politically-motivated liberal witch hunt. They also accuse the FBI of entrapment.

He denies all charges. His trial is expected to last four days.

England has the case of a man “hanged over a comma” and Russia has the case of a man beheaded over a full stop.

A fellow was to be executed and pleaded to the Czar for mercy. The response came without punctuation:

казнить нельзя помиловать
(káznit’ nel’zyá pomílovat’)

With a full stop after the second word, it reads “Execution forbidden. Pardon”
But they read it with a full stop after the first word: “Execute. Forbidden to pardon”

Nebraska Family Alliance (NFA) is a statewide religious 501(c)(3) education, research, and policy organization based in Lincoln, Nebraska. It advocates for traditional gender roles and family structures, biblical marriage, and conservative Christian views on public policy.

NFA’s policy efforts include: advocating for homeschool families, school choice laws, and parental rights in education, establishing abortion regulations and restrictions, strengthening laws against human trafficking, and permitting businesses to operate according to the owner’s “religious beliefs.”

The organization also opposes expanded gambling, conversion therapy bans, LGBT employment protections, same-sex marriage, and same-sex adoptions.

Supporters of the organization characterize its activities as strengthening families, defending religious liberty, advancing a culture of life, and protecting traditional family values. Critics view it as discriminatory, calling it “the lobbying organization that turns Nebraskan conservative Christian fear into law.”

The company is set to use an agency to keep their ferries running and current staff will be able to apply to the agency for work.

The move comes ahead of an expected announcement today, Thursday 17 March.

P&O Ferries suspended all services earlier.

The RMT union has warned of ‘growing speculation’ that P&O may be planning to reduce the number of staff it has.

It is calling for the Secretary of State to ‘intervene’ and protect seafarers.

Rail, Maritime and Transport union (RMT) general secretary Mick Lynch said there is “growing speculation that the company are today planning to sack hundreds of UK seafarers and replace them with foreign labour”.

He added: “We have instructed our members to remain onboard and are demanding our members across P&O’s UK operations are protected, and that the Secretary of State intervenes to save UK seafarers from the dole queue.”

Ukrainian troops got a crash course in modern guerrilla warfare from the Central Intelligence Agency following Russia’s 2014 invasion of Crimea — training that US officials believe is helping Ukraine hold off the Kremlin now.

CIA paramilitary officers with the Special Activities Division began secretly training Ukrainian forces in sniping, anti-tank warfare and surveillance evasion shortly after the 2014 incursion, Yahoo News reported Wednesday.

Half a dozen former intelligence officials told the outlet that they see hallmarks of their training in the ongoing Ukrainian resistance.

“I think we’re seeing a big impact from snipers,” one former intelligence official told Yahoo. “Especially as Russian forces get bogged down from lack of supplies, I think the training really paid off.”

“We tried to really focus on operational planning, then really hard military skills like long-range marksmanship,” another former CIA official said. “Not just the capacity to do it, but to know how to do it on a battlefield, to really deplete the leadership on the other side.”

The paramilitaries were pulled out of Ukraine last month as tensions with Russia grew, another former official said, noting there were no agency paramilitaries on the ground when Russia invaded at the end of February.

From Naked Capitalism:

Yves here. John Helmer makes a bombshell revelation in his latest post, that Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky participated in an in-person summit on March 15, not as widely touted in Ukraine, but in Poland. It is virtually certain that given the difficulty of assuring safe passage that Zelensky has not returned to Kiev.

This allegation matters because it vitiates the effort to depict Zelensky as the second coming of Winston Churchill, heroically holed up in his capital as bombs are falling. Zelensky staying, or appearing to stay, in Kiev, is also a rallying point for the sure-to-lose-but-still fighting Ukrainian army and the civilians who still unrealistically hope that Ukraine can win on the battlefield.

Admittedly, Helmer relies significantly on the debunking of visual evidence….which has not proven difficult to do with a lot of Ukrainian propaganda. Helmer was a master well before the war, having made the downing of MH-17 a pet project (he not only finely parsed photographs, but made careful readings of inconsistent and shifting claims of experts and prosecutors).

One might point out that showing that the official visual narrative of the meeting is faked does not necessarily prove that Zelensky was not in Kiev. Helmer presents other evidence that supports his contention, including reports from sources in Poland. What I found was compelling was that it was utterly implausible that the Polish, Czech, and Slovenian leaders made a long, overland trek to Kiev, as official accounts claimed. That would be disastrously risky in the absences of Russian assurances of safe passage, which were never made. That then begs the question of what actually happened.

Lambert added,

I hate this Bellingcat-style analysis because absent a very trusted source, there’s no getting to the bottom of what’s photoshopped and what isn’t.

That said, Helmer is trusted, things like railway stations and “Presidential seating style” can be independently checked, and the argument about railways seems dispositive. (I’m also persuaded by the military haircuts on the so-called reporters.)

Helmer’s article is here.

That’s largely it, Russia is running out of time and while it might be making some gains in the South, the cost of doing so is absolutely horrendous for their military and their economy.

Russia has virtually no large serial arms manufacturing capacity at this point. They cannot simply churn out T-34’s by the thousands anymore. And if reports are true about Putin’s military being degraded to 90% or below in just a few short weeks of fighting a much weaker foe they have altogether another thing coming by trying to fight the US. It can be easily imagined Russia would have virtually no conventional organized military left inside a month and only 10-20% of major assets remaining.

Taoiseach (Irish PM) Micheál Martin has tested positive for Covid-19 on the eve of the St Patrick’s Day celebrations in the White House.

He was informed of the positive test while attending the Ireland Fund dinner in Washington.

At the time he was sitting alongside House of Representatives Speaker Nancy Pelosi and other guests.

The taoiseach had been due to receive an international leadership award at the event.

However, when the moment arrived Irish Ambassador to the US, Dan Mulhall, took to the stage and confirmed the positive test.

He said Mr Martin had tested negative but then was re-tested after a member of his delegation received a positive result.

He said the taoiseach had re-tested out of an “abundance of caution” and added that he was in “good form” but very disappointed.

Heh

It’s an Irish hello.

This Thursday, March 17, St. Patrick’s Day will mark the first holiday in two years that Gothamites will be able to celebrate without COVID restrictions. NYC dropped mask and vaccine mandates on March 7, with Mayor Adams declaring that the city was “back.”

Now, revelers are primed to raise an unapologetic pint of green beer and toast to the city’s return.

“I’m excited to pick up the St. Patricks day plans I left behind March 13, 2020,” Maggie McNeil, 24, a Murray Hill resident and associate at Price Waterhouse Coopers, told The Post.

Aine McGirr, 26, and Sean Magee, 27, flew from Ireland to celebrate their homeland’s beloved holiday. McGirr told The Post they are expecting “to be a bit nuts.”

Danny Andrade, who is based in Queens, is equally enthused: “Green vomit all the way!!!!” he hyped on Facebook.

And Fundamentalist sects view even each other with suspicion if not equal to Atheists just like they do with “Mary-worshipping” Catholics.

There is a reason I left home the day after I graduated HS… actually lots of reasons but this religious lunacy of my youth was a big reason.

Is Medvedev still alive? He was the guy who Putin chose to ‘lead’ while he got the constitution changed to allow him to be president forever. I think any attempt to overthrow Putin will be made out of a desire to protect Russia from irrevocable collapse and beg forgiveness from the rest of Europe.

That kind of reversal of policy would trigger an economic boom in Russia and Ukraine.

When my son (the one who was interviewed on CNN) lived in Moscow, he was in charge of fundraising for the “Detskii Dom” (orphanage). American tourists were always asking how they could adopt a Jewish kid from Russia.

His answer: they are not true orphans, most have at least one parent or close relative, but their families can’t care for them for various reasons, mostly because of extreme poverty or coming from a war zone (Ossetia at that time). The best to do for them is not to take them away from their loved ones but to make sure they can receive an education, nourishing food, warm clothes and also treatment for trauma that many of these children have experienced. The Chabad children’s shelters are considered “luxury homes” compared to other Russian orphanages (which are shitholes straight out of Dickens novel) and there are long waiting lists to get in.

I mentioned this a few days ago — my pet theory is that he didn’t invade earlier because of COVID; he had to wait until it finished sweeping through his military. But by then, news of the arrests had made national headlines and the “Cartersville 70″ went viral on social media. Not only was the work of law enforcement questioned, but also the suspected racial bias: Of the 65 adults arrested, 50 were Black.

The other 15 were hanging out with black people, and we know how racist white people feel about that.

re: #165 Captain Magic

From Naked Capitalism:

Helmer’s article is here.

Isn’t Naked Capitalism a pro-Russia site? There were accusations back in 2016 that it was funneling Russian propaganda. From an article in January this year:

…..
Russian aggression in Europe is a fraud. The aggressor is the US which has ringed Russia with missiles and bases. That is the inverted reality of the relentless US/UK propaganda ‘news’. Read this and know your true enemy.
……
Is Russia Threatening Ukraine?

The notion that Russia is massing troops with an intent of attack doesn’t hold up to scrutiny. First, Russia not unreasonably has servicemembers near its borders. Those who want to depict Russia as a a belligerent are throwing in units not stationed close enough to be part of a strike force. Moreover, while it’s hard to get good numbers, any increase has not been huge (on the order of 100,000 soldiers) and took place early in 2021, contrary to claims of aggressive increases in October and November. On top of that, Russia has not put in place the logistical support needed for combat, such as medical teams. By contrast, the first sign the US was serious about invading Iraq was that it started pre-positioning hospital ships nine months before the attack.

They mean it will cost tax payers $900k.

Good. Keep electing spineless city councils or county commissions which either will not get rid of bad cops, or worse support them, then the voters should pay.

Make sure any time a governmental entity floats an unrestricted bond, you always vote “no” (unrestricted bonds can be used to pay police settlements or fines).

When voters get tired of their taxes going up to pay for constitutional violations by the police, they will get rid of the asshat politicians.

Kentucky General assembly looking to divert taxpayer money from public schools to charter schools. If they do pass that law, it could run afoul of the Kentucky Constitution’s guarantee of an “efficient system of public schools.”

Charter schools are efficient, at funnelling tax money to both school-privatising capitalists and religious organisations.

Texas Republicans tried to pass that and the rural areas screamed, because the school system is the largest employer in a lot of those places.

Nebraska Republicans keep trying to pass it and rural Nebraska (especially the Panhandle and north-central) howl because no one would even build a charter or religious school here.

Such a bill would be the death of our public schools with no replacements. All our schools receive insufficient funding from property taxes (so there is an “equalisation law” which takes money from rich districts to fund poor or low-population districts—attempts to repeal the equalisation law are also shouted down when they come up).

My dog is exactly like that with her “nature” shows. She looks at me, then at the TV, then jumps on her spot right in front of the TV and looks at me again. If I am in the chair and pick up the remote, she shoots over to her spot in front of the TV. And she follows the animals.

When she first started watching TV (and I mean watching, not just looking at it…she follows the animals as they move across the screen), when they would run off screen, she would tear up the stairs looking for them.

That dog of mine is wicked smart.
