A war within a war has emerged in Ukraine. More than a month after the Russian army invaded on the order of President Vladimir Putin, more and more Russian nationals are fighting alongside Ukrainians.

The combatants, who appear to number in at least the hundreds, describe Putin as the enemy, even as they take up arms against their countrymen. They range from captured Russian soldiers to political dissidents like the 30-year-old Russian who asked to be called Yan, an IT worker who now spends his days scouting, identifying potential artillery targets and bringing medical supplies to Ukrainian soldiers on the front.

“No Russian should have crossed the border with a weapon in his hand,” Yan tells TIME from a district near the Ukrainian capital, Kyiv, where he has served in the country’s territorial defense forces since the war started at the end of February. “I am here to oppose Russian aggression and also defend Ukraine.” He produced a valid Russian passport but requested the pseudonym out of fear for the safety of his family in Russia. He said he moved to Kyiv from Russia’s Ural mountains three years ago, fearful of imprisonment after his office was raided. A self-described anarchist, Yan had taken part in demonstrations against Putin’s rule.

Evidently with a covid-19 shutdown, the supply chain for food has gone pear-shaped. Residents are in lockdown, and grocery delivery is not able to keep up. My son tested positive for covid yesterday, so had to be picked up to be taken somewhere for quarantine. Stay tuned.

This far into the pandemic, everyone but the poorest people should have some cheap bulk food like rice stocked to get through any shutdown. All it takes is a nasty variant to completely shut down food distribution.

The active duty Russian Army has had a personnel shortage because of the Ukraine War and its massive casualties. It was a question on how Russia was going to solve this.

This may be the answer.

The next question is how long before the called up reserves will be combat ready versus when they will be sent into combat. Combat Ready would likely be months. Sent into combat?

Stay tuned.

(And 60,000 is likely not going to be enough in a war of this scale.)

good grief

According to a report from WAVY, the chairman of the Virginia Hampton GOP has called for the ousting of the electoral board chair over an ugly tirade on Facebook where he used a racial slur to describe Defense Secretary Lloyd Austin and retired Gen. Russell Honoré — both of whom are Black.

snip

In his tirade, Dietrich wrote, “The situation with the United States military is getting more disgusting and dangerous by the day.”

After listing off the names of the two Black military men, he added, “These so-called ‘leaders’ are so vile and racist, there’s no way to describe them other than in terms their own people understand. They are nothing more than dirty, stinking n*ggers.”

He added, “We are being forced into a corner by these enemies of the People. If it is a civil war they want, they will get it in spades. “Perhaps the best way to pull us back from the brink is a good public lynching.”

I originally got the J&J COVID vaccine (it was the first available and I got it shortly after it was made available).

Got a Pfizer booster in October.

Today, I got a Moderna booster.

Feeling a little more protected, since the mask mandates have been removed in this area and most folks have stopped wearing masks. I’ll continue to mask and take precautions but am going to be more willing to leave the house. Mrs Cranky has been struggling with cabin fever, so I’m hoping this will help her.

Places like Florida are swinging to the reich right and it is important to know why.

We can say there is a history of racism and that is true but that can’t explain the changes towards the know-nothing right.

Some of the appeal of the likes of DeSantis is simply down to age.

Sad truth: as we age we lose the ability to make sound choices.

Places like Florida are swinging to the reich right and it is important to know why.

Florida is also still a Southern state, full of Northerners who might have come there as liberals but have turned reactionary.

And it is corrupt as all holy fuck.

But it’s a dry heat. RH is only 9%, but that is up from 7% a couple of hours ago.

I’ll trade you. It’s 40F with snow in the forecast in Chicagoland, and I could really use some heat and sunshine.

I am still unclear on this; has there been any reputable source that has seen and examined this laptop? The whole provenance surrounding it is sketchy and unbelievable. Did Hunter admit he left a laptop at that repair shop?

I’m also unclear, but I’ve read that some asshole has a hard drive that they claim is from the laptop, but it’s obviously not something that any serious person would care about since a hard drive in the hands of some asshole is not evidence. If they were serious, law enforcement would have the entire laptop.

Is the “he” Rudy Giuliani?
Because even in his his current debased state, Rudy! ought to know the rules of evidence well enough to know that “Hunter’s laptop” - and any supposed “data” linked to it has a credibility value somewhere between zero and minus infinity .
That (as far as I am aware), no law-enforcement has EVER done any sort of serious investigation of the supposed circumstances of “Hunter Biden”’s” supposed computer to me, speaks volumes.
But then,to RWNJ media, credibility is very much a variable commodity (and quite optional to their reportage).

Crush White Nationalism  Apr 8, 2022 • 2:31:45pm

Lock them all up.

On paper, InfoWars parent company Free Speech Systems seems to lose money every year. Yet Jones has allegedly transferred significant amounts out of the company—financial transactions that often coincide with legal setbacks Jones has faced in the Sandy Hook cases. After the families sued him in 2018, for example, Jones allegedly started personally withdrawing a total of $18 million from the Free Speech Systems bank account over three years, along with drawing an annual $600,000 salary.

Many of the suspicious transfers center on a mysterious company called PQPR, which the plaintiffs claim is controlled by Jones and his family members. Shortly after Jones lost his last appeal to block the defamation cases in Texas, PQPR claimed that Free Speech Systems owed it $54 million—almost all of InfoWars’ assets.

Free Speech Systems began transferring its money to PQPR, then onto a series of shell corporations controlled by other Jones family members, according to the motion. While the payments were ostensibly made to pay off the hefty $54 million in arrears—a debt PQPR hadn’t bothered to enforce in the seven years during which InfoWars racked up the tens of millions in supposed debt—the plaintiffs say this was just a scheme to shelter InfoWars assets in an “alphabet soup of shell entities.”

“They’re transfers designed to siphon off [Jones’] assets to make them judgment-proof,” the lawyers allege.

It would really fucking help if the mainstream media would close ranks vs. Republican liars, and treat everything said by Republicans with the same level of skepticism reserved for official Soviet government announcements during the Cold War.

Instead we get the “I can’t even” ethics shit where it looks like some in journalism are seriously saying it would be unethical to oppose a mortal threat to their profession (and to democracy) because that would be “picking a side”.
