Is that a padded cell she is speaking from?

Krazy Kandiss got just 3.4% of the vote in the GOP primary. She did not fail, though, since that was still 41,176 votes, which is a very large, and therefore lucrative, pool of marks for her grift. She’ll be traveling around fund raising in goober churches and motel meeting rooms from now on.

If they want to see the real deal, they’ll have to go to Poenari Castle in Romania. That particular castle, mostly a ruin today, was a home of Vlad III (Vlad Țepeș, the real-life inspiration for Dracula).

By the time Bram Stoker got around to publishing his novel in 1897, Poenari Castle had been abandoned for almost three hundred years.

ah yes. Vlad the Impaler, right? famous for literally impaling alive various Turkish soldiers. Then again, it was a small country, at war constantly with an Empire. I’ll bet the publicity generated from impaling Turks went a long way towards dampening recruitment enthusiasm for the enemy.

The very same - the one and only Vlad the Impaler. And by all accounts, his particular sadism wasn’t just levelled at Turks. It was aimed at anyone who he felt deserved it. Though many of the legends about his cruelty are almost certainly exaggerated, by any metric, he’d be considered an outright war criminal by modern standards, including crimes against humanity and genocide.

The former Romanian defense minister, Ioan Mircea Pașcu, asserted that Vlad III would have been sentenced to death for his crimes if he’d been put on trial at Nuremberg. Vlad III would rank right up there with some of the worst monsters of the Third Reich.

Nice to wake up and see Mr. Towner performing.

I discovered him - I thought it was in high school but the album “Blue Sun” came out in 1983 according to WIKI so I was in the Army then - when I found that record at the public library and made a tape copy that I loved to listen to. There was a error in the first song, the title track, on my recording and I got so used to the skip I thought it was part of the song till I bought a copy of the album on MP3 not that long ago :)

You can find the title track here:

Then there was Elizabeth Bathory…..

A lot of the stories about her, like bathing in the blood of virgins, came about decades after her death. That being said, she was a sadistic serial killer who took pleasure in torturing her victims and watching them suffer. Though she’s been attributed to have had over 600 victims, it’s generally agreed in the actual historic record that she killed about 80 servant girls, through dismemberment, being slowly boiled alive or, to mix things up, by having them staked out on the grounds of her castle keep during winter and pouring water over them until they died of hypothermia.

She was placed under house arrest in Csejte Castle until her death at the age of 54 as punishment for her atrocities.

I’ve never had the chance to go there and see it for myself; I’ll have to do that one of these days.

I have been to Csejte Castle, which is in Slovakia, near the village of Čachtice. My ex and I were driving by and I saw the ruins of the castle and decided to go take a look. Once my ex realized exactly what castle this was, she flatly refused to go walk around the ruins, saying, “You go walk around by yourself. This place is cursed and I’m not stepping foot in there.” She was superstitious and because she, like a good many others, believe that Bathory’s body is buried somewhere up there in the ruins (most likely under the ruins of the castle church), I think it just gave her the heebie-jeebies.

Like Dracula, Bathory has her own horror film genre. I once ran into one that followed the arguable case that she was largely the victim of her own power—she and her dead husband held a massive chunk of royal debt.

So, when I saw the BSOD on my new computer, I contacted the sellers, who agreed to send me USB stick to repair it. After some back and forth, I received it — and discovered that BitLocker is enabled, so I can’t just reinstall. So I asked how I should proceed and they said send us the computer. Not gonna happen — except as a last resort.

So I turned to youtube and watched a couple of videos on what to do next. (I can actually understand why they might not want to send instructions on command line programs — just send it to us and we’ll take care of it), but my earliest experience is with dos and a bit of unix.)

Now I have the videos and my written transcript of them, and I’m going in. Wish me luck.

Bathory (1560-1614) was pretty recent for an inspiration of horror folklore but there is plenty of it nevertheless. Unlike Dracula, she lived during the age of printing, after Europeans learned of the Americas, and after the Protestant Reformation (she was officially a Calvinist). Much of her life is well documented. She was a contemporary of Shakespeare and Elizabeth I. Her real life, and the case against her, are well documented but there is a huge amount of embellishment added on top of that real history.

Bit locker is one of the biggest evils modern MS operating systems foist on people. Unless there is utterly irreplaceable data on the machine that’s a requirement for fdisk, format & reinstall.

Do I remember correctly that one of the “best” suspects for Jack the Ripper was some royal cousin?

‘Sacrifice people, including Jews.’ Carolina Forest littered with antisemitic propaganda.

Plastic bags with rice and antisemitic messages were found on Carolina Forest area lawns Thursday and Friday morning.

This is not the first instance of antisemitic notes being found in Horry County. On May 5, 2022, Horry County PD wrote in a Facebook post that “HCPD is aware of an anti-Jewish note that is being circulated nationwide, which cites conspiracy theories related to Jewish government officials and COVID-19.

2008: O’Hare Airport: Going into the Neon Colon

United Airlines did (does?) this thing where to thin the herd in their overbooked flights they do up to three gate changes involving two or more terminals. Run like hell or you won’t make it.
Yeah I bumped that old lady’s elbow one time while dashing by on the moving sidewalk, but she was in the left lane standing there with thumb so far up ass I thought she was sticking out a tongue

I made it! Now looking around the new terminal and I see a Newsweek magazine about the most dysfunctional middle school in America-aka my alma mater

No place to sit, & too much angst and anger to effectively people watch, so wait to board plane and then wait in a line of 44 planes to get back to beloved So Cal. And this is a good trip.

Yeah, I hate O’Hare why do you ask?

My 18yo came back from visiting relatives overseas—first time in ten years!—and missed his connecting flight at O’Hare because customs was just one long line and it took an hour and change to get through only to face this mess. My wife faces the same in a week. Fortunately, my sister lives in the north of Chicago and is happy to give them shelter. Glad you got through.

I’m honestly not sure at all that it’s a good idea for the January 6 committee to be putting so much emphasis on Republicans like Cheney and Kinzinger, letting them do most of the questioning. If it’s an attempt to seem more credible I wonder if it would seem even more credible if leading Democrats were leading the charge with righteous anger, instead of deferring to Republicans who everybody knows are getting slammed by other Republicans and seem weak as a result.

Maybe this will turn out to be the best way, but I don’t have a really good feeling about it. I prefer things to be more direct and clear, and a big part of what happened on January 6 was the actual complicity in the coup attempt of most of the Republican Party. I’d rather confront the Republican Party, not reach across the aisle. Not for something this serious.

This is the message on the Georgia Guidestones that were destroyed. They’re meant to guide people after an apocalypse. The rest are cool, though “harmony with the infinite” sounds like the drugs talking to me.

Maintain humanity under 500,000,000 in perpetual balance with nature.
Guide reproduction wisely — improving fitness and diversity.
Unite humanity with a living new language.

Protect people and nations with fair laws and just courts.
Let all nations rule internally resolving external disputes in a world court.
Avoid petty laws and useless officials.

Worst case, you open the case to see whose WiFi controller is in the system or on the motherboard.

They may believe that the people they need to convince are Republicans, breaking support like what happened to Nixon, rather than swinging the blowing in the wind people into working with Democrats to clean up this mess despite the resistance from most Republicans. I don’t know which is the best approach, but some Republicans do seem to be waking up, and some Republicans involved in the coup have been agreeing to testify after seeing the hearings.

The sad part is that MS-DOS was seen originally as a simplified version of what was then MS Xenix which was intended to be the step up, multiuser, networked OS to replace MS-DOS. If they had stayed with that, rather than first haring after OS/2 and later coming up with Windows out of jealousy of IBM, we would have had a decent Unix based system by the mid 80’s.

Instead, they sold it off to SCO. :(

Had they stuck with OS/2 and developed that, it would have been ok. Had they let Dave Cutler make NT into the VMS clone it was supposed to be, that would have been fine. But that wasn’t to be, alas.
