HELLO, CINCINNATI AND HAMILTON COUNTY!!!

Free tampons and pads are now available at all county administrative buildings.

Hamilton County spent $25,000 to install 74 dispensers for free menstrual products in 11 county-owned buildings. The bathrooms are publicly accessible, said county spokeswoman Bridget Doherty.

The Hamilton County Commission on Women & Girls recommended the county install the dispensers. The commissioners approved the measure in April “to make meaningful strides towards addressing gender inequity and period poverty in the region,” according to a release from the county.

The county hopes to set an example for private businesses to offer free menstrual products, said Mary Maune, project coordinator for the Commission on Women & Girls.

“Before we ask other businesses in Hamilton County to also offer free period products, we in Hamilton County want to take the lead on this,” Maune said.

Hamilton County commissioners will make a formal announcement of the program on Thursday at the Todd B. Portune Center for County Government, where nine of the dispensers have been installed.

I was on my way to the grocery store this evening and I violated the law to grab this picture with my cellphone while stopped at a light. Mitchell, obviously, is the GOP candidate and Julie McGunnigle is the Democratic candidate. As I was driving home, I saw the same sign for Mitchell but it was flanked on both side an “Owned by Police Unions” sign and a “Prosecutes Abortion” sign. I wish I could have grabbed that picture but I saw the signs while making a left turn, so no dice. Apparently abortion is really on the ballot this time around.

ETA: Just noticed that the smaller sign is printed on both sides and has “Prosecutes Abortion” on the back. Nice work, whoever put up those signs!

re: #7 I Would Prefer Not To

I think the thing that should never be forgotten is that capitalism and white supremacy created the conditions which make the modern, tender Social Media White Folk so angsty.

White supremacy declared that the white canon—a pick and mix of documents from many distinct European cultures, sanded of their distinctiveness and pitched into the aspic of mediocrity that is “white”—was inherently superior and representative of the universal positive of literature, and pointed forced everyone, everywhere, to not just read these stories but build them into their culture, their trope-language. This hegemonic force succeeded: the texts they put out into the world became actually universal…in no small part because whiteness isn’t a ethnic or cultural group with any coherent worldview or qualia, so the texts never actually presented a coherent “whiteness” to outsiders.

On the other hand, people are complaining about use of intellectual property while just not understanding that property is property: they can do with it what they fucking want. If you want to argue that Tolkien, or Disney’s Little Mermaid, shouldn’t be “ruined” by new adaptations then your complains should be filed against capitalism itself. Because…god help us…the new Disney is being driven by the same hunt to increase shareholder value as the old Disney; they’re making choices based on market analytics not any genuine sentiment. You don’t like what’s coming out, go yell at the entire abstract concept of maximum return on investment, not some young actor that sings well enough to be Ariel.

At this point the shocker isn’t that the anti-woke people are racists, it’s that they’re so stupid they can’t identify the perpetrator of their woe. They’re so petty and desperate to punch down that their worldview means they can’t understand the world they made, they have to invent an entire occult other world with hackneyed mustachioed villains. It’s the stupid/cruel singularity, the point where the sadism requires ignorance to keep going.

Another fucking book. When the President is insane, you need to shout it out at the time.

President Donald Trump in January 2018 offered to give the occupied West Bank to Jordan’s King Abdullah II, saying he would give him a “great deal,” according to a forthcoming book, “The Divider: Trump in the White House 2017-2021,” which was obtained by The Washington Post.

The occupied West Bank was not Trump’s to give away. The US government does not have the authority to offer the occupied West Bank to another person, country, or entity. The territory is at the heart of the one of the most contentious, enduring, and complicated disputes in the world — the Israel-Palestine conflict.

Abdullah II told an American friend that when Trump made the offer, “I thought I was having a heart attack,” according to the book, written by Peter Baker, chief White House correspondent for The New York Times, and Susan Glasser, staff writer for The New Yorker.

Trump offered the West Bank to Jordan’s king, according to a new book. The territory was not his to give away. (BI)

LOL the story about Zedushka being mistaken for GRRM is going around Crown Heights now. People said they were bringing their copies of GOT for him to autograph.

He started wearing a Greek fisherman cap 30 years ago while attending classes at University of Michigan. He thought it would be less intimidating than the Orthodox black fedora, even though the fisherman cap is what Tevye wears in “Fiddler on the Roof” because they couldn’t afford $450 Borsalinos in the shtetl.

He wore a fedora to this evening’s party because as Grandfather of the Bride he was expected to observe the dress code.

Anyway here is me with our granddaughter, the new bride, at her engagement celebration.

Political Wire:

Mark Meadows Complied with Subpoena
“Former White House chief of staff Mark Meadows has complied with a subpoena from the Justice Department’s investigation into events surrounding January 6, 2021, making him the highest-ranking Trump official known to have responded to a subpoena in the federal investigation,” CNN reports.

“Meadows turned over the same materials he provided to the House select committee investigating the US Capitol attack, one source said, meeting the obligations of the Justice Department subpoena, which has not been previously reported.”

So there WAS news from CNN about Meadows cooperating. It was just with DOJ, and the same materials as the Jan6 committee.

President Joe Biden said Thursday a tentative railway labor agreement has been reached, averting a potentially devastating strike before the pivotal midterm elections.

He said the tentative deal “will keep our critical rail system working and avoid disruption of our economy.”

The Democratic president believes unions built the middle class, but he also knew a rail worker strike could have badly damaged the nation’s economy. That left him in the awkward position of espousing the virtues of unionization in Detroit, a stalwart of the labor movement, while members of his administration went all-out to keep talks going in Washington between the railroads and unionized workers in hopes of averting a shutdown.

But after a long night, the talks succeeded and Biden announced Thursday that the parties had reached a tentative agreement to avoid a shutdown that would go to union members for a vote. He hailed the deal in a statement for avoiding a shutdown and as a win for all sides.

Feeling delightful this morning with a temp of 52. Highs will be creeping back up to the upper 80s by next week - but no bad humidity outbreak.

A side effect of 6.6 inches of rain in a week - ants. Not terrible - but some of those little, pesky ones have made their way into the back of the house. We’ve had this happen a few years ago after monsoonal rains. Got the exterminator coming in Friday morning to set up the barriers and get rid of them. Have a great day/evening everyone!

It appears that ChuckTres has made redundant his own staff now that he’s moving into his mother’s digs.

And not unreasonably the soon-to-be-laid-off workers are upset.

Apparently they thought the former-Prince was going to keep them on as loyal servants.

Oh, and apparently the good people of Sussex want to strip Harry of his title (which includes said geography.)

I do wonder how this anachronistic institution is going to fare as the years of the 21st century go by.

I think they will be fine, though they will continue to be tabloid fodder. The King actually plays a useful role, as having a ceremonial head of state separate from the head of government helps prevent instability in democracies. One could argue that the role shouldn’t belong to one family in perpetuity, as it could result in a particularly unsuitable person becoming monarch just because of their birth order, though the Brits have had fairly decent ones since Edward VIII abdicated, and William should fill the role appropriately for decades when his time comes. I would humbly suggest having a term limited monarch elected every ten years or so from the House of Lords in closed session.

Exactly. “Biden’s a bumbling hypocrite who doesn’t know what he’s saying” is a much less “awkward” position than, just for instance, “was Biden’s speech asserting the importance of unions, right before he stepped in to help negotiate the rail workers’ contract, a message to the railroads that he wasn’t going to send the troops to break a possible strike so they’d better bargain in good faith?”

97
Shropshire Slasher  Sep 15, 2022 • 5:46:03am

Damn, I look forward to my union negotiations!

President Joe Biden said on Thursday that a ‘tentative’ deal has been reached between US freight rail companies and unions, averting a potentially devastating strike before the pivotal midterm elections.

The agreement, hashed out as a national rail strike loomed at midnight on Friday, will raise rail employees salaries 24 percent from the period from 2020 to 2024, with workers getting an average lump sum payment of $11,000 for the backdated portion of the raise, according to a group representing rail companies.

Another fucking book. When the President is insane, you need to shout it out at the time.

Trump offered the West Bank to Jordan’s king, according to a new book. The territory was not his to give away. (BI)

Jordan already has a peace deal with Israel. They signed a treaty. Jordan didn’t want the West Bank, because the Palestinians, particularly the PLO, tried ending Jordan’s King Hussein’s regime during Black September uprising in 1970. Don’t think his son would forget that detail. No way he wants the West Bank.

Trump was a saboteur and incapable of comprehending basic facts or history.

Indoor mask wearing is below 50% here. My focus in mask-wearing was not bringing COVID home to my unvaxed husband. Neither of us ever had COVID, so that worked. I think I’ll keep it up at least til I find an Omicron vax.

The Twitter headline seems to imply that they were being flown to Boston for paperwork purposes. Now, on paper, the migrants got on the planes willingly, but is there any room for “false pretenses” as a cause for action here? Because it seems clear that at least some of these people boarded a plane, expecting to receive paperwork and assistance filling out said paperwork so that they could get settled in the United States, and were instead dumped in the middle of fucking nowhere with no help to be found.

I think any “cause for action” regarding the Vineyard “refugees” is going to depend on their status at time of arrival in FL (?). If they are in fact “illegal immigrants”, would their rights not, de facto be somewhat limited?
However, if they were “asylum seekers” or some other category -and it seems that way, assuming they were expecting to “fill out paperwork” - do they still have any rights (under current law) as to *where* they can be “settled”?

While automakers such as General Motors, Volkswagen
and others vowed to invest billions of dollars in recent years to develop all-electric vehicles that don’t require gas-powered engines like the Prius, Toyota lagged, only more recently announcing similar investments. It also continues to invest in a portfolio of “electrified” vehicles - ranging from traditional hybrids like the Prius to its recently launched, yet underwhelming, bZ4X electric crossover.

Florida politics is littered with hate groups, accused Capitol rioters, and far-right extremists. Although many operate in public, or have been outed in recent years, beneath the surface even more malevolent beliefs and ideology can fester.

The Daily Dot recently discovered that one of the companies the state authorizes to provide campaigns and political action committees (PACs) with campaign finance software is owned by an open and avowed white supremacist who still praises the Confederacy.

Stephen Clay McGehee owns Adjutant Workshop, one of eight companies the Florida Division of Elections approves to provide this service. Adjutant Workshop’s software enables campaigns to electronically file contribution and expenditure records. Its website claims its software, called Campaign ToolBox, “has been the most widely-used political campaign finance reporting software in Florida since 1996.”

A representative from the Florida Division of Elections told the Daily Dot that the process to get approved as a vendor of campaign finance software is largely administrative.

To become a vendor, a company requests approval from the Department of State in writing.

“Once the vendor has complied with the requirements for the test, the reports will be reviewed to determine eligibility,” Mark Ard, director of external affairs with the Florida Department of State said via email on Tuesday.

Any company can get approved in Florida so long as its software can perform the required tasks. It’s up to campaigns and PACs to vet their software providers.

The man behind Florida’s most widely used campaign finance software is a pro-Confederacy white supremacist (DailyDot)

BTW, another Administration BFD that I’m wondering is going to get back-burnered in the media is the announcement of a tentative deal avoiding a nationwide freight-rail strike ( which would also have affected a big portion of passenger service as well).
I did notice, however, that both the NYT and WaPo front-paged it, so maybe not.

Just another case of Governmental Competence in action: G*d knows how this would have gone down under Trump (he would have probably gone full Grover Cleveland and called out the National Guard), but fortunately we have sane people in charge now.

Labor stuff usually doesn’t make headlines, but a rail strike as envisioned before the agreement would have proved devastating to the economy- and in election season, too.

Our time with pet is too short, but it is a fulfilling relationship.

I generally wake up very early—5 is on the late side—to make coffee and feed and walk the dog. Then I often lie back down on my side to scroll a bit. The dog always jumps on the bed and expertly curls up so we’re bum to bum. Or else, when she’s in for the long haul, stretches out so that her back is in contact with my back. It’s magical and usually not long before I fall back asleep.

I think of my inlaws who don’t have smart phones. They are going downtown St Pete over the weekend and they will be parking in a lot somewhere. They don’t have a parking app or even firm confidence in using one of the machines.

I have always been the one to introduce my parents to some of this technology, always, like since the 80s (I was the one that read the camcorder manual). No, Donald, no it hasn’t and no it isn’t. People who lose elections historically have done exactly one thing: LOSE. There might be some legal challenges, but at the end of the day, they let the votes be counted, they respected the results, they went the fuck away like YOU promised us YOU would do. The few cases of alternate electors either: 1) spawned an entire Supreme Court case that ended with legislation we now call the Electoral Count Act, or 2) were due to a screw-up due to a recount and an extremely close vote, and the state did what it could to mitigate the mistake.

It’s not illegal to lie to the press. But there can be real consequences lying to the courts. His current lawyers want to be careful that they don’t file anything that they believe is false. But what if their filing said that Trump told them the information was all declassified? So not their opinion, but Trump’s statement. IANAL — would they be in trouble personally for making that assertion? Or would they have to include an affidavit from Trump containing that statement? And are they trying to protect their client from the legal ramifications by avoiding anything they believe is perjury?

If Donald Trump runs for president again, he said that he would not pick Nikki Haley, his United Nations ambassador, as a running mate because she had a “complexion problem,” the New York Times reports.

Said McCarthy: “I’ll bring it forward. I have it.”

Back in the day before I retired and before the pandemic, if I had had the same symptoms as my COVID symptoms, I would have gone to the office infecting everyone because that’s what people did, even though we had paid time off. It was a mark of loyalty and perseverance not to make use of your sick time!

Before being hired there, I was well aware of the company’s reputation. It was generally the professionals and managers that followed that dictum, not the support staff, the salaried employees, not the hourly workers. People working weekends, putting in 70 - 80 hours — well before the modern world where every employee has a cell phone and can be contacted all hours of the day or night.

There are large swaths of society that don’t have the basic technical skills needed to fully participate in society today.

I think of my inlaws who don’t have smart phones. They are going downtown St Pete over the weekend and they will be parking in a lot somewhere. They don’t have a parking app or even firm confidence in using one of the machines.

We like to tease them about it but it must feel really isolating after a while.

Mrs J refused a smartphone until a friend where she worked showed her how to follow her facebook pals on one. Now she is panic stricken when she can’t find where she left it.

Invading the Capitol building as part of an insurrection to overturn the legitimate results of an election — that was definitely something we had never seen before. The full efforts orchestrated by Federalist Society goons to interfere with the process of transfer of power — that was new too.

Quoted in total via political wire

Trump’s allies and aides have been left angry and a bit shaken this week over the Department of Justice’s issuance of some 40 subpoenas targeting people in Trump’s inner orbit over their efforts to overturn the results of the 2020 presidential election and their connections to events on Jan. 6. Cell phones were confiscated from at least four people. A few trusted text chains among Trump vets were ignited with speculation about shoes soon to drop, while others went quiet.”

Gone, for most in Trump World, was the bravado that this probe too would pass and that the 45th president would emerge stronger. Instead, there was growing anxiety about what could be next, as well as fears that those in the inner circle may flip on their friends to save themselves.”

“There is speculation that the scope of those targeted is much larger, with some close to Trump suggesting that the number of subpoenas issued is between 50 and 75. There is, in addition, growing fear that the very people who are being tasked to help deflect some of the legal heat that Trump is under for a variety of investigations — chief among them, his handling of classified material at his home in Mar-a-Lago — could potentially be in legal trouble themselves.”

Or I could just bold it all
