Colbert: We Predicted Every Insane, Criminal Step Down Nutball Treason Highway to January 6th

We all saw the whole horrible mess unfolding in real time. Trump did all his crimes right out in front of the world, daring anyone to stop him.

Let’s take a look back at the lead up to January 6th, and humbly remind ourselves what we were totally right about all along. #Colbert #Comedy #Monologue

Philip Bump: “All of the checks our culture has on misinformation work too slowly to be effective. Mark Twain’s well-worn adage about lies traveling halfway around the world was born in an era where getting halfway around the world took a few days. Now everything is faster, burrows deeper, spreads more widely than Twain could have imagined. But our processes for containing or counteracting false information haven’t changed much at all. It’s fighting the coronavirus with leeches.”

“It has been a particularly bad summer for some of the worst purveyors of misinformation polluting American politics

Sen. Marco Rubio (R-FL) is co-sponsoring a bill that would ban abortions nationwide after 15 weeks, “throwing support behind a measure that both aligns with his longstanding desire to restrict access to abortion and risks complicating his reelection bid less than two months before Election Day,” the Miami Herald reports.

They’ll start falling in line fast

And this was just one freakin day ago:

We could have put the bastard away years ago over conflicts of interest, obstruction of justice and violations of the Emoluments Clause, but there was no political will nor were our journalists willing to do their job, ignore his unfounded assertions & ramblings, and report on what was really going on.

It should be up to each state to decide whether to apply the death penalty or just life imprisonment for abortion providers and their patients, and whether it is 20-to-life or just 20 years for aiding and abetting.

He’s just following his leader.

A federal judge in Washington, D.C., found it “mystifying” that Oath Keepers leader Stewart Rhodes would make a last-ditch request for the appointment of a special master with trial on the horizon.

U.S. Judge Amit Mehta began a pre-trial conference Wednesday after 9:30 a.m. by saying he hoped to address motions filed in recent days by Rhodes, and to talk about jury selection and courtroom space ahead of the Sept. 27 seditious conspiracy trial.

Judge Mehta, a Barack Obama appointee, explained that he denied the request to appoint a special master because he had “no idea” what the purpose would be. He also denied a trial delay, noting the “government has consistently been providing discovery to defendants in this case — for months and beyond.”

The judge, pushing back on Rhodes’ contention that there has not been adequate time to prepare for trial and review discovery, noted that the issue of the trial date has been settled since May.

Trump Lied About Secret Service Concerns to Throw Off New York AG

Trump wanted home court advantage for a deposition with the New York attorney general, so he cited Secret Service concerns with the AG’s office. The Secret Service had no concerns.

In the days before his Aug. 10 deposition, according to those two sources and a third person familiar with the discussions, Trump’s legal team asked that the contentious interview at the AG’s office be relocated to a more comfortable, convenient spot for the former president: Trump Tower.

Apparently they asked “in secret”. So the SS didn’t know about it.

Not counting plea deals, the DOJ has been putting away 1/6 insurrectionists with a very high conviction to count ratio:

Are those sentences still too low considering the crimes? Yes. That goes for the plea deals and the convictions. But they’re convictions and show that this was anything but a bunch of peaceful tourists. This was a deadly armed insurrection with intent to end democracy and interfere with the certification process.

And at its heart, Trump incited and directed this operation with his cronies like Meadows, Stone, and others.

Pretty much all of this. A huge part of the struggle is convincing idiot “independents”, and people who don’t follow politics, of how monstrously dsingenuous the GOP is with politics in general and abortion in particular.

As I’ve said ad nauseum, I’m surrounded by people who hate Trump but refuse to believe that the GOP is this fucking crazy.

Pick your reason:
• They wouldn’t behave this way so therefore any elected official wouldn’t.
• They always vote Republican and are in utter denial about how broken the party is.
• Democrats must be doing something as bad as turning women into baby factories, just you wait!
• They don’t care about these issues until it affects them.

These guys are out there literally lying about abortion bans, openly saying they’re going to impeach just about every Democrat they can if they get the keys back, etc. and people.

Just.

Don’t.

Care.

I mean, Jesus Christ, the Trump administation set up fucking concentration camps full of non-white children and the general reaction I got was “YOU CAN’T SAY THAT! IT UPSETS THE MAGATS!!!”

Trump was literally caught red-handed with top secret documents that are most likely endangering our country and most people I know are like “BIDEN MADE MY GASOLINES TOO MUCH MONEY!!!”

I do what I can but we have a huge, ignorant-of-politics middle in the American voting public who just don’t give a shit of what happens beyond their four walls.

I’m not going to argue against that but I suspect Lindsey and Turtle have been talking but Kirk being in on it doesn’t add up to me. He’s an Extremist’s Extremist and him saying something reasonable contrary to the Right Wing elite’s mixed messaging is hard for me to accept. These are cunning folks, but not smart or wise. I don’t think they have the discipline as a group to work together on a chess level strategy. They’ve always been checkers.

re: #108 Mattand

As I’ve said ad nauseum, I’m surrounded by people who hate Trump but refuse to believe that the GOP is this fucking crazy.

The simple truth is that Trump is the modern GOP made perfect in every way. There is no pathology in Trump that is not also dominant in the GOP.

The success of the greatest propaganda operation of all time is measured by the millions of Republican and “independent” voters who will not see this, even though it is as obvious as 2 + 2 = 4.

CNN has reached out to Facebook for a comment on a dangerously mentally-ill person making them part of his delusions. I don’t know what they’d have to add to the story.

A Northeastern University staff member was injured Tuesday when a package he was opening detonated on the Boston campus, officials said,

“The staff member sustained minor injuries and is being treated,” Shannon Nargi, a spokesperson for Northeastern University, told CNN in an email. The package was delivered to Holmes Hall, Nargi said.

The staffer, a 45-year-old man, suffered hand injuries, Boston Police Superintendent Felipe Colon said during a news conference Tuesday night.

Investigators haven’t said how the package arrived at the campus and stressed the investigation is ongoing.

During the news conference, officials said they were investigating a motive.

Several federal law enforcement sources told CNN the package contained a rambling note that criticized Facebook founder Mark Zuckerberg and the relationship between academic institutions and the developers of virtual reality. CNN has reached out to Facebook for comment.

The note was in a hard plastic container and detonated when the victim opened the latches and lifted the lid, the sources said.

The package was delivered to the university’s virtual reality center and was opened by someone who works in the center, the sources said.

No, Charlie Kirk isn’t in on the sideshow - he’s dumb enough to take it at face value, like most of the media.

I don’t believe it’s a real fight. I think this is a scripted, staged controversy intended to make people think the majority of the GOP doesn’t want a federal abortion ban. Lindsey is the fall guy.

If the GOP gets control of Congress, there will be a federal abortion ban so fast your head will spin.

Another idea, though admittedly less likely:

Someone in the right wing who really hates Lindsey Graham found the really ugly compromat that’s keeping him under others control, and was going to release it. Either Lindsey would get primaried out in 2026, or he’d have to resign and get replaced with a dependible true believer.

So Lindsey is trying to get ahead of it clumsily, and making any attempts against him look like an attack on anti-abortionism.

Dear Families,

If you use Seesaw to communicate with your student’s teacher, please be aware that APS has disabled access to this platform temporarily. The vendor reported that the Seesaw messaging platform was hacked and is experiencing a nationwide issue where some school district families and teachers were receiving links/URLs to inappropriate images.

If you have received a Seesaw message that appears to be from your student’s teacher or anyone else in the last 24 hours that contains a link/URL, please do not click on the link or open the message.

Once APS confirms the issue has been completely resolved, we will send a follow-up communication to clarify the status. In the meantime, if you need to speak with your student’s teacher, please send them an email directly.

Thank you for your understanding.

You can’t make a movie using someone else’s IP without permission and submit it to a film festival.

The People’s Joker is embracing the playful tagline, “An illegal queer coming of age comic book movie by Vera Drew,” but it seems as though Warner Bros. is taking things a bit more seriously. The TIFF website just revealed that The People’s Joker has been withdrawn from the film festival due to “rights issues.”

The movie is an expression of Drew’s personal truth via popular DC characters like The Joker, Harley Quinn, Batman, and more. In the film, Drew stars as Joker, an aspiring clown grappling with “gender identity, first love, and old foes all while founding an illegal comedy theater in Gotham City.” The production is a filmmaking feat that saw Drew open the creative process to other artists, musicians, and animators eager to contribute to a project that could resonate with audiences that big budget superhero movies very, very, very, rarely speak to through their narratives. It’s a film that only came together due to Drew’s drive and ability to inspire others to see this vision through to the finish line.

On July 1, 2022, Minnesota breweries received a windfall.

That day, the Minnesota State Legislature passed a law allowing the sale of products containing THC. It was a baffling development, considering state Republicans’ longstanding opposition to marijuana legalization, yet Statute 151.72 passed—unanimously, with zero debate, in a GOP-controlled Senate.

There is some debate about whether some Republican lawmakers read or understood the statute, which was sponsored by the Democratic-Farmer-Labor opposition. For the past few years, the state has already allowed the sale of products containing delta-8 THC, the less-potent minor cannabinoid. But the new bill also legalized the sale of delta-9 THC, the major cannabinoid that creates the euphoric effect most marijuana users seek. With that, the least-regulated legal THC market in the United States was open for business.

She seems to think she can get away with it:

INTERVIEWER: I need to ask about the illegal nature of it. I liked your answer to this in the press notes, but really, because I know that parody law and all those types of rules, it’s very gray area kind of stuff. What actually is the illegal nature of this movie? Is it truly illegal to the point, this is very businessy, but to the point where getting a distributor might be a scary situation, because can they distribute it?

DREW: I think this film can be 100% distributed. It is completely protected under fair use and copyright law. Like a parody law. The only thing that makes it weird in both of those categories is nobody’s ever taken characters and IP and really personalized it in this way. So I think that’s the thing that really kind of makes it seem a lot more dangerous than I actually think it is. I mean, I get it, look, I put an “illegal comic book movie” on the poster, but that was just to get your butts in the seats.

I’m pretty sure she won’t get away with it.

“Rather than selling the company or taking it public, Mr. Chouinard, his wife and two adult children have transferred their ownership of Patagonia, valued at about $3 billion, to a specially designed set of trusts and nonprofit organizations. They were created to preserve the company’s independence and ensure that all of its profits — some $100 million a year — are used to combat climate change and protect undeveloped land around the globe.”

Converting the LGF code from PHP 5.6 to PHP 8 is … intense.

A real headache in particular: PHP 8 tightens up the rules for classes. Methods within classes have to be defined as ‘static’ in order to be called without instantiating a class. Previously all methods inside classes were treated as static by default.

There was a time when the Sacrament of Holy Matrimony and the civil institution of marriage were identical.

In our modern secular state they are not. If you choose not to recognize that two people are married in the eyes of God that is your religious right.

But you are required to recognize their civil rights as a married couple in the eyes of the law.

exactly - the public square / commerce has to bend. Your private religion does not.

The bigger basic problem is the obvious double standard in denying the right to a civil marriage:

- Two adult virgins have a deep and abiding love - the same as any devout believer in religious marriage / against ssm would. (Kills the frivolous marriage argument.)
- These two adult virgins want to get married.
- They have no interest in sexual activity - ever.
- In fact they are both so shy they dont even do pda’s.
- They will sleep in separate beds in separate rooms from day 1.
- They don’t want children, ever.

Any man and woman (traditional definitions) couple who feels this way can get married at city hall. They can’t even be questioned! And they’re automatically entitled to every federal/state benefit and protection.

Now change ‘any man and woman’ to a SSM couple and explain what is different.
I submit, nothing.

Did they not supply an upgrade tool? Python did when they went from 2 to 3.

Thanks—I’m glad it’s being said, and Terry Moran said it very well. I was standing in front of some young people today at work and overheard them joking about an off-the-cuff comment Biden made that clearly was a joke. They took it to be the comment of a doddering old man. I doubt there will ever be any getting through to them (and it’s not my place to push my views onto them), but perhaps someday they’ll understand how important his election was—and that goes for me, the Warren voter, too.

So what happens if the GOP wins a majority in the House come November?

If that happens I expect the GOP to set up a commission to investigate the 6 Jan Commission, and the new commission will deny the entire pile of evidence, ruling it a political stunt.

This will never end.

The real problem is that half the country wants a strong-man dictator like Trump.

The bad news is that gerrymandering + inherent features of the US political system favor Republican minority rule.

So elections will be nail biters indefinitely, unless Republicans win big enough to end elections.

Very true!

Biden and his team have spent the past two years trying to put out the fires that Pompeo (tfg’s Secretary of State) laughingly noted that he and tfg had set. (That includes Afghanistan.)

The Baltimore State’s Attorney’s Office on Wednesday filed a motion in court to vacate Adnan Syed’s murder conviction, opening up the possibility of a new trial.

Syed is currently spending life in prison for the 1999 murder of his high school girlfriend Hae Min Lee, whose body was discovered in Leakin Park.

He was a juvenile at the time he allegedly committed the murder.

The case gained national recognition when it was featured on the podcast Serial, which questioned some evidence used to convict Syed.

Other information has since come to light leading some to doubt whether Syed was ever in fact guilty.

Prosecutors now say they’ve uncovered previously undisclosed material suggesting two other suspects could’ve potentially been responsible.

“To be clear, the State is not asserting, at this time, that Mr. Syed is innocent,” The Baltimore City State’s Attorney’s Office said in a statement Wednesday. “While the investigation remains ongoing, when considering the totality of the circumstances, the State lacks confidence in the integrity of the conviction and requests that Mr. Syed be afforded a new trial.”

Prosecutors move to vacate Adnan Syed’s lifetime murder sentence (ABC-2 Baltimore)

It’s not burning green. The streak is compression plasma, same as a re-entry. The green color is caused by oxygen being ionized by the compressive shock.

The controversy was last year when the US and UK intervened to ‘torpedo’ a 60 billion Euro deal submarine deal between France and Australia. The French recalled their ambassador from Australia over that.
en.wikipedia.org

Things have calmed down a lot now that Australia has realized that it was totally fucked over by the previous Australian government with the help of Bojo and a over-naive Biden.

The previous Australian government ordered conventional subs from France. France said, ok, we’ll rework our existing nuke design for you. Then the Aussies, masters in military procurement fuckups (especially for submarines) suddenly announced they wanted nuke boats. The French said, uh, ok, we’ve put a lot of work into this, but we could sell you the nuke versions we are already building. But it turned out the Aussies had made a deal with Bojo (and Biden) to buy some non-existent hybrid british- American sub.

The French were, rightly, pissed.

And it all turns out to be shit. Neither the US, not the UK, has the industrial capacity to make new nuke subs for Australia for at least the next 20 years (let alone a hybrid Anglo-US sub that isn’t even on the drawing boards).

But all’s well that ends well.

Unless you’re an Australian submariner who’s going to be serving on a Collins class submarine for the next 30 years.

saw something similar in Greater Cincinnati during one of the Perseid meteor showers in the late 1960s. Lots of shooting stars and fireballs that night, but the big green one slowly tumbling north to south mostly horizontal to the ground was the star of the night. It even trailed sparkles. People talked about it for years afterward (hey! even tonight being talked about!)

A socialism of those with good blood, you might say.

They divide the world into “deserving” and “undeserving.” Because God is all-powerful, being rich is evidence of God finding you deserving, while being poor is evidence of God finding you undeserving.

Clearly, transferring any wealth from the deserving to the undeserving is working counter to God’s will.

Charles of course is no longer Prince of Wales (as the King does not have other titles.)

Andrew is something like 7th in line now, so yes, it is a surprise that ChuckTres did not name his eldest son (now the Prince of Wales) as his stand-in for times when the King can’t perform duties.

There was discussion on here about Elizabeth being Queen during Apartheid in South Africa, and her responsibilities during such atrocities. So here is an opposing viewpoint from a different source..

‘Elizabeth, you’ve lost weight!’ Nelson Mandela’s incomparable relationship with The Queen
countrylife.co.uk

In the dark days of the 1980s, Her Majesty’s anti-apartheid conviction played a subtle but important part in putting pressure on the South African regime, with former Commonwealth Secretary-General Sir Shridath Ramphal calling her ‘both an ally and an advocate’ in the fight against racism. And when the new South Africa emerged under the leadership of Nelson Mandela, the former political prisoner and the British sovereign developed a warm and happy relationship which lasted many years.

‘They had a very warm friendship,’ Zelda la Grange, Mandela’s private secretary from 1994 to 2013, told Reuters.

‘They shared the sense of duty, the sense of service and a calling that they adhered to throughout their lives, and there was a deep respect between the two of them.’

Mandela even got Her Majesty up on her feet and dancing during a 1996 concert at The Royal Albert Hall, according to journalist-turned-politician Liz Jarvis. ‘No-one could resist the charisma of Nelson Mandela.’

Zelda La Grange also shared some happy memories in her Reuters interview. ‘There are a few anecdotes but what stands out is we were in Buckingham Palace once,’ she said.

‘Approaching the queen, Mr. Mandela had a very wicked sense of humour. So, he walked up to the queen and when he saw her he said: ‘Elizabeth, you’ve lost weight!’ and the queen burst out laughing. I think he was the only person in the world who could comment on the queen’s weight and get away with it,” La Grange added.

Two of the highest-profile Republicans in the Senate are publicly defying Minority Leader Mitch McConnell (R-KY) on high-stakes issues vital to the GOP’s chances of retaking the majority next year,” Axios reports.

“GOP senators and party strategists declined to blame McConnell for the antics of Sens. Rick Scott (R-FL) and Lindsey Graham (R-SC). They see the ‘freelancing’ — as one source close to the leader described it — as a sign of the Senate as an institution breaking down under modern incentive structures.”

countrylife.co.uk

Discussion of Elizabeth II’s legacy is never going to settle because she’s by design a person and a symbolic figure embodying both a nation and that nation’s government.

It’s not quite the King’s Two Bodies in the way that the idea was developed (to execute Charles I), but it’s analogous. There exists a private individual with cultural power, Elizabeth, that can on an individual basis be a kind and thoughtful person…but in her functional capacity, her role as “queen,” she is the avatar of a system that did some incredibly cruel and violent things, and it is nominally a part of that symbolic monarchy that what happens in the empire is for the sake of the royalty. Like, that’s the point of the pomp, the ceremony, the etiquette and rituals that center the monarch as the prime mover. If your military is under a royal flag, if the officer is from the peerage and holds to the old courtesies…and that military is building a concentration camp in the Kenyan Highlands, what does that signify about the monarch?

But to the people who had things done to them putatively under the tolerance, if not endorsement, of a monarch, why would they want to devote their time to that metaphysical a nuance? It almost turns into Epicurus’ trilemma: If the queen is important and did not intervene, she is immoral or incompetent. If the queen cannot intervene because she has no power, then she is irrelevant. If she is important and does not intervene, she is cruel.

And bear in mind that…the British elite literally set up this system in which they pushed the cultural image of their monarchy onto colonized people, making the monarch the focal point and first cause for “the civilizing process”…both as a political figure and a religious one.

If it sucks to see people say heated things about a dead old lady…well, that system was set up by a bunch of wealthy old men who didn’t have the courage to hoist their own flags, to own their own rapaciousness.

Rail systems brace for shutdowns, Amtrak cancels routes as strike threat nears
Some regional rail agencies said they are preparing for service stoppages as early as Thursday evening before a possible Friday strike

*snip*
Some regional transit agencies said they are preparing for service stoppages as early as Thursday evening ahead of a possible 12:01 a.m. Friday shutdown. They are wrapping up plans to communicate with commuters if a strike is not averted, and some are working with other agencies to direct people to bus alternatives.

The disruptions to passenger systems that operate on freight lines would be felt across several major metropolitan areas, including Washington, Chicago and Los Angeles. The strike threat also eliminated most Amtrak service outside the Northeast Corridor, forcing travelers to find other modes of transportation or cancel plans at the last minute.

Amtrak canceled service on all of its long-distance routes beginning Thursday, most of which have a daily trip in each direction and provide cross-country connections for thousands of Americans. Between 24 and 28 daily trains will not operate while service is suspended.

What I said above isn’t pure theory, either.

It’s a description of what’s going on in my brain, because I’ve been British but also had family from India.

It’s really, really disturbing to think about how accustomed I am to thinking of Elizabeth 2 as just a nice old lady, but to my uncle she would be associated with far darker things…not because she was there, in India, imprisoning leftists, but because everybody that was in India doing those things with a portrait of a British monarch on the wall.

And I straight up can’t imagine what it would be like for an Irishman. Northern Ireland is an open wound of colonialism that oozes monarchist imagery.

I mean, this is the problem with making someone an effigy…you can, Skinner-box-like, pair the noumenon of power with the phenomenon of the monarch mystique, but if people hate the signified they’re not going to love the signifier.

I’m no fan of Julie Roys in general, because she’s way the hell too conservative for me. That said, this story she wrote about the death of a child of a church elder is terrible. It appears that the state Child Welfare and the church failed this child, as well as the other two children who were found in the home and were basically starving to death.

It is not a good story, it has at least one jaw-dropping moment in it. Even though I abhor Roys’ views on LGBTQIA people, she’s not afraid to take on a story that makes a church look bad.

And she was the person wearing the crown while the empire was being dismantled.

Yeah, in a way Elizabeth’s death is also discharging a lot of anger and pain that’s from the time of Victoria. The two are paired across time as effigies of empire in ascent and descent.

But the British Empire didn’t just get passively “dismantled” more than it got passively “asssembled.” It’s end involved the final brutal attempts to hold the empire together, the dictator-and-fascists-supporting jiggery-pokery that was post-empire Cold War fuckery, and the decision absent an empire to sell out the British working class by privatizing everything and turning London into money-laundering capital of the world. A lot of pain got spread around.

Honestly, I have basically the darkest reading possible, which is the most perversely sympathetic: you have a young woman who’s personal identity was largely overrun by an overwhelming cultural and familial pressure to always perform a very specific, very carefully tended role…which is crushing, oppressive. I suspect the way you survive that constraint is to accept it as duty, as the act to which there is no alternative and thus must be done immaculately. Dignity and impersonal pride-of-position are scar tissue not armor.

I was never a sentimental fan of Diana, but as I age and look at my own experience with being forced into compliance with archaic social standards—Southern old-money honor, cattle baron imperiousness—I think there’s a kind of sad quantum entanglement of Elizabeth and Diana. You can see the latter fitted for the facade of the former and just…not tessellate because the time, the place, the media was different. And when Diana succeeded it was with thing viewed as breaches of decorum.

From here on out the royals can never be the same, because the last great performer of the classical genre has passed on. Attempts to keep up the front, the good discipline of public image, have already failed, and we’re watching live as William and Harry try and develop a new, parasocial model of royal-ness that echoes their mother, not their grandmother.

Charles III is…probably screwed. He known to be an ass, he’s 100% toff with no common touch, and he’s cringe even when talking dirty to his mistress. I don’t think he can pull off accessibility, but there’s too many gaps in his armor of dignity to emulate his mother.

I think he should roll with it and just constantly be weird and impolite to the House of Lords.

The Ghost of a Flea  Sep 14, 2022 • 7:23:11pm

I’m sure I’ve forgotten something.

I read about some woman famous for being famous or something, from New Jersey, she was married last month and she had something like 1,500 bobby pins holding up her ‘do. And the march to WWIII continues.

Noticed earlier today that Kazakstan is making clear that they are not going to support Russia.

It would do well of us to remember that WWI and WWII were not just a single war each, but a collection of wars across the globe.

Too often in the US, education and popular entertainment, WWII is presented as some monolith, the good guys (us) vs. the bad guys (Hitler.)

But of course it was far more complicated than that.

How many Americans know of Romania, and Hungary in WWII? How many American’s know the history of say Thailand in WWII?

The Japanese apologists for their actions starting in 1937 is that Japan was liberating their Asian cousins from the yoke of European colonialism.

Well, that is half true.

If we really are entering the final act of the dissolution of the USSR, I hope it is a short act.

But yes, there is a lot of history not well known to the West. Like the time British bureaucratic screwups set up a famine that killed somewhere between 2 and 4 million Bengalis.
