I stopped by work to get my schedule. Today’s freebie was a bag of a dozen chocolate chip cookies that were baked a little too long. I’m into cookie diversity, I grabbed ‘em. I also bought a new battery for the scale. Not a good combo. Maybe I should wait a few weeks before I install it.

These Russel Wilson and Matt Ryan guys don’t seem ready for prime time (no pun intended)
Maybe with time they’ll develop into mediocre NFL QBs

The entire case just highlights the inequity of “justice” if the target is a politician and/or considered high status because of connections or role.

Does anyone really believe that if the person being investigated was named John Smith he would still be walking the street if he had taken classified information from a government building, and may still have some of the stuff hidden after dicking around the Department of Justice for a year on returning the material?

Hell fucking no. The FBI would be flipping every residence and every possible hiding place looking for the stuff, and they would have put the person in cuffs when they executed the search warrant, and there would be no question about an indictment.

But here we are having to play this fucking game about doing a complete and proper investigation that dots all the i’s and crosses t’s, that no ordinary non-connected, non-political person would ever get the deference of, with pundits and legal experts so concerned about the political taint of an indictment. I mean come the fuck on.

Rando 2

Everyone, and I do mean EVERYONE, from Daniel Hale to Reality Winner, didn’t get to have the government ask nicely for a year or more before a search. And even the “search” were pretty different, in that, EVERYONE ELSE BUT DRUMPF would be subjugated to an actual FBI raid.

The Top 10 Comment with the 17 updings advanced to one with 18 updings. It was one I had not yet dinged up, so I did, and it got replaced when I refreshed the category, by a different comment with 18 updings. I gave it a 19th, and it’s still there, post-refresh, with 19 positive dings..

You only have one shot to get the King…you better not miss.

The counterpoint to this is that a sufficiently delayed shot at the King is a miss.

I think there is a new bass player somewhere about a block away. He starts up ba-ba-bum, ba-ba-bum for about 30 seconds then it stops for a random amount of time then starts up again. ‘He’ can’t quite make the transition and then starts over from the beginning.

Global competition is real. It’s always been real.

It’s not much on the top of the American political discussion board, but that is because Americans think they are immune to such competition.

But we’re not.

That is why we have inflation (this time external factors are much more important than some past bouts of inflation) so severe the past two years or so.

In my gloom about our future doom, I imagine a much more dramatic American response to the realities that we want to consume everything but the real world will not allow unlimited desires to be fulfilled.

hi.

Just checking in before bed.

We are in Strathroy, Ontario tonight (a few miles from the border with Michigan). We were unable to meet up with our friends in London today due to scheduling.

We attempted to find a hotel room in London, but every hotel is full. “Hockey tournament, sorry.” Ontario did not inform me there was a hockey tournament going on in London: I will have to file a grievance with the provincial complaint department.

It looks like what we’re going to do is visit my cousin in Michigan, then turn north and go home via the Trans-Canada Highway. My cousin tells me the tree colour in Michigan is magnificent right now.

That, and the route via Saskatchewan is much more interesting than Interstate 80 all the way to Nebraska.

He obviously was under pressure to make the announcements he did make — ones that he should never have revealed to the public. The NY office of the FBI was known as Trumpland, and they were very unhappy that Comey didn’t prosecute, although he totally tanked her Presidential prospects.

Yeah, Crimea and the Donbas region have been occupied since 2014, while other areas that were “annexed” last week have been occupied since this past spring. We’ve seen images of Ukrainian civilians being shipped out by the busload, while Russians have been moved in or native “ethic Russians” appointed to positions of authority. Any vote taken now about who those lands wish to go with would be as legitimate as Saddam’s “reelection.”

The assumption is that Kanye is mad at Kusher and Kushner’s brother because they are funding Kanye’s ex’s clothing line. Oh the drama of it all.

Kanye West Is Now Taking Shots at the Kushner Brothers

Iconic rapper Ye, born Kanye West, is apparently not too pleased that Jared Kushner’s brother’s venture capital firm has invested in ex-wife Kim Kardashian’s clothing line Skims. “FUCK JOSH KUSHNER,” West posted. “WHAT IF I HAD 10% OF KARLIE KLOSS UNDERWEAR LINE WITHOUT YOU KNOWING. AND YOU ONLY HAD 5%,” the rapper wrote. As for his one-time friend Jared, West claimed the former Donald Trump adviser hindered his father-in-law’s presidential administration. “JARED [KUSHNER] WAS HOLDING TRUMP BACK,” he declared in all capital letters, while noting: “IVANKA IS FIRE.” A Jared Kushner spokesperson didn’t return The Daily Beast’s request for comment and West couldn’t be reached.

Russians flee by boat to Alaska after Putin’s military mobilization

Two Russian nationals fleeing President Vladimir Putin’s call-up of military reservists landed by boat on a remote Alaskan island in the Bering Sea and are seeking asylum in the United States, the state’s two senators and U.S. government officials said Thursday.

*snip*

The two appeared this week at a beach near Gambell, a tiny community on the northwest tip of St. Lawrence Island about 40 miles from mainland Russia, where they reported having fled “to avoid compulsory military service,” a spokesperson for Sen. Lisa Murkowski (R-Alaska) told the Associated Press.

Here’s the thing with modern TV and cinema: the pop media are always infatuated with the blockbusters and for the past 20 years so many cinema blockbusters have been super-hero movies, or all actions movies.

How many Fast and Furious have there been?

And how is Sharknado now a “franchise”?

When the clamoring voices cry out that they want “something to happen” in RoP they want what those above genres or franchises offer.

Rings of Power is clearly not an MCU-type of show. It’s about character development and what happens when people with what appear to be good intentions have bad things happen to them, or perhaps even cause the bad things to happen.

In some ways RoP reminds me of the film essay. For example, Welles’ movie F for Fake tells a story but nothing really “happens” in the movie, and I love it.

” Within a few weeks, [the merchant who assumed leadership] began ordering his henchmen to kill those who were sick or dying, ostensibly to reduce the number of mouths that had to be fed. Soon they expanded their warrant to eliminate anyone who challenged their authority. During a month of terror, they bludgeoned or slit the throats of carpenters, craftsmen, rival sailors, and women who were too old or infirm to interest them sexually. They forced others onto boats and set them adrift or threw them into the sea to drown. They clubbed to death the wife of the ship’s preacher and seven of their eight children, leaving their oldest daughter to serve as a concubine to one of the killers.”

Abrams is running for Governor, not the Senate. There is only one senate race in Georgia this year.

Thanks.

That special election for the Senator from GA messed up my mind, thinking this was the time for two Senate races but that was in 2020.

Certainly Warnock will win.

The US Senate will probably remain in deadlock.

Let us be thankful a massive, nay, ultra-massive Socialist effort is now underway to once again make life livable in storm-prone areas in Florida. Scenes from the media yesterday show the full force of Socialist entities are arriving and working in the region.

Without this massive Socialist effort of bridges, roads, cleanup, helicopter rescues, Fire and Police assistance, Military assets, Federal and State Government programs and agencies a lot of people who otherwise want Democrats dead would not be able to exist where they are. And after all this they will continue to vote Republican despite the GOP platform of No Government help at all except to help the wealthy …because Republican Jesus and White.

Trump and his spawn have repeatedly expressed pro-Putin sentiments. Am always surprised that our brother has consistently adhered to his pro-Ukrainian position and pretends that Trump is not really pro-Russia in this conflict. I am hopeful there will be a surge in unlikely young voters in response to Dobbs, student debt cancellation and marijuana law reform that the polls aren’t picking up that could increase the Democratic Senate majority and preserve the House majority. Fingers crossed, some good shit could get done next year in Congress if that happens.

Yes, marijuana can be a “gateway drug” in the sense that it puts you in contact with people who are trying to offer you even more addictive, expensive and hence more profitable drugs.

Decriminalizing and licensing sales will do a lot to put an end to that. Nobody is going to risk losing their pot license over trying to push hard drugs on the side.

Well with Pres. Biden’s latest move, that may become a reality sooner than later. The bible thumpers here in Idaho will no longer have the “It’s against Federal law” excuse anymore and the bean counters will (I hope) finally prevail in legalizing it here in Idaho.

After the machine was installed, it was empty merely 36 hours later, according to several local reports.

Literally at noon [Thursday] we came and did a ribbon-cutting,” Vine Grove Mayor Pam Ogden told WAVE News. “We didn’t post it on the city page until 6 p.m. that night. And by 6 p.m. Friday night, [the vending machine] was empty.”

And according to Chief Mattingly, who installed a camera to keep watch on the vending machine, it was not a case of one person taking all the Narcan or anything like that.

Instead, Mayor Ogden claims Chief Mattingly told her it was a “steady stream” of citizens walking up, grabbing one or two doses of Narcan, reading the literature accompanying it and walking away.

I would go outside when someone would pull up and watch them, and they’d take one and sit there and read the literature, so I think it’s doing some good,” Chief Mattingly told WKU Public Radio.

Chief Mattingly told WLKY News that his department has already ordered more doses of Narcan, and the vending machine will be restocked. The police chief also reportedly said that the initial response to the vending machine shows that the community shows a need for the lifesaving medication.

Well with Pres. Biden’s latest move, that may become a reality sooner than later. The bible thumpers here in Idaho will no longer have the “It’s against Federal law” excuse anymore and the bean counters will (I hope) finally prevail in legalizing it here in Idaho.

MN accidentally opened up to THC derivatives this year, in a famous episode in which Republican lawmakers included it in a bill, which passed quite handily, and then when they realized what they voted for, demanded an immediate recall on the bill. It was quite humorous to watch. Needless to say, the recall effort failed miserably, and THC products are fully legal in consumer quantities in Minnesota now.

Meanwhile, Mrs. Frog Belly White and I are trying to figure out where to retire, since neither of The Boys has turned out to be the next Bill Gates, and almost anywhere in the world is cheaper than here. We’re inclined to move to the Mid Atlantic states, but everywhere outside of the cities is Alabama. Snow removal isn’t too bad with a modest investment. As suggested above, one of the Lake Superior states could be a good option, if you’re not opposed to cold. I’d argue you should be on this side of the river to avoid the crazies in the government over thataway, but there are good and bad places to live in both states.

Agreed with Rupar.

Her mindset seems to be that everything is done only to get elected and not that there are policy choices that should be made on whether it benefits the country and the residents. Which implies that the actual policies and how they affect the citizens of this country are irrelevant as far as she is concerned.

That likely accurately reflects her mindset as both a Republican and a campaign professional. That citizens are only here to be manipulated so that her candidate can seize power.

But I do not think that it adequately informs the CNN listeners on the policies and how they can evaluate them in respect to their own lives.

I’m honestly surprised it’s as close as it is.

Illinois has no problems voting for African-Americans for statewide office. Jesse White could have remained Secretary of State here forever but apparently he decided to retire this year at the young age of 88. If Carol Moseley Braun hadn’t been so incompetent in office, she would still be there. But neighboring states can and do have radically different populations and cultures.

I have on occasion watched CNN shows where this lady has been on. In general I have found her observations useful when they are within her area of expertise, how GOP campaigns are run.

From the Rupar tweet, it appears that deep policy analysis is not among her areas of expertise.

re: #212 Blind Frog Belly White

I grew up in Pittsburgh back in the 1960’s and 1970’s.

It had a lot of positives.

Its geographic location means that it is a combination of both East Coast and Midwest cultures.

It is a regional center. So it had a lot of hospitals and medical support. It had a lot of Universities and museums. It had a lot of shopping that more rural areas relied upon.

The city infrastructure, particularly the physical infrastructure, like roads and housing, was often older, much of it dating back to the 1930s to 1960s. (My parent’s house was built in 1912.) This was both good and bad. Neighborhoods were designed to be walking friendly rather car friendly. The houses were built of in an older heavier fashion, such as plaster and lathe rather than plasterboard. But the infrastructure age meant that much upkeep had been deferred and often things were much more worn out.

The climate was the biggest negative. Many overcast days. Very humid. The Ohio River Valley is apparently notorious for sinus infections. And the wetness combined with the freeze-thaw cycle caused lots of potholes in the roads.

I was part of the great outflow in the 1970s and 1980s as local industry dried up. That made the area one of the most geriatric in the country. I do not know how that is these days.

I suspect that Rochester, Syracuse, and Cleveland share many of these same attributes.

just 4 percent of Americans say they have gotten the updated bivalent booster shot targeted to the omicron variant of Covid-19. Liked The Last Jedi and attempt to move away from Skywalker-centric approach, but the toxic fanboys pushed back hard and Rise of Skywalker was the result.

I’d prefer telling new stories outside of the core trilogy characters and their respective families. Rey, Finn, and Poe could have been a clean break with fresh new stories, but instead they fixed Rey back to Palpatine and the Skywalker families.

It’s like telling history of a galaxy by looking at just one family.

interestingengineering.com

“SpaceX’s Starlink service is getting grindingly slow for some users.

The Starlink internet service was heralded for its lightning-fast speeds when it first launched as a beta in 2020. According to the internet speed testing site Ookla, however, the more people use it, the slower it gets.”

arstechnica.com

“Median latency also got a little worse for Starlink’s US customers, rising from 43 ms to 48 ms. The latest numbers are in Ooka’s Q2 2022 report on Starlink speeds around the world, released Tuesday. “Starlink speeds decreased in every country we surveyed over the past year as more users sign up for service,” this week’s report said. The Q1 report is available here.”

I will not allow Taco Bell to be besmirched. Numerous were the the times that Taco Bell saved me from a hangover in college.

We used to play at a dive Country bar in Flagstaff right next to the Taco Bell.

There were a pair of prostitutes who worked the place, you could see them leave the place several times a night with a different fellow only to come back later and find a new mark.

Business must’ve been a slow one evening, one of them sidled up to me at the end of the night while I was waiting at the bar to get paid and asked if I wanted to drive her to the Taco Bell.

From then on, those ladies were known to the band as the “Taco Belles”

Hello, lizards, Happy Friday.

Today is my rest (at work) day. Yesterday, the football team played in Tyler, TX, roughly 2 hours away, and I help with band props and moving percussion equipment. Got in at midnight. Tomorrow is a band competition. Practice for it starts at 7:45 am, and returning to the school and unloading after the competition will be sometime near midnight.

Valid points.

Clearly there is concern that Ukraine’s offensive is being crippled by problems with StarLink.

Usually offensives continue until some limitation or combination of limitations are reached and cause it to stop. Usually it is lack of supplies, exhaustion, or growing disorganization of the offensive forces. In this case there is concern that access to StarLink might be the issue.

With expected poor fall and winter weather, as well as more Russian mobilizees coming. The goal is to make as much headway as possible.

And, obviously there is a lot of concern that Musk might be attempting to unilaterally determine National Policy for the United States, NATO and Ukraine.

We rabble do not yet have enough information to determine with certainty which of the possibilities is most likely.

However, we can certainly note that we will be “highly displeased” if it is a case of Musk unilaterally overriding our National Security concerns.

It’s not the US.

It’s Russia. Russia keeps surrendering weapons as it flees in the face of oncoming Ukrainian efforts to take back Ukrainian territory from Russian invaders that Ukraine now has a surplus of weapons as compared to earlier in the conflict.

The GOP is a racist terrorist organization  Oct 7, 2022 • 10:18:19am

If you’re a baseball fan, then you know that the MLB playoffs began today, with the first game on the post-season docket being the Cleveland Guardians (née Indians) hosting the Tampa Bay Rays.

Racist Clevelanders have been apoplectic about the name change, accusing CEO Paul Dolan of caving to the woke mob, and they have vowed to boycott the team. Welp, attendance this season was up over last year (when Cleveland finished a mediocre 80-82), but it is still lower than previous seasons when they have made postseason runs.

I can’t think of a better example of cutting off your nose to spite your face. The first part of the name - Cleveland - didn’t change. If you’re a Clevelander (I grew up there), the Guardians still represent you. Furthermore, if you know anything about how they were named the Indians in the first place, then you know that it’s pretty shameful. So to me, they did the right thing.

It was long overdue, as a matter of fact.

I get that many Native Americans don’t mind teams having native names, but no matter how you try to spin this, naming a sports team after a group of people who were the victims of an attempted genocide is ludicrous, and any attempts to mitigate that uncomfortable fact - ie “Native tribes committed genocide against other tribes before the white man came” - is just pathetic.

Furthermore, the Guardians are a great young team this year (the youngest of all the playoff teams, as a matter of fact). They got hot at the right time, and even though on paper Houston and the Yankees are better, a lot can happen in a short series, and I wouldn’t be surprised if they make a deep postseason run. If they continue winning (especially if they bring home the first World Series championship since 1948), only the most die hard racists will continue boycotting the team.

We’ve seen their military in action in the past, and it’s been a mixed bag - Afghanistan. Chechnya. Ukraine (Crimea). They have some effective units, but larger scale conflicts increasingly rely on conscripts and low pay and low morale contributes to failures.

But Ukraine also exposed serious issues with logistics, equipment deficiencies, comms issues, and strategic/tactical doctrines. A lot of it stems from fact that no one in chain of command closest to Putin said this was a real bad idea and here’s why. They just said they’d do it, and threw personnel at the problem with disastrous effect.

At start of war, everyone was expecting to see Armata tanks and latest aircraft getting air superiority in driving back Ukrainian positions.

Turns out both were in exceptionally short supply. Russia wasn’t risking watching the Armatas get turned into roasting ovens. Within weeks, even the T-72 and T-80s were being turned into turret tossers and Russia was trying to get older T-64s on the front because they were losing so many tanks to antitank weapons.
