I think it would help the Democrats’ prospects in the midterms if Musk could get the deal done so Sippy Cup Caligula can start tweeting this month.

According to a report by The Verge, Meta’s Horizon Worlds metaverse app is so dreadful, even the people making it don’t want to use it. So if you woke up this morning wondering, “I wonder if anyone’s figured out what the metaverse is for?” you can rest assured, it’s still nope.

Horizon Worlds is, according to these memos, “a synchronous social network where creators can build engaging worlds.” Which is to say, it’s Second Life, but in VR, and with Meta branding. The groundbreaking promises of a metaverse have always been as ambiguous and elusive as fairy dust, with no one ever able to concretely say what makes it special or different to online spaces that have been around for decades. And despite gambling everything on it in a world where anyone under 30 doesn’t know what a Facebook is, it seems Meta’s attempts to make sense of it are going so badly that the creators themselves don’t bother using it.

The Verge say they have seen an internal memos from within Meta (née Facebook) that discuss how their flagship VR app for the so-called “metaverse”—according to feedback from playtesters—is so riddled with bugs, “quality issues,” and “papercuts,” that it’s “too hard for our community to experience the magic of Horizon.”

“For many of us, we don’t spend that much time in Horizon and our dogfooding dashboards show this pretty clearly,” The Verge says the VP of Metaverse, Vishal Shah, wrote in a memo sent to staff last month. (Dogfooding is, I have learned, staff using a product before it’s released to the public.) “Why is that?” he continues. “Why don’t we love the product we’ve built so much that we use it all the time? The simple truth is, if we don’t love it, how can we expect our users to love it?”

Between the crazy candidates and the Dobbs ruling, I’m hoping the GOP has snatched defeat from the jaws of victory.

Clearly, the Trump Justices weren’t in on the game, which was the perpetual promise to overturn Roe without actually doing it and opening the Pandora’s Box. And luckily (?) many GOP legislators, long salivating at the prospect of more effectively punishing women for having Unapproved Sex, were unable to contain themselves trying to pass the most draconian abortion bans they could think of.

So you’re saying that a chat with Putin in 2021 so influenced Musk that although he began supporting the Ukrainians with Starlink long after this chat, its effect comes to fruition now? A delayed Jedi mindtrick? /

Nah. More like circurmstances conspiring to make Elon look even worse. Like, SpaceX might’ve, just might’ve, had credibility if Simonyan hadn’t asked Elon openly about shutting down StarLink for the Ukrainians, and if Elon hadn’t pulled that pro-Z stunt by proposing a ludicrous armistice/peace deal… Like, the only idea I’ve seen that is more ludicrous is to reduce Russia to its 1471 borders as any starting point for a peace deal… So, likely Russian Federation jamming, misguided attempt to limit StarLink access for to the Russian Federation government, or the company simply selling more accounts than they have satellites for (the latter three are the most likely reasons).

And that’s what he said to Obama when the ACA passed! Anyone who has vapors over this language doesn’t belong in politics.

OT: This afternoon listening to the podcast of the Thursday Chris Hayes program, I was struck by the comments that the GOP which had pushed for an abortion ban for years didn’t know how to deal with it when suddenly their Court overturned Roe — that they had not prepared for this eventuality and were totally blindsided. But isn’t this the GOP standard strategy, to raze an institution without being able to raise an alternative that is acceptable to the population? Think of their repeated efforts to dismantle ACA without having anything to replace it. They want a world where only the wealthy have choices and the rest of us are serfs at the beck and call of the oligarchs.

Tell me about it. I am wrestling with WinSCP for secure SSH file transfer transactions. All is working fine with vendors that are using the default port 22 for the communications. But we have a new vendor that is wanting to use port 43022 for the transactions and I cannot get the 3rd party software to connect, even using the WinSCP suggested methods from their documentation.

I am coding in C# and it doesn’t support SSH/SFTP natively, so I have to use a 3rd party library.

I went skimming through the replies to Jon’s tweet, and it’s full of people who think gender care is torture. Someone is mentioned that detransitioned as somehow a model - they testified against a bill in CA allowing parents to come in from other states if they need care for their child - and all I can think of is “They got to choose. What about others?”

NEW YORK, Oct. 7 (UPI) — A Nightmare on Elm Street icon Heather Langenkamp said she connected on a deeply personal level to her role as Dr. Georgina Stanton, founder of a hospice home for terminally ill teens, on Netflix’s new young adult horror drama series, The Midnight Club.

“It was really exciting to me. You might know I lost my own son to brain cancer four years ago, and when I read the sides for the audition, I literally burst into tears because I really felt like it was a ghost story of my very own - like something very supernatural was happening that I was being asked to play this role,” Langenkamp told UPI at New York Comic Con on Thursday.

“I felt very equipped,” the 58-year-old actress emphasized, recalling how she told show creator Mike Flanagan, “I’ll probably cry the first few times I run through this, but just stick with me, and I’ll be able to deliver it straight-faced like a doctor would.”

as usual, i have not read down the thread yet….
so if any / all of you have already observed this, apologies in advance

- if musk does this, truth social is toast.

- trump will have to decide what’s more important (twitter) ‘fame’ or the (truth social) grift/money, cause he will not be able to have both

- further, i expect the brain drain out of twitter (by musk’s axe and by choice) will be a crippling blow to the bird

Oct. 7 (UPI) — A Virginia NAACP leader was shot to death while on vacation in Turks and Caicos Islands, according to the Arlington County NAACP.

Kent Carter, vice president of the Arlington County NAACP branch, was killed in a string of possibly gang-related shootings that took three lives, according to the New York Times. Bullets were fired into a vehicle transporting tourists, according to the local police commissioner in the Turks and Caicos.

Carter was celebrating his 40th birthday with the vacation. Carter and his girlfriend were on a hotel shuttle back from a beach when the vehicle was suddenly hit by gunfire.

The NAACP branch said in a statement that Carter was an activist and philanthropist well known “for his dedication to, and uplifting of, our community.”

In Herschel’s “redemption” ad he says he even wrote a book about how he was redeemed. The book came out in 2008. He pressured his side piece to abort their kids in 2009 and 2011.

Then he re-redeemed himself in 2010 and again in 2012.

So I can see his argument: “I have redeemed myself for so many sins, I forget which ones I was redeeming myself for!”

My dad had a .22 rifle that he used in marksmanship classes at his high school in the 1940s. He disabled it, but kept it in our basement for sentimental reasons. My Georgia grandfather had guns everywhere. I was told that once my older brother when he was about 4 was found on my grandparents’ bed playing with a pistol my granddad kept in his headboard (it had compartments). My mom yelled at him and he said he would be safer. I remember climbing into his Chevy pickup when I was 7 or 8 and finding a pistol in the glovebox. I never told my mom. It’s amazing none of us shot someone or ourselves (shotguns just leaning against the wall of the hallway closet).

The creators of the site think that hiring the enemies of America is “patriotic.”

The investigation into the Capitol insurrection on January 6, 2021, is one of the biggest in the history of the United States. Roughly 600 people have been charged for taking part in an attack that left 130 officers injured and seven people dead. Over 100 of those rioters have been specifically charged with assaulting law enforcement. They’re accused of domestic terrorism and conspiracy to “concoct a plan for an armed rebellion to shatter a bedrock of American democracy.”

Now, a former Trump campaign aide has launched a website to find these people jobs.

If you’re an employer with a job opening and you want to fill it with someone who’s been convicted of storming the Capitol, then the “Jobs for J6” website is for you.

The site has been created by Look Ahead America, a right-wing group and one of the leading voices advocating for the rights of those imprisoned for taking part in the Capitol riot, including organizing vigils and protests as well as launching the Political Prisoner podcast series.

“We decided to create a ‘Jobs for J6’ program to help connect these people to patriotic employers who are gonna give them a chance,” Matt Braynard, executive director of Look Ahead America, told VICE News.

re: #148 Barefoot Grin

Growing up we had a .22 that I used to learn to shoot with and a 12-gauge used to deal with the critters that wanted to eat our chickens. Dad had a revolver but sold it when the kids came along. He had no problem with my bolt actions, lever action, 20-gauge or even my CZ-75 clone but the AK concerned him. I had to explain that it was a civilian version and could not do full auto. I found that discussion interesting in a way…

The creators of the site think that hiring the enemies of America is “patriotic.”

Hmmm. If only I had a job for them mucking out a stable, or emptying bedpans.

I always need to be careful what I say, because there are several LGF lizards who model responsible gun ownership and it’s not my role to admonish. I shot a .22 several times at my grandfather’s place under the supervision of an older cousin who went through NRA training—very careful. I also shot each summer at Boy Scouts summer camp: “fire at will” was a running joke for us 12 year olds. It’s just the life I have lived has never required me or interested me enough to pursue shooting and the necessary training.

I’m three beers in and feeling loquacious. William’s post and my response suddenly triggered a memory: I was an Eagle Scout and got tapped for Order of the Arrow in BSA. I was suddenly thrust into the memory of spending a night alone in the wilderness of northern Wisconsin with tender, flint, a tin can, a quarter pound of ground beef and an order to make a lean-to for myself and my own fire, instructions on how to use green branches to make a contraption to cook the beef and how to gather fiddleheads and lake water for soup. We were allowed to bring insect repellent.

Someone snuck me a lighter and I used the repellent to ignite a fire. I lost most of the meat in the flames, but the fiddlehead soup was delicious.

In another life at home, this 9th grader was also pretty good at separating seeds and stems.

Where I grew up, WHEN I grew up, everyone had guns, but nobody defined themselves by them. They’d have a shotgun for birds and small game and a rifle for deer. And that’s about it. I didn’t hunt, so I had little interest either way. Dad hunted, unsuccessfully, so we had two old shotguns and a “sporterized” M1903 Springfield.

When my maternal grandfather died and my grandmother moved in with her mother and sister, Dad took the small revolver my grandfather had. He asked Nana, who wanted to keep it, how she’d use it. She said if somebody broke in, she’d fire it to scare them.

“Okay,” Dad said, “Where are you going to point it?” Nana said the ceiling (she lived on the second floor). “So you’ll blow a hole in your roof?” So she said the floor. “And shoot your sister?” who lived below Nana’s room. So, without further objection, he took it.

I could have been shot at Boy Scout summer camp. The slow kid in our troop had a misfire at the rifle range and pointed his rifle at my head while asking the instructor for help.

That paints an amazing picture. My first thought, though, was of the Christopher Lloyd character in last year’s movie Nobody where a seemingly zoned out Lloyd gets attacked by Russian mafia in his retirement home and he pulls a sawed-off out from under his blanket in his darkened room where he had been sleeping in front of the TV.

Years ago, I was invited to Boseman MT by a friend from the Bowsite, to hunt. I stayed at his place, where he and his wife each had a loaded gun on their nightstand, as well as a loaded shotgun behind the door. I made sure I didn’t have to get up in the night to pee.

I had not yet seen “Snatch”, so the line didn’t occur to me, but now when I remember that, I think of Turkish asking Tommy what he needed a gun for.

“Protection!”

“Protection? From what? Zee Germans?”

Hey, I’d have peed out the window if I had to, but it was early November in Bozeman so it was really damn cold! I might have died of indecent exposure!

That’s when it was no longer useful (and I quit). Suddenly weed got a lot like what you can get from a dispensary now (around ‘83). It was far too strong for me. I have dabbled in MA dispensary flower now several decades later, but I’ve also given that up. I still get edibles from time to time, though. I can manage that slow buzz.

Really OT, but I haven’t had any down-dings since teleski guy was here and he couple of times took issue with something I said. It’s odd, but I think of him pretty regularly when I’m here because he was such a force when I joined. I hope he’s doing well, especially as we head into ski season.
