I recall seeing a copy of Michelangelo’s David at the Movieland Wax Museum in California with a fig leaf over his weenie. Even that was still enough to shock my grandmother.

Yes, but that doesn’t resolve the entirely separate crisis of David’s packing a fantastically muscle-y ass.

The Ghost of a Flea  Mar 23, 2023 • 10:41:03am

Less jocular than my last two statements: this is yet another permutation of the core reactionary premise, your body is not your own.

Whether David has any eroticism is entirely subjective, which is a subset of the fact that anything possessing eroticism is entirely subjective. I saw the David in person as a kid; it didn’t register as erotic to me at all, mostly I was amused by the hands and feet being out of proportion. I can joke now because I’m old enough to imagine someone else’s gaze, but not feel any kind of hazard or judgement expressing it: Mike was probably into dudes, it’s a feasible interpretation to see the male form as possessing erotism.

But if you view a child as simply something that must be pruned into another little simulacrum of the in-group culture—that they have to literally reproduce the culture by desiring in only the prescribed ways—then the idea that your kid might feel something on an individual basis is a crisis.

This creates the endless, bad-faith recursion of prudishness—the censors have to constantly dwell on the erotic to define it, then prohibit things they find erotism in to others…which doesn’t eliminate erotism, it just makes it more complicated and filled with shame.

This occasionally creates absolute monsters, but mostly it just makes people full of shame…which is close-enough to a victory for conservatives, because their theoretical support of individuality is dwarfed by their firm belief that people—but especially their kinds—exist only as functional units.

No, but authoritarians tend to be perverts. They don’t see things like we do.

Good erotism is anything that is specifically for their own enjoyment; bad erotism is anything that people enjoy at their own discretion.

Your body is not your own: it belongs to a succession of authority figures who may wrangle amongst themselves about whom is owed what, like aristocrats deciding who gets what cut of meat at the table.

Reactionary circles attract predators and foster predation precisely because the community is used to not questioning authority, which means that while there may theoretically be accountability, in practice one can abuse power just so long as one does not encroach on the power-consumption of one’s superiors.

She’s been consistently pro-Ukrainian since the beginning of her tenure. One far-right Czech politician, who’s also pro-Ukrainian, explained it as more of a cultural matter: Occidental civilization versus Oriental despotism (and more than a few Czechs don’t view Russians as Europeans, at least not from the cultural POV - they see the Russians as “Asiatic descendants of the Mongol hordes”, as I’ve heard it said).

The problem with this is that it depends on people sending the saturated filters in to be decontaminated.

According to U.S. Center for Disease Control, forever chemicals may increase the risk of kidney or testicular cancer, high blood pressure, high cholesterol, pre-eclampsia in pregnant women, and decreased vaccine response in children. They are no longer manufactured in Canada, but can leach into the waterways through use various products.

As it stands, they are usually removed from drinking water by filters that use activated carbon, but Mohseni said these tools don’t capture all of the forever chemicals — including some of the newer ones developed after the issue came to the attention of regulators in 2015.

Afterward, he added, those chemical-saturated filter materials are disposed of, leaving the PFAS in landfills to make their way back into the environment.

“We developed alternative absorbents to activated carbon that not only capture the long-chain PFAS, but also shorter-chain, so basically a wide spectrum of PFAS that might be in the water,” he explained. “Once we capture them, when they are saturated, we can regenerate.”

Nah, it’s not the white race we want to kill off (especially since I am white), it’s just the dumbest third or so. Let’s face it, if you’re white and you’re still dumber than a box of rocks after a thousand years of dominance, privilege, and, frankly, achievement, it is probably time for your bloodline to end so someone else can have a chance.
Many of them have forgotten their heritage too. White men landed on the Moon, yet many white people today are so stupid they deny it even happened. A white man, Ferdinand Magellan, organized the first circumnavigation of the Earth, yet many whites today deny that the Earth is even a sphere. Another white man, King Gillette, invented the safety razor, yet many white men today prefer to ignore its use and go around looking like cavemen and exceptionally pudgy vikings.

It has to be assumed that any moderately functional Trumpist would lie their ass off in voir dire to get on the jury to find their God innocent. If they aren’t braying about their love for Trump 24/7 on social media, such lies would be difficult to catch.

IMO jury selection is not really set up to deal with this level of systemic bad faith.

I know some have despaired of Trump ever facing justice for his crimes. However, the speed with which the courts swatted away his objections to Corcoran being ordered to divulge material ordinarily protected by attorney-client privilege based on the crime fraud exception is incredibly bad news for him. Jack Smith has solid evidence Trump plotted to conceal his possession of classified documents, and the courts know it. I can’t conceive of how this doesn’t lead to an indictment.

Rolex is very aggressive about financing investigations then bringing in federal authorities to seize knockoffs.

The cases usually end with a video of a large road roller crushing the counterfeit watches to show to the folk back in Switzerland.

Somewhere I have a couple of knockoffs seized as evidence.

As Callahan says, “no one ever counterfeits a one dollar bill.”

A one dollar bill is good money and your Seiko is a good accurate timepiece.

Just because you purchased a watch from a Rolex dealer, doesn’t ensure it’s authenticity.

In local news, this morning around 5am my lights dimmed and a very loud but short electrical buzz rang from the cellar. About a minute later, another one did. My Nixie clock reset, as did my modem.

I made my way down to the cellar but didn’t see anything wrong.

Now I know what it is: My electric water heater went to plumbing heaven.

No hot water now.

The plumber will be here tomorrow, where he will see if it actually died (I’m pretty sure it did), and we will bite the bullet and have them install an on-demand water heater ($$$$$!)

A few months back my hot water tank sprung a leak and since my furnace was the better part of 30 years old and more rust than metal, I bit the bullet and replaced my furnace and hot water tank with a combo unit. It cost as much as a small car but i got an interest free 7 year loan from Mass Save. My nat gas bill has been seriously slashed and endless hot water, so net plus I guess.

A federal jury convicted two doctors today for their involvement in a scheme to commit health care fraud.

According to court documents and evidence presented at trial, Dr. William Lawrence Siefert, 69, of Dayton, Ohio, and Dr. Timothy Ehn, 50, of Union, Kentucky, orchestrated their health care fraud scheme through Northern Kentucky Center for Pain Relief, a pain clinic in Florence, Kentucky. Siefert, a medical doctor, was employed by the clinic, and Ehn, a chiropractor, was the clinic’s owner. Siefert and Ehn engaged in a scheme to bill Medicaid for millions of dollars in medically unnecessary urinalysis testing for their patients, which included urinalysis testing purportedly conducted on faulty machinery.

Siefert and Ehn were each convicted of health care fraud. Ehn was additionally convicted of conspiracy to commit health care fraud. Siefert and Ehn are both scheduled to be sentenced on Sept. 20. Siefert faces a maximum penalty of 10 years in prison. Ehn faces a maximum penalty of 10 years in prison on each of the health care fraud conspiracy and health care fraud counts. A federal district court judge will determine any sentence after considering the U.S. Sentencing Guidelines and other statutory factors.

David is in Florence. My guess is that the thought challenged attacker would attack the copy that is outside on public display because they would be unaware they the original is displayed indoors at a museum nearby.

Also, it would be easier to reach, since the platform the original stands on is probably higher than the statue is tall.

The copy in Las Vegas would probably be the easiest to get to. (And for those with more peaceful purposes, it’s an exact, full-scale replica, and there was no-one else there when I saw it.)

My wife is proofreading a book now similar to Naomi Klein’s “Disaster Capitalism.” This book is on disaster spirituality. The premise of the book is the libertarian economic ideas of privatising everything are much easier to employ against religious people to create nationalist Christians (Nat-Cs), since they are primed by their faiths for authoritarianism already. It is much harder for a religious person to parse they are being down a path of exploitation, particularly when the person is popular and espouses normal religious ideas at first.

I could not use an on-demand heater in a house. Currently, I pay no water bill because the gas heater in my unit supplies the downstairs unit as well (yes, of course I fucking pay for it, but it’s built into rent). I have been known to take half-hour showers because there have to be a hundred gallons of hot water in that tank and I’m paying for none of it directly. If I had unlimited hot water, my temptation would be to spend all morning under that glorious heat.

Well, for a certain demographic, “naked guy” (especially sans figleaf) and “sexual” pretty much the same thing.

Unfortunately, said demographic has decided to leverage its influence on public education - aided and abetted by like-minded/pandering/scared officialdom - to make attitudes like this SOP for schools…

I have two sources of water: a spring-fed well and a spring-fed cistern. I hate wasting water waiting for the hot water to arrive and I hate wasting electricity (and paying for it!) keeping water hot in the traditional tank for the hours when I don’t need hot water. On-demand is the absolute way to go for me.

The problem with this is that it depends on people sending the saturated filters in to be decontaminated.

Private people probably won’t. ($$$, time involved). This is where governments come in, such as my village sending our r/o unit filters to a hazardous waste company for proper disposal (not an option for people in town).

Yep it’s official. It was a tornado that touched down in Montebello California yesterday.

A tornado ripped through an industrial area of Montebello on Wednesday, carving a path of destruction that included damage to several buildings and cars, the National Weather Service confirmed.

The twister touched down at 11:14 a.m. and was on the ground for two to three minutes, NWS said. Aerial footage from Sky5 showed roofs damaged and debris scattered across the area of South Vail Street and Washington Boulevard.

The National Weather Service immediately dispatched a team to Montebello, a city eight miles east of downtown Los Angeles, to assess the damage.

Officials later determined the tornado was an EF1 on the Enhanced Fujita scale with peak winds of 110 miles per hour. It was approximately 50 yards wide and covered four-tenths of a mile.
