The Fox News Employee Handbook — [Explicit Language] A Nazi crashed a U-Haul into the White House. The new civil war and the Red Hat entertainment complex’s complicity in political violence. It turns out Fox News Channel is super woke. Fake news about an explosion at the Pentagon was turbo boosted by Elon’s Twitter Blue thing. Trump knew he couldn’t keep the classified documents. Jack Smith issues a subpoena for Trump Organization records. E. Jean Carroll asks judge to amend her lawsuit against Trump. We backpedal a bit on the CNN town hall. Biden, the debt ceiling, and the 14th Amendment. With Buzz Burbank, music by Brian Lisik, Subredlux, and more!

Two threads ago.

re: #296 🐈 Crush White Nationalism 🐈

It’s the daily fail. They probably got everything about this wrong.

It is correct. It was reported in the American Journal of Emergency Medicine, August 31, 2020

Abstract

Methylcyclopentadienyl manganese tricarbonyl (MMT) is an organometallic compound used as a gasoline additive for its antiknock properties. Human ingestion of MMT has not previously been reported. We present the case of a 54-year-old man who developed seizures and altered mental status after drinking 12 oz. of MMT-containing NOS Octane Booster Racing Formula. Due to label similarities, he mistook this for the NOS High Performance energy drink. The patient was intubated due to persistent seizures despite benzodiazepine treatment and admitted to the intensive care unit. He had two further seizures while intubated, but he was successfully extubated on the 4th day post-ingestion. He was confused and ataxic following extubation, but one day later his symptoms resolved and he was discharged without further incident.
This case highlights the importance of responsible labeling of consumables. It is important for clinicians and poison centers to report any such instances to the United States Food and Drug Administration.

Toxic boost: Acute, reversible neurotoxicity after ingestion of methylcyclopentadienyl manganese tricarbonyl (MMT) mistaken for an energy drink (full case study available at the link)

The girlfriend taking him to the emergency room probably saved his life.

The Daily Mail article notes that the case was from 2020 but is getting attention again, so they wrote the article about it as a warning that you should be sure of what you ingest, noting that about 2/3 of poisonings are children who confuse a brightly-coloured package or can as something edible.

Ethics Committee closes GOP-initiated investigation of Swalwell without finding wrongdoing

Won’t stop FAUX from lying.

rawstory.com

On Tuesday, the Ethics Committee said that after two years, they hadn’t found any wrongdoing on the part of Swalwell.

“Nearly ten years ago, I assisted the FBI in their counterintelligence investigation of a campaign volunteer. The case and my assistance were briefed to Republican Speaker of the House, John Boehner, and two years later, Republican Speaker of the House, Paul Ryan, re-appointed me to the House Intelligence Committee. Neither Speaker questioned my actions nor politicized my cooperation. Despite the FBI repeatedly saying I was nothing but helpful and never accused of wrongdoing, this complaint was filed by a House Republican. … If the intent in bringing this complaint and leveling false smears was to silence me that is not going to happen. I will continue to be a voice on behalf of my constituents and a passionate defender of democracy.”

I remember one time at work, someone had tacked a wedding invitation to the break room bulletin board. The invitation was decorated with little swastikas along the edge. I freaked out for about a second until I realized: The Hindu version is straight up (+ base) and down and the arms are clockwise. The nazi version is tilted (x base) and the arms are counter clockwise.

I’m late to the game here but I wanted to say that okra is only slimy of you overcook it. If made properly it’s delish. I like frozen and I add it to the stew at the end and turn off the flame. It heats with the stew and is perfect. Using fresh I cook it for like 3 minutes and then turn off the flame and let it all sit for 10 minutes.

Kale is only good off you bake it with salt and garlic powder until it turns into crisps (remove the thick stems).

Beets are, well, beets. Use with goat cheese in salads (there’s little that goat cheese won’t help), add some raisins or Crasins, fresh fruit and a fruit dressing like raspberry or pear (pear and walnut dressing is the bomb!)

Carrots are good caramelized with a tsp of sugar and a dash of lemon juice.

There’s my two cents and I’m finally caught up with threads. It’s been a busy couple of weeks.

Hi, y’all!

According to the bill to remove sales tax from women’s hygiene products, and baby diapers, it looks like the only decent bill to come out of the Texas Legislature in a long time.

There’s still time for Gov. Abbott to veto it though, then the GOP all say “oh well we tried” and not vote to override.

Marcus Lamb

Lamb’s Daystar TV applied for and was granted a loan under the 2020 United States government Paycheck Protection Program (PPP) to help pay employees’ salaries during restrictions due to the COVID-19 pandemic; it received $3.9 million.

Soon after receiving the funds, the church purchased a 1997 14-seat Gulfstream V aircraft worth $8-10 million. In December 2020, Daystar TV paid back the loan with interest after the television show Inside Edition investigated the purchase of the aircraft, which had been used for Lamb family vacations.

What is it with these quacks and Gulfstreams? Besides its role as flying palace, the various Gulfstreams are used for a variety of military tasks. As a relatively small aircraft with excellent range and endurance it is well suited to electronic surveillance and reconnaissance. This is an Israeli Gulfstream 550 Oron ISR (intelligence, suveillance and reconnaisance) aircraft. Note the very large conformal antennas on the sides of the fuselage.

NEW YORK (AP) — Target is removing certain items from its stores and making other changes to its LGBTQ merchandise nationwide ahead of Pride Month, after an intense backlash from some customers including violent confrontations with its workers.

“Since introducing this year’s collection, we’ve experienced threats impacting our team members’ sense of safety and well-being while at work,” Target said in a statement Tuesday. “Given these volatile circumstances, we are making adjustments to our plans, including removing items that have been at the center of the most significant confrontational behavior.”

Target declined to say which items it was removing but among the ones that garnered the most attention were “tuck friendly” women’s swimsuits that allow trans women who have not had gender-affirming operations to conceal their private parts. Designs by Abprallen, a London-based company that designs and sells occult- and satanic-themed LGBTQ clothing and accessories, have also created backlash.

The Pride merchandise has been on sale since early May. Pride Month is held in June.

I’m hoping we see RICO charges. Per Wikipedia: “A US Attorney who decides to indict someone under RICO has the option of seeking a pre-trial restraining order or injunction to temporarily seize a defendant’s assets and prevent the transfer of potentially forfeitable property and to require the defendant to put up a performance bond. “

Atheists targeting atheists or “my non-belief is stronger than your non-belief” or “my zero is more equal to zero than your zero.”

Someone commented a few threads ago I don’t use “no true atheist” arguments (I like to believe that is true anyway).

This guy Wheeler? He’s using Christian apologetics arguments, which would be a mighty strange way for an atheist to argue.

This is an argument for a “first cause” or “prime mover.” The honest answer is “we don’t know, but we’re working on it.”

Moreover, a “law” in scientific parlance is an assertion about an observation which can be repeated through experimentation over and over, which gives you a predictable outcome or a range of outcomes.

For example, the Law of Gravity is the observation that two or more masses will attract each other toward the centre of their masses. It is not something which was “set in motion” or “imposed from outside.” It simply is.

The Theory of Gravity is the explanation of why we observe this. Theories are under constant revision and science is never “settled” (I hate that phrase)—it is always tentative against the possibility a theory can be overturned by an anomalous observation or experiment which can be repeated.

Koch’s Postulates are a good example of a theory (of infectious disease) which had to be changed to accommodate new data (specifically, the idea of a sub-clinical infection, demonstrated with a range of diseases from typhoid fever to Covid-19).

The only real definition of atheists I’ve held is the relatively modern construction:

Agnostic atheist (doesn’t know if there is one or more gods, but doesn’t believe in them due to lack of sufficient evidence)
Gnostic atheist (knows for certain there is at least one god which does not exist: This position has a burden-of-proof to demonstrate that god doesn’t exist).

Either kind of atheist can still like Christmas music and cheesy Christmas movies. /s

Most (but not all) atheists fall into the first camp. A similar structure exists for theists (gnostic and agnostic).

I do hold that self-described agnostics are agnostic atheists: They don’t behave as a religious believer in any faith: They don’t pray, they don’t worship, they don’t live their life in such a way you would take them to be a believer. Since there are real social penalties for using the term “atheist,” ofttimes people will shy away from the term (“agnostic” is more acceptable in society), or ingrained that somehow atheists are bad.

Looking at that guys main timeline, I can only see two tweets (that one doesn’t show up on it). I don’t know how Twitter works so I can’t dive in and see other things he might have said. However, at the moment I’m agnostic on the idea he’s an atheist, leaning toward “I don’t think so.”

Of course, but Trump lost in 2020 when he wasn’t a convicted felon. I’m hoping a bit of his support at the margins will erode among swing voters, improving Biden’s margins, and perhaps the threat of another Trump presidency will keep some swing voters in Biden’s column instead of voting third party, like many did in 2016.

The GOP more or less take it for granted that DJT will lose the popular vote. Their strategy is to create enough electoral chaos that the vote goes to the House of State Delegations, where they have a majority.

That is the threat that we have to take seriously. Democrats need to win control of the House in 2024, then they need to count the electoral votes Biden won in the election, even if GOP controlled state legislatures certify false Trump electors. If SCOTUS tries to intervene, Congress and President Biden should tell them to fuck off, because the Constitution gives the Court no role in certifying electors. The fictional scenario of violence and chaos around the election in the TV series Succession is a very real possibility for 2024, and Democrats cannot allow the fascists to seize power because we are trying to play by rules they no longer recognize as legitimate.

Lawrence: What if Joe Biden is doing everything right in the debt ceiling negotiations?

Lawrence: What if Joe Biden is doing everything right in the debt ceiling negotiations?

Biden has earned my trust based on the last 2 years, his years as VP and much more. And, as Lawrence says, he and his staff likely know more than anyone else what is going on and how to negotiate. More so than idiots like me ;-) Or every pundit.

Lawrence suggests that Biden is not really negotiating for the debt ceiling. He has that in the bag. And McCarthy knows that. Biden is actually the one who is using the debt ceiling to leverage stuff. It is the new budget starting in Sept. Biden is focussed on. He is negotiating for that to prevent a government shutdown. By leveragng the debt ceiling negotiations.

Remember, if we do not have a new budger by Sept, we will be on the path for a total government shutdown unless Congress passes legislation. So we would be right back to being threatened by terrorists.

Is Biden working on that as well as the debt ceiling?

How about this? Would raising the debt ceiling until after the elections plus a 2024 budget that holds spending at 2023 levels be a victory? I think so. Some will not like it but getting two budget issues out of the way 18 months before the election will pay dividends. No more terrorism.

It destroys the GOP’s ability to wreak economic havoc with both the budget and the debt ceiling.

Use the 14th amendment here, and he might win but he would have to negotiate with an angry GOP in Sept over a budget that will shut down the government. They would not give an inch.

Thi way he might actually peel off some Republicans.

This makes a lot of sense. Biden has to think about more than just the issue today. Trust Dark Brandon.

The vote will be up to the current House…not the one elected in 2024.

It could get ugly because they will crack down with extreme prejudice on any protests if the GOP succeeds in overturning the popular vote.

That is not correct. The 119th Congress will convene on January 3, 2025, then on January 6, 2025, they will count the electoral vote for President. It is absolutely critical for the Democrats to win control of the House in 2024.

It probably seemed that way in 2021 because the Georgia Senate runoff was ongoing so the two lame duck GOP Senators from Georgia were still voting on January 6, but all of the incoming Congress people and Senators whose victories had already been certified were sworn in on January 3, 2021.

The new House was sworn in several days before January 6. Don’t you remember hearing about some of the new members who didn’t even know yet where the bathrooms were but they had to evacuate to secure rooms they’d never even heard of…

So yes, we need to win the house to discourage the GOP from repeating the coup they nearly succeeded with in 2020

This is a reason the criminal proceedings in Fulton County, Georgia are so important. If people go to prison for Trump’s false electors scheme, perhaps it will dissuade some Republicans from trying again when Trump loses in 2024.

The GOP more or less take it for granted that DJT will lose the popular vote. Their strategy is to create enough electoral chaos that the vote goes to the House of State Delegations, where they have a majority.

How about this scenario? (After some research. And this is simply first order modeling) The average shift to Democrats since the overturning of Roe has been 6%. If this held for the 2024 elections, we could pick up 39 Representaives in the House.. We could also pick up 8 Senators (And Cruz would lose), giving us 59.

And if this held up, Biden could easily win in PA (+7.2%), Michigan (8.8%) and Nevada (8.4%). He could easily win Georgia (6.2%), Arizona (6.3%) and Wisconsin (6.6%). But get this, he could win Florida (+2.7). And Texas could be a tossup (0.02%). That is an additional 67 EV. Biden could have 373 EV.

(I personally beleive that Biden and his campaign will make the shift greater than 6% in important races)

This is all very simple but it shows the effect that the Roe shift could have. I expect the GOP to try all sorts of high jinks but indications are that Trump would lose by a large number of votes. (The demographics show this would mostly come from women and the Millennial/Gen Z cohort)

MAGA Republicans coud try and just ignore the will of the people but I do not think that will be successful. At least I hope not.

So do I. But the Democrats have to prepare for a scenario in which GOP controlled legislatures void Biden victories as being due to “voter fraud” and award their electors to Trump, based on the “Independent state legislature” theory, regardless of how large a margin of victory Biden receives.

While the Roe-shift may be real, be careful of using averages.

The “shift” is not going to be uniform across the country.

And because of the anti-democratic nature of US governance, a population shift does not mean an immediate change in who is in office.

The 2024 election is still too far away.

Though from one of my dreams (and here I must repeat, my dreams *usually* do not come true), DeSantis is the nominee, he picks Gaetz as a running mate (probably to mollify the Trumpers), and wins.

But again, my dreams are sometimes just nightmares in disguise.

Of course, wingnut state legislatures did consider this in 2020. From what I’ve read, one thing that crossed PA goopers’ minds is the fact that they do not get anywhere near the physical security that POTUS does, if any, and anybody can find out where they live. Makes the ballot box/bullet box transition very real.

That is the plan they have working on since 2021 tanked.

The problem with DeSantis, Gaetz and even Trump is that the presidential candidate and the vice presidential candidate should not be from the same state, otherwise, electoral votes are lost for one candidate on the ballot, whether for the president or vice president. Apparently (according to the Trumpers) state legislatures can send whatever delegates they want to the Electoral College.

And besides, it’s nothing for a politician to move to fit into some other district. It’s an easy thing, done all the time. All Gaetz has to do is buy a house in Alabama and claim that is his residence.

I believe that on a technicality, the president and vice president are still the people who get the most and second-most votes in the Electoral College; however, the long-standing convention is that all electors vote for both people on the ticket, so that the two are tied, and then by unanimous agreement select the person listed as president to be president. If both people on the ticket are from the same state, only one of them can get their state’s electoral votes, which could theoretically result in someone else being elected vice president.

The unhinged New York City art professor who held a machete to a Post reporter’s throat after he knocked on her apartment door Tuesday morning is under investigation by the NYPD, according to police.

Shellyne Rodriguez could possibly face assault and other charges over the frightening altercation, which began inside her Bronx apartment building before she then chased two Post staffers in the street, according to law enforcement sources.

New York Post veteran Reuven Fenton and a photographer visited Rodriguez to inquire about a viral video from earlier this month in which she freaked out on pro-life students in an expletive-laced tirade at Hunter College, where she was employed as an adjunct.
After Fenton identified himself as a reporter, Rodriguez, 45, threatened to “chop” him up before she flung open the door and put the blade of the machete up to his neck, video shows.

“Get the f-k away from my door!” she yelled repeatedly before slamming the door in his face.

Any sane and rational proposal he brings to a vote will be rejected by the Freedumb Caucus as not extreme enough. Any extreme proposal he lets them stuff into a bill to make it palatable will get rejected by at least a few Republicans; not even all Freedumb Caucus members are on the same page when it comes to their far-right fringe wacko beliefs. Getting anything out of the House is a tall enough order, but literally nothing that comes out of there is going to get any traction in a Democrat-controlled Senate. McCarthy believes he holds all the cards in a debt ceiling “negotiation,” but it’s all bluster based on the Republicans’ ability to manipulate the media and public perception. When it comes to power, he has none, and he knows it.

Because it will benefit them. A lot of their calculus is “If we blow up the world economy, Biden and the Democrats will shoulder half, and possibly more, of the blame. because the American public will always both-sides any political issue.”

And they’re not wrong, give how stupid the American electorate can be. They’ll gain seats and possibly the presidency out of this one: “Biden ruined the economy because he wouldn’t negotiate with the GOP, all sides bad, throw all the bums out, durr hurr.”

Yep, Spielberg directed Duel. There was a TV episode he directed before that (The Name of the Game: “L.A. 2017”) which, as Spielberg said, opened the doors for him to direct Duel, which opened even more doors (The Sugarland Express, his feature film debut) and that ultimately got him the director’s gig on Jaws.

And of course, he directed one of the most well-known Columbo episodes, “Murder by the Book”.

Memories of Pitt in the mid 70s and U of Chicago in the late 70s when the disciples of Milton Friedman and the Big Sleaze himself gushed over the paradise the “Chicago Boys” were creating in Chile.

Truth is they fucking wrecked the whole country.

A new book from Princeton University Press documents how Milton and his Chicago Boys fucked Chile up.

In The Chile Project, Sebastian Edwards tells the remarkable story of how the neoliberal economic model—installed in Chile during the Pinochet dictatorship and deepened during three decades of left-of-center governments—came to an end in 2021, when Gabriel Boric, a young former student activist, was elected president, vowing that “If Chile was the cradle of neoliberalism, it will also be its grave.” More than a story about one Latin American country, The Chile Project is a behind-the-scenes history of the spread and consequences of the free-market thinking that dominated economic policymaking around the world in the second half of the twentieth century—but is now on the retreat.

In 1955, the U.S. State Department launched the “Chile Project” to train Chilean economists at the University of Chicago, home of the libertarian Milton Friedman. After General Augusto Pinochet overthrew socialist president Salvador Allende in 1973, Chile’s “Chicago Boys” implemented the purest neoliberal model in the world for the next seventeen years, undertaking a sweeping package of privatization and deregulation, creating a modern capitalist economy, and sparking talk of a “Chilean miracle.” But under the veneer of success, a profound dissatisfaction with the vast inequalities caused by neoliberalism was growing. In 2019, protests erupted throughout the country, and in 2022 Boric began his presidency with a clear mandate: to end neoliberalismo.

In telling the fascinating story of the Chicago Boys and Chile’s free-market revolution, The Chile Project provides an important new perspective on the history of neoliberalism and its global decline today.

re: #219 Nerdy Fish

I believe that on a technicality, the president and vice president are still the people who get the most and second-most votes in the Electoral College; however, the long-standing convention is that all electors vote for both people on the ticket, so that the two are tied, and then by unanimous agreement select the person listed as president to be president. If both people on the ticket are from the same state, only one of them can get their state’s electoral votes, which could theoretically result in someone else being elected vice president.

The XX Amendment makes the adjustment that the Vice-President candidate cannot be from the same state as the President candidate. The Vice-President cannot be someone who is ineligible to be President. It also separated the formal counting of the electoral votes, such that the second-most vote getter was no longer the Vice-President.

That amendment also moved the required single annual meeting of Congress from December to January (which eliminated a potentially stupid long lame duck session for the President).

It also notes that if the President-elect dies after the election but before the inauguration, the Vice-President-Elect is sworn in as President.

Black 11-year-old shot by Mississippi town’s ‘best officer’ responding to domestic dispute

Aderrien Murry was shot in the chest by an Indianola police officer early Saturday morning and placed in intensive care on a ventilator with a collapsed lung and other injuries, including fractured ribs and a lacerated liver, reported Mississippi Today.

“This cannot keep happening, this is not okay,” said the boy’s mother Nakala Murry during the press conference. “If a non-police officer was to shoot someone, you know it’s not okay. When the police do it, they have protocol. He was trained, he knows what to do.”

In fact, the officer who shot Aderrien was named the department’s “best officer,” according to the family’s attorney, who identified him as Greg Capers, although police haven’t released his name.

KPHO-TV, the CBS affiliate in Phoenix, reports, “In the filing, Maricopa County attorneys allege Lake’s claim regarding signature verification had ‘several demonstrably false statements intended to confuse the Court and expand the remand proceedings.’ She alleged Maricopa County officials failed to perform any higher-level signature verifications on ballots that had been flagged by lower-level screeners for any inconsistency…. Maricopa County officials also brought up the allegations Lake and her team have been echoing since her defeat to now-Gov. Katie Hobbs, calling the election ‘rigged.’”

DeSantis’ Campaign Aide Says She’s Confused by Star-Spangled Banner

thedailybeast.com

Ron DeSantis’ campaign teaser video featuring the Florida governor alongside a large U.S. flag seems to have triggered some confusion in the GOP. “America is worth the fight… Every. Single. Time,” Casey DeSantis, the governor’s wife, captioned the video shared on her Twitter account Tuesday. “That she is,” replied Chris LaCivita, a veteran Republican strategist and adviser to Donald Trump. “In the future maybe if you use [the flag] as a backdrop…have it positioned correctly,” LaCivita added, apparently upset that the stars appeared in the flag’s top right instead of top left. “The flag is in fact positioned correctly, considering that he is standing back stage in this shot,” DeSantis’ campaign aide and former press secretary Christina Pushaw hit back. She also asked about a pixelated image of the Star-Spangled Banner shared by LaCivita in his tweet. “Now I am curious about the meaning of this 15 star and 15 stripe flag,” Pushaw wrote. “Never seen it before. Does Liberia now have 14 colonies?” She wasn’t the only one who apparently didn’t recognize the flag that inspired America’s national anthem. “What is this flag with 15 stars?” GOP comms strategist and social media troll Matt Whitlock tweeted.

eadly “brain-eating” amoeba infections usually strike people in southern U.S. states, but thanks to climate change, the brain-invading organism has expanded its range northward. In light of this trend, the Ohio Public Health Association recently published a case report to raise awareness of the disease among health care providers in the state.

“Increased incidence of N. fowleri [a species of brain-eating amoeba] in northern climates is but one of many ways climate change threatens human health and merits novel education of health care providers,” the case report authors wrote in a paper published May 16 in the Ohio Journal of Public Health.

Naegleria fowleri is a single-cell organism that typically lives in soil and warm fresh water, as well as the occasional water tank, heater or pipe, according to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC). In rare instances, the amoeba can infiltrate the human brain and spinal cord by first entering a person’s nose — but it cannot reach the brain if swallowed in a gulp of water, for instance, and it doesn’t spread between people. N. fowleri causes an infection called primary amebic meningoencephalitis (PAM), which is nearly always fatal.

PAM is rare — since 1962, about zero to eight cases have been reported nationwide each year, the case report noted. Most of these infections have been linked to swimming in the South, particularly in Florida and Texas, but since 2010, cases have started to occur in more northern states, including the Midwestern states Minnesota, Kansas and Indiana.

‘Brain-eating’ amoebas are a new concern in northern US states, health officials advise (Live Science)

This reminds me of the sex ed section in my 9th grade biology class way back in 1963. I now understand that this was one of the most progressive and enlightened such programs in the entire country, and could probably not be presented anywhere in the USA now. Our teacher, a married lady in her 30s, was remarkably frank and humorous. This was the ideal formula for putting a crowd of nervous and ignorant 14 year olds at ease. In any case….

Kentucky man shot his roommate in retaliation for eating last Hot Pocket: police

abc12.com

LOUISVILLE, Kentucky (WLKY) — A man was shot over the weekend in Louisville, Ky., and police say it was over a Hot Pocket.

The Louisville Metro Police Department arrested 64-year-old Clifton Williams on Sunday after they said he shot his roommate following an argument in the Wyandotte neighborhood.

Police said that Williams’ roommate had eaten the last Hot Pocket, so he started throwing tiles at him.

Arrest slips say that the roommate tried to leave, but Williams went inside and got a gun. The man was then shot in the buttocks as he was trying to leave, according to police.

The victim traveled a few blocks to get help and was taken to University of Louisville Hospital to be treated for non-life-threatening injuries.

Williams is being charged with assault and has been ordered not to have contact with the victim. His bond was set at $7,500.

I suppose, on a technicality, there’s a world where you would pop smoke during a military drill. That seems a bit unnecessary, and I think that would also be described as “vehicles on the bridge are smoking” rather than, “the bridge is smoking.” The latter seems to indicate that there is a fundamental problem with the bridge itself, rather than with something driving across it.

Prosecutors fear this Jan. 6 conspiracy theorist will turn his trial ‘into a circus’

In late April, far-right conspiracy theorist Alan Hostetter — who formerly served as police chief of La Habra, California but now works as a yoga instructor — pleaded “not guilty” to federal conspiracy charges he is facing in connection with the January 6, 2021 insurrection.

U.S. Department of Justice (DOJ) prosecutors don’t believe that Hostetter actually entered the U.S. Capitol Building that day, but allege that he was part of the overall conspiracy to prevent Congress from certifying now-President Joe Biden’s Electoral College victory.

Russell Taylor, one of Hostetter’s co-defendants in the case, has pled guilty and is looking at four to seven years in federal prison. The other co-defendants, all Southern California residents, are alleged militia members Felipe Antonio Martinez, Erik Scott Warner, Ronald Mele and Derek Kinnison.

While Taylor has agreed to cooperate with prosecutors, Hostetter maintains that he did nothing wrong on January 6, 2021 and plans to act as his own attorney in court. Hostetter has been promoting conspiracy theories in his motions. And federal prosecutors, according to the Orange County Register, fear that Hostetter will “make the trial into a circus” and create “the type of sideshow the United States is seeking to prevent.”

Hostetter, the Register reports, has waived his right to a trial by jury but plans to plead his case in front of a federal judge.

Prosecutors said of Hostetter, “It is a disorganized and purposeless journey through the history of 20th- and 21st-Century conspiracy theories.” A federal judge told Hostetter, “I strongly urge you not to try to represent yourself” in court, but the former La Habra police chief insists on doing it anyway.

La Habra is in northern Orange County south of Los Angeles. These days, California is heavily Democratic, but during the 1970s and 1980s, it was still a red state. And Orange County was known for being a bastion of conservative GOP politics.

re: #186 No Malarkey!

Again, the problem is the EC can hand the election to the loser, without any shenanigans. After all, when red and reddish states change rules to disenfranchise voters (as Georgia and Texas have done), a candidate can lose a state outright. As I’ve repeatedly said, someone can win 65% of the vote but lose the EC (probably won’t happen but it’s theoretically possible).

Mentioned this before, but I used to drive by Four Season Landscaping when I was working in Bucks County, PA and I was avoiding traffic jams on I-95 South through Philly.

Once you see that neighborhood in person, Giuliani having that press conference there becomes even more laughable. Very industrial and quasi-bleak, although there’s a really good BBQ place about 300 yards north of Four Seasons.

So do I. But the Democrats have to prepare for a scenario in which GOP controlled legislatures void Biden victories as being due to “voter fraud” and award their electors to Trump, based on the “Independent state legislature” theory, regardless of how large a margin of victory Biden receives.

Absolutely be prepared. Lots of time and it will require fierce opposition. But we are in the middle of the transition to a new politcal party system where the parties are remade into the forms best able to win elections.

The GOP is in the position of the Whigs, disintegrating through ts own inability to govern. They will continue to make stupid mistakes. They are not smart. I can guarantee the Supreme Court will make some decisions that rile up people even more. And state legislatures in Red states will continue to go too fat.

Indian wrestlers hold candlelight march demanding arrest of sports official for sexual abuse (Arab News, Riyadh, today)

NEW DELHI: India’s top female wrestlers led a candlelight march of nearly 1,000 protesters in the capital on Tuesday demanding the resignation and arrest of the president of the wrestling federation for allegedly sexually harassing young athletes, one of whom was a minor.
Carrying India’s national flag, they marched to India Gate, a monument close to the country’s parliament building. A strong presence of police accompanied them on the marching route.
The protesters have been staging a protest in the center of New Delhi for nearly a month, amid a brutal heat wave, while foregoing their training schedules. Two Olympics medalists, Bajrang Punia and Sakshi Malik, are part of the protests and have threatened to hand back their medals if no action is taken against Wrestling Federation of India president Brij Bhushan Sharan Singh.
The protests have grown with many members of opposition parties and farmer unions taking up the wrestlers’ cause. Most of the Indian wrestlers come from the northern agricultural states of Haryana and Punjab.
They accused Singh, a 66-year-old powerful lawmaker representing the ruling Hindu nationalist Bharatiya Janata Party, of sexually harassing seven young female wrestlers.
Singh has denied the accusations and called the protests “politically motivated” by the opposition Congress party.
Vinesh Phogat, who has won wrestling medals at the world championships, Commonwealth Games and Asian Games, claimed in January that several coaches have exploited female wrestlers at the behest of the WFI president.

I agree. It was a thought experiment to see how things might shift with an activated population. The real world will be much different. But it is nice to see that there is a possible chance that Biden could win in such a large landslide that nothing the GOP does would help them.

It is my dream

—I simply do not see how DeSantis could get more votes than Trump did in a general election. He has zero charisma, polls show people under 50 and minorities do not like him (Millennials and Gen Z will represent 44% of the voting public) and he will not bring in people who belong to the Trump cult. Biden would eat him alive in a debate.—

The Republican Party is kind of in a “damned if you do, damned if you don’t” position right now. If Trump is the nominee, as all current indications suggest, they lose a metric fuck-ton of down-ballot races, and probably still lose the Presidency as well; they secure the votes of their revolting base, but literally all of the “independent” or “undecided” voters will most likely break Democratic. If they don’t run Trump out as the nominee, they lose the MAGA base; Trump will never endorse another candidate when he could be the nominee instead, and the party fractures and destroys itself while Democrats sweep almost everything.

ps

it’ll take more than a state just ‘declaring’ an election as fraudulent or voided.
it’s not automatic

there will be instant lawsuits
there’s a process
it will involve courts and judges
some state, some federal
and likely expedited time tables
some will be evidence based - they’re gonna have to prove fraud, not just ‘believe’ it
some may question the state usurpation laws that they’re relying on

judge / jurisdiction shopping won’t be easy
they cant run to Kacsmaryk in Amarillo

that we’re even having this conversation - oh yeah, be prepared.
that the R’s of a state can just declare an election void cause they passed a law and now they ‘say so’ - not quite so cut and dried

Facial hair changes the shape of the face, just like regular hair. That can cause people to think the person looks older than if they don’t have it. And most men can’t really grow facial hair fully until they are in their 20s, so it’s partially a psychological thing.

Gainesville pastor facing child abuse, sex assault charges after SWAT raid (Gainesville Sun, yesterday)

The founder and pastor of a Gainesville church was arrested Tuesday morning and charged with aggravated child abuse, according to an Alachua County Sheriff’s Office.

Court records show that the church leader has four open cases pending against him and that he faces at least 11 counts of sexual assault. It’s unclear how many victims there may be.

Here’s what we know:
Who has been charged?

Lorenzo Lee Crawford, 54, founder of the Christian Coalition Family Church, located at 7501 SW 75th St. in Gainesville.

More:University of Florida suspends research study that resulted in dogs’ deaths

More:Judge hears arguments against sheriff, employees in trio of lawsuits
The investigation

The initial investigation was spurred by a “juvenile victim who notified a family member that another juvenile church member had confided in them that they had been sexually abused by a member of the church,” the sheriff’s office posted on social media.

The victim’s family member informed Crawford of the alleged conduct, who then asked to speak with the victim alone. Crawford then “scolded the juvenile about ‘minding their own business,” investigators said.

Law enforcement officers say that Crawford ordered the victim to drop to their knees and take down their pants before beating them with a belt. The beating caused “significant bleeding” and, four months later, the victim still had “significant markings,” officials wrote.

A bench warrant was issued for Crawford’s arrest on May 19.
Bond

Crawford’s bond for all charges is set at $1.5 million, according to the Alachua County Jail.

A new short by Alex Gorosh (previously) and Wylie Overstreet (previously) helps to visualize the immensity of cosmic creation beyond the clock and calendar. Four years in the making, “To Scale: TIME” takes the filmmakers to a 4.3-mile stretch across the arid Mojave Desert, where they install small lights to create a timeline of human civilization and the broader universe. Augmented with visuals of galaxies and historical events, the resulting work captures the magnitude of 13.8 billion years and is an awe-inspiring reminder of how small humans are in both time and space.

Florida Man Caught With AK-47 at a Preschool Said He Was Headed to CIA

thedailybeast.com

A 32-year-old Florida man was arrested in Virginia on Tuesday after police said they caught him trespassing at a preschool with an AK-47 in his vehicle. The man, identified as Eric Sandow, allegedly told officers who approached him at Dolley Madison Preschool in McLean that he was on his way to the CIA. The agency’s headquarters are about a mile away from the school. A subsequent search of his vehicle turned up the AK-47 and a handgun, according to Fairfax County Police. He is now charged with felony possession of a firearm on school property.

See? Gun-free zones work. Had he only been there casing the joint with no weapons, the best they could have done is eject him for trespassing. Now he enters the Find Out stage and will enjoy the hospitality of Fairfax County’s Greybar Hotel.

Tell us you’re a fox “news” viewer without telling us you watch fox “news”

That guy would be A-OK with it if the guy had a ‘Murican AR-15.

How did we get from “Taxation without representation is tyranny” to “Taxation is tyranny?”

Because for the white privileged male class anything which attempts to restrict them in any way is tyranny by default.

re: #443 lawhawk

I’d like to be clean shaven, but hate what it does to my face with breakouts no matter what routine I go with, so I end up letting it grow out a few days and shave 1-2 times a week or less if I don’t have family events.

When I let the beard go, I age 10-15 years as I get salt n’pepper, while my head of hair is still dark brown. Glad I take after dad for that…

Grew a beard in ‘78. Bad acne. Had it ever since (the beard). Ranged over the years from about 3mm to 9.

Head of hair? Hah! Not since the ’90s

Both of them should resign. I was astonished that the Texas House actually impeached Paxton.
