That’s the Grimm Brothers version. The original inspiration for the story was published in the early 1600s.

Watch Live: Texas House to vote on Attorney General Ken Paxton impeachment

Just started a bit ago. Never thought I wuld see the day.

Let’s see if he actually faces justice or if the GOP once again supports their own and allows any crime they commit to remain unpunished.

@PatrickSvitek

The reason, as I understand it, this impeachment is happening is because Paxton paid a settlement of $3.5 million. With taxpayer dollars. Which needs to be approved by the legislature. Which would make them all complicit in his crimes.

re: #6 Hecuba’s daughter

Let’s see if he actually faces justice or if the GOP once again supports their own and allows any crime they commit to remain unpunished.

I think enough Republicans will vote for impeachment because they do not want to explain to their voters why it is okay to pay for Paxton’s settlement of a case for $3.5 million using their taxpayer dollars. And, under Texas law, if he is impeached he is removed from office until the Senate vote on conviction is complete.

Of course, that would be the smart thing to do. So it is very likely that the GOP will do something very stupid.

“Just let us know next time. You’re free to go.”

Very likely. But it not only gives the Dems an issue on corruption, the underlying point is that the GOP would agree that he can spend taxpayer money to settle his personal lawsuits. That might have some impact on the next election. The Dems only need to pick up 15 seats (out of 150) to get control. Not likely but who knows.

As one of the Republicans said, if he had not settled a lawsuit for $3.5 million using taxpayer money, he would not be under possible impeachment. That may have been too far as they do not want to explain how they accepted his corrupt use of taxpayer dollars.

Will it be enough to make a difference? He is impeached if about 15 Republicans Out of about 85) along with all the Dems vote that way. Will be interesting.

There have been reports that the Russian military occupying the ZNPP nuclear facility have been screwing with things like the connection to the power network, emergency failsafe mechanisms, support staff, and explosive placed throughout the facility.

Not sure what the HUR knows and whether there are definite Russian plans; A warning by the Ukrainians that the Russian occupation is getting close to the line of a major screwup; Or just a this is the Russians and not Ukraine statement.

Ukraine’s military intelligence reported on May 26 that Russian occupying forces at the Zaporizhzhia Nuclear Power Plant were preparing a large-scale provocation “in the next few hours.”

“To achieve this, a strike will be carried out directly on the territory of the plant. Afterward, an announcement will be made about a catastrophic release of radioactive substances. Ukraine will naturally be blamed for the incident,” the statement read.

According to military intelligence, Russian forces deliberately disrupted the scheduled staff rotation of the permanent monitoring mission of the International Atomic Energy Agency (IAEA) on May 26 “to conceal their (planned) actions as best as possible.”

Does this mean that the lgf interface, for what ever device you use, not display the content of referenced tweet?

If so, is the preferred remediation that we should post the contents of the referenced tweet as text in a blockquote block?

And, if so, how about other social media, such as Mastodon? Are there issues posters need to address?

I don’t want to make any requests. Most Mastodon posts look fine. I’m on a Window 11 laptop that I recently acquired used from the local U. It welcomes Bobby when I turn it on. Let me know if I start (or have started) to sound like Bobby. I don’t know why tweets show less now. I was mostly blaming Twitter, but realizing it could be just me.

There is no remediation for twitter, unless eelon sold it to Charles for a nickel, and gave him a stipend to work on it a while. I don’t get images from tweets, nor users Icons, nor videos. Text alone shows up, so far as I can tell. Sometimes I see who the original tweeter is, and if I enjoyed their stuff before, I click to see it now.

No worry about requests.

You’re a member of the lgf tribe and one of the folks I post for. If you, and others, cannot read what I post, my posting becomes kind of pointless.

I also occasionally have cases where a post doesn’t fully resolve. In those cases I have found that clicking the post’s “reload button” (rightmost button) often helps display the contents of tweets.

You also might, if the University permits it, see if someone can help you tune the laptop. Which might include removing unwanted startup apps, freeing up ram, and cleaning up disks. And might include seeing if the motherboard might take more ram and whether a faster/larger hard drive might be put in. Etc…

If you’re seeing only the text of tweets, this means that something is blocking the Javascript code that turns those elements into rendered tweets. There are lots of possible reasons for this, but check your browser settings and make sure you don’t have Javascript disabled.

I had a similar problem when I was using an old Mac Pro. Suddenly tweets stopped being rendered properly and I could only see the text. In that case it turned out to be a different issue; one of the browser certificates that authenticates websites had expired and there was no replacement because the computer was too ancient. So that’s another possibility to check out if you can.

I still don’t understand how Mastadon works. I guess newsie.social is an aggregation of news and information sites? Were they requested to kick Newsmax off when they were discovered? Does other news sites like the Texas Observer leaving and starting their own “instance” simply fragment news there more, making everything harder to find than it already is? Does starting your own “instance” cost you even more money if you have to set up your own servers?

If it wasn’t for the douchecanoe at the top of Twitter, that service worked so much better to find things there.

Paxton and Jan. 6:

“…The Travis County district attorney on Thursday found that Attorney General Ken Paxton violated the state’s open records law by not turning over his communications from last January when he visited Washington, D.C., for a pro-Trump rally that preceded the Jan. 6, 2021, attack on the U.S. Capitol.

The district attorney’s office gave Paxton four days to turn over the documents or face a lawsuit. The action was prompted by a Jan. 4, 2022, complaint by the top editors at five of the state’s largest newspapers: the Austin American-Statesman, The Dallas Morning News, the Fort Worth Star-Telegram, the Houston Chronicle and the San Antonio Express-News. The journalists argued that Paxton was withholding communications from the days surrounding Paxton’s trip to Washington last year that are subject to public release under the state’s open records law.”

They discriminate against more than LGBT+ people.

Unless you sign their statement of faith affirming an evangelical form of Christianity, you can’t work for them either.

Catholics are out because you have to affirm the Bible is exactly sixty-six books.

Atheists, Muslims, Jews, Hindus, &c are out because you have to affirm faith in God and Jesus the way they describe them.

They have a whole list of “so you want to be a volunteer, here’s our wingnut rules” on their application.

If this place takes federal money, they are in violation of the law. I don’t know about state money rules for Kentucky.

You don’t see any of the faith affirmation stuff on their main Website. You only get hit with that on the application form.

I think that they’ll impeach and remove him. I think that Ron is talking about the voters/MAGA crazies. I don’t think they’d be meeting on the Saturday of memorial day weekend if they weren’t planning on getting rid of him.

I agree with this take: Paxton seems to have (finally) crossed a line with the TX GOP - he’s become a potential financial liability - money, of course, being the main thing they care about - and for all the Sturm und Drang the crooked asshole seems to trying to generate, my guess is that by Election Day next year, Trump (and probably everybody else) will be all like “Ken who???”

Just as pure uninvited advice, what I think they should do is have both the Republican and Democratic caucuses get together and agree to make Paxton’s impeachment unanimous, and rig up a deal with their counterparts in the State Senate to do likewise, so that all parties (and Parties) can adjourn (IIRC, the Lege is running down its session) with a “win” against “corruption” to be self-congratulatory about.

The reason, as I understand it, this impeachment is happening is because Paxton paid a settlement of $3.5 million. With taxpayer dollars. Which needs to be approved by the legislature. Which would make them all complicit in his crimes.

I think he asked to use taxpayer dollars and was denied. The fact that he even asked is cause for removal in my opinion.

State Farm will no longer sell new homeowner and property insurance policies in California, citing the state’s wildfire risk and construction costs outpacing inflation.

As of Saturday, the agency will cease accepting new applications, including all business and personal lines property and casualty insurance, it said. State Farm added the decision does not impact personal auto insurance.

“State Farm General Insurance Company made this decision due to historic increases in construction costs outpacing inflation, rapidly growing catastrophe exposure, and a challenging reinsurance market,” the company said in a statement. “We take seriously our responsibility to manage risk. We recognize the Governor’s administration, legislators, and the California Department of Insurance (CDI) for their wildfire loss mitigation efforts. We pledge to work constructively with the CDI and policymakers to help build market capacity in California. However, it’s necessary to take these actions now to improve the company’s financial strength.”

I’m sure I’ve said this before, but the conservative movement today is the outgrowth of neo-conservatism from 1950’s-early 1960’s. And the reason they scream about liberals being commies and socialists is because their playbook actually comes mainly from Irving Kristol, who in his younger days was a Trotskyite, so blistering wars between Trotskyite Marxists and Stalinist Marxists would have been common and perennial. That tendency to use bitter, hyperbolic rhetoric to attack people (liberals) who historically are, with conservatives, considered political moderates on the scale of ideologies is very much an outgrowth of communist/fascist intranecine street wars.

Dude, this isn’t even accurate in it’s characterization of who participated in “street wars” and the broader point is just silly when we can’t actually look at the rhetorical structures of the past century and a half and see the continuity from mocking “waving the bloody shirt” to the current day.

Trotskyist? This is lineage of rhetoric that goes back to the South and has been a consistent feature of this country since the Civil War: it’s Klan conspiracy theories and Father Coughlin. It’s the shit Southern Democrats have said right up until they became Republicans.

re: #126 Nerdy Fish

Quoth Mrs. Fish: “When even the Republicans have had enough of your shenanigannery, you know you’re corrupt as shit.”

Paxton fired four (4!) of his Division Heads, who were, like, the 3rd, 4th, 5th, and 6th people on the Org Chart. They had the temerity to question some of his Directives, and warned him there was going to be trouble.

So he fired them all and they sued Paxton. Then came Discovery where the 4 guys and a bunch of other people came forward and were deposed, many, many under oath and subject to perjury, More back and forth followed and the AGs office offered the Whistleblowers $3.3 million bongo buckaroos to settle the suit. So Paxton came to the Lege to ask that it be paid, Stetson in hand, in a Supplementary Budget item. Members of the Lege asked to see the evidence turned over in Discovery which led to the Settlement Offer, made by Paxton.

He gave it to them and they read it. Damning stuff. So they opened an Investigation of their own.

Paxton was indicted for Securities Fraud before he was elected AG. He sued the Obama Admin at every to turn, left Tfg alone, and sued Biden at every turn. He was also on odious bucket of rotting offal who treated everybody like dogshit.
