About those kinds of reports: we have to account for many nations not having the ability to track causes of death sufficiently, or do not like to make things public (see PRC.)

We also have to account for Republican-run states or counties deliberately suppressing information about Covid-19 illness and deaths.

Unless they’re burning bodies or bulldozing them into mass graves, the total death count will tell us what’s up.

Not sure that’s necessary: wasn’t it Florida* that decided to deal with the excess mortality from COVID by simply refusing (on state orders) to put it down as an official “cause of death”?

That’s my point. Looking at total deaths, they can’t hide the additional deaths over the expected baseline by lying about the cause.

A Convention of States is a bad idea because they don’t just want to amend the Constitution, they want to rewrite it. All this talk of fixing “what the Founders intended” is just that - they want to redo the whole goddamn thing to be a religious document from the top to the bottom.

And besides (not that historical factuality means anything to assclowns like Santorum), the whole idea behind crafting the Constitution they came up with in 1787 was because having the States “at the top of food chain” led to a “United States” that was a virtually ungovernable conglomerate of squabbling mini-republics (maybe a quick wiki on the “Articles of Confederation” would give Rick a clue*). For all the flaws the US Constitution has -it’s still proved a pretty durable and effective framework to govern the country: and it’s a sure bet that any “improvements” that today’s RWNJs might come up are certain to be negative ones….

675,000 - 1918 The Spanish Flu
405,399 - WW2

The historical deaths are misleading without a comparison to the population.
Almost 500,000 Americans died in the Civil War when our population was 31,429,000; i.e. 1/10 of our current population.

The 675,000 deaths from the Spanish Flu were from a population of about 103,000,000 — less than a third of the current population. It would be equivalent to about 2.1 million deaths from COVID, or about twice as lethal. However, what is very strange is that the estimated worldwide deaths from the Spanish Flu were 50 million (equivalent to 220 million deaths today) while the comparable figure for COVID is about 7 million. There has to be some other reason for the disparity of impact on the United States vs worldwide. Unreliable figures for 1918? Unreliable counts now? Unreliable in both instances? The different age distribution for the diseases? Spanish flu was particularly lethal to the young and healthy while COVID targets the elderly and the infirm.

They are also fantastic cookers, if you put in the effort to learn how to use them. It’s a rather complex learning curve. Once you get it down, they are lovely machines.

It’s only a suspension because she refused to cooperate with the investigation, not her whackadoodle ideas about vaccines and magnetism or vaccines and 5G towers. One of the board members told her that in exchange for licensure, she had to cooperate in an investigation when there are complaints about her. And there are 350 complaints.

Presumably, she could get her license back at least temporarily if she cooperated with the investigation, but I don’t see the board being all that excited about her vaccine beliefs or (and I’m quoting this, it’s completely crazy):

the claim that major metro areas are “liquifying dead bodies and pouring them into the water supply.”

cleveland.com

This probably works better for the state—“we didn’t examine her beliefs, we acted on the fact that she didn’t follow the rules regarding investigations and suspended her license. She can get it back if” (and list reasons). Having a “full court” for Tenpenny’s nonsense would not be helpful, IMO.

Unreliable in both instances but for very different reasons. In 1918 much of the World had been destabilized by WWI and there just wasn’t anything comparable in terms of modern medical testing, surveillance capability and data gathering. Today it’s entirely politically and economically driven. My go to analogy for the entire depraved response to COVID has always been Chernobyl, because it fits on several levels:

1. A threat that grew out of an exponential equation.
2. Infrastructure designed to contain the threat built around compromised standards, that lacked critical safety features and redundancies.
3. Authoritarian political administrations in many places whose primary drive was to maintain the status quo and were incapable of admitting weakness or error.
4. An utterly pathological mindset across those same administrations that had no problem with the concept of using “human robots” as an ablative asset to get through the crisis.
5. Information channels usually owned and operated by the same self-centered myopic powerful interests whose decisions exacerbated the crisis at every turn.

She may be talking about liquid cremation.
People are upset about it, and it’s banned in a lot of places because people freak out about it going down into the sewer and winding up in the water supply after being treated with sewage.

They shouldn’t freak out over this, or should be entirely freaked out at all times, because when a body is drained for embalming, the blood and fluids go down the drain.

Back in the relative safety of the Megalopolex after my excursion to Lubbock. It was hotter than the hinges of hell there, but no worse than Weatherford. The flight out was already a little bumpy from thermals at 7AM, and the flight back considerably worse. Visibility was perfect except for the usual haze of fine dust right on the ground. Really needed my prescription trifocal shades. The endless checkerboard of irrigated cotton fields stretches literally to the horizon (140 miles from 10,000 feet, give or take). It is a sight not to be missed. It is really an artificial construct, a gigantic factory shaped and molded from the ground itself, and does not seem part of the natural world at all.

so just unpacking some not so random thoughts….

Since we’ve observed over the past decade or so that every accusation from the RW appears to be based on projection of their own misdeeds.

Since the Conservatives have been crowing since the Nixon Administration that there’s a vast liberal conspiracy in the media that is slanted against them; it only stands to reason then that there IS a vast conspiracy against liberals. When I look at AM radio, the decline of independent journalism, the slant of multiple networks that exist on cable and streaming that cater specifically to conservative and even evangelical christian POV’s, it’s readily apparent where the actual media bias lies. Hell, Twitter evolved into an effective waypoint for journos to get their thoughts out there, disaffected groups to find support and share information. As soon as it became a tool liberals used to circumvent the media, it’s bought by a RW troll and effectively trashed.

I’ll get off my shine box for now and straighten out my tinfoil hat….

No tinfoil detected. See also the Powell memo, where the right proposed a long march through the US institutions in response to a supposed prior lefty takeover of them.

Of course there was no such lefty takeover of the institutions. Instead, back then (as now), reality simply doesn’t agree with wingnut views.

However, the right’s march through the institutions has been very real. For example, the mainstream media is apparently paralyzed by the offered choice between a center-right slow death and a fascist hard right quick death, leaving remarkably little attention left over for any ideas that might actually help. We have a gilded age v2.0 without the muckrakers, and it will not end well.

As another example, many mainstream Christian denominations are utterly under enemy control, so much so that they call putting saw blade booby traps in the Rio Grande “Christian”. I like to think all these hypocrites have earned themselves an eternity spent hip-deep in molten lead.

Anti-corruption Ecuadorian presidential candidate assassinated at campaign event

QUITO, Ecuador (AP) — An Ecuadorian presidential candidate known for speaking up against cartels and corruption was shot and killed Wednesday at a political rally in the capital, amid a startling wave of gang-driven violence in the South American country.

President Guillermo Lasso confirmed the assassination of Fernando Villavicencio and suggested organized crime was behind his slaying, less than two weeks before the Aug. 20 presidential election.

“I assure you that this crime will not go unpunished,” Lasso said in a statement. “Organized crime has gone too far, but they will feel the full weight of the law.”

A man who posted violent threats against President Joe Biden and other officials online was shot dead during an FBI raid on Wednesday.

Agents were attempting to serve an arrest warrant on Craig Robertson at his home in Utah, just hours ahead of a planned visit to the state by Mr Biden.

A criminal complaint said Robertson posted threats on Facebook against Mr Biden and a prosecutor pursuing criminal charges against Donald Trump.

The far bigger problem was the show runners starting Moffat. Almost as much damage as Berman/Braga did to Star Trek. (Coto almost salvaged Enterprise but too much damage was already done.) Hopefully Dr Who has the momentum to overcome that damage.

No, Jodie Whitaker and the female Doctor didn’t do irreparable damage. She was a good Doctor. The writing was weak. While what’s his name could do a great intimate series like Broadchurch, he couldn’t do a Universe the size of Doctor Who.

So, in legal filings there’s often interesting stuff found in the footnotes.

Trump’s prosecution cases are no exception, and he produces a ton of filings and motions. There was one particular filing made by prosecutors that has gotten a lot of interest because prosecutors and a judge initially suggested Trump was a flight risk before the prosecutors withdrew that as an issue (for reasons currently unknown) and the judge relied on other grounds to issue the substantive ruling.

“The government later acknowledged, however, that it had ‘errantly included flight from prosecution as a predicate’ in its application,” the carefully worded footnote continued. “The district court did not rely on risk of flight in its ultimate analysis.”

There’s no indication that Howell ever withdrew her finding.

The D.C. Court said that Howell simply leaned on other reasons for upholding a non-disclosure order for Twitter, like giving Trump “an opportunity to destroy evidence, change patterns of behavior” or “notify confederates.”

Right wingers are hanging their hats on this footnote as proof of something, despite the fact that Trump has actually mused about moving to France to get away from it all…

We also don’t know what other evidence prosecutors had on Trump and his coconspirators in this and related trials that might suggest fleeing from the US and criminal prosecutions here.

Remember River explaining that there are rules and she knew all the Doctor’s faces — until she learned that, “oops”, Capaldi was the Doctor. They had to ditch the number of reincarnations if they wanted the series to continue. But was not a fan of how they did it.

Tennant is coming back for a few episodes, not a series in Dr. Who. That’s because Ncuti Gatwa, who was playing the successor Doctor to Jodie Whitaker had conflicts shooting the show. Tennant subs in for the 60th special and a couple additional episodes.

Whitaker’s Doctor suffered from writing issues and I think it was because they had it overladen with too many companions at the same time (Yaz, Graham, and Ryan). They should have gone with just Yaz and one of the two. It would have resulted in tighter writing and more character development instead of splitting time. After Graham and Ryan left the show, Yaz and Dan were a good mix and there was better chemistry while the writing chugged along.

YMMV

I was annoyed with Tennant not showing up for “Time of the Angels” since it was clear that he should have been the doctor in that episode, given the dialog in “Silence in the Library”.

Three companions have always been too many. The Nyssa, Teagan, Adric episodes had the same problem.

Not that I have the least amount of sympathy for the late Mr. Robertson: it sounds like he (finally) got a hard lesson in FO after an awful lot of FA- BUT: I am curious to know exactly what happened with that FBI shootout. And contrary to TV depictions, I believe G-men actually having to use their weapons is a fairly uncommon occurrence. Most of the media reports I’ve read simply repeat the basic story (though some in the blogosphere have livened up the coverage with screenshots of Craig Robertson’s deranged, bloodthirsty social-media postings: sick stuff) - but I wonder what actually went down? I’m guessing that he probably shot at (or drew on) the FBI agents, and got well-ventilated for his pains, but so far, no details have (AFAICT) been released.

I also think that having some sort of details on the *actual* events is important (neverminding, for the moment, that the FBI has its own issues with credibility), as it’s a certainty that the RWNJ media is going to try to make this guy into some kind of martyr.

Excellent piece on Talking Points Memo about the freak who died in a shootout with FBI agents, after they came for him because he was yammering on social media about going on an assassination spree.

And yeah, he’s exactly what you figured he’d be:

What’s notable about the complaint is how many of Robertson’s threats and complaints mirror standard GOP talking points from Capitol Hill. He refers to the FBI visits in response to his threats to murder Alvin Bragg and President Biden as an example of “the WEAPONIZED FBI coming after a 75 year old conservative,” and he makes general complaints about the FBI monitoring conservative social media. He also criticizes Facebook for censoring his assassination threats. Of course, he walked around in a Trump hat and identified himself as a “MAGA TRUMPER,” which from the material noted above seems like a credible claim.
