NPS news release: Three national scenic trails designated as units of the National Park System

Three national scenic trails have become the country’s newest national parks, raising the total number of existing parks from 425 to 428. The Ice Age, New England, and North Country national scenic trails, all previously established by Congress and administered by the National Park Service as part of the National Trails System, are now also recognized as units of the National Park System.

Doubt much will change. I’ve done parts of Ice Age and North Country. Great trails. They join the Appalachian, Natchez Trace, and Potomac Heritage trails in the national park system.

Ice Age is about 1200 miles long and somehow stays entirely in Wisconsin. North Country is projected to be 4600 miles long (Appalachian Trail is “only” about 2200 miles long, so North Country takes a bit longer than needed for two Argentinian mistresses).

US retail lobbyists retract key claim on ‘organized’ retail crime

The NRF’s claim that organized retail crime accounted for “nearly half” of inventory losses was repeated in multiple media reports on the issue. The NRF has cited growing rates of crime in calls for Congress to pass new laws, including proposed legislation that would broaden the scope of offenses considered “organized” crime and increase potential penalties.

According to NRF spokesperson Danielle Inman, the claim that organized crime accounted for nearly half of all inventory losses was based on two-year-old testimony from Ben Dugan, former president of the advocacy group Coalition of Law Enforcement and Retail. In 2021, he told a U.S. Senate committee that organized retail crime accounted for $45 billion in annual losses for retailers, according to estimates by the coalition.

Kevin McCarthy shredded by his own hometown: ‘Not what we expect from our elected leaders’

Former House Speaker Kevin McCarthy isn’t very well liked, even by Republicans in his own hometown in California, according to a report.

McCarthy, who made history when he was booted out of the speakership after a remarkably short period of time, recently announced that he was leaving his seat at the end of the month. That is among the reasons given by locals in McCarthy’s hometown of Bakersfield who say they have negative feelings about their outgoing representative.

“How much did McCarthy love Bakersfield, and how much did Bakersfield love him back? The responses were mixed then, and they remain mixed now,” according to the Guardian, which included a quote from Greg Perrone, president of the Greater Bakersfield Republican Assembly, which the outlet describes as “an activist group that hews to McCarthy’s right.”

“If you went through the wringer he went through, I suspect there’s a little humiliation, a little embarrassment. Maybe he’s licking his wounds and wants to go off into the sunset,” he said, according to the report. “Still, I’m a little disappointed that he didn’t finish the term that he was elected to serve. That’s not what we expect from our elected leaders.”

The report continues:

“The critical voices that fill the letters column of the local paper, the Bakersfield Californian, have been quite a bit blunter. ‘Don’t let the door hit you on the way out, Kevin,’ two of them wrote last week. One added: ‘You haven’t represented us in a very long time.’”

The mayor apparently didn’t even have time to respond, according to the report.

“Bakersfield’s mayor, Karen Goh, who has been photographed with McCarthy on passingly few occasions since she took office seven years ago, issued no statement. When invited to comment on ways in which McCarthy had helped the city in his 16 years in Washington, she told the Guardian she was too busy to respond.”

There was a lot that was fucked up about the claim and the larger ecosystem it inhabited that I got into here, but the one thing I missed was how it’s just basic DARVO and served as a way of distracting people from the fact that wage theft dwarfs all other forms of theft:

According to the Economic Policy Institute, wage theft costs U.S. workers as much as $50 billion per year — a number far higher than all robberies, burglaries and motor vehicle thefts combined. While we’re taught to be vigilant and lock our homes and cars to prevent robberies, most workers are not trained on how to identify wage theft and claw back stolen wages. Wage theft is also more likely to affect low-wage workers, immigrant workers, and workers with less education and fewer resources.

During reorientation at the Kroger affiliate, one segment emphasized that we clerks are forbidden to chase, hold, or otherwise confront anyone suspected of shoplifting. They say it’s for our safety, and talk about weapons and hostile people. Here’s what really happened. A couple of employees are permitted to confront, follow, harass, and ‘threaten’ shoppers. The name of their department is Asset Protection, but I call them the shrinkage guys (they’ve all been men, that I know of). The ones where I work, last time I worked there, would follow shoppers of color in a cartoonish show of stealth that we observed from the deli. This included the Store Director, their supervisor, with a twisted enthusiasm. Shortly after I quit, they finally got in trouble, and got fired (or ‘put on some kind of leave’, as some ‘understood’ it.) This must have cost Kroger some money. That’s why we can’t accuse or follow shoppers. Lawsuits lurk.

Making the shoppers out to be the dangerous ones is a capitalist defense mechanism.

While I was typing that, I got a call from work. A shift closing tonight came available. I turned it down.

Remember this about pro sports contracts:
In Collective Bargaining, players get about 45-50% of revenues-depending upon the league. Add in that great players can help teams generate more revenue, and from a purely capitalistic POV, great players have a market value. While players aren’t the only ones that help make the money, they are the most front facing, and sport dependent, endure the most physically taxing career. While the large dollar amounts compared to the normal persons salary are a huge gap, they should not be paid less than what their labor is worth.

I did see the aftermath of a shoplifting, knowing who it was, sort of, and didn’t say that part when I threw away his old shoes and socks as he was walking around in fresh new ones, out of sight.

I saw a guy trying shoes on, who I only know as ‘Buster’ from a bus ride we took together 3 years ago. All the buses here have bike racks on the front, and I watched Buster load his at the bus stop. He was on his way to see his old girlfriend Punky, which would be two bus rides and then a bike ride to get to the town where she lived in a care facility of some sort. They used to live in this town, but got kicked out of their apartment because Buster fixed something that he couldn’t get the manager to fix, and that violated their rental agreement. I see Buster about every other month, around town. He lives in a tent south of downtown. Tough way to hang on to a bicycle, not to mention health and dry shoes.

I wasn’t suggesting that at all. AFAIC, this is between the player and team. If the team is willing to pay out that kind of coin, good for that player. As long as it doesn’t take money from me in the form of subsidies for new stadiums since I don’t go to games and pay the increased ticket prices, parking fees, and food and beverage costs. My only point was that salaries are how players rank themselves and they all believe they deserve to be king of the money pile.

re: #39 The Ghost of a Flea

The NRF is claiming this shit because retailers refuse to secure their own stores against theft. Our local Kroger affiliate has two security people who work overlapping hours, one is the department manager. This means that the store only has coverage for a little more than half of the time that it is open. Shoplifters around here know this and act accordingly. Theft in stores is out of control because retailers benefit from it.

I believe that the big retailers refuse to staff to deter theft because the executives want to pocket the ‘savings’, put the losses on consumers and dump the criminal violations on already overburdened courts. More cynically, out of control theft also gives conservatives a boost at the polls with voters who think that Republicans are better on crime than Democrats.

Which is a load of horse crap.

re: #55 wrenchwench

Yeah retail loss prevention goons are historically just awful people who want to be cops but can’t for reasons that nobody in management ever really wants to examine too closely.

While I was working in the deli, one of my coworkers applied for an opening as junior shrinkage guy. He got part way through the process before they told him he couldn’t do it, because something on his record needed to be at least three years old. He had already had the part where they explicitly tell you not to do what we saw them doing at least once a week. Wanton disregard for policy on the books. The Store Director, too. Foremost. I’m so glad he’s gone.

Having worked in retail I have heard my share of loss prevention stories. My favorite was when I was working at John Wanamaker. Someone had put aside enough kitchen appliances to start a household. Microwave, stand mixer and so on. The problem was the person who did this was fired before they could get the stuff out of the store. They were fired for taking a day’s worth of cash sales two months earlier.

Not to downplay the current situation, but the Canadian and American health care systems are very different beasts.

While we are struggling with some of the same issues they are, it’s not an equal comparison by any stretch.

Our healthcare system will be American before long. Every time a ‘conservative’ government gets into power they do a little damage to the system to make it worse.

When it falls apart they’ll blame ‘liberals’ and most people will believe them.

Also, this:

AUSTIN — Forty Texas companies and business leaders are entering the fight against Texas’ abortion ban, filing a brief with the Texas Supreme Court that argues the ”ambiguity” in the law’s medical exceptions cost the state an estimated $14.5 billion in lost revenue every year.

Austin-based dating app giant Bumble is leading the effort, submitting an amicus brief ahead of the high court’s arguments in Zurawski v. Texas. Lead plaintiff Amanda Zurawski is challenging the state’s abortion ban after she nearly died of sepsis due to a pregnancy complication. She says the Texas abortion ban’s medical exceptions are too vague, preventing her doctor from providing a medically necessary abortion until she had nearly died.

More of that conservative “Fiscal responsibility” we’ve heard so much about.

Rep. Nancy Mace (R-SC) and her longtime fiancé Patrick Bryant have reportedly called it quits. Bryant and Mace have called off their 18-month engagement and have since become locked in a messy fight over the two pricey properties they bought together, according to the Daily Mail, citing unnamed sources. The fight comes as Mace’s office bleeds staffers, in part because of her open discussion of her sex life among staff, according to the report. Mace was part of the eight Republicans who succeded in ousting former Speaker Kevin McCarthy, a vote that reportedly drove a rift between her and her chief of staff, who she ultimately fired.
