Ben Carson. Like a bad penny coming back around.

Dumbest smart person around. A true fachidiot. I swear the word was created with him in mind.

Ben Carson is a fine example of Heinlein’s observation that, “An expert is someone who knows more and more about less and less until finally they know everything about nothing at all.”

Regarding the crazy congresswoman from Georgia, though that dinosaur Tweet was fake, she does not “believe” in evolution.

Business Insider, June 11, 2021

On a podcast released earlier this week, Rep. Marjorie Taylor Greene said she doesn’t “believe in evolution.”

“I don’t believe in that type of so-called science,” Greene, who represents Georgia’s 14th congressional district, said.

Greene made the remarks on the “Real America’s Voice” podcast, hosted by Steve Bannon, ex-aide to former President Donald Trump.

Among scientists, evolution is considered to be an infallible theory, backed by comprehensive research and evidence. But several polls conducted in the last 15 years have found that the majority of Republicans do not believe evolution is real.

Business Insider gets the opinions of scientists wrong. No scientist considers the theory to be “infallible.” (Infallible is not even the correct word for what they’re trying to convey, that the theory cannot be unseated.) Scientific opinion consider it the best explanation for the diversity of life on Earth. That does not mean it can’t be unseated if a better explanation is proposed and tested.

And instead of calling out the blatant hypocrisy, the Beltway instead pretend that it’s Dems who fired the first shot and thus Repubs have every “right” to retaliate. Because that’s the only card in their deck: “Dems talked about doing X, so they can’t call out Repubs for doing Y.”

The word “believe” should be excised from any scientific discussion. Scientists do not believe in science. They support the best model that explains the existing data. And can deal with new data. And is falsifiable.

Come up with a newer model that does a better job explaining the data and scientists will support you. And all models have to be able to deal with new data. Or they will be changed.

And any scientific model must be falsifiable. Stating Last Thursdayism as a scientific model (ie everything was created in place by God last Thursday) is not valid as it cannot be shown to be wrong by ANY data.

We have models but none are fully satisfactory or lead to new problems or are easily separable from each other. So we need more data. Which has made the theories better over the years, opening up new areas for research.

So maybe one day we will have enough data to support an almost definitive theory. Maybe someday we will see a proton decay. Maybe someday we will observe dark matter. In many ways the search for a unified theory likely leads to more intereesting science than the actual theory itself.

I think you pretty much hit the high points. And belief is not part of any of those. A good theory/model leads to experiments and new data that can falsify it if it was wrong.

On science:

The only assumption that methodological naturalism, which is the epistemological foundation that science utilizes, relies upon is that reality exists, is objective, and can be understood by human observers

Evolutionary theory requires exactly the same faith as any other scientific theory… the “faith” that (a) our senses are not systematically trying to deceive us, and (b) the universe is, for the most part, comprehensible.

Everything else follows based on reason and evidence.

the core of science is not controlled experiment or mathematical modeling; it is intellectual honesty.

science/accumulated body of knowledge does only move in one direction regardless of what individual scientists / researchers may do - and regardless of what twisted and tortured ‘opposing opinions’ may be generated to appear ‘legitimate’ -what they are all doing is really substituting bad rhetoric for empirical proof. Because there is nothing to support their assertions.

in the long run the cream rises and the rest doesn’t.

The cream rises in descriptive science because it reflects and describes what works.

Tuberville parroting the “Zelensky stopped a church from meeting” b.s. he read in a Don Jr. tweet. More like trying to protect his country from a saboteur organization loyal to Putin.

“…Ukraine has long held valid concerns that the Moscow-affiliated Ukrainian Orthodox Church poses a security threat, and has instead promoted the Orthodox Church of Ukraine, which in 2019 was granted “autocephaly” or independence by the Patriarch of Constantinople, the symbolic “first among equals” of the world’s Orthodox churches.

The process was ratified in a ceremony in Istanbul (still referred to as Constantinople in Orthodox circles) on Orthodox Christmas Eve, 2019, when the Metropolitan of Kyiv, Epiphanus I, received Tomos from Bartholemew, the Ecumenical Patriarch of Constantinople.

It meant that for Constantinople, which adheres to a strict “one country, one church” principle, the Orthodox Church of Ukraine - loyal to Kyiv - was now the only canonical Ukrainian Orthodox church.

For Ukraine, it was a key moment, as it represented another step away from political, economic and religious subservience to Russia.

If you’ve ever queried a religious person about their beliefs and faith, particularly any variation of how various tenets of their religion can be “true” without verifiable proof, and been told that they don’t require proof to believe it’s true and thus their faith is based upon belief in absence of evidence…you know why they use the word “believe” when describing scientific theory/fact.

In shorter terms, it is the argument that “science believes X, religion believes Y, and since neither can be ‘proven,’ my religious beliefs are equally valid to your scientific beliefs.”

Misunderstandings generally stem from the inaccurate definition of terms and the inconsistent and misapplication of those definitions

the word belief has two definitions in this context

1 belief that - an assertion of generally accepted objective universal truth - such that there can actually be one

2 belief in - an assertion of faith where faith is belief without proof. it is by definition subjective, and the standards of evidence - in any other but a personally acceptable sense of the word, do not apply

while we could spend a lot of time fleshing these terms out more fully, it would not change the fundamental point. 1 is not 2

You are using 1. the other is using 2 as if it were 1

When you make a sweeping claim, you are expected to support your conclusions with multiple, independent pieces of evidence. Not merely dictate/demand they are so

Person with bird flu died in Mexico, WHO says
By Julie Steenhuysen and Adriana Barrera (Reuters, today)

June 5 (Reuters) - A person with prior health complications who had contracted bird flu died in Mexico in April and the source of exposure to the virus was unknown, the World Health Organization said on Wednesday.
WHO said the current risk of bird flu virus to the general population is low.
The 59-year-old resident of the State of Mexico had been hospitalized in Mexico City and died on April 24 after developing a fever, shortness of breath, diarrhea, nausea and general discomfort, WHO said.
“Although the source of exposure to the virus in this case is currently unknown, A(H5N2) viruses have been reported in poultry in Mexico,” WHO said in a statement.
It was the first laboratory-confirmed human case of infection with an influenza A(H5N2) virus globally and the first avian H5 virus reported in a person in Mexico, according to the WHO.
Scientists said the case is unrelated to the outbreak of H5N1 bird flu in the United States that has so far infected three dairy farm workers.

- - -

The victim had no history of exposure to poultry or other animals but had multiple underlying medical conditions and had been bedridden for three weeks, for other reasons, prior to the onset of acute symptoms, the WHO said.
Mexico’s health ministry said the person had chronic kidney disease and type 2 diabetes.

Rubio’s started here. I remember going to their place down at Mission Bay in San Diego, to get fish burritos. There was no chain, just a couple of outlets.

Then they blew up, became a chain.

And it all went down hill.

The lesson is obvious: stay in your lane.

If they had remained a local restaurant they’d probably have done fine.

But corporate America loves their franchises, even though such things are the empty face of American retail.

The UK is different than here.

Those already identifying with the Reform party may have been Tories at one time. They were UKIP prior, and before that the British (something) party.

Because of the Lordships and various titles that inhabit the House of Lords, the Tory party can continue with very old lords just sitting around, so the party will not officially end.

But it may be irrelevant to UK politics for a long time.

re: #49 Love-Child of Cassandra and Sisyphus

So back in 1984 I’d go down to Mission Bay and stop by the Rubio’s to get a fish burrito at least once a week.

It was fine. Not great cuisine, but good enough.

Lust for more money often ends badly. At least for those last to the party.

The original investors in the new corporation and franchises probably did well.

But after a while there is nothing special to fish tacos or fish burritos if everyone has them.

And usually inferior quality by all the copy cats.

A food stall survives on the cook/proprietor being a good cook.

When you have a franchise you have to make everything as uniform as possible. And some part-time minimum-wage burger flipper burrito roller is not going to set the world of cuisine on fire.

Reform UK is basically what it would be like if, instead of waging an insurgency within the party ranks, the “Tea Party” had instead chosen to run in 2010 as a full-fledged party and running candidates across the country in a transparent bid to kneecap the GQP. Their overall plan is not to win enough seats to be a legitimate party and actually govern, it’s to stage the political equivalent of a hostile takeover by arguing to whatever remains of the Conservative Party after July 4th that the “moderates” led them to ruin and the only way forward is to fully embrace far-right “populism” in all its sickly glory. The Sandhills Tropical Update.

La Niña conditions exist, which should cause an uptick in Atlantic tropical cyclones, whilst reducing the number of Pacific cyclones. La Niña conditions cause tropical monsoons to intensify over West Africa, which then truck out to sea as the seeds of long-track dangerous Atlantic hurricanes.

Currently there are no tropical cyclones or invests (tropical waves) anywhere in the world.

Satellite view of Africa and the Atlantic from MyFOXHurricane. There are a stream of thunderstorms moving off the African coast but all die before they get to the Lesser Antilles. Considering the excessive heat in the Atlantic and the favourable La Niña conditions, this is very unusual.

The Climate Prediction Center predicts an above-average Atlantic hurricane season. They have an explainer why that happens:

Impacts of El Niño and La Niña on the hurricane season

NOAA is forecasting a range of 17 to 25 total named storms (winds of 39 mph or higher). Of those, 8 to 13 are forecast to become hurricanes (winds of 74 mph or higher), including 4 to 7 major hurricanes (category 3, 4 or 5; with winds of 111 mph or higher). Forecasters have a 70% confidence in these ranges.

That can’t predict whether any of those storms strike land.

Do the Conservatives and UK Reform try to form a coalition government, dragging the Conservatives further right?

Remember that Brexit was conceived as a ploy by Michael Cameron of the Tories to kneecap the UKIP and Reformists by letting the people vote them down, but it backfired massively and the collateral damage resulting from it has hurt the Tory party nearly as badly as their own arrogance and incompetence.

Twas David Cameron who started this particular row of dominoes and then bailed as soon as his cunning plan backfired in his face. May totally mismanaged it to the point that she had to beg the DUP to form a government after the snap elections she called kneecapped the Tories something fierce. BoJo then led the party to major wins in 2019 on the promise of “getting Brexit done” only to admit that there was no “oven-ready deal” that he’d promised and instead drove the country into an 11th hour “hard Brexit” because it was “better than the alternative.” And the Truss and Sunak governments have basically just kept kicking the can down the road, delaying implementing virtually every single facet of Brexit they can as long as they can to avoid the economic apocalypse that would take place if the country had had all of them happen at once.

Virginia governor says state will abandon California emissions standards by the end of the year

RICHMOND, Va. (AP) — Gov. Glenn Youngkin announced Wednesday that Virginia will abandon California’s stringent vehicle emissions rules aimed at reducing carbon pollution at the end of the year when that state’s current regulations expire, citing an attorney general opinion.

In response to a request from Youngkin and Senate Republican Leader Ryan McDougle, Attorney General Jason Miyares’ opinion issued Tuesday states that Virginia isn’t required to comply with new mandates adopted by the California Air Resources Board set to take effect on Jan. 1.

Youngkin, a Republican, said in a statement that Virginians deserve to choose which vehicles fit their needs and called the idea that government should tell people what kind of car they can buy “fundamentally wrong.”

“Once again, Virginia is declaring independence — this time from a misguided electric vehicle mandate imposed by unelected leaders nearly 3,000 miles away from the Commonwealth,” Youngkin said.

The move was quickly condemned by Democrats and environmental groups.

“He seems to think he has more power than Vladimir Putin,” Senate Majority Leader Scott Surovell said via text message. “The governor is breaking the law and the AG is giving him cover.”

It’s also a move that’s basically pointless, a bit like Rhode Island announcing that they won’t buy textbooks approved for Texas classrooms. California is the largest auto market in the country, any automaker that adopts looser emissions standards than the CA government mandates does so at the cost of millions of potential sales. And since it makes no sense to set up production lines only for VA buyers, the reality is you’re going to see cars on the showroom floor that would meet CA emissions standards whether you agree with them or not.

Russia is preparing to deploy aircraft and combat naval vessels to the Caribbean to conduct military exercises in the coming weeks, its first exercises in the Western Hemisphere involving both air and sea activity in five years, a senior administration official told McClatchy and the Miami Herald.

The Biden administration is not expressing concern over the deployment, with the official stating it poses “no direct threat to the United States.” But the administration believes Moscow intends to use the exercises as a “messaging tactic” after President Joe Biden gave Ukraine permission last week to fire U.S.-made weapons across its border into Russia to defend its territory.

So… for propaganda purposes Russia is going to stretch their limited logistics and personnel capacities to hold exercises in a sea zone that they’d have close to zero chance to operate in with more than a token force (if that) during an actual war.

Which also gives the USN (or equivalent intelligence agency) plenty of opportunity to watch the operation to assess Russian naval capacities, monitor their communications, and essentially learn more about the Russian military through first-hand observation.

My opinion is that Biden should just say “Please proceed.”

And this assumes that the Russians actually follow through and actually try to send something more than a ship or two from the Baltic. Since I half-expect this is just bluster from Putin.

This is my thought. Russia will be lucky if their ships and planes even make it across the Atlantic on the outbound trip, let alone making it all the way back home, if the trends regarding their military readiness are anything to go by. And of course, the US will be watching with eyes in the sky, probably passing along all of the intel they’re gathering on tactics and capabilities to the Ukrainians. Florida Grand Jury now investigating…Fauci

DeSantis loyalists appear to be guiding 18 unidentified Floridians to make a case against the federal government’s pandemic policies. The grand jury’s deliberations are confidential; its public work product looks alarming.

In a report filed on May 21, the Tampa-based grand jury investigating “any and all wrongdoing related to the COVID-19 vaccine” tags federal public health officials with responsibility for an unspecified number of drug overdoses.

The drug in question is Ivermectin, a parasite-fighting paste for animals that, according to the jury’s unnamed sources, was “well-tolerated by most patients” though ineffective for treating the novel coronavirus.

(A consumer warning the Food and Drug Administration issued this year says Ivermectin can cause nausea, vomiting, diarrhea, low blood pressure, allergic reactions, dizziness, balance problems, seizures, coma and death.)

The grand jury report makes this bizarre, convoluted argument: Early in the pandemic, the National Institute of Allergy and Infectious Diseases rejected Ivermectin as a COVID-19 treatment; some desperate sufferers believed it was a “miracle drug” the government was lying about; because most doctors didn’t dare prescribe Ivermectin, patients obtained it on their own but didn’t know how to use it. Some of them overdosed.

Therefore, the jury concluded, public health officials who trashed Ivermectin caused the overdoses. “This was a profound failure of public health messaging,” the jury’s report says.

hat may not seem partisan, except for the fact that Dr. Anthony Fauci headed the National Institute of Allergy and Infectious Diseases from 1984 until his retirement in 2022. So while the report doesn’t mention Fauci by name, he’s clearly the target.

And that’s highly political. The Republican governor has called Fauci a “tyrant” who shouldn’t be allowed to “escape accountability.” And who can forget the “Don’t Fauci My Florida” merchandise a DeSantis political action committee sold during his failed presidential bid?

DeSantis was relentless in his attacks on federal pandemic mandates. “When I’m President, there will be a reckoning for the harm they’ve done to kids in pursuit of a political agenda,” he tweeted during his campaign.

Obviously DeSantis isn’t going to be president - at least not in 2024. But the grand jury may deliver that reckoning anyway.

The outspoken Fauci defended himself this week before a Republican-led U.S. House panel that’s airing allegations he covered up the pandemic’s origins. He called the unproven claim “preposterous.”

That does not mean it can’t be unseated if a better explanation is proposed and tested.

theory is just a clumsy attempt to capture something from german, presumably. It just means “system.” chess has opening theory. It doesn’t mean people are guessing as to how openings work (except at my level), just that it is a system of knowledge that is not set in stone, like Aristotelian logic. And yes, ideas in chess opening theory do evolve. The king’s indian defense was a kind of exotic tournament choice for black in the 30’s, but by 1953 it was the Russian weapon of choice at the Zurich Candidates tourney. And the theory of natural selection also has evolved over time as our knowledge has expanded, mostly thanks to our understanding of genetics.

Today is the 80th Anniversary of D-Day also known as Operation Overlord. The Normandy Invasion was called Operation Neptune. There were also a few other things going on during this invasion. Operation Fortitude North was a deception going on in Norway and in the South of England there was Operation Fortitude South another deception plan. There was also Operation Bodyguard a deception plan that used fake radio traffic, sound effects to make the Germans think there were more Americans coming in, and rubber tanks as well as many other types of chicanery to allow the Allies to get a foothold in Europe and keep it.

re: #99 steve_davis

It stems from the fact that in grade school, a lot of us were taught that the term “theory” was equivalent to, “A scientific guess at how something works that can be disproven by experimentation.” This is, of course, to differentiate it from a scientific law, such as the laws of physics, that are (as far as we know) not falsifiable in this universe. However, since a lot of these young-earth creationist cretins never bothered to learn any more science beyond “what is a scientific theory,” they have no understanding of how confident we are in many modern scientific theories, and why theories of the past never enjoyed the same level of confidence. Because the argument they always make is, “Well, we believe that now, but what about vitreous humor, or geocentrism? People believed in those theories, until they didn’t.”

Steve Bannon reveals Trump plans to prosecute his enemies one by one

Donald Trump frequently muses about prosecuting his enemies at rallies, during interviews and in social media posts, and his former chief strategist Steve Bannon revealed his allies are scheming to carry out those threats.

If the recently convicted ex-president wins re-election, his top supporters will urge him to target Manhattan district attorney Alvin Bragg and his other perceived political enemies for prosecution, and Bannon told Axios that Trump’s allies are cooking up legal justification for those investigations.

“Of course [Bragg] should be — and will be — jailed,” Bannon said.

Bragg, who won Trump’s conviction last week on all 34 felony counts against him, could be targeted under the 14th Amendment’s equal protection clause or the Fourth Amendment, which forbids unreasonable searches and seizures, Bannon said, adding the Department of Justice could also target him for “scores of other” alleged violations of the law.

“The evolution of any war… They only get nastier over time,” Bannon said.

Bannon told the New York Times that Republican prosecutors should make a name for themselves by prosecuting Trump’s enemies ahead of his potential return to the White House.

“There are dozens of ambitious backbencher state attorneys general and district attorneys who need to ‘seize the day’ and own this moment in history,” Bannon said.

Bragg is also prosecuting Bannon for alleged money laundering and conspiracy in connection with the “Build the Wall” group, in a case scheduled to go to trial in September, and while the district attorney is a state official who operates independently of the federal government, House Republicans intend to punish him and other prosecutors who have investigated Trump.

“We have seen rogue prosecutors abuse the rules of professional conduct and their duty to do justice in service of politicized ends,” wrote House Judiciary Committee chairman Jim Jordan (R-OH). “We recommend that the Appropriations Committee, with appropriate consultation from leadership, include language to eliminate federal funding for state prosecutors or state attorneys general involved in lawfare and to zero out federal funding for federal prosecutors engaged in such abuse.”

Jordan has called on Bragg and one of his courtroom prosecutors, Matthew Colangelo to testify June 13 on his select subcommittee on the weaponization of the federal government about Trump’s prosecution, and House speaker Mike Johnson (R-LA) said that hearing was the first step toward rolling up other cases against the quadruple-indicted ex-president.

“We’re going to look at special counsel Jack Smith,” Johnson said. “We have the funding streams. We have mechanisms to try to get control of that.”

‘Greatest threat you never heard of’: Report reveals lurking menace to U.S. democracy

An obscure group of religious zealots known as the New Apostolic Reformation represent the greatest threat to Democracy that America has never heard of, according to a new report.

The Southern Poverty Law Center released Tuesday its annual “Year In Hate And Extremism” and beyond recording the “highest number” of anti-LGBTQ+ and white nationalist groups ever recorded —595 hate groups and 835 antigovernment extremist groups in America — it spotlighted the NAR as a “growing movement within charismatic churches” quietly erupting stateside.

The group is described as a “new and powerful Christian supremacy movement that is attempting to transform culture and politics in the U.S. and countries across the world into a grim authoritarianism.”

The apostles, falling under the “Seven Mountains Mandate” that, according to The Huffington Post, subscribes to the thinking that they are granted “legal power and authority from Heaven” and are “God’s ambassadors and spokespeople over the earth” and that they are “equipped and delegated by Him to destroy every attempted advance of the enemy.”

According to the Huffington Post, the group has ties to the U.S. Capitol attack on Jan. 6, 2021, and friends in high places.

“The attack on the Capitol was largely inspired, the report suggests, by NAR’s theology of dominionism,” the Huffington Post reports.

According to the report, “NAR prayer groups were mobilized at the Capitol on Jan. 6, 2021, as well as supporting prayer teams all over the country, to exorcise the demonic influence over the Capitol that adherents said was keeping Trump from his rightful, prophesized second term.”

The Huffington Post notes “major Republican” figures took part in such events.

“Mike Johnson, who is now the speaker of the House, joined the NAR’s ‘Global Prayer for Election Integrity,’ which called for Trump’s reinstatement as president, in the weeks leading up to the attack on the Capitol. Johnson has also stated that Jim Garlow, an NAR leader, has had a ‘profound influence’ on his life.”

The NAR is an amalgamation of like-minded organs such as Truth and Liberty Coalition and City Elders pursuing the same aims: to wrest control of political sway throughout American society.

It also props up modern-day “apostles” and “prophets,” according to the report cited by the Huffington Post.

City Elders founder Jesse Leon Rodgers seeks to create the mission of a Kingdom of God in America.

That translates into a way of life where all businesses, culture schools are beholden to religious tenets.

The SPLC describes what happens with any detractors of the NAR’s grand plans.

It suggests that opposition are literally “demonic” and argues demonizing any argument is perilous.

“When everyone but your own is demonic, there is no room for discussion or any daylight left between you for compromise, which undermines the very heart of a modern, democratic system,” according to an SPLC release. “The effect is a wearing down, and sometimes, a tearing down of institutions and trust meant to hold people accountable to each other and to help moderate conflict before it breaks into violence.

“The destruction of our civic institutions, even when they need reform, will only give the hard right a free hand unencumbered by checks and balances to rewrite our social contract into a dystopian, Christian supremacist, and even neo-fascist future.”

GOP is desperate to put up show trials of Democrats and other enemies of Trump.

Why?

Because every last one of them knows that convicted felon Donald Trump is polling much worse because of the 34 convictions by a jury of his peers in NY.

They need to dirty up Democrats. They need to level the playing field as quickly as possible, which is also why the GOP and SCOTUS are slow-rolling the other 3 criminal cases against Trump and his coconspirators into oblivion.

More convictions would show that it wasn’t just NY. More convictions would show that Trump is a serial felon. More convictions (especially a 3d conviction) would trigger 3 strikes rules on sentencing.

More convictions would show just how thoroughly corrupt and coopted the GOP is.

The media keeps trying to magic balance fairy Trump-Biden, by pushing the theme that Biden is old and needs to read off cards and notes.

Ummm… every legit president reads off cards and notes to make sure that they’re getting all the information they need. Know who didn’t bother reading? Trump. Know who ignored PDBs? Trump. Know who ignored expert advice? Trump.

Know who is a convicted felon? Trump.

WSJ is smearing Biden. They know it’s total bullshit, but that the WSJ is considered “prestigious” so that it infiltrates other media outlets as being anything other than a sleazy hitjob.

Was that not originally by Bloom County’s Billy and the Boingers

I wasn’t aware and/or forgot this. My girlfriend at the time was a Mucky Pup fan and we listed to the cassette tape until it warped.

Prior to publication, Breathed announced a contest[1][2] to solicit original song submissions as if written by or for the in-comic heavy metal rock group, “Billy and the Boingers”.[3] The first-place winner’s song, “I’m A Boinger”, was included in the book on the A-side of a flexi disc. The second-place winner, “U-Stink-But-I-♥-U”, was on the B-side. “U-Stink-But-I-♥-U” was performed by New Jersey hardcore band Mucky Pup, who also rerecorded the song for their second album, A Boy In A Man’s World. The track became the band’s signature song and, throughout the band’s existence, was played live to close out their shows.

Found more really excellent decaf. I’ve been drinking the stumptown trapper creek, but put together a sample pack of decafs from j. Martinez out of Atlanta. 8 oz packs, but can be ordered in 16 oz boxes. Just started the Sumatra mandheling (mandalorian? Who knows. In the other room). Two other varieties as well. This one was good with heavy cream (what isn’t?) and good plain as well.

A New York judge who was caught on camera shoving a police officer and brawling with neighbors during a shirtless meltdown over a parking spot will soon be replaced on the bench.

Judge Mark Grisanti, an acting state Supreme Court justice in Buffalo, was not on the list of the 25 judicial nominees Gov. Kathy Hochul sent to the state Senate Judiciary Committee for consideration on Wednesday.

Grisanti was also not reappointed to his seat, a spokesman for commission chair Sen. Brad Hoylman-Sigal said.

NYS Gov Hochul panders to suburban drivers by putting the NYC congestion pricing scheme on indefinite hold.

Instead of letting this go into effect, which would reduce traffic into Manhattan below 63d Street, and raise billions for mass transit improvements across the region (MTA has service running into lower Hudson River valley (Hudson Valley line, Port Jervis Line), Connecticut, Long Island, and shares facilities with Amtrak and NJ Transit (Penn Station), we get Hochul pandering to drivers who, but for the lack of adequate mass transit options, drive in to Manhattan.

NJ politicos cheered this on, even though most NJ people would rather be able to take mass transit to get to Manhattan than sit in traffic for hours (which is the whole point of shifting behavior towards less damaging alternatives).

Commuters are fucked once again.

‘Stolen valor’: Republicans shame Trump-loving Troy Nehls over combat pin he didn’t earn

Rep. Troy Nehls (R-TX) is facing withering criticism from fellow Republicans for continuing to wear a combat pin that he was mistakenly awarded.

House Republicans are accusing the congressman of “stolen valor” for wearing the Combat Infantryman Badge pin from Afghanistan on his suit jacket, right beneath his 118th Congress pin, although he served as a civil affairs officer and not in the infantry or Special Forces, reported NOTUS.

“It matters,” said Rep. Ryan Zinke (R-MT), a former Navy SEAL. “As a former commander, it matters what you wear on your uniform, and if you didn’t earn it, you shouldn’t wear it.”

CBS News previously reported that Nehls’ combat badge had been revoked from his service record in March 2023 because it had been awarded by mistake, but a dozen GOP lawmakers who are also military veterans told NOTUS they had noticed their colleague was still wearing the pin and they’re not happy about it.

“That’s ridiculous,” said Rep. Wesley Hunt (R-TX), who wears a similar Combat Action Badge. “That’s stolen valor.”

“Healthcare providers should be aware that Trichophyton mentagrophytes type VII [TMVII] is the latest in a group of severe skin infections to have now reached the United States,” said Dr. Avrom S. Caplan, an assistant professor in NYU Grossman School of Medicine’s dermatology department.

Caplan co-authored a case study published Wednesday about an unidentified New Yorker who became infected with TMVII, with a rash appearing on his penis, buttocks and limbs.

New rulings drop in 5 minutes… I’m expecting the court to withhold their ruling on Trump immunity until the 5th of never (or the last possible day they can - to delay Trump’s criminal trials until after the election).

I also expect the Court to further destroy it’s already shattered reputation by curbing civil and voting rights, and pushing a Christian fascist worldview.

The Court has always had a conservative bent - the Warren Court was the outlier.

It’s returned to the baseline and then some. This Court has done more damage to civil and voting rights than any before or since Taney.

Exclusive: NAACP asks Biden to halt weapons to Israel as he seeks to shore up Black voter support

June 6 (Reuters) - The NAACP urged President Joe Biden on Thursday to “indefinitely” halt all weapons deliveries to Israel and pressure the U.S. ally to end its war in the Gaza Strip, sending a reminder that his support for Israel could hurt him among Black voters in November’s election.

The NAACP’s call was a rare instance of the influential civil rights organization taking a position on U.S. foreign policy towards a country without a significant Black population. It appeared likely to deepen the Democratic president’s election-year challenges as he tries to back a key ally abroad and temper unrest among his supporters at home.

The 115-year-old civil rights group said Israel had a right to defend itself after the Hamas militant attacks on Oct. 7 that Israel says killed some 1,200 people and took more than 250 hostages.

The NAACP urged Hamas to return the hostages and “stop all terrorist activity.” It also urged Israel to “commit to an offensive strategy that is aligned with international and humanitarian laws.” Israel faces accusations at the International Court of Justice that it has violated the genocide convention, which it denies.

The NAACP, which has advocated for racial justice and rights for Black Americans, said the U.S. must use its influence with Israel to bring a permanent ceasefire to Gaza. According to health authorities in the Hamas-run enclave, Israel’s campaign has killed more than 36,000 Palestinians, caused widespread hunger and displaced most of the population from their homes.

“The NAACP calls on President Biden to draw the red line and indefinitely end the shipment of all weapons and artillery to the state of Israel and other states that supply weapons to Hamas and other terrorist organizations. It is imperative that the violence that has claimed so many civilian lives, immediately stop,” the organization said in a statement first provided to Reuters.

The NAACP stance represents the latest warning sign that Biden may pay a price at the ballot box among Black voters on Nov. 5 for his staunch support of Israel.

Just three opinions today.

A bankruptcy case: Justice Sotomayor has the first opinion. It is Truck Insurance v. Kaiser Gypsum. Unanimous with Alito not participating.

Connelly v. US, from Justice Thomas. Unanimous. A corporation’s contractual obligation to redeem shares is not necessarily a liability that reduces a corporation’s value for purposes of the federal estate tax.

Becerra v. San Carlos Apache Tribe. 5-4. Written by Roberts. Sotomayor, Gorsuch, Kagan, and Jackson join with Roberts to find that an Indian tribe is allowed to enter into contracts with the Indian Health Service to assume responsibility for administering the health care programs that the IHS would otherwise operate, requires the IHS to pay contract support costs to support tribal programs funding by payments from third parties such as Medicare, Medicaid, and private insurers. Kavanaugh wrote the dissent, claiming that this is a misreading of the law and that it should have been left to Congress.

Hunter’s lawyer is competent. He’s focused on intent and that there was no intent to commit a crime. There’s a reason that this particular crime isn’t charged against people - it’s nearly impossible to find intent to commit the crime of lying about being a drug addict, and if someone is in recovery at the time of filing, does that mean they’re not an addict? There’s no definitions provided on the form and no guidance on how to fill out this section of the form.

I think the jury is sympathetic to Hunter, and will acquit on all charges. Prosecutors can’t make their case (which was brought by a partisan hack who knows damned well they didn’t have the goods to get a conviction here - the mere trial was sufficient to dirty up Hunter and by extension Joe).

Besides the effort to try and embarrass Joe Biden, the Hunter trial’s more important malignant attempt is to discredit the US Judicial System as an institution.

Guilty? Proceed to attack Joe Biden with conspiracy theories. Not Guilty? The system is rigged by Democrats and Liberals.

Making the Judicial system more feeble and subservient to Republican demands is the goal in order to enable massive criminal activity and absolute political power.

Republicans are currently preparing the way. We are through the looking glass if Multiple Felon Trump wins.

There has to be a similar pun in there.

Same outfits that are raising all kinds of red flags about bird flu or other emerging diseases that could pose a pandemic risk are also pushing the notion that government isn’t the answer (or attacking/undermining public health efforts). GOP/right wing outfits attacked pandemic prevention efforts, WHO, etc., and those are critical to identifying and reporting those emerging diseases/pandemics.

The GOP sabotaged our pandemic readiness, courtesy of Trump. They’re undermining it even now, as individual states are pushing junk science and BS (see Florida’s nutbag surgeon general). It’s a bad recipe for disaster.

“…Former U.S. Capitol Police officer Harry Dunn and former sergeant Aquilino Gonell were introduced on the floor Wednesday as “heroes” by House Speaker Joanna McClinton (D) for having “bravely defended democracy in the United States Capitol against rioters and insurrection on Jan. 6.”

As the two men — both of whom were injured by rioters on Jan. 6 — were introduced, the House floor descended into chaos. According to Democratic lawmakers, several GOP lawmakers hissed and booed, with a number of Republicans walking out of the chamber in protest.

He was asked about 9/11 and JFK.

He had opportunity to declassify those between 2017 and 2021. He didn’t. Why would anyone believe him now.

Besides, he could just leave them out by the buffet at MAL along with our national nuclear secrets.

Once again Gorsuch on the side of the native Americans — the only non-GOP issue on which he is consistently loyal.

The MAGA cult has Trump Derangement Syndrome. It’s not found on the left.

Seeking Evidence of The MAGA Cult and Trump Derangement Syndrome: An Examination of (A)symmetric Political Bias

Abstract
Three studies sought to explore the existence of (a)symmetric bias regarding Donald Trump. In Study 1, participants read one of three statements expressing different degrees of favorability toward electing the President of the United States via a National Popular Vote attributed to Trump or an anonymous source. In Study 2, participants read one of two statements either favoring or disfavoring the name change of the Washington NFL franchise, and the statement was attributed to either Trump or an anonymous source. In Study 3, Trump and Biden voters were asked to rate their support or opposition to counting all the votes in battleground states when continued counting was expected to either help Trump or Biden. Results for all three studies supported the asymmetric bias hypothesis. Trump supporters consistently showed bias in favor of the interests and ostensible positions of Trump, whereas Trump’s detractors did not show an opposing bias.

It’s not a requirement in the constitution, so they could pass the law if they wanted, but it definitely proves they’re in a cult.

There are two types of countries which put living leaders on their money.

1. Countries where their leader is effectively powerless, has a tiny amount of residual power. Where they’re effectively a mascot for the country like Mickey Mouse for Disney.
2. Countries that are real sh*tholes where the leader has a cult of personality around themself. Like Turkmenistan’s late leader Niyazov who renamed one of the months of the year after his mother. Basically the opposite of what the founding father’s the right claims to respect were for.
