Rep. Raskin Slams Republicans for Aiding Trump’s Plans for Retribution: “An Absolute Betrayal”

Politics • Views: 11,032

Sometimes it seems like the only leading Democrat willing to call out the fascist insanity of the Republican Party is Jamie Raskin. I’m grateful to him for it, but where is the rest of the party? Why aren’t they all raising the alarm?

New reporting about how Trump could weaponize U.S. spy services against domestic political enemies if he wins a second term is fueling new concerns about Trump abusing the government for self-serving purposes. Rep. Jamie Raskin joins Ali Velshi to discuss the implications of Trump’s plan to increase executive authority and how Republicans are aiding him in the process. “They’re quite overtly talking about a post-constitutional America,” Rep. Raskin warns. “They’re trying to do what Donald Trump has repeatedly urged, which is to set the Constitution aside and that’s an absolute betrayal of our entire history.”

I’m sure the actual penalty won’t be 10 years — and probably not even prison time. But just because there was no intention to harm anyone doesn’t mean that something couldn’t go terribly wrong and cause serious injuries or damage.

I’m late to this party
Wrt any kind of firearm/2a discussion, adjudication must be based on the potential damage or destruction
yes somewhat mitigated by intent..reckless vs careless vs oops

We can’t have people out in public brandishing or pointing/aiming weapons or actually discharging them and then saying “no one got hit so no harm no foul”

A while back we saw discussion of Katie Britt’s “baby fundie voice” and how that was a deliberate effort by right wing christian women to appear submissive to the men around them. I’d like to see more discussion of the “fundie glamour” look that all the Trumpy women take on. Lara Trump, Ivanka Trump, Melania Trump, Kim Guillfoyle, Kristie Noem, and so many others have this same look of massive amounts of makeup, twirled long hair, and puffed up lips. And you see the women who show up in photos of the parties at Mar a Lago, and it’s more of the same.

Link to Reddit as the Fargo InForum article is fire-walled; about former ND state representative Luke Simmons - old.reddit.com

She claims that Luke accused her of being deficient in her “Bible studies” because she was “missing the part about wives being submissive to their husbands.” She says Luke claims she was talking “with a bad attitude just like liberal Democrats.”

Some simply beyond disturbing things in that article and I don’t want to highlight any of them. ND MAGA Republicans still defending him and saying due process wasn’t used to remove him from office.

That could be true, but OSINTdefender is not a reliable source.

And even if it is true, you could be a deluded person hiding people from the army or police thinking you’re doing the right thing.

There was a thing going around yesterday about how allegedly Israeli troops were hiding in vehicles marked with international aid societies like the Red Crescent so they could rescue hostages.

The argument they weren’t really aid vehicles (therefore no harm no foul) was that some had commercial logos on them. (No aid agency has ever rented or used a commercial vehicle before. /s)

What it would take would be an independent investigation, which neither Hamas nor Israel is going to allow.

There’s a very long and detailed Bluesky thread going from Akiva Cohen about what is and isn’t true about the Israeli raid. Aid vehicles are right out. The civilian marked vehicle they used was for extraction only; the soldiers went in disguised, rescued the hostages, and attempted to make their way out in the truck, only for Hamas fighters to take out the truck and force the soldiers to fight their way out. All of which is pretty standard, and would probably make for a pretty good movie, after the fact.

A Christian group teaches public school students during the school day. Their footprint is growing (Yahoo!, yesterday)

Your tax dollars at work promoting one specific interpretation of one religion. I would think other Christian sects would rally to oppose such things (but they rarely do).

A Christian group teaches public school students during the school day. Their footprint is growing.

INDIANAPOLIS (AP) — An Ohio nonprofit that provides off-site Bible instruction to public school students during classroom hours says it will triple its programs in Indiana this fall after new legislation forced school districts to comply.

To participating families, nondenominational LifeWise Academy programs supplement religious instruction. But critics in Indiana worry the programs spend public school resources on religion, proselytize to students of other faiths and remove children from class in a state already struggling with literacy.

LifeWise founder and CEO Joel Penton told The Associated Press that many parents want religious instruction to be part of their children’s education.

“Values of faith and the Bible are absolutely central to many families,” Penton said. “And so they want to demonstrate to their children that it is central to their lives.”

Yet again it will probably take a lawsuit by atheists to stop it (as long as we still have civil rights).

Well not even my 72 VDC, 40 amp charger could bring it up to voltage. Hell, I had to shut it off because it was over heating. So I’m now having to charge each battery individually. I also ordered a 100 Amp load tester to check each battery to see if any of them need to be replaced. I just so happen to have 2 of the same type of batteries that I purchased for the ill fated RV project on hand. So if replacement(s) is/are necessary, I at least have them on hand.

A nuanced attempt by Sen. Linsey Graham (R-SC) to assert that the U.S. should never have been in the position to have to launch the Normandy invasion 80 years ago fell with a thud on Sunday morning after he told a CBS host that D-Day was a “failure.”

Discussing battling Russian President Vladimir Putin for invading Ukraine, Graham tried to compare that war with fighting Nazi Germany.

Referencing the massive invasion that was a pivotal battle that helped lead to the end of the war with Nazi Germany, Graham stated, “We celebrated the 80th anniversary of D-Day. It was a failure. It was the ‘unnecessary war, ’ described by Winston Churchill. We had a dozen chances to stop Hitler. It’s not about NATO. It’s not about American weapons in Ukraine. It’s about a megalomaniac wanting to create the Russian Empire by force of arms.”

re: #66 Anymouse 🌹🏡😷

This is “release time” and our Supreme Court has allowed it, as long as it’s not on school campuses. Parents have to give permission for children to attend. In other places, churches send buses to the schools to take the kiddoes away. Here in Arizona (and also in Utah, when I lived there), the Mormon (LDS) church has “seminaries” next to or across the street from high schools for their release time program. This has been permitted for *years*.

Oklahoma just passed another law (it’s already legal, this was performative) allowing release time. The Satanic Temple is likely to sue, but not to get rid of it. More to embarrass the hell out of the state and local school districts to get their HAIL (Hellion Academy of Independent Learning) program into districts where parents have requested it. (Not sure how that will work out in places where anyone who isn’t Baptist / Methodist / Presbyterian is already a minority, even if they are Catholic or Episcopalian.)

Anyway, the logo for HAIL is cute.

Yet again it will probably take a lawsuit by atheists to stop it (as long as we still have civil rights).

“Values of faith and the Bible are absolutely central to many families,” Penton said. “And so they want to demonstrate to their children that it is central to their lives.”

If it’s so central to their lives, why aren’t they teaching those values to their children themselves, in their own homes?

Idaho is the same. The classes are elective and are held off campus and require parental approval. As a Pagan Witch, I don’t have a problem with this. The students who choose to attend do so “voluntarily” and receive no credits toward graduation as they are not part of the approved curriculum.

I’m old enough to remember back when Obama was in office hearing that Obama couldn’t speak without a teleprompter. Now they are cool with them I guess. They are very consistent with their inconsistencies.

“If you use it now, you’re like Obama,” Davis said. “It’s a negative because it’s a sign of inauthenticity. It’s a sign that you can’t speak on your own two feet. It’s a sign that you have handlers behind you telling you what to say.”

Because they want to teach other people their values. Voluntarily if allowed, by force if necessary.

I wasn’t aware she paid back all the money she and her first husband stole from the PTL Club and Heritage, USA.

Her second hub Roe Messner (a property developer) was also sent to prison for bankruptcy fraud. She didn’t do anything to pay back that $30MM fraud either.

Fifth Circuit Court of Appeals stumbles into a correct decision.

Appeals court tells Texas it cannot ban books for mentioning ‘butt and fart’ (today, The Guardian)

“Conservative-dominated court restores books denounced by officials as ‘pornographic filth’ to school libraries”

An appellate court has ruled that Texas cannot ban books from libraries simply because they mention “butt and fart” and other content which some state officials may dislike.

The fifth US circuit court of appeals issued its decision on Thursday in a 76-page majority opinion, which was written by Judge Jacques Wiener Jr and opened with a quote from American poet Walt Whitman: “The dirtiest book in all the world is the expurgated book.”

In its decision, the appellate court declared that “government actors may not remove books from a public library with the intent to deprive patrons of access to ideas with which they disagree”.

It added: “This court has declared that officials may not ‘remove books from school library shelves simply because they dislike the idea contained in those books and seek by their removal to prescribe what shall be orthodox in politics, nationalism, religion or other matters of opinion.’”
