Why not intervene in Syria?

re: #1 researchok

Would want to, but can’t. Russia has a base there, and a very tight relationship with Al-Assad. We can still help, but it gonna require all kinds of finesse and skill.

[moonbat]It’s all about the oil, anyway. They just want to claim a new source of it.[/moonbat]

Seriously though, of course oil would be a factor. The rebels know it too, otherwise they wouldn’t be selling it to Qatar for funds.

People who are telling the Libyans that they must suffer alone without aid, they are not Liberal.

I think many of those same people would agree with you, preferring to call themselves ‘progressives’. An equally oxymoronic term for that lot, and a good example of why political labels (liberal, conservative, etc.) fail to convey the total reality of one’s positions.

At any rate, I’m with you on this topic, good on ya.

“For example, the previous allegation involving distribution of Viagra to his troops has proven to be true by the UN.”

Now, let’s not go overboard. That a claim has been made by some official or another does not mean that the claim is true. Moreover, there is a significant difference between “is investigating the claims that X” and “proved X”. Besides, in this case a no less authoritative official casts doubt on this claim:

reuters.com

Cherif Bassiouni, head of a U.N. rights inquiry which went to areas controlled by both rebels and Gaddafi, appeared to cast doubt on the ICC report on Thursday, although his team’s report accused government forces of murder, torture and abduction.

Bassiouni said each side had accused the other of deploying fighters armed with impotency drugs to carry out rapes, creating what he called a “massive hysteria” in Libya.

His team uncovered only four alleged cases — Eman Al-Obaidi who claimed she was gang-raped by pro-government militiamen and three women in Misrata who said they had been sexually abused.

“Can we draw a conclusion that there is a systematic policy of rape? In my opinion we can’t,” Bassiouni said. “For the time being, the numbers are very limited.”

As usual, an accuser (investigator, prosecutor…) makes a claim (charge) based on a preliminary investigation, but it won’t necessarily stand up in a court of law, or court of reason for that matter. So let’s wait.

During most armed conflicts there’s a healthy dose of atrocity propaganda. The “Viagra” accusation looks like an artifact of the military times (that started around this time), not unlike “human soap factories” or “2000 Ossetian victims of Georgian bombings”.

(Of course, I’m willing to change my opinion if concrete evidence emerges.)

A country cannot live half slave, half free. It didn’t work in pre-Civil War America and it won’t work in Libya.

Qaddafi will fall, it’s just a question of time.
