If the slides are not true then why is it breaking the law to read them from an “unclassified government workstation”?

Because internal DHS policy is designed to meet legal, political and bureaucratic imperatives, not to make sense to an outsider. The idea is to maintain a consistent policy regarding information about leaks, not to appear logical.

Because Snowden and Greenmold are not authorized to declassify material.

You’re damn right it doesn’t appear logical. If classified material is already leaked out there, its out there period. You can’t unleak whats been leaked. That the Department of Homeland Security doesn’t understand that much about the internet makes me wonder what the hell they do, or even can do, to justify their existence.

Not to mention, they don’t seem to understand what “disclosure” means. Because it isn’t “viewing something thats already out there in public.”

If policy consistency now means sticking their heads up their rears, then I don’t feel like they can ensure the security of a popcorn cart, let alone “homeland.”

As DD just said, its about who can properly declassify material. Government employees are required to abjure read improperly disclosed material.

Dark_Falcon - So, if this slide Classified and can’t be Unclassified thus DHS warns employees not to access it with certian PC’s I think that is about the best confirmation that these docs are ture that they could give.

You say “tomato,” I say “f***ing stupid.”

Its one thing for a government agency to require employees to report classified materials that have been leaked. Its another to threaten them under the pretext of “non-disclosure” for looking at something that is already out there. What is that supposed to accomplish again? Appearing consistent to themselves? Its completely pointless control-freak bs.

Having said that, I’m starting to think DHS and TSA are reading from the same playbook: National Security for Poser Dummies.

There is a bit of a leap in your “logic”.

Just because DHS forbids its employees from reading it, that doesn’t mean its true. Snowden and Greenwald have each proven they’re not above lying to create the desired sensational impression. This only proves that DHS is willing to enact control-freak in-house policies without a care about how stupid it makes them appear. And it does makes them appear very stupid, no matter you slice it.

It’s about controlling cultural perception inside your organization. If you ban folks from reading this stuff you make it harder for them to identify with people who might disagree with their work.

Like I said, stupid control-freak bs. If that is how far you have to go to keep your employees from being disloyal, that means there is something wrong with you, not them.

It’s just government SOP. When I worked at the Job From Hell last year we had to take a class about Social Media and commenting about stuff like Wikileaks while using government computers that are connected to classified servers.

That didn’t mean that we couldn’t go home and view those compromised docs on our own personal computers, just that we couldn’t use the government-issued machines to do that.

On my government-issued laptop, the USB port was disabled, but the SD slot wasn’t. Go figure.

There are social media guidelines at my current job, which mostly involve not bad-mouthing the company while identifying yourself as an employee.

The article litterally says that the DHS thinks that this material is classified and the only way that it can be classified is taht if it is authentically from the NSA.

You can twist the logic anyway that you want.

And as far as the LGF meme regarding who is lying here, sure you guys claim that Greeenwald and Snowden have and are lying but in all cases of major claims made by them, they have been shown to be truthfull.

Obama and his administration are the only ones in this situation who have been conclusively shown to be lying.
