Thanks for the replies, everyone. I was specifically thinking about those ubiquitous lolcat and other “meme” pics, where the original copyright holder is next to impossible to trace.

(though speaking of lolcats, here’s an interesting story about a woman whose photo was used by icanhazcheezburger without her permission)
