Weren’t Americans the first ones to hide behind trees when firing on the enemy instead of providing a long line of targets?

I thought the tactics in the Revolutionary war were better than the insane methods used in the civil war. Using rows of soldiers as human shields while the army marched close enough to charge. Just plain dumb in my opinion.
