OK, I slightly overstated the point; some of this did happen under the Bush administration, as Bush’s focus slowly went away, and the Islamists in Pakistan got over the shock-and-awe factor. The center cannot hold.

But it’s going to accelerate now, because Obama has telegraphed weakness in a big way.
