Jewish is a national identity. It is the people of Israel, the nation of Israel. The Juden/Jews are the people of Judah, the place where Jerusalem is. The religious beliefs are secondary.

The religious beliefs are also non-important to a wide variety of secular Jews. However, Jewish is not a national identity. It’s an ethnic identity, or rather, a collection of ethnic identities.

Before modern Israel existed, we were still Jews.
