Moscow Suicide Bombers Kill 37

World • Views: 5,713

Female suicide bombers struck today in two central Moscow subway stations, killing at least three dozen people in the latest attack by Chechnyan Muslim fanatics: Toll From Moscow Bombing at 37.

MOSCOW — Female suicide bombers set off huge explosions in two subway stations in central Moscow during the Monday morning rush hour, Russian officials said, killing more than three dozen people and raising fears that the Muslim insurgency in southern Russia was once again being brought to the country’s heart.

The first attack occurred as commuters were exiting a packed train at a station near the headquarters of the F.S.B., the successor to the Soviet-era K.G.B. Officials said they suspected that the attack there was intended as a message to the security services, which have helped lead the crackdown on Islamic extremism in Chechnya and other parts of the Caucasus region in southern Russia.

The two explosions spread panic throughout the capital as people searched for missing relatives and friends, and the authorities tried to determine whether more attacks were planned. The subway system is one of the world’s most extensive and well-managed, and it serves as a vital artery for Moscow’s commuters, carrying as many as 10 million people a day.

“The terrorist acts were carried out by two female terrorist bombers,” said Moscow’s mayor, Yuri M. Luzhkov. “They happened at a time when there would be the maximum number of victims.”

To sum up an overnight discussion:

Chechnyan's are not rebels because of Islam, but Islamic radicals are certainly fomenting and supporting Chechnya. Chechnya has been rebelling against Russia for more than a century.

Russia continues to be evil in their relationship with Chechnya, and have committed plenty of abuses against Chechnyans.

I really hope the situation in Chechnya doesn't deteriorate to the point where radical Islam becomes predominant. That would suck.

The evening news showed the stations reopened. An old Muscovite had it right: "Why should I be afraid to ride? They're scum."

Basically, if I was Russian or Chechnyan, I'd be a bit concerned.

Good point. The Chechens would be fighting the Russians regardless of Islam. However, the Islamic element means they have religious justification for suicide bombings, targeting civilians, women, children, etc. War can be brutal but without the Islamic justification the resistance movement might be behaving differently.

Definitely. Wherever Radical Islam goes, old vendettas and feuds are full of new hate and new tactics. It's happened time and time again; the Wahabists or their ilk arrive, and things turn uglier than they ever have.

The main point I want to make is that Russia wants to crush all Chechnyan opposition to Moscow, not just radical Islam.

I absolutely and fundamentally reject that, entirely.

Chechnya has no desire for Russia to cease to exist.

I also do not think that Hamas as been 'brutally oppressed', and the Israelis certainly are above the vast majority of tactics used by the Russians.

Marx was really appalled that the revolution happened in Russia, which was contrary to his theory. He did not want them to have a Marxist revolution, he wanted one of the advanced Western industrial nations to.

It's ironic, but the Russian revolution is the best disproof of the Marxist historical theory.

from the wiki, but a fair sumation

Karl Marx said that for society to change into a communist way of living, there would have to be a transitional period. During this transitional period, the workers would rule their country.

Russia had no transitional period - it went straight from the Tsars to communism, there was no upper worker class, there were nobles and kossaks.

I absolutely and fundamentally reject that, entirely.

Chechnya has no desire for Russia to cease to exist.

I also do not think that Hamas as been 'brutally oppressed', and the Israelis certainly are above the vast majority of tactics used by the Russians.

It is a terrible analogy.

Chechnyan Islamists, like all Islamists (or other theocracy wannabes) have the short strategy and the long strategy. They all converge on converting you and me, by death if necessary. To reduce the issue to one of political recognition is silly.

These attacks seem to be slowing. Possible because the negative public relations outweigh any chance of convincing others of your cause, or inducing concessions due to intimidation.

Terrorism is a good short-term strategy for attempting to achieve goals with limited resources, but it is not a good long term policy in a world of mass communication. Palestine would have folded long long ago, if they weren't being propped up by foreign interests all over the world.

Which war?

Several of them, one of which is the War Against Behaving Like a Bunch of Dipshits.

When we have citizens who can sit around in a [federally-funded] park on Chinese-made plastic lawn furniture they brought with them from a neighboring state, sit in the shade and enjoy a nice iced beverage while intermittently waving misspelled signs comparing the current government to the Third Reich and yelling random chants, whereafter they eventually get bored, pack up, and go home... well, that's a pretty good sign we're losing all the wars.

The fact that such a display can occurr just as easily among people nearing graduation as among people nearing retirement is just more evidence.

Send enough T-34s and you'll kill the Tiger. You just have to be willing to kill 16-32 of your own people to do it. Brutal logic, brutal war.

The U.S. faced the same equation. The Tiger was a good tank. No amount of good tactics or numerical superiority could undo that fact. What we could do, and what we did do, was just trade at whatever the going rate was, silver against gold, until they ran out of gold.

The exchange ratio on the Western Front was something like five to ten Shermans to get a Tiger. They ran out, we didn't. The Soviet system and its quantity motto didn't really have much to teach a U.S.A. that wrote the manual under Grant.

We didn't have an equal to the 88mm till the 90mm entered service in the M36 Jackson in the late fall of 1944. However, our 155mm was better than the German 150mm and we were much better at coordinating our fire. Germany never had anything like our time-on-target barrage.

I spent one weekend in Salt Lake years ago...I have some funny stories about.. I almost missed my flight in Oakland.. I missed the gate cause of BART at 7am.. Went to the bar..Slumped in the chair..ordered a bloody Mary and moan that my boss my going to kill me..
Some dumbass was on the wrong plane and returned to the gate..
Not for the guy you left and the gate with a ticket
No a guy that had had the wrong ticket you return to gate? I say fly his ass to Salt Lake.. Serves him right...I just ordered a 10 dollar drink..
But that was History...And now I got lots of stories to tell...
BTW When i got on the plane I had to walk all the way to the back...You would not believe the ugly looks you get in Oakland boarding after the plane returns to the gate... I felt like dead man walking...
And as a person that boarded a plane after being readied for take-off( Wasn't my fault..Remember the guy with the wrong ticket)
I find this to be true.. If the plane returns to the gate and somebody gets off and you get on..
1) Be in first class.. Cause everybody then thinks you are cool and it's easy to pull off...Sign anything and pass it to the kid in the next seat..
2) Don't be in the very last seat in the plane.. First you have to walk by every one of them.. But all during the flight you get those looks like..' I hope somebody gets diarrhea back in the restroom this flight fucker'
And of course.. If everybody on the plane hates you.. You know how that is projected don't you? The Flight Attendant.. She is the Hero of the masses..
You dare not ask for anything...Cause you are the guy in the back..

this is such a ridiculous simplification. I don't know shit about Chechnya, and I even know this.

re: #4 Obdicut

To sum up an overnight discussion:

Chechnyan's are not rebels because of Islam, but Islamic radicals are certainly fomenting and supporting Chechnya. Chechnya has been rebelling against Russia for more than a century.

Russia continues to be evil in their relationship with Chechnya, and have committed plenty of abuses against Chechnyans.

I really hope the situation in Chechnya doesn't deteriorate to the point where radical Islam becomes predominant. That would suck.

Quoted and bolded because it should be repeated and understood.

Want to see something interesting, go on Google earth and check out Chechnya. Why, it looks like RUBBLE.

Radical islam is an opportunistic infection. I'm tired of people talking about radical Islam as if it were C.O.B.R.A, like it's some cosmic army on par with ours that can take over America outright.

First, I would like to make it clear that suicide bombings such as this and terrorist acts are unacceptable in a civilized society. The Moscow bombings are an atrocity.

However, it's important to note that the Russians have been the main antagonoists with regards to Chechnyan independence. During the 1st and 2nd Chechnyan wars it was common to see Americans rooting for the Chechens. This was for two reasons. The Cold War was fresh in our minds which correlated with an anti-Communist fervor and prior to September 11, 2001. No one gave a second thought to the Islamic nature of Chechnya because in their minds, the Chenens were still engaged in fighting the Soviet Bear.

Although there was some public support with the end of the Cold War the US had no practical reason to support the Chechnens. The Soviet empire was longs gone. This can be contrasted with our clandestine support of the Afghani rebels or the Mujahadeen. It also included direct support of Saddam Hussein. All done to keep the Soviet empire at bay. It's important to note that with the withdrawal of the Soviets from Afghanistan it created a power vacuum that led to the influx of the Taliban who were supported by the Pakistan ISI. Pakistan also supported the Mujahadeen during the Soviet occupation of Afghanistan.

A response during the conflict:

U.S.-Russian Intersection: The Romance Is Gone

WASHINGTON, March 26— After three months of squabbling over the war in Chechnya, the expansion of NATO and the plans by Moscow to build nuclear reactors in Iran, Russia's Foreign Minister stated the obvious last week when he said the post-cold-war honeymoon between Russia and the United States "has come to an end."

With President Clinton now planning to meet in May with President Boris N. Yeltsin in Moscow, Foreign Minister Andrei V. Kozyrev and Secretary of State Warren Christopher suggested that relations between the two countries should evolve into something new and utterly unromantic...

This was in 1995 during the First Chechen war which saw 30,000 to 40,000 Chechen civilian deaths. The Second Chechen War saw estimates of 25,000 to 50,000 Chechen civilians.

An interesting read.

Chechen Nationalism and the Tragedy of the Struggle for Independence
by Mr. Lester W. Grau, and Dr. Jacob W. Kipp
Foreign Military Studies Office, Fort Leavenworth, KS.

Excerpt:

Stalinism and Chechnya

Joseph Stalin, the Bolshevik Commissar of Nationalities and a Georgian, adapted the class struggle to the traditional policy of divide and rule. Soviet federalism provided a national veneer to a centralized state, controlled by the Communist Party, where Russians staffed the key party posts within the various republics. The Chechens proved a difficult people to subdue. In 1929 they revolted against collectivization, leading to a decade-long struggle. Russians arrived to manage the oil industry with the development of Chechen oil fields.

During World War II, when the German Army advanced into the Caucasus, there were more signs of Chechen unrest and collaboration with the enemy. In late February 1944, Lavrenti Beria’s NKVD carried out Stalin’s “solution” to the Chechen Question—the mass deportation of Chechens to Central Asia. Over 70,000 Chechens of the 450,000 expelled died during transit or on arrival. Chechnya ceased to exist. The exile became the defining event for succeeding generations of Chechens. In 1957 Nikita Khrushchev decreed that the Chechens could return to their ancestral homelands. Chechnya and Ingushetia were joined administratively into the Chechen-Ingush Autonomous Republic. This arrangement joined the rebellious Chechens with the traditionally loyal Ingush in a clear continuation of Moscow’s policy of divide and rule. Inside Chechnya, Soviet officials made their own arrangements with local clans while keeping an uneasy eye open for signs of resistance to Communist rule.

A not well-known fact (use it to brighten up the conversation at your next dinner-party) Rasputin's dong is displayed in a jar of formaldehyde in Saint Petersburg.

You miss Obdicut's main point: NO critique of Islam allowed!

Those suicide-bombers were just freedomfighters, it had nothing to do with them being Muslims. If at all, they used (!!!) "radical" Islam for their goal - but they never did what they did because of (radical) Islam.

It's the same case with Hamas, Fatah, Hizb-Allah, al-Qaida, the Mullahregime... they are all just freedomfighters who uses radical Islam.

And the real and good Islam is peace.

Marx died in 1883, Russian Revolution took place in 1917. You are such a ridiculous windbag.

Yeah, yeah, all Muslims are terrorists in your mind.

re: #252 gegenkritik

Heh, as opposed to you, who make baseless accusations against me.

And one more thing.

Pro-Israel + Pro-Bush = Bad Karma

This is wrong. Here's a decent correction.

Being an asshole + Making baseless accusations = Bad Karma

Huh. I said:

Wherever Radical Islam goes, old vendettas and feuds are full of new hate and new tactics. It's happened time and time again; the Wahabists or their ilk arrive, and things turn uglier than they ever have.

Strangely enough, that kind of looks like a critique.

255 gegenkritik  Tue, Mar 30, 2010 6:32:12am

Islamophile rule number 632:

If it's too evident that the freedom fighters are muslims, make them "radical" Islamists.
Since Islam is peace, radical Islamists must be radical peace-loving people, but do not care about logic.
"Radical" is pejorative, so it's perfect for your purpose to immunize Islam against critique. Blame everything on a few radicals (who totally misunderstood the peaceful Quran) like al-Qaida, Hamas, a few Salafis and so on.
If Islam as an ideology is still critizised, follow the main rule: Scream "RACIST!"! as loud as you can.

re: #255 gegenkritik

Islam isn't an ideology, it's a religion. With a lot of different forms. And it's not attatched to any particular racial group.

Have you noticed that the things you constantly complain about don't actually happen to you? I haven't seen anyone call you racist.

Your use of the word is actually the first in the entire thread.

Funny thing that someone whose historical knowledge is so great that he thought "Karl Marx was really appalled that the revolution happened in Russia" want to teach me (who studied the subject) about Islam.

Have you noticed that the things you constantly complain about don't actually happen to you? I haven't seen anyone call you racist.

Some moron just cried to me that "all Muslims are terrorists in your mind". This is the usual tactic of Islamophiles, whether they have a clue about Islam or not (like you and and most of the Islamophiles here): Accuse the opponent that he wants to kill every muslim, that he suspects every muslim to be a terrorist, that he is a racist and so on.
The "Islam is peace"-dogma is sacrosanct for non-muslim Islamophiles like you, it has characteristics of a religion itself, replacing Enlightment with Ideology.

You undermine any point you might make with your insults. You make it so no one will listen to you because you are being an ass. Try being nicer, you'll get more done that way. You don't have to lie, simply do not accuse or insult.

Chechnya is to Russia what Gaza is to Israel. If you think think Hamas is justified in their argument that they have been brutally oppressed by Israel, then by all means extend the analogy to Russia, warts and all.

Find me someone who can make a case against Israel in the same way Georgia can do against Russia - that they were brutally oppressed but did not resort to terrorism - and I will buy your analogy. Up to then, Chechnya is to Russia what the Balkans are to Europe - something their politicians see as an internal affair not meant to draw any of the same scrutiny the Israelis receive over Gaza, and more of a quagmire than Afghanistan or Iraq.

re: #53 Obdicut

It's ironic, but the Russian revolution is the best disproof of the Marxist historical theory.

Once again recommending Jeffrey Lewis brief history of communism:

Marx - Russia - China - Korea

Never seen it so brief.

Russia is not anyone's friend, least of all ours but Chechnya is to Russia what Gaza is to Israel. If you think think Hamas is justified in their argument that they have been brutally oppressed by Israel, then by all means extend the analogy to Russia, warts and all.

Are you saying that Chechnyans are lying in everything they say Russia is doing? That Russia was actually given Chechnya by a governing body & that the Chechnyans started all the terrorism because they didn't like the switch of government for religious reasons?
