A Hole They Dug for Themselves
There's nothing surprising about the crises in state budgets
We all know the reason for the squeeze: An unexpected, severe national recession has dried up revenues just when states need funds to help out-of-work citizens. That's true: You would expect the worst downturn in decades to have a negative effect on tax collections. But it's a long way from the whole truth.
The crisis in state budgets is not an accident, and it wasn't unforeseeable. For years, most states have spent like there's no tomorrow, and now tomorrow is here. They bring to mind the lament of Mickey Mantle, who said, "If I knew I was going to live this long, I'd have taken better care of myself."
If they had known the revenue flood wasn't a permanent fact of life, governors and legislators might have prepared for drought. Instead, like overstretched homeowners, they took on obligations they could meet only in the best-case scenario—which is not what has come to pass.

ok, here it is. kind of cobbled together but you'll enjoy it
Quite a few years ago we were down to just one dog after loosing Huckleberry my male black lab to an iron horse and Sawyer my female black lab to blindness. That one dog would be Willy our 15 year old lhasa apso. (oh I forgot to mention the 13 puppies we had to contend with in At any rate I wasn't too keen at getting another dawg at the time, and if I did it would have been another lab, but the turnwife went to the pound and brought one home without consulting me. I was pissed, and I swore I wouldn’t give that dog any attention. Well she named him Ben-Ben, and he was a strange mix. I knew he had some Shitzoo in him but the back half looked like a completely different breed. I used to call him cat-dog because I swear it was like on half of him was a different animal. At any rate he was way screwed up in the head, he would totally freak out if you tried to lift him. Heck he would start yelping if you just made a quick gesture to pet him. Needless to say turn couldn’t give him the cold shoulder for more that a day or two and I started to get really attracted to him. He was really a sweet little dog that must have been mistreated by children or something and was obviously used to being on the run (he would get out the gate and take off any chance he could get.) Gradually over more than a year he warmed up to us but you still couldn’t pick him up without yelping a creating a fuss. One day I was reading a newspaper out on the patio and out of the blue – bang – he jumped right up into my lab! I just about fell over. I calmly petted him for a while and he let me pick him up and set him down. It was like he finally figured out, ok I can trust this guy. He was MY dog after that, the turnwife was so jealous. We finally had to put him down because of heart failure, evidentially he was much older than we thought when we got him.

Corgis are the bad boys of the herding breeds, but make up for it. Great characters.
When I asked someone at the river what those little dogs were bred for I couldn't believe herding. She also told me they were small so they wouldn't pick up tics from the larger animals.

Interesting to listen to Neil Cavuto...
He says that Congress, in this example Waxman, want nothing to do with the gov health plan for themselves. They want to keep their current plan, which in his mind, and mine, says it all. If it was so great they would all be dying to jump aboard.

I happened to watch the O'Reilly show recently when he did a lengthy segment about how horrific the Netherlands and Amsterdam are, because of their civil libertarianism. Well, I've been to many parts of the Netherlands, and O'Reilly's distorted portrayal of it as a violent, crime-filled anarchy certainly didn't match what I saw.

Not only that, but PETA ought to have some sense of priorities. Work on getting people to be sympathetic to animal rights causes by talking about abuse involving animals people already care for, not by renaming fish 'seakittens' and complaining about a fly being swatted.
When they actually find homes for the kittens and puppies that are given to their care, instead of slaughtering them (just like the meat processors they complain about) and stop using the tax-free money they solicit to "help save animals" to pay for porn actresses to parade naked at their events.

When I asked someone at the river what those little dogs were bred for I couldn't believe herding. She also told me they were small so they wouldn't pick up tics from the larger animals.
I've heard all sorts of stories about why they're small - but until you've watched a corgi in action, or better yet, a pair of them, you don't understand. Nothing can bite them, they're too low to the ground and they corner like nothing you've ever seen. Yes, their legs are about three inches long, but they move in a blur. Once, my Goon was chasing his sister (the black mutt, sister by adoption, obviously), and behind him was a rooster-tail of mud taller than I am.
Then there was the day that Goon and Ushki (another corgi) decided to run doggie park. Every other dog was in a huddle in the middle, looking nervous. Any time a new dog came in, or one broke from the huddle, Goon and Ushki would chase it back in. One corgi would nip the ankle, and, when the bigger dog would turn to try to tell that corgi off, the other would swoop in and nip the other ankle, or even a haunch.
Igor and I (corgi owners) were howling. The other owners were not amused.

Before I go, a little news. Seems that the Angry Clown from MN has surfaced finally:
Franken berates Pickens over Swiftboat ads
No class whatsoever. Its been five years- let it go.
The problem in attacking all of those involved with the Swift Boat group, is that not one of their assertions has ever been debunked.
There were over 200 Swifties & of that number something like 68 were eyewitnesses to Kerry's actions & found him to be anything but heroic.
Kerry is a fraud who slandered all Viet Nam vets & ran over to Paris to collabrate with the eenemy.

I Loved Amsterdam, in 1988, for a week while attending the World Power (energy) Conference. Saw a drug deal going down right next to Dam Palace, but no harm/no foul. The folks were great (very polite & friendly), the art museums as well, the food, the arch.,... loved every thing about it. The Red Light District was similar to the French Quarter here, tons of good musicians and music, ( I saw a Japanese girl band playing Elvis) and way to many great beers to sample.
I learned while there, that Holland had the lowest teenage pregnancy rate in the world (Arkansas the highest) due to their health edu programs in their high schools. The Hague, and Delft were very nice, as well.
I hope to visit there again soon, on my trip to Riga.

I love A-Dam, but I've seen things tolerated there (on the street) that would have garnered multiple 911 calls in any City of the U.S. The beatings and robberies went unremarked and unreported.
There's a certain criminal class in A-Dam (up to 12% of the current population has been charged with a drug offense at some point in their lives) that works the middle ground of prostitution and drug-peddling.
The quick money is in car theft and robbery, and the bad guys know that.

Laughing. We should start a "Second" trend? There's a famous paradox where all the people in the world are ordered by the most interesting to the least interesting. The person identified as the least interesting is actually somewhat interesting in that he or she is the least interesting person in the world, so therefore they don't deserve to be the last person on the list.
On another note, I can't figure out if the US gov has hit upon a successful program with the cash for clunkers or as one poster put it, is just funding the next subprime loan market.
