We have arrived at a moment of extraordinary hope, a moment of great change but also great hope, a challenging moment in which we can all finally come together in a land of hope and change. And unicorns.

OK, I’ll stop.

No, Charles, don't stop.

Hopeychanginess needs mocking. Unmerciful, unending mockery.

You forgot the rainbows. None of this would be complete without the rainbows.

It's a great moment, a great moment to break out the shovels and start sifting through the bullshit that this morning's storm left all over Washington, DC.

Sen. Kennedy being taken away after having a seizure at the luncheon. What a surrealistic day.

10 twincitiesgirl  Tue, Jan 20, 2009 11:59:48am

Well, I was kind of hoping he could do something about the cold winters in Minnesota. I really miss the Twin Cities. How about it Mr President?

11 Jetpilot1101  Tue, Jan 20, 2009 12:00:18pm

I went home for lunch and there was a check from the government for the first mortgage payment of a house I don't even own but am planning to buy. At preciselly the time when Obama said "so help me God", my gas tank magically filled with gas.

Obama is the Messiah and I am his devoted mind numbed follower.

On another note, Chrysler is teaming with Fiat.

The company known for poor quality, poor customer service, and ignoring lemon laws, teaming with the company known as "Fix It Again, Tony".

Dr Jihad is skeptical that Obama will bring peace....
Arabs feel hope, suspicion about Obama

A Palestinian physician who practices in Amman advised fellow Arabs to cooperate with Mr. Obama and his administration.

"I believe he seeks political solutions, not war, to solve the problems dominating the global agenda and our own region: Iran, Afghanistan and the Palestinian issue," Dr. Jihad Barghouti said.

"Arabs, both ordinary people and their leaders, should stop their defiance and insults of the U.S. administration and the American people," the physician said. "'Yes, we can,' must be the way forward for us all."

Probably a different sort of "passing out" in the arab world. The passing out of candy seems to be the norm when they think they have seen a significant shift in their favour. I wonder if the candy is being passed out as we speak.

Breaking: health crises for Byrd and Kennedy.

Reports are coming in that Ted Kennedy had convulsions/seizures while attending a luncheon this afternoon. Reports are also saying that Robert Byrd also had some kind of medical emergency, but they vary - one report says that it occurred after seeing his friend Kennedy being removed by emergency personnel, while others report it was before.

A toast to the upcoming Obama Administration:

May the honeymoon be short. Lets get real ASAP.

109 lobo91  Tue, Jan 20, 2009 12:12:12pm

Reality Alert:

Europe opposes more troops for Afghanistan: poll

LONDON (Reuters) – Most voters in leading European countries believe their governments should resist any request by incoming U.S. President Barack Obama to send more troops to Afghanistan, according to an opinion poll published on Tuesday.

The Harris poll for the Financial Times showed "clear majorities" in Britain, France, Italy and Germany believed their governments must not send more forces to Afghanistan if Obama asked them to do so, the newspaper said.

Obama, who will be sworn into office later on Tuesday, has said he would make Afghanistan the central front in his fight against terrorism and has committed himself to sending more U.S. forces to tackle a worsening insurgency.

But many European allies have been reluctant to commit more troops to an increasingly dangerous operation.

So much for that honeymoon...

re: #71 albusteve

personally I feel nothing for Kennedy...I don't project like that so maybe I'm unfeeling and cold hearted...so be it

I do not profess to a heck of lot about US politics, but I see Ted kennedy as a man who got into the US senate on the coat-tails of his brothers, a man who would never run for president for fear of his life, a man who put his reputation and position ahead of the life of passenger in his car and truth died that day, as did she.

Missed the start of this thread typing my rant up. Repost from the last thread.

Late to the inauguration party.

Missed the oath. Caught the speech.

Speech seemed flat in both delivery, and content.

One line did piss me off big time. IMHO opinion clarifies for me that BHO does not like this country, the things it has accomplished, the things it stands for.

We remain a young nation, but in the words of Scripture, the time has come to set aside childish things.

Yes, Mr. President we are a young nation in span of history. We however are not young it our government. Since our inception all other nations have changed their form of government, we are the longest standing form of government. Among governments we are the adults. We have set the mark and all other nations have in the last 200 years moved in our direction not the other way. In that time a competing way has arisen, socialism. And socialism has proven to be a bankrupt philosophy. The remainder of the Thugs left, paint their regimes with facade of what we established, holding faux elections.

Among deeds we have been the adults of the planet. Upholding liberty around the world time and again. Spending our blood, our treasure to secure the liberty of others. There is no more mature, adult, selfless deed than that.

What childish things would you have us put aside? Our rights? Life? Liberty? Property? Happiness? Those are far from childish. We should never, by any means put away those things. Those where bought with blood are the most precious things and in no way childish.

Should we put away the free capitalist economy? The very thing that propelled us to our economy place in the world. That individuals are free to presue their talents, dreams and abilities to the maximum extent. That these individuals take full responsibility and credit for there lives, failures, and success, that the product of their labor, toil and sweat is theirs and theirs alone. That is not childish.

Are you speaking of charity? No nation is more charitable than we, from blood spilled on foreign lands, to food and medicine sent to disaster areas no nation is more generous than we.

Calling our past childish is a deep insult to the founders, the generations that have upheld and fought for the ideals. It desecrates the blood of patriots who died to establish and protect his nation.

I find this line most telling on the inner thoughts of our President. I find the line deeply disturbing.

The Real Gaza Massacre

The new Israeli combat tactics in Gaza were a great success. Between January 3rd, when Israeli ground forces first entered Gaza, until Israel declared a unilateral ceasefire on January 18th, Hamas fighters were useless against Israeli ground troops. So far, 13 Israelis and 1300 Palestinians have died in the fighting. Hamas combat units tended to be quickly wiped out. The Israelis were much more aggressive than they were two years ago in southern Lebanon, and this was largely the result of a training course all Israeli troops had to go through before entering Gaza, and growing anger at the ceaseless Hamas rocket attacks on Israel.

Two years ago, Israel opened a new urban warfare training center. The complex consists of 500 structures, including several multistory ones, duplicating what soldiers would encounter if they had to fight in, say, Gaza. The new center cost $40 million and was built with the help of the U.S. Army (which has a lot of recent experience fighting Arabs in urban areas).

As a result, most of the claimed 20,000 Hamas gunmen have deserted their units, leaving only some of the officers (5-10 percent of each unit) to carry on. By the second week of January, Israeli troops were mainly encountering Hamas officers in combat. Hamas had made elaborate plans to hit the Israelis with snipers, ambushes, remotely controlled bombs and booby traps in houses. But there were few Hamas fighters around to do all this, and the plans fell apart.

Even a special unit of about a hundred fighters, that had received combat training in Iran, was quickly wiped out when they fought the Israelis. This was very embarrassing for Iran, which had promised to turn the 20,000 Hamas gunmen into a crack fighting force. Back in Iran, this failure was blamed on the Arabs, who Iranians generally despise as lazy and stupid. Hamas doesn't know who to blame, although many Palestinians believe Hamas had deceived itself, and disappointed all Palestinians, and the Arab world as well.

Israel won. Hamas lost. Iran was humiliated.

Bush's Real Sin Was Winning in Iraq

As he leaves, he carries with him the near-universal opprobrium of the permanent class that inhabits our nation's capital. Yet perhaps the most important reason for this unpopularity is the one least commented on.

Here's a hint: It's not because of his failures. To the contrary, Mr. Bush's disfavor in Washington owes more to his greatest success. Simply put, there are those who will never forgive Mr. Bush for not losing a war they had all declared unwinnable.

If you choose this tact the childish party is that of Obama's. The name calling, corrupt politics, stolen elections, or do you think Chicago politics is "adult?" If we put away petty politics Obama should look in the mirror. He and his minions used petty politics to destroy opponents. His party defines corruption. Reid, Jefferson, Frank, Rangel, Pelosi, all would be out of office if they carried an (R).

As I said, there is no more "adult" nation than ours. If we put something away, we put something in it place. What is Obama proposing we put it its place? The failed policies of FDR, when the success of JFK and RWR are available. The policy of Europe to buy off our enemies in the hopes our throats are cut last. Put away the success of free market capitalism for the failures of socialist command economies? Put away the productivity of our land that lifts, inspires and feeds the world, for the phantasm of a green economy that will strangle the greatest economic engine on the planet.

If we put away petty politics Obama should look in the mirror. He and his minions used petty politics to destroy opponents. His party

This pretty much sums things up

An editorial from the London Daily Mail on Obama's VictoryTue, 01/06/2009 - 2:13pm by Trixie6

A victory for the hysterical Oprah Winfrey, the mad racist preacher Jeremiah Wright, the mainstream media who abandoned any sense of objectivity long ago, Europeans who despise America largely because they depend on her, comics who claim to be dangerous and fearless but would not dare attack genuinely powerful special interest groups. A victory for Obama-worshippers everywhere. A victory for the cult of the cult. A man who has done little with his life but has written about his achievements as if he had found the cure for cancer in between winning a marathon and building a nuclear reactor with his teeth. Victory for style over substance, hyperbole over history, rabble-raising over reality.

A victory for Hollywood, the most dysfunctional community in the world. Victory for Streisand, Spielberg, Soros and Sarandon. Victory for those who prefer welfare to will and interference to independence. For those who settle for group think and herd mentality rather than those who fight for individual initiative and the right to be out of step with meager political fashion.

Victory for a man who is no friend of freedom. He and his people have already stated that media has to be controlled so as to be balanced, without realizing the extraordinary irony within that statement. Like most liberal zealots, the Obama worshippers constantly speak of Fox and Limbaugh, when the vast bulk of television stations and newspapers are drastically liberal and anti-conservative. Senior Democrat Chuck Schumer said that just as pornography should be censored, so should talk radio. In other words, one of the few free and open means of popular expression may well be cornered and beaten by bullies who even in triumph cannot tolerate any criticism and opposition.

A victory for those who believe the state is better qualified to raise children than the family, for those who prefer teachers' unions to teaching and for those who are naively convinced that if the West is sufficiently weak towards its enemies, war and terror will dissolve as quickly as the tears on the face of a leftist celebrity.

A victory for social democracy even after most of Europe has come to the painful conclusion that social democracy leads to mediocrity, failure, unemployment, inflation, higher taxes and economic stagnation. A victory for intrusive lawyers, banal sentimentalists, social extremists and urban snobs.

Congratulations America!

US and Egyptian warships were scouring the Gulf of Aden and Red Sea

...an Iranian freighter carrying ...an estimated 60 tons of arms to replenish Hamas' depleted war stocks had set out from the Iranian Persian Gulf port of Bandar Abbas on Jan. 17.

The cargo consists of 50 Fajr rockets whose range is 50-75 km, scores of heavy Grad rockets, new, improved launchers whose angle of fire can be precisely adjusted, tons of high-quality explosives, submachine guns, rifles and pistols and armor-piercing missiles and shells (of types used successfully by Hizballah against Israeli tanks in 2006).

The shipment, the largest Tehran has ever consigned to the Palestinian Hamas in Gaza, includes also a large number of anti-personnel and anti-vehicle mines, equipment for assembling roadside bombs and advanced communications and night vision gear.

The Iranian ship aroused suspicions when Western spy satellites and surveillance stations spotted its change of registration after entering the Sea of Oman. Closer observation identified the cargo as a huge arms shipment.

Gaza war's outcome determined in first 4 minutes

The Israel air force demolished two key Hamas war systems in the first 4 minutes of its massive offensive on Gaza Saturday morning, Dec. 27, DEBKAfile's military sources report. The bombers destroyed six mosques in Gaza City which held the terrorists' biggest weapons arsenals and scores of "beehives" containing launchers primed for the simultaneous, automatic release of hundreds of powerful rockets against Israeli cities.

These launchers were rigged for precision-targeting in Israeli town centers. They were operated by a unit of 300 special Hamas operatives trained for their mission at a Syrian military bases under the instruction of Hizballah rocket specialists.

The aerial offensive knocked out 80 percent of the rockets Hamas had prepared to launch and saved Israel's southern cities. The Palestinian Islamists were left only with inferior projectiles. Therefore, 98 percent of the hundreds of missiles they managed to fire in the 22-day war missed their targets and exploded in open ground.

Answering questions about the extreme destruction wrought in Gaza and the high number of casualties – more than 1,300 - Israel commanders described combat conditions as the most complicated they had ever faced: Every second apartment building was booby-trapped and every third building concealed arms caches. Weapons were concealed under children's beds and in basements. Inside of fighting out in the open, Hamas gunmen by and large avoided engaging Israeli troops, relying on these death traps.

Monday, Jan. 19, the second day of the ceasefire, the second-echelon of the Hamas leadership emerged from their fortified bunkers after three weeks underground, claiming they had vanquished the Israeli enemy. The top leaders remained invisible. The homeless people picking their way through the rubble for their broken possessions were not exactly welcoming.

very interesting... and sometimes Debka is for real

Cripes! Does that mean I have to start throwing shoes, pie, and dirty diapers every time one of the Messiah's apostles shows up in public?

I know they'd do it for our guy, if he had been elected, but I just don't care that much and have too much else to do.

Did anyone else note when he was droning about the pride he has in soldiers who fought for America, from the Revolution to Vietnam, that he did not mention the Gulf War or Iraq? Very telling imho.

Change what he said or how we discuss it. Did I call him a village idiot? Did I call him Hitler? I criticized his choice of phrasing, I criticized the ideology behind that sentence based on everything I know of his upbringing, history, choices he's made and statements he has made.

My apologies for inferring that you specifically were being childish. It's just that both sides pick at statements based on their slant. I saw a call to be bipartisan, you saw it differently, and only Obama knows his real intent. Again, nothing in your comments was disrespectful or out of line.

He missed a lot of wars, but did mention Vietnam, not sure it was a purposeful omission.

IMHO, the sniping time is over, for a while. WE have a new president. Let's not start like the creationists by "researching" the gaps instead of focusing on the realities. OUR president now needs time and support to show what he, and we, are made of.

re: #138 avanti

You left off the preceding line in that paragraph which describes the reason for the childish quote and took the line out of that context. .

"On this day, we come to proclaim an end to the petty grievances and false promises, the recriminations and worn out dogmas, that for far too long have strangled our politics. "

Exactly right. And that line has to be my favorite. Let's see how many of President O's promises will be false. Let's see how soon the petty grievances last. Let's see the Capital Critters leave the outgoing administration alone and not hound them with bogus witch hunts.

My BS meter was saturated long before he even said this, and that line sent it in to conniptions.

You are all great people but what do you expect? America has been dumbing-down for years, glorifying celebutards like Paris Hilton and being dominated by a vacuous and intellectually incontinent media.
Eventually we were bound to get a celebrity-cult of personality type President that looks young and athletic, has cute kids and a loyal wife.

Its the President Obama Sitcom people, with 4 years worth of shows. Style rules, substance is just good word-play.

Me, I am going to look for a safe cave and hope to ride out the Obama nakba.

OK, call me whatever names you want but I'm hopen Obama does well. As a fellow Chicagoan and Sox fan I have to give him the benefit of the doubt. :)

"The Wall Street Journal" had the best line: The Opacity of Hope.
How will BHO govern? No one knows. He has never been the head of an organization (business, local, state, or national) before. He has never been at the desk where the buck stops. We have no evidence on which to base any conjectures about how he makes decisions.
Two extraordinary editorials in the Journal today (1/21/09):
1) Juan Williams: do not judge the guy based on the color of his skin, judge him on his actions.
2) Lincoln comparison: should BHO expect no dissent? What is the vision for the future that BHO will bring to us? Lincoln faced substantial opposition, especially from Seward. Bush II faced overwhelming opposition, even from within his own party. What will BHO fight for?
3) Socialism is not a good path to follow. I know of no prior socialist government which has led to prosperity for all. The same applies to John Maynard Keynes. Japan just finished a 10-year Keynesian experiment, which led nowhere.
4) Government controls have never led to prosperity for all, either. Glaring example: an Obama proposal will have all COBRA responsibility devolve on the Federal Government. Currently COBRA responsibility resides with the business which arranged the health plan for the former employee. Business has a vested interest in limiting COBRA. The Federal Government has a vested interest in prolonging COBRA, as it will constitute a new government agency.

A little late to this thread. I listened as much as I could stand to various interviews prior to the swearing in.

Various celebrities who have experienced enlightenment and feelings of they never felt before --all inspired by Obama! And they are now going to be better persons!

Apparently, Obama has inspired and invented American pride and patriotism! Now that the "blues" are in control of not only Congress but the White House, we are no longer "red and blue" but all united.

Not ONE seemed to have picked up on the irony that it was THEY who promoted, encouraged and verbalized the hatred towards the president and nothing he did or did not do would ever be "right."

The fact that the "losers" this time are more tolerant and less hateful seems to escape them and of course, they are crediting our new President for the lack of hostility and graciousness he has been shown by those who opposed him.
