Ted Kennedy Rushed to Hospital

US News • Views: 2,431

Senator Ted Kennedy collapsed and went into seizures at the inaugural luncheon.

Sen. Ted Kennedy, D-Mass., who is battling a brain tumor, was taken away from the congressional luncheon in convulsions.

Kennedy was at a table with Sen. John Kerry, D-Mass., Vice President Mondale and Mrs. Mondale, and others. While at the table, Kennedy began having seizures that lasted for several minutes. As they were carrying Kennedy out of the room, he was still seizing. President Barack Obama went out of the room with him, but he is back in the luncheon room now.

UPDATE at 1/20/09 1:22:31 pm:

Latest word is that Kennedy and Robert Byrd (who also collapsed) are both doing better…

Let's hope everything's alright. I wasn't a fan, but no one deserves that. I hope he and his family make it through this.

As a person with Epilepsy, I hope Sen Kennedy is well.

Unfortunately, such seizures are, I think, rather common after brain surgery. I know several folks who had to go on anti-seizure medication after such surgeries.

This could be a bad sign of scar tissue developing in the brain. This is why my son has to take seizure medication, but the underlying cause is different.

I just heard on the radio the Sen. Bird had to be taken out on a stretcher also. He became ill after Kennedy was taken out.

It is hard to watch, isn't it? A good friend had a brain tumor and while surgery took care of the cancer, she is 100% disabled as a result and on serious seizure meds.

Oh man. My mother had brain cancer and when she had a seizure several months after her initial surgery to remove the tumor, it meant the cancer had returned in the form of several new tumors. Let's hope it's just the medication or something.

No, it was operable, and they operated. The problem is, well, it's the brain. That's always a delicate and problematic thing to cut into.

Not good. I hope this is a simple case of backing too far off the seizure medication. Had a co-worker who intentionally did that for an important meeting in order to temporarily avoid that "foggy" feeling he had from the medication. He went into seizures in the meeting and we had to call 911. He was ok the next day (but very sad to say eventually passed from the brain tumor). I wish Kennedy and his family the best of luck.

Yes. My mom died of breast cancer and my wife and I cared for her to the end, so she could stay home with her pets. It was awful to see her in the last few days before she passed. It's true that there are times when passing is a blessing.

84 Dainn  Tue, Jan 20, 2009 12:20:22pm

I'm not sure Sen Kennedy having a seizure is a sign of progression in his disease. It must have been incredibly difficult for him to sit through the inauguration then move to the luncheon under those hot lights. My guess is that his body couldn't take it and he'll be rehydrated in the hospital, given some electrolytes and sent home.

Sen Byrd had some sort of eating difficulties.

I hope they both get better very soon.

what's the life expectancy of someone who is suffering from brain cancer?

Depends. On the type, stage when diagnosed, health of the patient, etc....
Kennedy has malignant glioma, The prognosis for patients with high-grade gliomas is generally poor, and is especially so for older patients. Of 10,000 Americans diagnosed each year with malignant gliomas, about half are alive 1 year after diagnosis, and 25% after two years.

OT: N.H. man who helped develop microwave oven dies

NASHUA, N.H. (AP) — Robert Decareau, who helped invent the processes necessary to create the microwave oven, has died in Nashua.

Decareau, who lived in Amherst, was 82. He died Sunday after suffering from Alzheimer's for the last 17 years.

According to his family, Decareau was a Massachusetts native who went to work for Raytheon after earning his doctorate in chemistry. It was there that he started working on microwave energy food applications, and he was one of the first to call himself a food scientist.

Decareau's daughter, Karen Ross of Auburn, Maine, says she remembers her father experimenting with a refrigerator-sized prototype microwave oven in the family's basement in the 1960s.

My son had a grand mal seizure in the summer and it was the scariest thing I have ever, ever gone through with him. At the time, it felt like the Angel of Death was hovering around in the room. It took me about a week to feel like myself again.

I would urge everyone to brush up on CPR/first aid-it's so important. You never know when you will be called upon by fate to use it-and a life can be saved because of you.

So-just as a public service note-if someone is seizing, lay them on their side, allowing their tongue to fall out so they don't choke on their tongue-don't try to put your hand down on their tongue...Never transport a seizing person on your own-always let paramedics transport to hospital.

Perhaps any paramedic/firemen or other first-aid trained lizards could add a few points.

# Stay calm
# Prevent injury
During the seizure, you can exercise your common sense by insuring there is nothing within reach that could harm the person if she struck it.
# Pay attention to the length of the seizure
# Make the person as comfortable as possible
# Keep onlookers away
# Do not hold the person down
If the person having a seizure thrashes around there is no need for you to restrain them. Remember to consider your safety as well
# Do not put anything in the person's mouth
Contrary to popular belief, a person having a seizure is incapable of swallowing their tongue so you can breathe easy in the knowledge that you do not have to stick your fingers into the mouth of someone in this condition.

Senator Kennedy is dying, whether he has a short-term recovery or not. Obama's victory is a huge win for the Kennedy clan, who chose Obama as their candidate in the Kennedys' struggle with the Clintons for control of the Democratic Party nationally. At least for now, the Kennedys are triumphant.

Sen. Ted Kennedy is blessed with a devoted, very helpful wife, Vickie (his second). She is from a prominent Louisiana political family and a good gal.
She was my wife's (my first) roomie at Tulane, and I am glad for Teddy that they are together. She knows how to manage his life now, in a fine fashion. I wish them both the best, and a speedy recovery.

Senator Kennedy has lived to see that triumph. It may well be his last harrah.

No his last hurrah was to get his niece into the Senate.

My son had one on his 21st birthday. It is gut wrenching, to say the least.

Absolutely, you never try to hold down a seizing person. The only exception to that would be in very rare situations, the patient is is a place where they could fall while seizing then if possible you should try to keep them from falling by moving them or blocking their fall.

As a New Yorker, I'm especially sensitive to the spectacle of a thoroughly unqualified woman (Caroline Kennedy) ascending to the U.S. Senate by virtue of her blood line. On the other hand, a seat in the U.S. Senate is an undemanding job that can be filled by a mediocrity, as the much of the current membership demonstrates.

The Kennedys have a lot to offer N.Y. Governor Paterson in exchange for the appointment of Caroline: plenty of money for his next election campaign, President Barack Obama to campaign for him, and the support of the U.S. government bureaucracy, including plenty of federal money to lubricate the governor's election. Former Clinton Administration HUD Secretary Andrew Cuomo did something similar to help Hillary Clinton win her U.S. Senate seat by flooding N.Y. with HUD money for questionable "urban renewal" projects. This go-around will be no different.

My ex-wife was epileptic, but I never saw her have a siezure. Her's was petite mal, anyway. She had had to take medicine as a kid, but I don't remember if she was still on it or not.

We had a guy at Red Lobster that had a full-blown grand mal siezure. he looked like he was dying. He had it realy bad, and he'd just forgotten to take his medicine that day. He felt it coming on, and got off the line, which was good. There's way too much stuff to get hurt on on the line.

I think the hardest part for me was the breathing. It just sounded horrible. I'm sure Kennedy scared a lot of folks today.

He wrote the speech himself. And that's stating the obvious, any politician can be held to what he says versus what he does.

And I wasn't even commenting on if he will or will not follow through on this statement, I was just suggesting that this comment is not going to sit very well with the radical Muslims who thought he was going to be a sucking up to them.

FINAL ABUSE... Bush Mocked As He Arrives at Inauguration

U.S. President George W. Bush and Vice President Dick Cheney watch Barack Obama during the inauguration of Obama as the 44th President of the United States in Washington, January 20, 2009. (REUTERS/Rick Wilking)

The Hill reported, via Drudge:

The crowd packed on the west side of the Capitol grounds serenaded President Bush in mocking fashion when he took to the inaugural stage alongside Vice President Dick Cheney.

"Nah nah nah nah, hey hey, good-bye," a section of the crowd chanted.

The crowd packed immediately below the podium received Bush in stony silence when he took his seat on the stage surrounding the podium where Barack Obama was scheduled to take the oath office to become the 44th president of the United States.

The jeers are among the final public feedback Bush will receive as president.

First Lady Laura Bush and Lynne Cheney received light applause when they were announced to the crowd.

Bush is scheduled to depart from the East Front of the Capitol by helicopter after the swearing-in ceremony.

Obama received the loudest sustained cheers from thousands who chanted his name.

And, once again it didn't matter that his daughters were there to witness the abuse...

I don't think anyone is suggesting that the death of a loved one is funny, but I think it's great to be able to laugh at something that person would have found funny, and comforting to think that they would want you to be laughing, living and enjoying your life even though they are not here in this world with you. Who knows-perhaps they are laughing along with you, or waiting for that chance?

I actually chuckled during my sis in laws service. Now understand she was a friend and a sister for over 30 years so its not just an in law joke.
We always laughed and made jokes about her very very raspy voice. It was even worse when she was trying to speak loudly . Well just as I was looking at her my mind wandering through the things we had shared over the years I was thinking of the jokes about her voice, the song that was playing had the line"When they hear your sweet voice sing".

On Inauguration Day, when it officially becomes Obama's turn to take on this and other problems, this self-aggrandizing prick sticks his oar in the water yet again. Can we get a man-eating rabbit to gnaw on his toes, please?

His book probably has a plan like this one I wrote when he visited Mashaal. It is dated a little, because I wrote it during the campaign:

Carter, Mashaal Announce Plan for Mideast Peace

Damascus. (CNN – Caliphate-Nazi News)

Former President Jimmy Carter and Hamas Leader Khaled Mashaal announced the final solution for Mideast peace. Hamas and Syria have agreed to recognize the state of Israel, after Carter's plan is put into motion.

The plan involves the Israeli government being taken over by the UN and the US State Department. “This is the culmination of all the years of my presidency,” the Nobel Peace Prize winner Carter said. “We all agree the problem that is preventing peace in the Mideast is that Israel is run by Jews; therefore, by replacing their government with one that is willing to understand the concerns of their neighbors, there will be peace.”

The Jews will still have rights to a homeland, but they will be concentrated in the Negev. “The Jews were able to make the desert bloom, so they should be quite comfortable in the camps that will be constructed there,” said former President Carter.

Reaction from world leaders was strong approval.

US Secretary of State Condoleeza Rice said “I salute former President Carter for his effort, and look forward to my new position as Prime Minister of Israel.” She then left just as the Israeli press arrived, having been forced to enter through the back door.

Barack Obama cheered the result. “I have known for 20 years that a solution like this was needed; finally there will be peace. I have offered former President Carter the position of Secretary of State, when I win the election.” He also said that he would now go under the name B. Hussein Obama.

Hillary Clinton also praised the deal but said “I had almost negotiated this deal, while under rocket fire, but the signed papers disappeared when I went to ask Bill about a stained blue burkha that I found under the desk in the meeting tent.”

John McCain, the Republican nominee for President, said something different, showing he is out of touch with world opinion.

“The UN, the Ummah of Nations, strongly supports this peace treaty.” Secretary General Ban Ki-Moonbat also said, “We have already recognized Mahmoud Abbas as the Israeli ambassador to the UN, and he will be moving in 'as soon as the stench is gone' from the rooms formerly occupied by Jews.”

The president of Iran, Ahmadinejad, said “We welcome this development, but we will not cease in our peaceful nuclear program as long as a single Jew remains alive.”

Hugo Chavez, president of Venezuela, also praised the accord. “Venezuela is pleased the world has come to understand the problems of our world. We have started rounding up Venezuelan Jews to send them to the new camps in Israel.”

The Saudi Arabian government issued a statement that “In honor of these historic accords, we will call for a 'free gas' day once they are implemented. We will even give Jews free gas, but of a very special kind.”

Adolph Hitler could not be reached for comment.

And then there is this...

Strengthen the Nuclear Non-Proliferation Treaty: Obama and Biden will crack down on nuclear proliferation by strengthening the Nuclear Non-Proliferation Treaty so that countries like North Korea and Iran that break the rules will automatically face strong international sanctions.

And this...

Move Toward a Nuclear Free World: Obama and Biden will set a goal of a world without nuclear weapons, and pursue it.

8:29 PM Some of you may recall that I said that some of the rocket strikes were a bit ironic. Now that there is a lull (tahidya) it's probably OK to tell you all. At least 3 of the rockets hit Yitzchak Rabin Street - but in 3 different cities.

In other news, 9 mortars and rockets hit Israel today, and the IAF attacked the Kassam rocket sources.

It was finally acknowledged that IDF troops were shot at today at the Kissufim junction in 2 separate incidents.

It is unlikely that Israel will respond in force to these attacks before elections.

5:30 PM Channel 10 Israel TV reports (Alon Ben David). Despite the 2 shooting incidents today against IDF troops by Hamas, (and at least one confirmed mortar launch) Israel will not retaliate until after the Israeli elections.

'That foggy feeling from anti-seizure medication' makes life difficult for many epileptics. Always felt like I had had a couple beers too many when on either dilantin or tegritol. Gradually withdrew from the medications and made sure I get enough sleep (my trigger) and have been seizure free for nearly ten years.

Ted faces a rough way to go and the seizures leave you feeling as though you had just been mugged. You find muscles where you didn't know you had muscles and the ever present threat of destroying other organs makes life hard for epileptics.

She had been a good mother and a good woman, and there was nothing left but sweetness and happiness. Well, mourning, but no bitterness or regrets.

The funniest moment was when my uncle, in his eulogy, meant to say that his mother had been supportive of him in his life. What he said was, "I can't think of anything I did that my mother didn't approve of."

One of my aunts, sitting in the front row, raised her hand.

I'm not a fan of either Byrd's or Kennedy's politics, but I wish them both well, especially since they are both in poor health, and have been leaders in the Senate for so long.

Question: Wouldn't it be best for both men to step down from their Senate seats due to their health issues...I wonder if they realize that they may be hurting their constituents by staying in office ?

re: #344 EmmmieG

When my grandmother died we had some laughs at her funeral.

When Senator Kennedy goes, I hope his children will be as at peace with it as my mother, aunts, and uncle were.

Lots of warmth at our "Granma E's" funeral as well. Some folks are irreplaceable, and she and her husband allen were certainly in that category.

Civil rights were always important to the Kennedys.

They may have paid lip service to civil rights, but it was the Republicans of that era who really wanted civil rights. Most Democrats wanted nothing to do with civil rights. Read some of LBJ's speeches to the Senate. He was a dyed in the wool racist who's (not so)Great Society program did more to hurt minorities than any other government program.

re: #302 Walter L. Newton

I'm very skeptical that he wrote the speech himself. All Presidents, even Reagan, use speech writers. There's nothing shameful about it. It is SOP.

If Obama did
write it, well, good for him. It is a good speech, but it is still
going to have to be backed by actions. I know Biden got a measure of
hell for saying it, but I agree with him that Obama is going to be
tested by our enemies. Probably very soon.

He's been running for the Office for the last two years, and there is nothing that he has done that gives me any confidence that he is capable of leading this country through the troubled times we are in.

Check his new White House web site. Right on top it states: "White House.gov will be a central part of
President Obama's pledge to make his
the most transparent and accountable
administration in American history."

Starting tomorrow, I bet ya, he goes behind very closed doors for the next several weeks, making deals to line up his agenda, in private. Look at the bow shot he got from Miss Nancy 2 days ago. Game on, and it will not be "most transparent".

ok...funeral laughs...my grand father was a real joker. Him and my grandmother went to a funeral for one of her relatives many years ago..maybe the 20's or 30's...anyhow in those days for some reason it was customary for the immediate family to return later to the gravesite after the graveside funeral service, don't ask me why, I have no idea. But in those days when a family memeber died it was not uncommon for the body to be laid out in the house before actual burial. so they go back to the gravesite, the box is in the hole, but not covered over yet..so my grandfather being the wise ass he was, leans over the hole, and yells down something like " hey! how's it going down there?" to get a laugh. as he's doing this, his cigars in front pocket fall in the hole and land on top of the casket. they were $1 cigars and that was real expensive in those days. So my grand father climbs into the grave to get his cigars. then the problem started...he couldn't climb back out. he wasn't a real tall guy. the rest of the family is laughing their ass off, my grand mother cursing him and embarassed as hell..they finally found one of the cemetary workers who went and got a ladder to put in the hole so he could climb out. a family story that will live on thru the ages..:)

If he sticks to this promise, I won't complain.

"With old friends and former foes, we will work tirelessly to lessen the nuclear threat, and roll back the specter of a warming planet. We will not apologize for our way of life, nor will we waver in its defense, and for those who seek to advance their aims by inducing terror and slaughtering innocents, we say to you now that our spirit is stronger and cannot be broken; you cannot outlast us, and we will defeat you."

I just heard that the Grand Mal seizures lasted from 5-10 minutes. With a glioblastoma multiforme, that is not good. I am more sure now that the malignancy, sadly is metastacizing.

He has been a true gentleman about his illness. For whatever I think of him, he has been the father to his 2 assassinated brothers' children for so many years. He did not have to do it. The number of tragedies in the Kennedy family boggle the mind.

His personal life has been repugnant in so many ways, but I cannot imagine what all the deaths, etc., and being the son of a Jew hating, nazi-loving father did. Amazingly, none of the Kennedy sons and daughters are like this.

Not all families have a man who survived a plane crash in 1964, and through it all fought back.

With all their millions, he could have sat back and lived the life of the very rich and famous. He did choose to serve, not just to sit on his ass.

He has done some good, and that is what we should remember, and wish him a Refuah Shlema..a complete healing.

That's very true. I was thinking of murdered in office, or having you or your family ruined due to obsessive power grabs by opponents. Look at Palin these days. This is why my father told me he refused open doors to the US Senate.
He cared more about his family (his wife & nine kids), than personal ambition.

Even with all the privileges and perks, Teddy's life has been no bed of roses in many respects, and I don't agree with any of his policies.

381 pittrader1988  Tue, Jan 20, 2009 1:46:17pm

I feel badly for both men. I agreed with none of their policies.

However, this brings up a very good point. When folks like Strom Thurmond, Robert Byrd, Kennedy are in office in the shape that they are in (in the case of Strom, was in!) they really cannot fulfill the duties of the office. Byrd cannot speak, he cannot walk, he cannot hear. It is debatable if he has the capacity to grasp the issues at hand. Can he really engage in a dialogue about domestic policy regarding derivatives? Doubt it. Both Kennedy and Byrd ought to resign out of the respect to the office, and the country. Thurmond should have too.

I was in DC and ran into Thurmond coming out of the Senate. He was supported (carried), by two aids and looked to be in a lot of pain from being carried. There is no way that he was capable of being a Senator. We have an age limit for the bottom end of being a Senator, we ought to have an age limit for the top end. We also ought to say if you have an incurable illness, it's in the best interest of the country to resign.

In the case of a President, there is a structure in place to take care of these things. If Obama were to be diagnosed with lung cancer, Biden would take over. If Kennedy goes down, no one can pick up the ball.

Not so sure about an age limit, perhaps there should be a "Health and Physical" test done to all senators, regardless of age. I've known some pretty spry 70 year olds that could whup the pants off of some 50 year olds I know. Granted the 77 year old I remember was a merchant marine engineer for almost all of his life, so climbing up and down stairs, crawling up in piping does well to keep you fit.

Agreed. I know an 89 year old retired Marine (and Korean Vet) who could run circles around my 72 year old father. Also, what if a 45 year old Senator has a car wreck and suffers severe brain damage? There needs to be some sort of test or method of removal in the event of incapacitation.

389 pittrader1988  Tue, Jan 20, 2009 2:05:07pm

re: #386 Hengineer

I think that you can find exceptions to the rule. I know some 20 year olds that would make better Representatives and Senators than what we have.

Statistics show that after a certain elder age, you don't think as well. Even seasoned stock traders that have been involved in markets their entire lives say they don't think as fast as they used to, so they leave younger people to manage their money after a certain age.

I don't know where that cut off is, but I assume it's between the ages of 80-85. I think that is a good time for them to hang it up. Problem is, suppose you are 78, and running for another Senate term? Everyone would know from day one you are a lame duck. It would make a difference for committee chairs, and because we run our system as a pork barrel system-it would affect the state the representative came from.

As much as I disagree with Kennedy, I basically believe he has the interests of the US at heart. He might be misguided as to the best way the US should be run, but (leaving out a certain incident), I don't think he is evil.

I'll reserve wishing bad things on real terrorists.

Being a resident of the People's Republic of Massachusetts and considering the fecal laws he has helped to pass over the years, I can tell you that he does not have the interests of the US at heart.

However, I agree with reserving the desire for bad things to happen to real terrorists. All I wish is for him to have a long life and a long retirement starting right now.

401 Sloan  Wed, Jan 21, 2009 9:34:17am

Both Senators Byrd and Kennedy have my prayers and best thoughts for a speedy recovery.

Although I wonder aloud if it isn't time for both of them to think about stepping down, I suspect that both men are the type who would rather "die in the saddle," so to speak. It wouldn't surprise me to find out that they have had discussions with their respective governors about possible successors, should the need arise.

If they can keep going, and still do their jobs, more power to them. But if not...well, we've just had a lesson from President Bush on how to bow out with dignity and grace. I hope they will know when to do the same.
