To add to the sappiness....
Zoo's baby elephant turns five months old
Samudra, born Aug. 23, 2008, had a rough start to life when his mother, Rose-Tu, became confused after giving birth and nearly trampled him. Elephant keepers quickly intervened and were able to prevent the new mother from causing harm to her baby. Lee believes Rose-Tu became confused because she had never seen a birth before. Until Samudra's arrival, she had been the last elephant born at the zoo.
Zoo staff worked around the clock during the calf's first week of life to help ensure the critical reintroduction to Rose-Tu was working. The success rate for human-reared elephants is pretty low, Lee noted, so keepers "wanted more than anything for that mother-calf bond to become a strong one."
"It took a while," said Lee. "But now Rose-Tu is a loving and protective mother to Sam."

pink elephants on parade
[Video]
People donate stuffed animals to the fire department to give to kids during emergencies. One day a large stuffed pink elephant showed up. The medics adopted it and put in the medic unit. In the patients line of sight.
Whenever a drunk or druggie got on board, they'd invariable ask about the pink elephant. The medics would say, "elephant, what elephant."

Though not ideal, but the National Zoo has a great place for elephants. They aren't in cages, they are in this huge field that looks like their natural habitat. They can run and roam. Good news is the lions and tigers have their own, very separate, habitat!

As a kid I lived in India. One our school field trips was a week long visit to Kanha National Park. They load you on to an elephant and you tour the jungle all day. I can still remember the thrill of being on an elephant and standing 20 feet away from a wild tiger. No leash, no fence, nothing but air between you and a wild tiger. Exhilarating.

How to catch a white elephant: Go to an place where there are white elephants. Bring with you a muffin (with raisins). Climb a tree. When the white elephant is close, drop the muffin (with raisins) in front of it. The white elephant will be happy, and eat the muffin (with raisins). White elephants like muffins (with raisins). Repeat this procedure for five days in a row. After the fifth day, the white elephant will be used to its daily muffin (with raisins). The sixth day you climb the tree, bringing with you a muffin (without raisins). Drop the muffin (without raisins) as usual. When the white elephant finds out that the muffin (without raisins) lacks rasins, it will darken in anger. And then you catch it the same way you catch an ordinary grey elephant.

A Descendant of Abu Lahab or 'Flying Elephant's and Pigs'.
Saudi Arabia’s King Abdullah remained tight-lipped over the entire course of the barbaric massacre of Gaza and its defenseless people by the criminal Zionist regime. He even encouraged the butchery based on the existing evidence and as confessed by Zionist President Shimon Pres and Prime Minister Ehud Olmert. More importantly, he banned public protests in Saudi Arabia during the 22-day genocide in Gaza.
A day after the ceasefire (January 19), he rather awkwardly tried to discard or at least trim down his shameful collaboration with the Zionist regime in the slaughter of Gaza during an economic summit of Arab leaders in Kuwait.1-The state-run media in Saudi Arabia, such as Al-Arabia, talked about an Arab channel of compromise”. Several American and Western media outlets also quoted King Abdullah as saying that “a drop of Palestinian blood is much more precious than all the world’s treasures” in their columns and clumsy - read ridiculous and silly - analyses.
King Abdullah’s comments in support of the people of Gaza and its martyrs should be taken on a face-value as unlike the buzzed-up media outcry of the “Arabian channel of compromise”, King Abdullah once again voiced his support for the Zionist regime and justified its barbaric crimes!
We.Have.Arrived.

Several years ago, while visiting the Columbus Zoo, I was witness to a conversation, if you could call it that, between a gigantic African elephant and her keeper. Cool, that's the Zoo I spent much of my childhood at.
Being a zoo club member got me into places where the public can't go.
I must admit though, I will never, ever return there.
Many of the animals have crappy, too small enclosures.
The last time I went I walked by the grizzly bear enclosure and the bear was bored to the point of pacing. Same steps, same head shaking over and over. Looked very sad.
I walked around some more and came back the the grizz about 2 hours later...still pacing the same steps with the same head movements. I found a worker there and pointed out the bears serious problem and she just blew me off like I was some animal lover nut case.
I then told her loud enough for anyone within hearing distance that the bears mental state was nothing more than TORTURE and I will never come back here ever again. totally disgusting.
You want to see live animals? Watch them on TV...zoo's are inhumane and totally useless as the animals are not in their natural habitats...No way they are going to act as they would in the wild. Zoo's suck huge.
