We have designed our civilization based on science and technology and at the same time arranged things so that almost no one understands anything at all about science and technology. This is a clear prescription for disaster.

That depends on how you define "billion". If you're in North America, France, or the Netherlands, 1 billion = 109. Anywhere else in the world, 1 billion = 1012 (and 109 = 1 milliard)

Some say there is bi-partisan agreement over the budget.

It's true, both sides do agree that the plan stinks:

In the left corner, an over stimulated apostate at the Huff-Po!

a strongly worded warning for President Obama: "Quit spending money you don't have, because our kids - it isn't just our kids who are going to pay for it, we're going to pay for it and this crisis is going to get a lot worse if we don't start controlling our spending."

(What manner of sorcery is this?!)

And in the right corner:

The biggest losers from a federal bailout are taxpayers who live in fiscally responsible states. They played by the rules and resisted extravagant new spending programs--and will be rewarded with higher taxes to bail out states that went on unaffordable spending sprees. [1]

The Dragon In My Garage (Part 1/2)
by Carl Sagan

"A fire-breathing dragon lives in my garage"

Suppose (I'm following a group therapy approach by the psychologist Richard Franklin) I seriously make such an assertion to you. Surely you'd want to check it out, see for yourself. There have been innumerable stories of dragons over the centuries, but no real evidence. What an opportunity!

"Show me," you say. I lead you to my garage. You look inside and see a ladder, empty paint cans, an old tricycle -- but no dragon.

"Where's the dragon?" you ask.

"Oh, she's right here," I reply, waving vaguely. "I neglected to mention that she's an invisible dragon."

You propose spreading flour on the floor of the garage to capture the dragon's footprints.

"Good idea," I say, "but this dragon floats in the air."

Then you'll use an infrared sensor to detect the invisible fire.

"Good idea, but the invisible fire is also heatless."

You'll spray-paint the dragon and make her visible.

"Good idea, but she's an incorporeal dragon and the paint won't stick." And so on. I counter every physical test you propose with a special explanation of why it won't work.

Now, what's the difference between an invisible, incorporeal, floating dragon who spits heatless fire and no dragon at all? If there's no way to disprove my contention, no conceivable experiment that would count against it, what does it mean to say that my dragon exists? Your inability to invalidate my hypothesis is not at all the same thing as proving it true. Claims that cannot be tested, assertions immune to disproof are veridically worthless, whatever value they may have in inspiring us or in exciting our sense of wonder. What I'm asking you to do comes down to believing, in the absence of evidence, on my say-so. The only thing you've really learned from my insistence that there's a dragon in my garage is that something funny is going on inside my head. You'd wonder, if no physical tests apply, what convinced me. The possibility that it was a dream or a hallucination would certainly enter your mind. But then, why am I taking it so seriously? Maybe I need help. At the least, maybe I've seriously underestimated human fallibility. Imagine that, despite none of the tests being successful, you wish to be scrupulously open-minded. So you don't outright reject the notion that there's a fire-breathing dragon in my garage. You merely put it on hold. Present evidence is strongly against it, but if a new body of data emerge you're prepared to examine it and see if it convinces you. Surely it's unfair of me to be offended at not being believed; or to criticize you for being stodgy and unimaginative -- merely because you rendered the Scottish verdict of "not proved."

The Dragon In My Garage (Part 2/2)
by Carl Sagan

Imagine that things had gone otherwise. The dragon is invisible, all right, but footprints are being made in the flour as you watch. Your infrared detector reads off-scale. The spray paint reveals a jagged crest bobbing in the air before you. No matter how skeptical you might have been about the existence of dragons -- to say nothing about invisible ones -- you must now acknowledge that there's something here, and that in a preliminary way it's consistent with an invisible, fire-breathing dragon.

Now another scenario: Suppose it's not just me. Suppose that several people of your acquaintance, including people who you're pretty sure don't know each other, all tell you that they have dragons in their garages -- but in every case the evidence is maddeningly elusive. All of us admit we're disturbed at being gripped by so odd a conviction so ill-supported by the physical evidence. None of us is a lunatic. We speculate about what it would mean if invisible dragons were really hiding out in garages all over the world, with us humans just catching on. I'd rather it not be true, I tell you. But maybe all those ancient European and Chinese myths about dragons weren't myths at all.

Gratifyingly, some dragon-size footprints in the flour are now reported. But they're never made when a skeptic is looking. An alternative explanation presents itself. On close examination it seems clear that the footprints could have been faked. Another dragon enthusiast shows up with a burnt finger and attributes it to a rare physical manifestation of the dragon's fiery breath. But again, other possibilities exist. We understand that there are other ways to burn fingers besides the breath of invisible dragons. Such "evidence" -- no matter how important the dragon advocates consider it -- is far from compelling. Once again, the only sensible approach is tentatively to reject the dragon hypothesis, to be open to future physical data, and to wonder what the cause might be that so many apparently sane and sober people share the same strange delusion.

Why policemen always walk the streets in teams of three?

The partners in the police team are always chosen in such a way that one of them knows how to read, the other how to write, and the third one, naturally, has to keep watch over those two intellectuals.

A man, called to an audit by the IRS, asked his accountant for advice on what to wear. 'Wear your shabbiest clothing. Let him think you are a pauper.'

Then he asked his lawyer the same question, but got the opposite advice. 'Do not let them intimidate you. Wear your most elegant suit and tie.'

Confused, the man went to his rabbi, told him of the conflicting advice, and requested some resolution of the dilemma. 'Let me tell you a story,' replied the rabbi. 'A woman, about to be married, asked her mother what to wear on her wedding night. 'Wear a heavy, long, flannel nightgown that goes right up to your neck.' But when she asked her best friend, she got conflicting advice. 'Wear your most sexy negligee, with a V neck right down to your navel.'

The man protested: 'What does all this have to do with my problem with the IRS?' 'No matter what you wear, you are going to get screwed.'

I assume you're talking about the Victorian fires?

Info and updates from Tim Blair:

Several Victorian towns are on alert as fires approach. The death toll has now reached 108. With the number of homeless too great for agencies to quickly cope with, they are being taken in by anyone with a roof. “It doesn’t matter whether you know your neighbours or not,” said a rescue worker on last night’s news. “You soon will.”

UPDATE. Now there are fears the toll will double.

UPDATE II. A map of fatality locations.

UPDATE III. Road closures. Also, 7800 homes are without power.

...and, proving that no event is so bad that San Francisco can't make it tackier and more tasteless:

VOICES NEEDED

Just as they used Hurricane Katrina, warmenists are preparing to use Australia’s fires:

I’m an American climate activist. My heart goes out to all suffering this devastation. I also appeal to you to tell your stories, in blogs or wherever you can; we need your voices to help get climate change laws and treaties passed. Many tried to escape the acrid smoke in their cars but some did not make it, trees exploding and blocking their exit.

Victoria Harvey said a local businessman watched as a car in which his two children were sheltering went up in flames. "He put his kids in the car, turned around to go grab something from the house, then his car was on fire with his kids in it and they burned," she told the Australian Associated Press.

Marie Jones said a badly burnt man carrying his infant daughter told her his wife and other child had been killed. "He was so badly burnt. He had skin hanging off him everywhere and he said 'Look, I've lost my wife, I've lost my other kid, I just need you to save [my daughter]'," Jones said.

Survivors said the devastated areas looked as though they had been hit by a nuclear bomb, and those who lit the blazes "must pay".

"How can people do this? If the coppers can't get them, and someone else finds them, they'll kill them," Jarrod Champion, who found the body of a friend, told The Herald Sun. Jay Cherie from Kinglake Central told ABC her family had no warning of what was to come. "My little girl was saying to me, 'Mum am I going to see my friends again?', she also said to me, 'Mum am I going to live tomorrow?'."

The thing that boils my blood most is that these fires were started on a day where our dry, dry, tinder box state reached the temperature of 116.7 F +wind.
We were warned that if fire broke out it would be worse and more devastating than Ash Wednesday and Black Friday, and yet some sicko started a fire. 131 (at last confirmed count) men, women, children and infants have paid with their lives.

Perhaps the most remarkable thing was how the civil liberty groups didn't raise a stink after the shooting. Even they knew how little sympathy could be mustered for an arsonist after multiple wildfires torched their way through three densely populated counties and thousands of homes.

Al Qaeda has reorganized its notorious paramilitary formations that were devastated during the US invasion of Afghanistan in 2001 and 2002. Al Qaeda has reestablished the predominantly Arab and Asian paramilitary formation that was formerly known as Brigade 055 into a larger, more effective fighting unit known as the Lashkar al Zil, or Shadow Army, a senior US intelligence official told The Long War Journal.

I like Australians, they're a tough people. They're willing to live in a harsh climate to enjoy their freedoms. They remind me of another survivor, who would have had a birthday recently if nature didn't catch up with him too.

To celebrate that man's birthday (2/6), we can recall:

Ronald Reagan shot, in the operating room, with doctors removing a bullet from his lung, cheerfully he replies, "I hope you're all Republicans."

The doctors exclaim, "Today we're all Republicans."

No matter how Liberals discount even our myths, rational people tend to believe in mythology most strongly when the underlying ideas are true.

Therefore, Reagan being alive today, even if in mind only, stirring Republican Congressional Leadership, marshaling their wayward brethren, standing united against the Bolshevik Nanny statesmanship of the San Francisconian Ill-Looneratii, stepping forward now, calling upon all men and women of the Congress who still give a damn about the prosperity and freedom of American taxpaying citizens, affirm commitment fueling the true engines of value producing innovation, voices a Statement of Aims that does not die:

The central values of civilization are in danger. Over large stretches of the earth’s surface the essential conditions of human dignity and freedom have already disappeared. In others they are under constant menace from the development of current tendencies of policy. The position of the individual and the voluntary group are progressively undermined by extensions of arbitrary power. Even that most precious possession of Western Man, freedom of thought and expression, is threatened by the spread of creeds which, claiming the privilege of tolerance when in the position of a minority, seek only to establish a position of power in which they can suppress and obliterate all views but their own.

The group holds that these developments have been fostered by the growth of a view of history which denies all absolute moral standards and by the growth of theories which question the desirability of the rule of law. It holds further that they have been fostered by a decline of belief in private property and the competitive market; for without the diffused power and initiative associated with these institutions it is difficult to imagine a society in which freedom may be effectively preserved.

Believing that what is essentially an ideological movement must be met by intellectual argument and the reassertion of valid ideals, the group, having made a preliminary exploration of the ground, is of the opinion that further study is desirable inter alia in regard to the following matters:

* The analysis and exploration of the nature of the present crisis so as to bring home to others its essential moral and economic origins.

* The redefinition of the functions of the state so as to distinguish more clearly between the totalitarian and the liberal order.

* Methods of re-establishing the rule of law and of assuring its development in such manner that individuals and groups are not in a position to encroach upon the freedom of others and private rights are not allowed to become a basis of predatory power.

* The possibility of establishing minimum standards by means not inimical to initiative and functioning of the market.

* Methods of combating the misuse of history for the furtherance of creeds hostile liberty.

* The problem of the creation of an international order conducive to the safeguarding of peace and liberty and permitting the establishment of harmonious international economic relations.

Pray for the survivors, lizards. They need our prayers more than we need them ourselves.

If the wind changes again, it can get a lot closer. Oh and we live only 15 minutes from the CBD.

The major Kinglake complex fire is 20 minutes from where we spent our holidays 2 months ago. Its close enough to home. In Melbourne there is a 3 week wait (so says my colleague) in order to give blood. Melbournians/Victorians are really coming together over this.

Learn about the times Charles Darwin lived in, his thoughts, what his life was really like. Interesting podcast to provide an inner glimpse on all the evolution threads over the past year.

[Link: speakingoffaith.publicradio.org...]

We'll take a fresh and thought-provoking look at Darwin's life and ideas. He did not argue against God but against a simple understanding of the world — its beauty, its brutality, and its unfolding creation.

As the bicentennial of Darwin's birth is celebrated, we seek to understand the world that formed him, and what his observations about the natural world really said about God. Darwin took religion seriously, but he understood creation as an unfolding process. He rejected the Victorian idea of a God who had fixed every detail — including every social flaw and injustice — at the beginning of time.

/although the Gippsland fire was started by a CFA volunteer who wanted some action. Go figure.

The cause of the Hayman Fire: A federal forestry officer, Terry Barton, who claimed she was attempting to burn a letter from her estranged husband, set the fire inside a campfire ring within an area designated for no fires due to a severe drought. The fire quickly spread out of the campfire ring and eventually torched over 138,000 acres (560 km2) and burned across four different counties. A federal grand jury indicted Barton on four felony counts of arson.[2]

SNIP
Barton ultimately pleaded guilty to the arson charge[5] and was given a six year sentence in federal prison.[6] She was also ordered to reimburse the federal government $14.6 million. The State of Colorado originally sentenced Barton to 12 years in prison to run concurrently with the 6-year federal sentence. However the state sentence was overturned on appeal on grounds that the presiding judge had "the appearance of prejudice" because smoke from the fire motivated him to voluntarily leave his home for one night.[7] In March 2008, Barton was re-sentenced by a different judge to 15 years of probation.[8]

From the Herald Sun

MORE than one arsonist would have been responsible for several of the blazes which erupted in Victoria over the weekend, a fire criminologist believes.

About half of all bush fires in Australia are deliberately lit by fire bugs, Australian National University research fellow Dr Damon Muller said.

Given up to 400 fires hit Victoria over the weekend at varying locations across the state, Dr Muller believes more than one arsonist was at work.

"Without putting a figure on it, it would be surprising if some of them were not deliberately lit, just by virtue of the significant number,'' Dr Muller said.

"And by virtue of the diversity of locations there is probably a number of perpetrators.''

Federal Attorney General Robert McClelland said Prime Minister Kevin Rudd's description of arsonists as "mass murderers'' in the circumstances was warranted and any offenders would be pursued with relevant murder charges

A young couple got married and left on their honeymoon. When they got back, the bride immediately called her mother. Her mother asked, "How was the honeymoon?"

Suddenly she burst out crying. "But, mama, as soon as we returned Sam started using the most horrible language...things I'd never heard before! I mean, all these awful 4 letter words! You've got to come get me and take me home.... Please mama!"
"Sarah, Sarah," her mother said, "calm down! Tell me, what could be so awful? What 4-letter words?"

No, but at the end of the article the 31 year old is mentioned - who is suspected of lighting the Peats Ridge area

If you could see Peats Ridge - it's dry, scrubby bushland and often has bushfires - the danger of fires in this area is that it's close to heavily populated areas to the east, and can also travel along ridgelines into the northern suburbs of Sydney

219 MandyManners  Mon, Feb 9, 2009 3:16:33am

I posted this the other day but it still gives me a big smile.

The IRS decides to audit Grandpa, and summons him to the
IRS office. The IRS auditor was not surprised when Grandpa showed up
with his attorney.

The auditor said, 'Well, sir, you have an extravagant
lifestyle and no full-time employment, Which you explain
by saying that you win money gambling. I'm not sure the IRS finds that *
believable.'

I'm a great gambler, and I can prove it ,' says Grandpa. 'How about a demonstration?'

The auditor thinks for a moment and said, 'Okay. Go ahead.'

Grandpa says, 'I'll bet you a thousand dollars that I can bite my own eye.'

The auditor thinks a moment and says, 'It's a bet.'

Grandpa removes his glass eye and bites it. The auditor's jaw drops.

Grandpa says, 'Now, I'll bet you two thousand dollars that I can bite *
my other eye.'

Now the auditor can tell Grandpa isn't blind, so he takes the bet.

Grandpa removes his dentures and bites his good eye.

The stunned auditor now realizes he has wagered and lost three grand,
with Grandpa's attorney as a witness. He starts to get nervous.

'Want to go double or nothing?' Grandpa asks. 'I'll bet you six
thousand dollars that I can stand on one side of your desk, and pee
into that wastebasket on the other side, and never get a drop anywhere
in between..'

The auditor, twice burned, is cautious now, but he looks
carefully and decides there's no way this old guy could possibly
manage that stunt, so he agrees again.

Grandpa stands beside the desk and unzips his pants, but although he
strains mightily, he can't make the stream reach the wastebasket on
the other side, so he pretty much urinates all over the auditor's desk.

The auditor leaps with joy, realizing that he has just turned a major
loss into a huge win.

But Grandpa's own attorney moans and puts his head in his hands.

'Are you okay?' the auditor asks.

'Not really,' says the attorney. 'This morning, when Grandpa told me
he'd been summoned for an audit, he bet me twenty-five thousand
dollars that he could come in here and pee all over your desk and that
you'd be happy about it!'

A ventriloquist was driving through the midwest when his car broke down. He walked a ways and found a farmer who would let him use his phone. Well, the farmer seemed to be a real stereotypical rural type, so the ventriloquist thought it would be possible to have some fun with him. The farmer began to lead him back to the house.

Along the way, they passed a horse. The ventriloquist said to the farmer, "Is this your horse?" The farmer replied, "Yep." The ventriloquist asked, "Can he talk?" The farmer said, "Nope." The ventriloquist then said to the horse, "So, how do you like it here?" He then threw his voice, and said in a horse-like voice, "Oh, it's pretty good. Every morning the farmer feeds me oats." Upon hearing this the farmer was startled and quickened his pace.

Soon they came to a cow. The ventriloquist asked, "Is this your cow?" and the farmer replied, "Yep." He then asked, "Does it talk?" and the farmer replied, "I..I don't think so." The ventriloquist asked the cow, "How do you like it here?" and threw his voice again. In a cow-like voice, he said, "Oh, I like it just fine. Every morning the farmer comes and milks me." Upon hearing this, the farmer squirmed. He looked down at the ground and continued walking.

Soon they came to some sheep. The ventriloquist asked, "Are these your sheep?" and the farmer replied, "Yep." He then asked, "Do they talk?" and the farmer exclaimed, "Yes, but they lie!"

Five surgeons are discussing who makes the best patients on the operating table.

The first surgeon says, "I like to see accountants on my operating table, because when you open them up, everything inside is numbered."

The second responds, "Yeah, but you should try electricians! Everything inside them is color coded."

The third surgeon says, "No, I really think librarians are the best; everything inside them is in alphabetical order."

The fourth surgeon chimes in: "You know, I like construction workers...those guys always understand when you have a few parts left over at the end, and when the job takes longer than you said it would."

But the fifth surgeon shut them all up when he observed: "You're all wrong. Politicians are the easiest to operate on. There's no guts, no heart, and no spine, and the head and butt are interchangeable."

Charming.

While Barry O is sweet talking the world's worst despots, he uses a general -- the commander of American troops in South Korea -- to tell the North Koreans we might make war on them if they test a long range missile.

US warns North Korea over missile

The commander of US forces in South Korea has said he has not ruled out a military response if North Korea test-fires a long-range missile

"he has not ruled out a military response " HE?

I'm not certain, but I think having a active military general on the ground in the war zone make such a threat is very unusual in diplomacy. I think it is unusually belligerent and provocative.

Not to mention extremely rude since the guy is standing in someone else's country -- South Korea.

This rhetoric should have come from either Obama himself or from Hillary. I'll bet neither one of them wanted to say something that unfriendly to the North Korean leader, who is the sort of guy they think they can charm by showing them they are not George Bush. If this is what they wanted to tell the guy then having a military general on the ground in North Koren do it is totally ass backwards.

The NK's may believe they are dealing with a Paton style rouge who is about to make a move on his own. Or, they may think the Obama administration are amateurs and that may encourage them to do just about anything they want. That's what the Russians are doing.

Hopefully, U.S. corporations are learning a lesson about taking/expecting government aid:

General Motors Corp. and Chrysler LLC may have to be forced into bankruptcy by the U.S. government to assure repayment of $17.4 billion in federal bailout loans, a course of action the automakers claim would destroy them.

U.S. taxpayers currently take a backseat to prior creditors, including Citigroup Inc., JPMorgan Chase & Co. and Goldman Sachs Group Inc., according to loan agreements posted on the U.S. Treasury’s Web site. The government has hired a law firm to help establish its place at the front of the line for repayment, two people involved in the work said last week.

re: #253 rightside

By crisis, we mean a publicly visible disruption in some institutional sphere. Crisis can occur spontaneously (e.g., riots) or as the intended result of tactics of demonstration and protest which either generate institutional disruption or bring unrecognized disruption to public attention.

No matter where the strategy is implemented, it shares the following features:

The offensive organizes previously unorganized groups eligible for government benefits but not currently receiving all they can.

The offensive seeks to identify new beneficiaries and/or create new benefits.

The overarching aim is always to impose new stresses on target systems, with the ultimate goal of forcing their collapse.

SNIP

A 1995 strengthening of the Community Reinvestment Act required banks to find ways to provide mortgages to their poorer communities. It also let community activists intervene at yearly bank reviews, shaking the banks down for large pots of money.

Banks that got poor reviews were punished; some saw their merger plans frustrated; others faced direct legal challenges by the Justice Department.

Flexible lending programs expanded even though they had higher default rates than loans with traditional standards. On the Web, you can still find CRA loans available via ACORN with "100 percent financing . . . no credit scores . . . undocumented income . . . even if you don't report it on your tax returns." Credit counseling is required, of course.

SNIP

Investor's Business Daily added:

The revisions also allowed for the first time the securitization of CRA-regulated loans containing subprime mortgages. The changes came as radical "housing rights" groups led by ACORN lobbied for such loans. ACORN at the time was represented by a young public-interest lawyer in Chicago by the name of Barack Obama. (Emphasis, mine.)

Since these loans were to be underwritten by the government sponsored Fannie Mae and Freddie Mac, the implicit government guarantee of those loans absolved lenders, mortgage bundlers and investors of any concern over the obvious risk. As Bloomberg reported: "It is a classic case of socializing the risk while privatizing the profit."

And if you think Washington policy makers cared about ACORN's negative influence, think again. Before this whole mess came down, a Democrat-sponsored bill on the table would have created an "Affordable Housing Trust Fund," granting ACORN access to approximately $500 million in Fannie Mae and Freddie Mac revenues with little or no oversight.

Given Sully and the Aussie pilot who recently executed a water landing I think it was outside Sydney does anyone think Airlines might start encouraging Glider training for Pilots. Both Sully and the Aussie had Glider experience which likely had a large effect on their ability to safely land these montrosities without engine power.

285 Pietr  Mon, Feb 9, 2009 4:12:43am

Good Morning, Lizard Nation....64F and drizzling here in San Antonio.
Here's a change up, for ya'll:

A successful rancher died and left everything to his devoted wife. She was
a very good-looking woman and determined to keep the ranch, but knew very
little about ranching, so she decided to place an ad in the newspaper for a
ranch hand. Two cowboys applied for the job. One was gay and the other a
drunk. She thought long and hard about it, and when no one else applied she
decided to hire the gay guy, figuring it would be safer to have him around
the house than the drunk. He proved to be a hard worker who put in long
hours every day and knew a lot about ranching. For weeks, the two of them
worked, and the ranch was doing very well. Then one day, the rancher's
widow
said to the hired hand, 'You have done a really good job, and the ranch
looks great. You should go into town and kick up your heels.' The hired
hand readily agreed and went into town one Saturday night. One o'clock
came,
however, and he didn't return. Two o'clock and no hired hand. Finally
he
returned around two-thirty, and upon entering the room, he found the
rancher's widow sitting by the fireplace with a glass of wine, waiting for
him.

She quietly called him over to her.

'Unbutton my blouse and take it off,' she said.

Trembling, he did as she directed.

'Now take off my boots.'

He did as she asked, ever so slowly.

'Now take off my socks.'

He removed each gently and placed them neatly by her boots.

'Now take off my skirt'

He slowly unbuttoned it, constantly watching her eyes in the fire light.

'Now take off my bra.'

Again, with trembling hands, he did as he was told and dropped it to the
floor. Then she looked at him and said, 'If you ever wear my clothes into
town again, you're fired.'

Look for the market to open down as speculators sell off Friday's rally and the President spends the day bashing the economy to drum up political support for his plan to take over the economy.

The futures are down fractionally, the Nikkei was down, while the Hang Seng was up.

In the mean time, the Democrats spent half a million of our tax dollars on a weekend retreat for themselves, complete with hot tubs, back rubs and facials (just imagine the sight of Pelosi laying there in a towel getting a back rub, eh?) to figure out how best to spend even more money.

And our President flew Airforce 1 there to party with them too. So much for having the common touch and being concerned about the environment.

Did you read the IBD link?

In other words, nobody up and down the line — from the branch office on main street to the high-rise on Wall Street — analyzed the risk of such ill-advised loans. But why should they? Everybody was just doing what the regulators in Washington wanted them to do.

So everybody won until everybody lost, including the minorities the government originally mandated the banks to serve.

The original culprits in all this were the social engineers who compelled banks to make the bad loans. The private sector has no business conducting social experiments on behalf of government. Its business is making profit. Period. So it did what it naturally does and turned the subprime social mandate into a lucrative industry.

Of course, it was a Ponzi scheme, because they weren't allowed to play by their rules. The government changed the rules for risk.

In order to put low-income minorities into home loans, they were ordered to suspend lending standards that had served the banking industry well for centuries. No one wants to talk about it, so they just scapegoat Wall Street. Even John McCain has joined the Democrat chorus on this.

Speaking of Heroes "Sully" Sulenberger the Miracle on the Hudson pilot feels uncomfortable when people hail him as a hero. He can understand why they may want to but doesn't believe himself worthy of the title.

This pilot ditched in Darwin Harbour, all 6 people on board safe

At least the water was a bit warmer than the Hudson River!

Two elderly women were eating breakfast in a restaurant one morning. Ethel
noticed something funny about Mabel's ear and she said, ''Mabel, do you know you've got a suppository in your left ear?'

Mabel answered, 'I have a suppository in my ear?'

She pulled it out and stared at it.

Then she said, 'Ethel, I'm glad you saw this thing. Now I think I know where to find my hearing aid.'

When the husband finally died his wife put the usual death notice in the paper, but added that he died of gonorrhea.

No sooner were the papers delivered when a friend of the family phoned and complained bitterly, 'You know very well that he died of diarrhea, not
gonorrhea.'

Replied the widow, 'I nursed him night and day so of course I know he died of diarrhea, but I thought it would be better for posterity to remember him as a great lover rather than the big s**t he always was.'

Good morning.

Yes, but where do you find that info in the news ? Let one of the Big 3 fly their own planes to a hearing.....

There is plenty of blame to go around on both sides of the political aisle. But the lesson should be clear that socializing failed businesses -- whether in housing, health care or in Detroit -- is not a long-term solution. Expanding government's intrusion into the private sector doesn't come without great risk. The renewing and self-correcting nature of the private sector is largely lost in the public sector, where accountability is impaired by obfuscation of responsibility, and where special interests benefit even when the public good is ill-served.

In his infamous speech to the National Bureau of Economic Research, Summers noted that women often don’t want to work the hours needed to get to the top and that girls are “socialized toward nursing” while boys are “socialized toward building bridges.”

The quote that killed him: “In the special case of science and engineering, there are issues of intrinsic aptitude, and particularly of the variability of aptitude, and that those considerations are reinforced by what are, in fact, lesser factors involving socialization and continuing discrimination.”

Just wanted to dredge up so good old Larry Summers quotes, you know the man running Obama's economic team.

For many people, it doesn't matter much to them what happens, until you take their stuff or wallets. Obama and the Democrats will own the economy and all the troubles coming from this spending bill, if it goes through. When people don't get their tax cuts, their taxes go up, and all the things Obama promised them don't materialize, I think the shit will hit the fan. The one good thing the Republicans are doing is making sure the American people know who is supporting this spending bill and who is not.

An elderly couple were on a cruise and it was really stormy. They were
standing on the back of the boat watching the moon, when a wave came up and washed the old woman overboard. They searched for days and couldn't find her, so the Captain sent the old man back to shore with the promise that he would notify him as soon as they found something.

Three weeks went by and finally the old man got a fax from the boat. It read: 'Sir, sorry to inform you, we found your wife dead at the bottom of the ocean. We hauled her up to the deck and attached to her butt was an oyster and in it was a pearl worth $50,000. Please advise.'

The old man faxed back: 'Send me the pearl and re-bait the trap.'

A funeral service is being held for a woman who has just passed away. At the end of the service, the pall bearers are carrying the casket out when they accidentally bump into a wall, jarring the casket . They hear a faint moan.

They open the casket and find that the woman is actually alive!

She lives for ten more years, and then dies. Once again, a ceremony is held, and at the end of it, the pall bearers are again carrying out the casket. As they carry the casket towards the door, the husband cries out, 'Watch out for that wall!'

I live in a neighboring state and he is well liked. Makes alot of sense - As far as the unemployment rate in those counties that the reporter highlighted at the beginning of the segment, they are ranked very low as far as education. I wouldn't be surprised if the high school graduation rate for Allendale county was less than 40%. Don't know, but would not raise an eyebrow if it was..

That's why McConnell and Steele need to put as much distance between Snow,Collins, and Specter as they can. Because O and his minions will ride those 3's support like a gigantic surfboard of bi-partisanship. Hell, the 2 from Maine might as well blame the current mess solely on Bush while voting yea on the compromise bill that still has 7 billion more than the house version.

This is a good idea of how naive The One is

Obama, by contrast, addressed Muslim countries in his inaugural speech Jan. 20, calling for “a new way forward based on mutual interest and mutual respect.” He gave his first interview as president to Dubai-based Al-Arabiya television and pledged to “start now” on Palestinian-Israeli peace efforts.

There is no mutual interest. The Palistinean and Arab leadership in the region is interested in the eradication of Israel. Israel is not interested in this.

There is no mutual respect. Israel bends over backwards, trades land for (empty) promises, and is paid back with suicide bombers and rocket attacks.

The 1930s are playing out again. Where will the killing fields be this time if not in Europe?

Just heard on the news here that Tiger Woods wife just gave birth to a baby boy. Can anyone confirm?

Is there a reason to care?

458 Rustler  Mon, Feb 9, 2009 5:31:09am
Williamson is one of four bishops from the ultraconservative Society of St. Pius X whose excommunication was lifted by the Vatican last month.

He has apologized to the pope for having stirred controversy, but has not repudiated his comments, in which he also said only 200,000 to 300,000 Jews were killed during World War II.

Williamson does not plan to immediately comply with the Vatican's demand that he recant, and has rejected a suggestion that he might visit the former Auschwitz death camp, the German weekly Der Spiegel reported Saturday.

Williamson said he would correct himself if he is satisfied by the evidence, but insisted that examining it "will take time," Der Spiegel reported

He needs to be reexcommunicated he failed in his penance. He was asked to recant a blatantly false statement and refused.

Thomas Jefferson, in some regard could be called a prophet

When we get piled upon one another in large cities, as in Europe, we shall become as corrupt as Europe .
Thomas Jefferson
The democracy will cease to exist when you take away from those who are willing to work and give to those who would not.
Thomas Jefferson
It is incumbent on every generation to pay its own debts as it goes. A principle which if acted on would save one-half the wars of the world.
Thomas Jefferson
I predict future happiness for Americans if they can prevent the government from wasting the labors of the people under the pretense of taking care of them.
Thomas Jefferson
My reading of history convinces me that most bad government results from too much government.
Thomas Jefferson
No free man shall ever be debarred the use of arms.
Thomas Jefferson
The strongest reason for the people to retain the right to keep and bear arms is, as a last resort, to protect themselves against tyranny in government.
Thomas Jefferson
The tree of liberty must be refreshed from time to time with the blood of patriots and tyrants.
Thomas Jefferson
To compel a man to subsidize with his taxes the propagation of ideas which he disbelieves and abhors is sinful and tyrannical.
Thomas Jefferson
And finally, a Very Interesting Quote :

In light of the present financial crisis, it's interesting to read what Thomas Jefferson said in 1802:

'I believe that banking institutions are more dangerous to our liberties than standing armies. If the American people ever allow private banks to control the issue of their currency, first by inflation, then by deflation, the banks and corporations that will grow up around the banks will deprive the people of all property until their children wake-up homeless on the continent their fathers conquered.'

That article is misleading in that it states that Israel Beytenu is opposed to all land for peace deals. While strictly true, the party does support land swaps, but does not agree to the formula of land for peace, rather land for land, and peace for peace.

Mummies are cool.

CAIRO – Egyptian archaeologists say they have discovered 30 mummies inside a 4,600-year-old tomb, in the latest round of excavations at the vast necropolis of Saqqara 12 miles (20 kilometers) south of Cairo.

Egypt's chief archeologist, Zahi Hawas, says the new tomb was found Sunday at the bottom of a 36 foot (11-meter) deep well. Eight of the mummies were in sarcophagi and the rest had been placed in niches in the wall.

Hawas has described the new site as a "storeroom for mummies."

His assistant Abdel Hakim Karar said Monday the use of such niches was rare during that period of time.

Excavations have been ongoing at Saqqara for 150 years, uncovering a vast cemetery dating mostly from the Old Kingdom, but including sites as recent as the Roman era.

When I went to lunch today, I noticed an old lady sitting on a park bench sobbing her eyes out. I stopped and asked her what was wrong.

She said, 'I have a 22-year-old husband at home. He makes love to me every morning and then gets up and makes me pancakes, sausage, fresh fruit and freshly ground coffee.'

I said, 'Well, then why are you crying?'

She said, 'He makes me homemade soup for lunch and my favorite brownies and then makes love to me for half the afternoon.'

I said, 'Well, why are you crying?'

She said, 'For dinner he makes me a gourmet meal with wine and my favorite dessert and then makes love to me until 2:00 a.m.'

I said, 'Well, why in the world would you be crying?'

She said, 'I can't remember where I live!'

*************************************************************

Two elderly ladies had been friends for many decades. Over the years they had shared all kinds of activities and adventures. Lately, their activities had been limited to meeting a few times a week to play cards.

One day they were playing cards when one looked at the other and said, 'Now don't get mad at me. I know we've been friends for a long time, but I just can't think of your name! I've thought and thought, but I can't remember it.
Please tell me what your name is.'

Her friend glared at her. For at least three minutes she just stared and
glared at her.

Finally she said, 'How soon do you need to know?'

Great news for revheads (Aussie ones)

I'm a great motor racing fan, and my favourite V8 Supercar driver headed to the US a couple of years ago to try his luck in NASCAR

I've been following his progress via his website, and this weekend he lines up at the grid for the Daytona 500

The first Aussie to do so........

AFTER Ben Graham's Superbowl start, Marcos Ambrose will become the latest Australian to make history in an American sport showpiece.

The former V8 Supercar champion will become the first Australian to line up in the iconic Daytona 500 when he begins his first full season in NASCAR racing's top-tier Sprint Cup series this weekend.

And along with the milestone will come his biggest-ever pay day, with even a last-placed finish set to earn him at least $379,800.

Ambrose and his new team JTG Daugherty Racing learned over the weekend they were guaranteed one of 35 starting spots for Monday's 200-lap race at Daytona Beach, Florida.

"I have to pinch myself every day because it is the biggest race there is," said Ambrose, who qualified 30th-fastest on Sunday ahead of two heat races later this week.

"I'm really looking forward to my first Daytona 500 because it is huge for me personally to be able to experience it first-hand.

"For years, I have read about the race in magazines while living in Australia and it intrigued me."

The 32-year-old Tasmanian is stepping up to the top level of NASCAR racing in just his third year racing in the US.

Good on ya Marcos!

Illegals sue

Don't know if this story is old news to you guys, but if an American court rules in favor of the illegals, all bets are off. The Government has largely abrogated it's responsibility to secure our borders, if landowners are banned from doing so then we're done for.

Amazing. I can't believe it.

545 quickjustice  Mon, Feb 9, 2009 6:06:03am

A central aspect of principled argumentation (debate) is the premise that when both sides of an argument have been presented fairly, an observer can distill the strengths and weaknesses of each side, draw appropriate conclusions, and move on.

What's troubling about the "evolution v. religion" debate is that creationists keep recycling their losing arguments over and over again. They're not responding to what they're hearing from the other side. That failure or refusal to acknowledge the fair points made by debate opponents suggests bad faith in this process.

I identify the bad faith as a deliberate misstatement, or misunderstanding, by creationists of the "question" for resolution. As misstated by creationists, it is: "RESOLVED: G-D (DEFINED AS THE CREATOR OF THE UNIVERSE) EXISTS", thereby leaving it to defenders of science and evolution to defend atheism.

The actual question is: "RESOLVED, that science provides a method superior to religious dogma for observing, measuring, analyzing, and understanding the natural world in strictly empirical terms."

And on this question, the creationists refuse to engage, because they lose every time.

Good morning, Lizard Clan...just wanted to thank you again for your thoughts and prayers for us...we had to put our wee dog down Saturday morning. There was nothing the vet could do for him. We held him until he was gone, then went home to mourn the loss of the best four-footed friend we've ever known. We are stunned at how intertwined he was with everything we did, now made painfully clear by his absence.

He viewed himself as a member of the people-pack to such a degree that we find ourselves turning constantly to look for him, talk to him, because he kept to our sides always. The most curious of dogs, he had to inspect everything we put our hands to. We still make room for him beside us, but his affectionate countenance is no longer there. We always called him 'the small dog with the large presence' and now we're finding out just how large that was.

I'm going to go make myself very busy now, to hopefully not miss my little shadow of twelve years as much as I fear I will, and work at making a new daily dance that doesn't include my four-footed partner, as difficult as that will be.

Thanks again for thinking of us.

When that happened, we had to let her go, and the vet made it less painfull for our furry, family member. Fond remembrance will eventually surpass the ache, but it'll take time......

Our terrier mutt would have been 16 this fall. We rescued him when he was 4, worked hard at getting him healthy, and it was, just as you say, when life stopped being fun for this grateful dog who found joy in everything...well, there was only one choice, the best for him...

Thank you. It was just on FNC. This was the first I'd heard of it. I thought (silly me) that the Census was supposed to be non-partisan.

The Census can never be non-partisan.

The Census determines representation in the House.

Some pesky law that the Commerce Department is the one who designates who's gonna run the Census and who is the nominee for Chairman of the Commerce Department- that Republican Senator who wouldn't accept it unless the Dem goveneor of his state promised to replace him with a Republican in the US Senate.

Hey real! Every census I can remember has been politicized. By the left.

I remember the left wanting to count people they couldn't find because, since they couldn't find them, they were therefore homeless and deserved to be counted.

"We counted 20,000 in L.A. County, so there must be 2,000,000..." kind of thing.

Regarding those fires, I came across a very interesting article that was posted on the Drudge Report.

Islam group urges forest fire jihad

AUSTRALIA has been singled out as a target for "forest jihad" by a group of Islamic extremists urging Muslims to deliberately light bushfires as a weapon of terror.

US intelligence channels earlier this year identified a website calling on Muslims in Australia, the US, Europe and Russia to "start forest fires", claiming "scholars have justified chopping down and burning the infidels' forests when they do the same to our lands".

The website, posted by a group called the Al-Ikhlas Islamic Network, argues in Arabic that lighting fires is an effective form of terrorism justified in Islamic law under the "eye for an eye" doctrine.

It just struck me as interesting that an Islamic group would put this out at this time. It might be worth more investigation, IMHO.

We've had big fires, we do most years but this one has by far the worst death toll

In 1994, we had huge bushfires right here in Sydney - with loss of life too

Many homes were destroyed in suburbs just to the east of our place

We'd been on holidays in Queensland and coming in to land over Sydney the view was just frightening - blackened bushland within sight of the CBD

Islam group urges forest fire jihad
(Josh Gordon, The Age, September 8, 2008

The posting — which instructs jihadis to remember "forest jihad" in summer months — says fires cause economic damage and pollution, tie up security agencies and can take months to extinguish so that "this terror will haunt them for an extended period of time".

"Imagine if, after all the losses caused by such an event, a jihadist organisation were to claim responsibility for the forest fires," the website says. "You can hardly begin to imagine the level of fear that would take hold of people in the United States, in Europe, in Russia and in Australia."

With the nation heading into another hot, dry summer, Australian intelligence agencies are treating the possibility that bushfires could be used as a weapon of terrorism as a serious concern.

Attorney-General Robert McClelland said the Federal Government remained "vigilant against such threats", warning that anyone caught lighting a fire as a weapon of terror would feel the wrath of anti-terror laws.

"Any information that suggests a threat to Australia's interests is investigated by relevant agencies as appropriate," Mr McClelland said.
Adam Dolnik, director of research at the University of Wollongong's Centre for Transnational Crime Prevention, said that bushfires (unlike suicide bombing) were generally not considered a glorious type of attack by jihadis, in keeping with a recent decline in the sophistication of terrorist operations.

"With attacks like bushfires, yes, it would be easy. It would be very damaging and we do see a decreasing sophistication as a part of terrorist attacks," Dr Dolnik said.

"In recent years, there have been quite a few attacks averted and it has become more and more difficult for groups to do something effective."
Dr Dolnik said he had observed an increase in traffic on jihadi websites calling for a simplification of terrorist attacks because the more complex operations had been failing. But starting bushfires was still often regarded as less effective than other operations because governments could easily deny terrorism as the cause.

The internet posting by the little-known group claimed the idea of forest fires had been attributed to imprisoned Al Qaeda leader Abu Musab Al-Suri. It said Al-Suri had urged terrorists to use sulphuric acid and petrol to start forest fires.
