Gregg Withdraws As Commerce Secretary

Politics • Views: 1,921

A bit of a blow for President Hopenchange: DRUDGE REPORT: OBAMA BURNED: GREGG WITHDRAWS.

Sen. Gregg stated, “I want to thank the President for nominating me to serve in his Cabinet as Secretary of Commerce. This was a great honor, and I had felt that I could bring some views and ideas that would assist him in governing during this difficult time. I especially admire his willingness to reach across the aisle.

“However, it has become apparent during this process that this will not work for me as I have found that on issues such as the stimulus package and the Census there are irresolvable conflicts for me. Prior to accepting this post, we had discussed these and other potential differences, but unfortunately we did not adequately focus on these concerns. We are functioning from a different set of views on many critical items of policy.”

The Republicans better not complain, they had their chance to be a part of this, they chose not too, it’s on them.

My wild guess: Gregg wanted the payroll tax cut, but Obama wouldn’t go for it. Too “pro-business”. Not socialist enough.

Yeah, didn’t he know Obama wanted a commerce secretary who wanted to screw the American businessman?

That being said, he should have resigned the moment Obama dropped the charges on the Al Qaeda operative being held for bombing the USS Cole….

Well, the story I read was that the Governor of New Hampshire, John Lynch, a Democrat, was planning to appoint a Republican replacement for Gregg if he left the senate. Just because it would be a really swell and fair thing to do.

OK, but remind me, how many is a ”tetralogy?”

Four. The fifth, “The Urth of the New Sun” is considered a separate work.
The four are
“The Shadow of the Torturer”
“The Claw of the Conciliator”
“The Sword of the Lictor”
“The Citadel of the Autarch”

These books have somewhat messianic, and possibly Christian, themes, but this Jew enjoyed them.

However, they have some quite disturbing scenes, even in the beginning; the torturers (excuse me, members of the Guild of Seekers of Truth and Penitence”) perform more than waterboarding or the Comfy Chair.

156 Edouard  Thu, Feb 12, 2009 2:28:54pm

Gregg was nominated when the Dems were legitimately worried about a Republican filibuster on their precious “stimulus.” To take him out of the equation meant that they had less work to do to beat back a filibuster. Gregg was obliged to abstain from senate voting on cloture and the bill vote.

Of course, the Dems’ work was further successful when they peeled off not one, but three RINO chumps to successfully block all Senate Republican countermeasures and shut up the debate that America badly needs on a bill that appears to be catastrophic for this nation. Gregg was not ultimately needed to be locked in the closet by the Democrats, although for a few days it appeared locking him up would be helpful.

I am glad that Gregg overcame this exercise in deeply cynical politics and withdrew. I hope he learned a lesson about staying stalwart for the opposition party, which badly needs stalwarts.

You’d like to think that Gregg must have finally come around to the realization that -
1) The “stimulus” is just the usual Dem push for big government takeover
2) White House “involvement” in the census doesn’t quite fit under Article 1 of the Constitution (unless you consult Joe Biden)
But more probably, he realized that given RINOs Snowe, Specter, et al, he wasn’t going to be in a position to block legislation OR get much free network air time after all.

I love Obama’s “bipartisan efforts”. Bipartisan doesn’t mean Democrats write a socialist bill filled with gifts for donors and government-dependent voters, then tell Republicans they have to vote for it or they aren’t bipartisan. It doesn’t mean you appoint someone who is Republican then take away all power and decision making.

I think the plan is clear and no conveivable benefit would be garnered from being attached to this mess. This census controversy is a taste of joys yet to come from the White House in the next four years. I think Gregg maybe saw a little down the road and bailed out while the bailing was good.

And while he still had his Senate seat…

262 Captain Jack  Thu, Feb 12, 2009 4:36:43pm

I sent Sen Gregg this e-mail:
Dear Sen. Gregg,
You are truly a man of courage for declining the Sec. of Commerce position. I was initially outraged and felt betrayed, and e-mailed you such thoughts, when I first heard about your intentions. I appreciate your reconsideration and feel you have made the honorable choice. I believed that there could be no common ground between you and a Democrat that promises people something for nothing and tries to pretend there will be no severe consequences from simply printing money to solve a problem that only time and fiscal austerity can unravel.
I also feel the demonization of the private sector and “free” market for a economic problem caused by market distortions initiated by government policy to have the GSEs Fannie and Freddie buy sub-prime mortgages is sheer obfuscation. Wall Street was merely the executioners of US Government policy. The media will not educate the public because the editors and producers of our media are liberal democrats and want them to succeed for deep seated ideological reasons. Please take a leading role in educating the public through your high profile as a US Senator. The media must cover your statements and cannot commit “bias by omission”.
Thank you again Senator you are a patriot. Your true character is demonstrated by being able to recognize a mistake and correct it.
Sincerely,

George Kotal

Still, if he’s a man of honor, which I expect he is, and he sees what’s coming for the military there’s no more courageous or patriotic an act he could perform for his country and the men and women serving under his supervision….

Well, unless Gates feels that by staying he’s serving as a firewall between a commander in chief that has no clue and the men and women protecting our country. If so, God bless him and God bless our service people.

267 Kaymad  Thu, Feb 12, 2009 7:07:06pm

This is no big deal. It’s being presented as mean old republicans won’t play ball. So what’s new? We’ve always let the democrats and the press demonize us and for the most part republicans let it pass. This might be a good opportunity to draw attention to the census issue…but you’d need the press for that and they aren’t in it anymore to play gotcha with the President.

Krauthammer said on Fox that this doesn’t mean much in the big scheme of things. The stimulus is going to pass and Obama will have tremendous political capital afterwards for passing the gigantic porkzilla piece of crap. We’ll probably never know for sure what it has done to the economy.

268 jcbunga  Thu, Feb 12, 2009 7:32:15pm

269 Rexatosis  Thu, Feb 12, 2009 8:41:18pm

While the Commerce Dept. does not have a large budget by Admin. Dept. standards it is extremely important in terms of promoting US business interests, especially overseas. President Obama has completely screwed this up. Rudderless departments tend to create or exacerbate problems (for an example see the 1st Clinton Administration’s Justice Department and Waco). POTUS Obama’s inability to seat a Commerce Secy. combined with the crook (or idiot if one is charitable) at Treasury is not a good sign for the economy. This is why you don’t hire inexperienced novices for key administrative posts yet alone the position of POTUS.

OK, so Sen. Gregg signs up in the spirit of post-partisanshipre: #8 loppyd

I think that was the deal breaker.

OK, so Sen. Gregg signs up in the spirit of post-partisanship - all that Hopey-Changey BS - and then it gets out that the boss-to-be completely insults him by taking an important part of his job out from under him. Then the boss-to-be uses fear-mongering to pull off a $1T hoax that’s got far more to do with pushing socialism than it has to do with “economic stimulus”.

So Gregg says, “You know what? I didn’t sign up to be the token R for your Administration, I don’t care for being publically insulted and used, and I don’t want to be associated with a lying bastard/socialist and his tax cheat sidekicks. Take that job and shove it, Mr President!” [I’m paraphrasing, of course.]

At least that’s the was I saw it. I really enjoyed this news story! I get a real kick out of just thinking about it!
