Shimon Peres Admits He Was Wrong

Middle East • Views: 3,069

Israeli President Shimon Peres admits he was wrong about withdrawing from Gaza.

President Shimon Peres said Wednesday that he had erred in supporting Israel’s unilateral withdrawal from Gaza.

The revealing remarks come three years after Israel’s evacuation of the volatile coastal strip which has since been seized by Hamas.

“Whatever will happen in the future, we shall not repeat the mistakes we made in leaving Gaza,” Peres said in a question and answer session with a group of American Jewish leaders. “It should have been done otherwise. I was for leaving Gaza. I consider myself as one of the persons mistaken.”

This, of course, is not the first time Peres has been wrong, with disastrous results.

no, he did the right thing
the current regime needs to remind the “people” of Gaza that rocket and mortar attacks will not be tolerated
and more retaliation like recently will happen if the attacks continue

but that they will get more and more devastating each time

why be in a place that is so costly in kidnappings and suicide bombings ?

It’s also worth pointing out that Peres was unclear whether the disengagement was wrong, or that it was wrong that Israel had done it unilaterally.

And he unfortunately didn’t express any regret for the Jewish residents of Gaza who were displaced and still have not been accomodated.

27 Silhouette  Wed, Feb 18, 2009 2:18:31pm

I’ll never forget what a horrible time the removal was. Not only were Israelis against Israelis, but LGFers against LGFers. People losing their homes. The hope that the pain would be worth it.

They even had to dig up their dead and remove them because without a doubt, the remaining Gazans would have desecrated the dead.

Under Israeli law, the party regarded as the most likely to win majority support in the 120-seat parliament is asked to form a government, and pundits say Peres is certain to give the task to Netanyahu.

Charles,

Unfortunately, the President’s office has already backtracked on these remarks. They’re now saying that withdrawing from Gaza (and expelling all its Jews) was right, but it should have been done by consent with the ‘Palestinians.’ Of course, it was done unilaterally because no ‘consent’ could be reached.

I’m not surprised about Shragai, he isn’t exactly a leftist. And I believe that Ari Shavit has also written about the neglect of those who were expelled.

One of the sick ironies of the expulsion is that a number of the Jews who lived in Gaza, had been expelled the Sinai. These were “settlers” who were expelled twice in the name of a non-existent “peace.” But somehow “settlers” are the biggest obstacle to peace according to much of the opinion making elite.

No.

If there had been no withdrawal, Gaza wouldn’t be an armed camp and there would have been no need for Operation Cast Lead. That’s 1300 Pali lives right there whether they are ‘civilian’ or terrorist.

And the ultimate battle there has yet to be fought - a battle that would not have been necessary had Israel stayed in Gaza.

And by the way, tell the people of Sderot and its environs that their lives were spared by the Gaza expulsion.

Please….

I kind of agree. I was against any withdrawal, but I understand the concept of living in an area that demographically is a loser. There should have been some kind of agreement that guaranteed security. Even if it had been nullified by the Hamasies at a later date.

There will never be peace between the arab/muslim world and Israel. Never.

You may be right. I don’t know. I can’t see the future too clearly. I have hope (tikva) for peace, but until then, Israel has to remain strong, vigilant, and needs our support.

Israeli President Shimon Peres admits he was wrong about withdrawing from Gaza.

I hope he’s learned his lesson. It kinda reminds me of that saying about compromising with evil and evil winning.

The good news: By next year dental insurance will be free
the bad news: You’ll need to be on a waiting list for 10 months.

and then when you finally get in to see the dentist…he’ll be the guy who sat in the back row of dental school and got a C- average!

I am not sure if I agree with Peres’ reassessment of the Israeli withdrawl from Gaza. At the time of the withdrawl I had a conversation on the topic with a colleague (a poli-sci prof. who is definitely to the left) and we both agreed it was probably the prudent move to make for Israel. Not because it would bring peace but because Israel was overextended into a territory where Jews were a miniscule minority, was a desolate geographic rat-hole with little economic promise (and I am being way kind by giving it any economic promise), and a massive drain on Israel’s economy and defense budget. Also Gaza is isolated in such a way that Israel can raid the territory if necessary with impunity should the situation warrant it (as it just did.) In retrospect I believe my colleague and I were right though the situation still “sucks”: Israel is in a much stronger defensive position without over-extended lines, can raid Gaza whenever the need arises, and does not have the headache of actually trying to govern the mess that is Gaza. I would not however apply the approach Peres used for Gaza to the West Bank and absolutely disagree with any loss of the Golan Heights (do not cede the higher ground).

OT, But I got this Email-not sure if it’s true, or how to research it. Can anyone verify this. somehow? If not, then maybe I can get Charles to delete it:

Thanks Congress.

I wondered why they bailed out AIG, since its not a bank. I don’t know. Remember when this economic crisis hit, and Congress let Bear Sterns go under, and then pushed a bunch of Forced Marriages between Banks, etc.?

Then they bailed out AIG. At the time, I thought: “That’s strange. What does an insurance company have to do with this crisis?”
I think I just found the answer: AIG INSURES THE PENSION TRUST OF THE UNITED STATES CONGRESS ! No wonder they got bailed out right away! Our Senators and Congressmen said by their
actions, “To hell with the people, let’s protect our future”.

ISN’T IT NICE TO SEE WHERE THEIR LOYALTIES LIE !

On topic, can anyone explain how Tzipi Longstocking got so many votes in the first place? Did the DNC loan her some voters from their rolls (deceased and otherwise)? Give up half the land? That is crazy talk.

108 itellu3times  Wed, Feb 18, 2009 3:20:03pm

Very glad to see Peres gaining some wisdom in his old age.

Contra, say, Jimmah Cartah.

But then, at least some who supported the Gaza pullout, did so with the expectation that it would fail and by (negative) example save them from pressure to pull out from the West Bank.

Though strictly speaking, I suppose one can draw other lessons and find other errors in the events that transpired, o lordy yes other errors. Well, any distance made good, is progress.

At heart it is people like Peres who disrespect the “Palestinians,” and people like Netanyahu who give them their due. Hamas has consistently stated it will not recognize Israel. They haven’t wavered, haven’t played diplomatic games, they haven’t done anything that should cause anyone to think they aren’t serious about their goal of taking over ALL of ISRAEL. Vilify him if you will, but Meyer Kahane stated this clearly- he never thought of the Arabs in Israel has subhuman. He took them seriously. They view the Jews as interlopers, and they want “their” land back. It was because of this basic respect for their opinion that Kahane wanted them out of Israel, because the conflict between the Jewish and Arab views of Holy Land ownership made them bitter enemies and he foresaw endless conflict. It’s a hard argument to pierce. Modern Israelis may not have the stomach for mass deportation, but that doesn’t mean they have to give up land for empty promises, or any promises. You don’t give up land. Begin was wrong to give back the Sinai, Moshe Dayan never should have backed off the Temple Mount, and we can only hope Israel will retain the Golan. And yes this is empty talk from an American who lives his safe, know-it-all existence, a little wiser after 9/11 but not acquainted with the daily troubles of the Israeli.

I have always thought the goal in withdrawing from Gaza was to show the Palestinians were not capable of governing themselves AND had little interest in the two-state solution. Mission accomplished, although the anti-semites of the world will not admit it. Ever.

117 tsionguy  Wed, Feb 18, 2009 4:48:43pm

In 1979 Israel tried to convince Egypt to take back Gaza, and they refused. They believed the Palestinians were ungovernable.

Someone..anyone…please help me. I really want to understand how this election could have ended with Livni getting so many votes in light of recent events. Is there ‘buyer’s remorse’ in Israel after her comments of giving up half of Israeli land? Is this what the populace really wants? Have they not learned that land for peace doesn’t work with these ‘people’ who have made their objective clear?

120 yy  Wed, Feb 18, 2009 5:43:43pm

It is truly pathetic watching Peres—a man who pushed socialism and national suicide for so many years. When most Israelis were yelling that Arafat was a terrorist, Peres ran to make peace. When everyone yelled that “you can’t make peace with terrorists,” Peres ran to make peace with them. When people yelled “you can’t give land for peace,” Peres ran to give land away to make peace. Now, as he is well into his 80’s, he sees that his life’s work may be “all for naught.” Truly pathetic.

Even more pathetic, however, is the fact that America has elected an American version of Shimon Peres: a man who pushes socialism and national suicide. While many Americans are yelling that you can’t make peace with terrorists, our President is offering to “negotiate” with hamas, the syrians, hezbollah, iran, etc. etc. etc.

I can only pray that innocent Americans will not pay with their blood as so many innocent Israelis have over the years thanks to Peres and his ilk.

121 EE  Wed, Feb 18, 2009 6:10:36pm

I wonder if Shimon Peres understands that there are people who are mortal enemies of Israel. If he thinks that if Israel will only be nice to everyone, then everyone will be nice to Israel, then he has a serious misunderstanding of the state of affairs.

Peres said that he could not understand why, after Israel left the Gaza Strip — “disengaged” was the illusionary word used at the time — why there was an escalation of rocket fire against Israel from the Gaza Strip. We left, he said. We removed all of the Jewish residents and all of the soldiers from there. So why did they react in this way.

Let me explain this to him as simply as possible. There are people who want to eliminate the existence of Israel. What limits their behavior in doing this is only their capability to inflict harm against Israel. Their underlying intentions do not change one iota. Certainly if Israel gives them more capability to inflict harm on Israel, they will use it. The attempt to appease them, the attempt to change their intentions by showing weakness and giving them more capability to inflict harm will always fail. Did Peres think that by Israel showing weakness and giving in, providing Israel’s enemies with more capability to inflict harm against Israel, in some way a feeling of guilt would fall all over people who are mortal enemies of Israel, and who live in an honor/shame society and not a guilt society? The feeling of guilt just does not exist among the mortal enemies of Israel living in an honor/shame society.

I hope that Peres understands that if Iran acquires nuclear weapons, there is no feeling of guilt that is going to stop it from using them. It just doesn’t work that way.

122 redseeped  Wed, Feb 18, 2009 6:33:12pm

I wish peace would brake out in the ME. But, peace can only be achieved once war is over. War, can only be over once someone wins.
Israel needs to allow herself to win first and not be yanked around by Europeans and others for the sake of their misguided benevolence to Hamas thugs. Even Shimon Peres knows this.

And by the way, tell the people of Sderot and its environs that their lives were spared by the Gaza expulsion.

And with the occupation of Gaza there wouldn’t have been rockets, terror attacks on settlers, or the soldiers who were forced to protect them?

I am a bit annoyed by this Peres bashing here at lgf - he is a hero not only of Dimona but Entebbe. The dis-engagement was, after all, the idea of the Likudnik Sharon, that it was unilateral even more so. In any case: The same way as it makes sense to have control over the Jordan Valley, it makes sense to go to defensible borders at Gaza.

Can You Pronounce the Name of Your Own Nation?

Palestine, Palestinians, the right to return to Palestine; The Arab inhabitants in both, Israel and the Palestinian territories call themselves Palestinians and call their homeland Palestine. The world has fallen into a trap believing the existence of a fabricated Arab Palestinian nation. The evidence for the biggest hoax in history- so called Arab Palestinian nation- has been in front of our ears for decades and we were deaf to hear it. The evidence has been pronounced thousand of times, day after day, hours after hours by the Arabs themselves. They have been shouting out loud that they are a fabricated nation, and no one was willing to listen. Have you got no idea at all what I am taking about? Want a hint? Listen again, Palestine. Palestinian. No, still not? OK, fair enough, let me explain.

A name of a nation is a name that is rooted in history, a name of a nation is proudly transferred from father to son generation after generation. A name of a nation is rooted within the language of your own people, a language that you are proud of, a language that you can actually pronounce to the letter. But just by listening to an Arabic speech you will shortly realize that the letter/sound ‘P’ does not exist in Arabic. Arabs pronounce ‘B’ instead of ‘P’, for example, the word ‘people’ will be pronounced as ‘beoble’. The question is, if ‘P’ does not exist in Arabic, then why an Arab will use a letter that does not exist in his alphabet for a name, and more so for the name of his own nation, and a name for his own people (beoble)? The name Palestine or Palestinian cannot be pronounced phonetically by any man whose mother tongue is Arabic, including Arabs who so call themselves Palestinians.

How a nation can truly exist when their proclaimed ‘beoble’ cannot pronounce it correctly? The fallacy of a native Arab Palestinian nation has been absorbed and accepted for decades without questioning if they really ever existed. An Arab ‘Balestinian’ nation is the biggest hoax in the human history.

Since he forcibly removed Jewish settlers from their homes in Gaza, now that he has admitted his mistake, will he forcibly put them back? Also didn’t those Jewish settlers sue the Israeli govt?
