Grey as a mouse,
Big as a house,
Nose like a snake,
I make the earth shake,
As I tramp through the grass;
Trees crack as I pass.
With horns in my mouth
I walk in the South,
Flapping big ears.
Beyond count of years
I stump round and round,
Never lie on the ground,
Not even to die.
Oliphaunt am I,
Biggest of all,
Huge, old, and tall.
If ever you’d met me
You wouldn’t forget me.
If you never do,
You won’t think I’m true;
But old Oliphaunt am I,
And I never lie.

Top Economics Aide Discloses Income
Summers Earned Salary From Hedge Fund, Speaking Fees From Wall St. Firms
Lawrence H. Summers, one of President Obama’s top economic advisers, collected roughly $5.2 million in compensation from hedge fund D.E. Shaw over the past year and was paid more than $2.7 million in speaking fees by several troubled Wall Street firms and other organizations.
Financial disclosure forms released late Friday by the White House show that many of Obama’s top aides earned generous salaries, investment income and fees for delivering speeches and serving on corporate boards. National security adviser James L. Jones earned $1.1 million last year in board compensation from five corporations, including defense contractor Boeing, in addition to $900,000 in salary from the U.S. Chamber of Commerce and hundreds of thousands more in consulting fees.

Huh, this is interesting as an example of natural selection observable within a human timeframe:
The harvest of elephants, both legal and illegal, has had some unexpected consequences on elephant anatomy as well. African ivory hunters, by killing only tusked elephants, have given a much larger chance of mating to elephants with small tusks or no tusks at all. The propagation of the absent-tusk gene has resulted in the birth of large numbers of tuskless elephants, now approaching 30% in some populations (compare with a rate of about 1% in 1930). Tusklessness, once a very rare genetic abnormality, has become a widespread hereditary trait.

Reinstated Chief Justice Iftikhar issues suo moto over flogging:
The Chief Justice of Pakistan (CJP), Justice Iftikhar Muhammad Chaudhry, on Friday took suo moto notice of a girl’s flogging in Swat and issued notices to the federal interior secretary and the chief secretary as well as the inspector general police, NWFP, to personally appear before the court on Monday.
He also directed the federal interior secretary to procure and produce the victim (girl) before the court on the date fixed. According to Reuters grainy video footage, which emerged on Friday, apparently shot with a mobile phone camera shows militants making the burqa-clad girl lie on the ground on her stomach. One man holds her feet and another her head while a third man with a black beard and turban flogs her with a leather strap. Men can be seen looking on.

re: #261 Thanos
Here we go:
Suo motu, meaning “on its own motion,” is a Latin legal term, approximately equivalent to the English term sua sponte. It is used, for example, where a government agency acts on its own cognizance, as in “the Commission took suo motu control over the matter.” Example - “there is no requirement that a court suo motu instruct a jury upon these defenses.” State v. Pierson.

General Cosgrove: We’re going to teach them climbing, canoeing, archery and shooting.
Reporterette:Shooting? That’s a bit irresponsible isn’t it?
General: I don’t see why, they’ll be properly supervised on the rifle range.
Reporter: Don’t you admit this is a terribly dangerous activity to be teaching children?
General: I don’t see how. We will be teaching them proper rifle discipline before they even touch a firearm.
Reporter:But you’re equipping them to become violent killers.
General Cosgrove: Well, ma’am you’re equipped to be a prostitute, but you’re not one are you?

Timmy’s in the well?
What? You never read that story in elementary school about the Chinese brothers? The oldest one had the most insanely preposterous honorific name assigned to him. I forget the exact details, it having been some decades since last I gave the volume my attention, but the gist of at least one part of it was he fell down a well, and the length and complexity of his name (which, as a first-born, must be spoken with respect) was such that his brothers were incapable of pronouncing it in a sufficiently timely manner to prevent his drowning in a well (they were trying to let their parents know about it).
Oh wait, here’s the link: http://www.amazon.com/dp/0805006621</?tag=littlegreenfo-20

Well, I tried to find one once, but I was looking in a patch of tall green grass. That was before I quit drinking. After I quit drinking, I didn’t much care to find elephants. You know, unless they have their toenails painted redish-pink, it’s awfully hard to find a green elephant in a patch of tall grass.

Well, naturally the boy-down-a-well leads to Lassie (damn but Timmy was one unlucky, clumsy kid, huh?) and the elaborate name could invoke the memory of the knights who formerly said ni! It could also, of course, invoke the memory of another pythonic classic, the very silly party:

A little bit of very obscure elephant-related literary trivia for the evening. In Chapter 3 of Through the Looking-Glass, Alice has the following monologue:
“Why, what are those creatures making honey down there? They can’t be bees — nobody ever saw bees a mile off, you know —” and for some time she stood silent, watching one of them that bustling about among the flowers, poking its proboscis into them, “just as if it was a regular bee,” thought Alice.
However, this was anything but a regular bee: in fact, it was an elephant — as Alice soon found out, though the idea took her breath away at first. “And what enormous flowers they must be!” was her next thought.
On one level, this works as pure silliness that a child reading the book can appreciate: a flying elephant using its trunk to suck the nectar from gigantic flowers. But there’s actually some sophisticated wordplay going on here: “Bee” sounds like “B,” which stands for “bishop,” a chess piece that was originally known by the Persian name fil, meaning…
[I see you shiver, with antici-]
[…]
[-pation]
…”elephant”!
The piece is still called “elephant” in Persian and Arabic (fil); Russian and Ukrainian chess players call the piece slon, which is simply a translation of fil and likewise means”elephant”; and various Western European languages call the piece by names that are different from their word for “elephant,” but that derive from the Persian via Arabic: alfil in Spanish and alfiere in Italian.
So the “elephants” observed by Alice are actually chess-bishops in disguise! (Bishops do not otherwise make an appearance in Through the Looking-Glass.)
