Real torture is listening to any liberal speak for more than a minute.
Apparently, the Obama administration doesn't seem to care too much about torture, especially when the victims are Americans.
The Obama administration has asked a federal judge to throw out a lawsuit against Iran filed by Americans held hostage at the U.S. Embassy in Tehran 30 years ago.

John Yoo, CIA memo lawyer, goes on offense
"Three thousand of our fellow citizens had been killed in a deliberate attack by a foreign enemy," Yoo told a packed auditorium on the Orange County campus. "That forced us in the government to have to consider measures to gain information using presidential constitutional provisions to protect the country from further attack."In a war with a non-state enemy that doesn't follow international law, getting information from captured combatants is vital, said Yoo, now a tenured law professor at the University of California, Berkeley. He said 50 percent of U.S. intelligence about Al Qaeda was gleaned from interrogations.
"Was it worth it?" he asked, brushing off the reaction. "We haven't had an attack in more than seven years."
I love this quote from the article:
Other legal scholars on both sides of the political spectrum, though, supported the notion of a nonjudgmental inquiry to shed light on where legal advisers went wrong in accommodating the harsh interrogation tactics.

The torture victim was identified by Nabulsi as an Afghan grain dealer, Mohammed Shah Poor, who the Sheikh accused of short changing on a grain delivery to his royal ranch on the outskirts of Abu Dhabi.
The UAE government, in its statement, says the matter was settled privately between the Sheikh and the grain dealer, "by agreeing not to bring formal charges against each other, i.e., theft on the one hand and assault on the other hand."
No words.
And remember, the UAE is supposed to be a relatively "moderate", "modern" Gulf state.

More about the story:
Nabulsi is suing for millions he says he is owed for various business deals. He also charges Sheik Issa and other members of the royal family with false imprisonment and with torturing him. Buzbee says he has three other torture videos. If he prevails, his lawyers said they would try to seize Issa's U.S. assets, which could include portions of the Abu Dhabi Investment Authority, which is the largest sovereign wealth fund in the world and has an estimated $875 billion in assets. Last year it invested $7.5 billion in Citigroup.
The lawsuit has been languishing in a Houston federal court for nearly two years as attorneys tried to serve Issa and others with court papers. Efforts to deliver the documents to the royal family through UAE lawyers have failed and a confirmation of mail delivery was returned unsigned, according to court records.

From Amnesty:

He may have been subjected to enforced disappearance. His family fears that he is held by the security forces in the UAE, and is at risk of torture and ill-treatment."

Thank you....it is just that seeing all the videos from MEMRI, seeing the brutality on TV, and also the father who lived here, in our country, who took his 2 sweet daughters for a ride in his cab, and killed them for the crime of acting 'American'?
And the videos of the perverted Disney characters brain washing children to grow up in that lovely one-off profession, homicide bomber? I will gladly deal with all the Jewish mother jokes re 'my son the lawyer' (and I really do have one) and the obligatory 'my son, the doctor'....here any mother wants her child to be well educated, race or religion, irrelevent..but to them? This is a perfect example of relativity I have written about before. Elements in America are going ballistic about water boarding three men who we knew were terrorists. We made them stay in cold rooms ( ever spent the night in the drunk tank?), preyed on their fear of bugs ( in an instant of childish immaturity, has anyone thrown a bug on a playmate?). Here we see a example of real torture, I am sure used not to gather critical information, but as a tool of punishment for some perceived misbehavior. We don't treat mass murderers this way. Child killers are slated for rehabilitation in our justice system. We worry that criminals we execute might feel something unpleasant as they die. People from the President of the United States on down need to wake up and realize the types of thinking we are dealing with and how they will act in the desire to hurt, maim, and kill us if we are not vigilant.

Las Vegas Property Venture Is in Peril
Dubai World Sues Partner MGM Mirage in Bid to Limit Exposure to Troubled $8.6 Billion City Center ProjectBy JEFFREY MCCRACKEN and TAMARA AUDI
A highly touted real-estate partnership between a major Dubai investor and one of the biggest casino operators in the U.S. is in danger of blowing up amid a plunge in Las Vegas gambling and tourism revenues.
Dubai World, a conglomerate owned by the Dubai government, is suing to limit its exposure to its troubled venture with MGM Mirage to develop the $8.6 billion City Center project on the Las Vegas Strip.
In a lawsuit filed Monday in Delaware Chancery Court, Dubai World asked the court to free it from making future payments and fulfilling other obligations under its partnership deal with MGM Mirage. It also blamed MGM Mirage for massive cost overruns on City Center -- a resort and residential complex rising on nearly 67 acres in the heart of Las Vegas. The project is owned jointly by MGM Mirage and a Dubai World subsidiary called Infinity World.
In a potentially greater blow to the project, Dubai World signaled in the lawsuit that it probably won't make a $100 million payment on the City Center project that is due Friday. That would intensify the financial pressure on the project and on MGM Mirage, both of which are struggling to meet looming debt obligations.
not exactly reliable business partners either....

Hopefully the 400K + men and women who gave their lives in WWII are not looking down on us as we morph into a nation of whiners and self-absorbed tweeters or whatever while the people who want to do us harm plot and plan without Congressional second-guessing. Instead of waterboarding, we should send these guys over to Georgetown to Barney Frank's condo on a Friday night with a tube of Astro-Lube taped to their foreheads so they can learn about how the Washington power structure really operates.

"They would keep him from sleeping, deny him his medications, tell him they were going to rape his wife, kill his child. They made him pose naked while they took pictures," the lawyer alleges.
So is this torture? According to what people are saying on this thread, I guess not. Or maybe it is when done in the UAE by Arabs, but not when done in a black ops prison in Bulgaria by Americans?

How many would be alive if regimes led by tyrants and murderers had been eliminated? We say we cannot interfere in the internal activities of other countries. But who can argue against the fact if men like Hitler, Pol Pot, Stalin, Idi Amin, Hirohito and Tojo, Saddam Hussein, had been eliminated by what ever means early on in their careers there would be literally hundreds of millions of people alive today who would otherwise been murdered in anonymity by these evil, yes evil people?

That was sick, that little animal "Sheik whoever" needs his ass kicked. He is such a puss he has to have the guy tied up AND a cop hold him down (the policeman followed accepted procedures according to the UAE) and only then can that little swish finally torture the guy. I wonder if the guy is crippled for life from it, I am sure he is. How on earth can we do business with fetid little sub-humans like this? When their oil runs out one day I hope they all starve to death in their tattered little kingdom in the sand.
All the US media should also be reporting on the slave labor from South Asia thats building their little paradise. Maybe talk about the suicides, the passports held hostage, the rape of female employees etc. Meanwhile try going to your little mansion on palm island and watch the e.coli swim by - nice!

This is the norm not the exception. I'm no expert, but was that 'Islamic"? I guess a good case could be made (under Shari'a law) either way depending on what the man was 'accused' of doing.
This is disgusting and unfortunately, further solidifies my feelings about the UAE in particular and Arab society in general.
The victim could just be a slave who got out of control and under Shari's law....
Disgusting.

We know the UAE is considered "moderate" in the arab world.
Let's suppose that is true.
So imagine for a moment what Israel faces in its neighborhood when behavior such as this is not even considered extreme.
It is an absolute miracle that Israel is not only able to fend off savages like this, but to retain its humanity considering it faces a life and death struggle with these "people" every minute, every hour, every day, and every year.

Perhaps this is just an exception. More normal would be religious police pushing schoolgirls back into burning buildings because the girls weren't wearing abayas, as happened in Mecca in 2002. And that's not torture, that's just good practice by diligent law enforcement to ensure "Promotion of Virtue and Prevention of Vice."

You think THATS sick, you should see the 18 minutes of pyramids and forced wearing of women's undies as a hat the guy had to go thru.....Im still sick to my stomach......

But our good friends with all the celebrity posters at the Huff Post would rather hang our own people for putting panties on a terrorists head.

Watching this, I can only say that those terrorists lock-up in Gitmo are truly blessed. Imagine that, instead being tortured by CIA with Big Macs and music, they were tortured by this UAE guys?
Note to leftists: This is real torture. What happened in Gitmo were only tender caresses compared with this. Stop being anti-american e protest against this torture. Yep, no protest. Leftists and islamofascists are united. Their target is the same: USA and Israel. Always were and always be.

UAE Royalty have pathetic firearm skills.
All those shots from about two yards away and they all missed.
Time they went to any range and practiced a bit.

Wow - now that is torture. Reading the ABC article it also mentions lighting the guy on fire and cattle prodding the anus. I've never been waterboarded, but I can't imagine it being significantly worse than what this guy went through. And you can bet the Sheikh didn't take him back to a comfy prison cell, dress his wounds and then feed him like the US detainees get.

No, no, no you got it all wrong.
This is not torture-- where are the panties on the head, the German sheapards, the phony electrodes?
Complain all you want but this ain't torture
/really needed?

Our enemies are laughing at us... and have been since, at least, 9/11. Most likely long before. Obama's back peddling from useful strategies, facilities and techniques isn't promoting respect. It's making us look like fools. We can be humane and effective, if we want. As the Bush administration was (even with all their flaws.)

re: #250 Summer
Who are we to judge their quaint, fascinating, and rich culture...we're just as evil, just as hypocritical, blah blah blah blah blah....Western Civilization is bad, everything else is good, speaking truth to power, blah blah blah, oppression of their people, imposing our values on them, it's just an Israeli-lobby conspiracy, neocons are to blame, the war in Iraq is to blame, blah blah blah blah blah.....Israel out of Palestine, just defending themselves, terrorism is in the eye of the beholder, just responding to our treatment of their prisoners, blah blah blah blah blah.....
You forgot GWB

Torture is only torture because it is defined as such by the modern liberal west. Torture was used by every culture in every part of the world routinely until it started to be frowned upon by Enlightenment intellectuals who saw it as an assault on inalienable rights of mind and body.
So, while Islam and Muslims cannot be singled out, this well known story (taken from the first biographer and devout follower of Muhammad) shows the utter normalcy of torture:
i
nana b. al-Rabi`, who had the custody of the treasure of B. al-Nadir, was brought to the apostle who asked him about it. He denied that he knew where it was. A Jew came (T. was brought) to the apostle and said that he had seen Kinana going round a certain ruin every morning early. When the apostle said to Kinana, "Do you know that if we find you have it I shall kill you?" he said Yes. The apostle gave orders that the ruin was to be excavated and some of the treasure was found. When he asked him about the rest he refused to produce it, so the apostle gave orders to al-Zubayr b. al-`Awwam, "Torture him until you extract what he has," so he kindled a fire with flint and steel on his chest until he was nearly dead. Then the apostle delivered him to Muhammad b. Maslama and he struck off his head, in revenge for his brother Mahmud. (Ibn Ishaq, Sirat Rasul Allah, translated as, The Life of Muhammad, (tr. A. Guillaume), Karachi: Oxford University Press, 1998, p. 515.)
But, again, for a more universal portrait, read Las Casas and see what Catholics did to natives in the Americas and then of course what those Aztecs and Incas were doing to each other. Not pretty.

re: #248 BakiShamil
Human Rights Commissions, UN and all other trash organizations are bunch of savages....God forbid if Israel have done this to their enemies and someone would expose this publicly. I guarantee we would have one more round of hateful and violent outburst from so called f**k faces palis and their comrades from the left lunatics. Damn right I am racist (with balance morals) and i will not deny it but i can prove you i am surrounded by a diverse crowd who feels very comfortable with me socializing on all levels.
Israel, Jerusalem, Zion
Are you really "racist" meaning you think races -- and by the way please define "race" -- are endowed with superior and inferior morals that they pass to their children through DNA? If so, you are also an idiot. I think you are probably believe that some cultures are better than others which is quite a different thing and at least arguable.

Islamophobia! No torture here, there's neither a water board nor an American in sight. Probably related to their local housing crisis, so as good friends we should send Barney Frank to soothe things over.

Check out what wikipedia.org says about his brother - Falah bin Zayed bin Sultan Al Nahyan:
"The sheikh was the subject of a lawsuit filed in Geneva by an American national, asserting that the sheikh hit him repeatedly with a belt with a steel buckle after he declined a bottle of champagne from the sheik, in an incident occurring at the posh La Reserve Hotel some four years ago. The U.S. citizen said that after he refused the champagne the sheik, whom he had never met, came up behind him, jostled his glasses, sat in his lap and tried to kiss and fondle him. When the American protested, the assault began, he said."

That looks pretty nasty compared to the videotapes of the CIA enhanced interrogations.
Or would if those tapes hadn't been destroyed for "national security reasons". But you can trust the CIA on this one. It was just like a fraternity prank. Khalid Sheik Mohammed was seen on the tapes joking with his questioners and asking if they'd like to meet his daughter. It was all so innocent and everybody had a graet time. You'd see that if those tapes hadn't been destroyed for "national security reasons".

re: #254 astronmr20
You saw what in the malls there?
I lived in the UAE for a brief time and never saw such a thing. Please elaborate.
(That doesn't mean I don't believe you-- I'll never go back to this disgusting place)
I was in one of Dubai's malls when what appeared to be a local reached under his robe and produced a belt and started beating the piss out of what I assumed to be his son. Another time I was in the Carrefor (sp?), which is like a grocery store - Walmart combo when, again, what appeared to be a local woman started beating the hell out of a person I assumed to be the family's nanny / housekeeper or something like that. In neither case did anyone interfere. I've seen this type of thing several times with workers on the waterfront where our ship was docked and also in teh Electronics Souq where one of those guys with the 500 year-old looking carts got his ass kicked by one of the merchants. Anyway you slice it, not a very nice place. If I was Master of the Universe, and I was going to give the Earth an enema, I would stick the hose in Dubai.

Those bastards! I go down to the UAE from here in Kuwait quite frequently for business purposes (I'm a DoD employee and we have work for the Iraqis we perform down there) and ALL they write about in their newspapers is how barbaric the Israelis are and "how low the Americans have stooped with their 'torture' of the gitmo detainees". ALL the worlds problems are the fault of the big bad Israelis and American government, the Bush administration in particular.
Bush has been out of office now for better than 3 months but they STILL love blaming him for all the natural disasters in the world. But I doubt very much that you will read about this in their newspapers OR they'll slant the story to make the readers believe that their beloved sheik was really the victim. OR, most likely, they'll call America a bunch of hypocrites for calling THIS out when it was us who "tortured" people at Gitmo.
Forget the fact that Khalid Sheik Mohammad strategically planned the murder of 3,000 innocent people on 9/11 AND who methodically sawed off the head of an innocent person and put the video on the internet for the world to see, whereas this man's crime was supposedly shortchanging the sheik. Forget the fact that the coercive techniques used on Mohammad were for the purpose of extracting valuable information out of him and did indeed succeed in getting him to spill the beans about future terrorist plots that were then thwarted, whereas the sheik tortured AND MAIMED this man for REVENGE purposes. OR possibly even to satisfy a sadistic sexual fetish.
NO, the local UAE media will throw this moral equivalency garbage at the Western world and will make no distinctions.
The crap you read in the Kaleej Times is the most sickening bunch of lies and propaganda that you'll ever read on this earth.
