I won’t ever forget 9/11 or the way New York looked that day.
Just today I learned something today about Barbara Olson, a brave woman on board the plane that hit the Pentagon, who called her husband, Justice Dept. attorney Ted Olson, to alert him and to say goodbye.
Ms. Olson was on that 9/11 plane because she had delayed a trip to be home for her husband’s birthday.
I am campaigning for a woman candidate here in Virginia who arranged Ms. Olson’s Catholic funeral.

These pictures give me September 11 flashbacks.
I can never forget.
I took so many digital photographs of lower Manhattan and midtown in the days following 9/11 (I lived on the Lower East Side at the time) and unfortunately my daughter accidentally erased my external hard drive (where the photos were stored) and they are lost. I had tons of photos of the event itself, the aftermath, walking around the neighborhood seeing crying people on the street. Photos of a completely empty lower Broadway and West Broadway below Houston. Photos of the hundreds of missing flyers that were plastered everywhere and images of memorials laid at the door of multiple firehouses. All lost.
I did keep the external hard drive and never used it again in the event I can find some place to retrieve the data. I tried everything I could think of on my own but couldn’t access it.

Unless it was securely erased, there are places that can recover quite a bit, if not all, but we’re talking a lot of money.
If it was just the directory info, it is easier, but pictures are hard to recover, because there is no easy way to tell which file block goes with which picture and where.

Well, what she did was simply drag the external drive icon the trash and then select “empty” when prompted. At least that’s what I think happened. I wasn’t nearby when she did it. All I know is that when I tried to get into the external drive again it asked if I wanted to reformat since it wasn’t recognized. I never reformated but simply disconnected everything and hoped someday that I could access it.

For some reason I got a kick out of the picture with mainly big guys wearing heavy jackets. I see the theme is “people looking up”, but I’d like to see some of his images based on class… City workers, fire, PD, blue collar guys, rich women with dogs, things like that… It seems like you could have endless fun with this approach.
If it’s based on random images, though, maybe themes present themselves.

She had to do more for it to ask to be reformatted. If it was just dragged to the trash, that would delete everything on it.
I assume this is a PC, because that ejects an external drive on a Mac. (BTW, my Mac broke again one day after it was fixed. )
This might be as simple as the volume data being lost, but the rest of the data (including directory structure) is intact, or the directory data could have been erased. It is possible more damage was done, but my guess is the partition was deleted, which only really deletes the partition from the partition table. Do NOT reformat it; I think the data might be recoverable by rebuilding the partition table.
There are people who can do this. Make sure they make an image of the disk first; a block-by-block copy that preserves everything on the original. Then, they can work on the copy.
It probably isn’t ridiculously expensive to diagnose this; they could tell you if it is an easy recovery or a hard one, but my guess tends towards the easy side.

Great info Kosh’s Shadow. Thanks.
It was a Mac. And you’re right about ejecting a drive when dragging to the trash. That is what happens when I drag my current external drive icon the trash. It just ejects.
I really do not know what she did. I got on my computer after she had used it and noticed my external hard drive icon was not on the desktop. The drive was turned on and connected so I restarted the computer but when I tried to access the external I got the message that it was not formatted and “would you like to format” type of question. I may be missing a few details since it was a while ago.

OK. Again, I think this only erased the partition from the partition table, and didn’t erase the data.
(A disk has a table that tells where each partion is and how big it is. Then somewhere, is information on each partition. I think this just erased the entry in the partition table, but that’s it.
You could start with the “genius bar” of your local Apple store, actually.
Get them to image the drive first, if they have the right software.
You never know; they could make it worse like my Macbook pro that they had last week, and replaced the optical drive and some other parts, and then, the next day, it died (no light on the screen; no display on an external monitor; but it does make some noises indicating it is doing something)
(I’m going to keep bringing this up because that machine is a lemon. Maybe they’ll replace it, after replacing the optical drive twice, the battery once, the keybard once, and the screen once, and whatever is wrong with it now)

It might have been Obama’s DHS security probe but it had a big “thing” on top of it with 4 cameras. Driving maybe 20 mph. I assumed google van but it might be something else.
I thought perhaps it had some sort of logo on it.
No logo - I think I would go with it being Obama’s DHS security probe, as you said.

Today, my iPhone has suddenly developed an inability to recognize when I want the audio in regular “phone” mode…. that is, I don’t get any audio if I just hold it up to my ear. It thinks the earbud/microphone is plugged in, even though it’s not. It works fine on speakerphone or with a bluetooth headset. But just won’t work as a regular “phone” setup. I’ve switched it off and on… switched airplane mode off and on… resynched with my Mac. Nothing works.
Any thoughts?

OK. Again, I think this only erased the partition from the partition table, and didn’t erase the data.
(A disk has a table that tells where each partion is and how big it is. Then somewhere, is information on each partition. I think this just erased the entry in the partition table, but that’s it.You could start with the “genius bar” of your local Apple store, actually.
Maybe they’ll replace it, after replacing the optical drive twice, the battery once, the keybard once, and the screen once, and whatever is wrong with it now)
Thanks K.S. We finally have an Apple store here in Maine so maybe I’ll take the drive in. I thought I could only take Macs to the Apple store and since the external drive is a third party product it never occurred to me to let Apple look at it. I really would love to get those photos back.
Incidentally, my daughter who accidentally erased the files was nearly 1 year old on 9/11 and there are dozens of photos of her immediately following 9/11 in her stroller at Union Square, Washington Square, SoHo, Lower East Side, Canal Street, in front of the “missing” fliers, firehouses, etc. I would think she would like to have those photos when she grows up.

Did you just switch it on and off, or did you try a reset?
It’s perfectly safe to do one. Hold down both the on-off and home buttons for six seconds or until the Apple logo appears. Ignore the “slide to turn off” or whatever it says message and just wait for the Apple.
The phone will reset (takes a little while) and your problem might disappear. I was having problems with screen sensitivity and that fixed it.
Do it now and tell me what happens.

Sadly, the possibility exists that disagreeing with “The Winner” will become utterly forbidden.
Principles matter, Parties and tit-for-tat politics don’t.
Just once I’d like to hear a Leftist actually defend Leftism without curling up in the corner and crying “Nazi”.
Anyone who supports Obama has to (intellectually, if not publicly) understand that for every “responsibility” Barry claims the Gov’t will take on, a right will be lost.
That’s the major vein of dishonesty that runs through all Leftists, actually. They say that they’ll take the responsibility for something (health care, global warming/cooling, education, etc.) and never, ever point out the inextricable link between rights and responsibilities.
Screw ‘em all. Liberals are a fact of life, just like small pox or shark attacks. Gotta deal with ‘em even if you don’t want to, and it will probably do no good in the long run.

How old is your phone? Try calling AppleCare:[no phone numbers allowed]. I’ve had nothing but good experiences with those guys. They were on the phone with me for an hour and a half once to solve an intractable problem involving FileVault (hint: if you run a Mac computer, and you’re not a CIA agent, NEVER turn on FileVault) and Leopard.
If it’s within the one-year warranty and needs replacing, they’ll do it. A regular sync before you send it back (or take it to the Apple Store) and another when you get the new phone and you’re done.
But they may have a trick or two they can tell you about on the phone.

Sleepyone - the print-on-demand seems to be working well.

The odds are in the Lions’ favor that their record will improve next season.
As long as they lose both of the their games against the Bears, I do hope they improve. Of course, the Bears should win the NFC North this year. With our new quarterback, our offense is better than its been in the last twenty years.

Security Before Politics
By Porter J. Goss
Today, I am slack-jawed to read that members claim to have not understood that the techniques on which they were briefed were to actually be employed; or that specific techniques such as “waterboarding” were never mentioned. It must be hard for most Americans of common sense to imagine how a member of Congress can forget being told about the interrogations of Sept. 11 mastermind Khalid Sheik Mohammed. In that case, though, perhaps it is not amnesia but political expedience.
Let me be clear. It is my recollection that:
— The chairs and the ranking minority members of the House and Senate intelligence committees, known as the Gang of Four, were briefed that the CIA was holding and interrogating high-value terrorists.
— We understood what the CIA was doing.
— We gave the CIA our bipartisan support.
— We gave the CIA funding to carry out its activities.
— On a bipartisan basis, we asked if the CIA needed more support from Congress to carry out its mission against al-Qaeda.

Hey Dark_Falcon - from your link:
That’s where Operation Mend came in.A one-of-kind partnership between the UCLA medical Center and Brooke, the program provides reconstructive surgery to members of the military who’ve been severely disfigured in Iraq and Afghanistan. So far, 24 men and women have been treated.
At Brooke, Mikeworth endured about 16 surgeries, many on the lower right arm that he almost lost in the blast.Mikeworth’s road to recovery has been part medical marvel, part profile in courage — the stalwart soldier who rebuilds his confidence as doctors rebuild his face.
All along, as UCLA surgeons have tucked and trimmed, adding a bit of cartilage here, a flap of skin there.
“I was pretty gruesome in the beginning,” he says. “I looked like I came out of some Halloween horror movie. I know that. Sometimes if I was having a bad day, I’d get mad at the situation I found myself in, but I would never get angry at the people.”
But his appearance didn’t faze his sons, Ryan, 7, and Connor, 6.
They brought laughter into the home when they returned from a two-month stay with his wife’s parents in Illinois.
Sgt. Mikeworth hopes to join an Army unit by summer. He’s on medical hold while he looks for a suitable slot. He’s thinking about military intelligence or becoming an instructor.
“I don’t want to be put on a shelf or a back burner, or left in a corner anywhere,” he says.
[emphasis realwest]
I still am amazed that America continues to find such fine men and woman who are so willing to defend her. And I can’t begin to tell you how impressed I am with with UCLA and Brooke. Now if only more private hospitals would pitch in, that would be just great.
And I thank Sgt Mikeworth for his service and his inspiration.

Unless it was securely erased, there are places that can recover quite a bit, if not all, but we’re talking a lot of money.
If it was just the directory info, it is easier, but pictures are hard to recover, because there is no easy way to tell which file block goes with which picture and where.
I’m replying to this late, but it caught my attention. It would be such a shame if all of those photos of such a horrible moment in history were to be lost.
There are museums that have dedicated a lot of resources to preserving memories of 9/11. I’ll bet one of them would pay or use their own people to try to recover that hard drive. The New-York Historical Society comes to mind. I saw a very poignant 9/11 exhibit there once.

I gotta be honest here - for a long time I thought the Cowboys were the second coming of Montana and the ‘49er’s. Then Jerry Jones didn’t like the fact that HIS chosen head coach, Jimmy, started getting more press and WHAM - Jimmy was gone.
I honestly think that although Jerry deserves a lot of credit for taking a laughingstock of a team to the top of the heaps several times, in many ways he’s just too much like George Steinbrenner used to be.

Yo, Real. Keeping well?
So anyone who voted for Obama is a “socialist”? That’ll surprise a whole lotta people…
I’ve always been a registered Independent. Means I can’t vote in the state-sponsored nominating conventions known as “primaries” in the state I live in, but I won’t be pegged as a Demublican or a Republicrat.
I voted for Gore in 2000, Bush in 2004, and Obama in 2008. And if she grows a brain I would even consider voting for Palin in 2012 (not likely, but if she won me over I would).
I reject hysteria from the right and the left.

Beware the Poppy Seed Cake recipe if you work for a company who may request random drug testing. My friend’s daughter had a good friend in her rehab who baked a poppy seed cake from a box. She happened to be pregnant, so she ate most of it in one sitting. She had to submit to a urinalysis per the terms of her probation, and it took months in front of several judges to prove she wasn’t using cocaine - she simply ate too much poppy seed cake. Bizarre, but true.

Not quite the same thing. I’m sure there are plenty of artists whose politics I disagree with, but who never felt the need to incorporate “FUCK BUSH” (plus Trooferism) into their work.
Anyway, I’m just not much of a rap/hip-hop fan to begin with (with very scattered exceptions).

Regarding the cookbook (#1) -
Beware the Poppy Seed Cake recipe if you work for a company who may request random drug testing.
Trust me BBMom…stick with the Tilapia. ;)

So what you’re saying is that you didn’t read his books, and rather than defend Leftist intrusion into free eneterprise, you posit that Rightists would have done the same?
Oy, you’re quite a specimen.
No, you’re saying I didn’t read his books. Whatevs. You’re quite a mind reader.
Who started the bailouts? Hmm? You don’t think McCain would have done something very similar to Obama? All the mainstream economists were screaming we’d all die - die, I tell you! - if the banks and insurance thieves didn’t get a blank check. That wouldn’t have happened if John Maverick had been selected? Wanna buy a bridge?
As for free enterprise, we haven’t had it for decades. We’ve had corporate welfare, revolving-door Schmiergeld politics, subsidized losers, socialized losses and privatized gains. Anyone remember Enron and the Keating five? Whose watch were they on?
And you want me to believe that Obama is going to turn us into Cuba with superhighways? Got another bridge you should look at…
What happens, see, is there’s a secret room 44 stories below the White House, and right after a new guy is sworn in, he’s taken down there and shown the statue of Baphomet and initiated into the secret handshakes and the magic underwear and the 33rd degree master mason arcana, and told that he can have his fun for four or eight years but this and this and this are lines he doesn’t want to cross if he prefers to keep his nuts in the sack, and by the time it’s all over, you get a left-of-center or right-of-center guy who’s bound to disappoint his followers and surprise his opponents.
And what’s left of the Republic sails merrily on, with Larry Summers or Brent Scowcroft in the catbird seat and all the reformers from right and left stuck in the cold with their noses pressed up against the glass.
And now I have to go watch “Dollhouse” and pretend Eliza Dushku is my g/f. Sad life, I know, but it beats obsessing about things that really, truly just aren’t gonna happen.

What the heck is going on?!
Lieberman: Israel won’t strike Iran - even if sanctions fail
Israel will not attack Iran even if the international sanctions against Tehran fail to convince President Mahmoud Ahmadinejad to give up his country’s nuclear program, Foreign Minister Avigdor Lieberman told the Austrian daily Kleine Zeitung. In an interview published this weekend, Lieberman was asked whether Israel planned to strike Iran as a last resort.“We are not talking about a military attack. Israel cannot resolve militarily the entire world’s problem. I propose that the United States, as the largest power in the world, take responsibility for resolving the Iranian question,” Lieberman told the paper.
“The best way to stop Iran’s nuclear program is through severe sanctions, very severe sanctions,” he said. “The resolutions of the UN Security Council are insufficient. Iran must be presented with harsher and more effective sanctions. It worked against Libya. We must isolate Iran; only this way will results be possible.”
Lieberman reiterated his position that Iran is an international problem
Could this just be a diplomatic ploy? As much as I agree with many of his views, I don’t see Lieberman as being a very tactful diplomat about this sorta thing. He’s too prone to speaking his mind. Then again, that just makes him more effective as a bluff or cover.
Any thoughts?

I think an Israelis attack on the Iranian nuclear weapons sites unlikely for several reasons, chief among them is that successfully stopping the Iranian program is highly problematic given the dispersal of assets etc… Anyone who thinks this would be a repeat of the attack on Saddam’s reactor in 1981 is simply misinformed.

It sounds like Haaretz might have misinterpreted - figures:
The FM told the newspaper he does not believe Israel can tackle the Iranian nuclear threat on its own. “The most effective way (to curtail Tehran’s nuclear program) is to impose very harsh sanctions. The UN’s resolutions are insufficient. This method worked with Libya. Iran must be isolated.

One more from Arutz Sheva:
Foreign Minister Lieberman also downplayed the chances of Israel carrying out a military attack on Iran to halt or destroy its nuclear program. “The most effective way is to impose very harsh sanctions. “We are not talking about a military strike. Israel cannot solve a global problem militarily.”
Again, it doesn’t seem to be ruling out military action, just saying that it might not be the best option.

re: #443 OldLineTexan
helped
Actually, no.
Here’s the reality: The state I live in has been absolutely rock-solid Democrat territory for generations. We had a Repub gov for one term, that was it.
I voted for Bush in 2004 because I thought it was the right thing to do, though it brought Bush not one iota of advantage as far as the Electoral College is concerned. I blasted Bush when he was wrong and supported him when he was right, and nearly got disowned by my moonbat family for my pains.
I’ve disliked McCain for years, and Palin was - for me - an insult to the American voter. “Let’s see if I can pander to the worst elements of the GOP, because I’m a maverick, my poll numbers suck, and what the hell, she winked at me in our first interview - the old guy almost stood at attention.” It was a paltry move by a goofy old man, and it backfired BIG TIME.
And so I held my nose and voted for Obama. And I’ll be darned if I can see where all the screeching and shouting about “tyranny” and “we’re all gonna lose our guns/rights/minds/fortunes” is coming from, except that Beck and Coulter and Rush and Ron Paul and Alex Jones and all the other opportunistic shriekers are stirring the shit for all they’re worth and cleaning up in the process. I have zero respect for that.
And if I’m wrong I’ll eat that tricorne with mustard on it. But unless the right goes completely insane and starts a civil war, I’m betting my life, my property and my sacred honor that America will still be America in four or eight years, and we’ll get a new set of opportunists to screw us from the other end for a while.
Cynical? You betcha. I’m older than dirt and I’ve been on the merry-go-round for more years than Noah spent days and nights on the ark.
I’m a fan of Mark Twain, Kurt Vonnegut, Jonathan Swift, James Joyce, John le Carré and Rabelais, and you can’t read those guys for long and not realize that we’re on a swinging pendulum circling a circus of clowns and mountebanks, with nothing but ships full of fools on the horizon, and only our humor to keep us from falling into Poe’s pit.
To conclude, a poem:
Be Angry At The Sun
Robinson JeffersThat public men publish falsehoods
Is nothing new. That America must accept
Like the historical republics corruption and empire
Has been known for years.Be angry at the sun for setting
If these things anger you. Watch the wheel slope and turn,
They are all bound on the wheel, these people, those warriors.
This republic, Europe, Asia.Observe them gesticulating,
Observe them going down. The gang serves lies, the passionate
Man plays his part; the cold passion for truth
Hunts in no pack. You are not Catullus, you know,
To lampoon these crude sketches of Caesar. You are far
From Dante’s feet, but even farther from his dirty
Political hatreds.Let boys want pleasure, and men
Struggle for power, and women perhaps for fame,
And the servile to serve a Leader and the dupes to be duped.
Yours is not theirs.

Thanks, my friend.
As for the guns thing: I started my collection during those years. What was the upshot? I bought everything my little heart desired, all legally. The hi-cap mag restrictions weren’t retroactive, and there were plenty still on the market. And then those laws got repealed. Same for “scary” and “ugly” guns. I know the media can’t tell its ass from its mouth when it comes to firearms, I hear them all the time saying “it was a semi-automatic weapon” as if that were particularly frightening. But it doesn’t work. I live within an hour’s drive from DC and everything I own is straight-up legal and secured at my expense in a full-size Wells Fargo safe against would-be “borrowers”. Sure, you can’t by ammo right now for love or money, but that’s because the whackaloons are in full-on panic mode, as though we haven’t been there before.
Thing about pendulums is, they swing back and forth but the path they describe, absent outside impetus, actually gets smaller with time and eventually reaches stasis.
So fear not. You may hate Obama and I may despise Palin, but neither one of them is going to define America. America is what it is, a big-ass ball of contradictions and possibilities, and that’s kinda how I like it.

The only “screaming” you’ll hear is at the wack-sites that you must deliberately seek out.
Most conservatives I know would be glad to explain, in very soft tones if necessary, how Obama is aiming to remake our system of Government into one that more closely meets his under-graduate brain’s idea of what works.
Pretending that all opposition to a massive overhaul of our economic system is somehow “reactionary” points out how fearful people are of actually looking at the likely results.
Read his books (I ‘m not sure if you have or not, but you don’t seem to have gotten the central message of either one of them), look at what he wants to do, look at what he has done, and look at where you think that will lead.
Do you really think that imaginary money and kisses on the cheek to dictators will solve our economic and defense woes?

For those who can relate:
Throughout the 60’s and 70’s, KOMA was the favorite of teens all across the western US. With the big 50,000-watt signal and the relatively few rock-n-roll radio stations across the plains, KOMA was the main station for the hits. KOMA (along with handful of other legendary stations including 890 WLS, Chicago; 1090 KAAY, Little Rock; 1060 WNOE, New Orleans; 770 WABC, New York; 800 CKLW, Windsor/Detroit; and 1100 WKYC, Cleveland) could be heard on car radios, in homes, and everywhere a kid could tune in. Often teens in New Mexico, Arizona, Wyoming, Kansas, Colorado, Nebraska, and other western states would eagerly await sunset when the mighty 1520 would come booming through with the newest hits of the day. They would sit in their cars on hilltops, turn it up at parties, or fall asleep with the radio next to their beds as they listened to Chuck Berry, the Supremes, Paul Revere and the Raiders, and the Beatles. Soldiers in Viet Nam even reported tuning in KOMA to give them a little feeling of being back home.
Led through the 60’s by Program Directors Dean Johnson, Dale Wehba, and Perry Murphy, some of the best-remembered DJ’s spun the hits each day and night. Charlie Tuna, Dale Wehba, Don McGregor, Paul Miller, John David, Chuck Dann, J. Michael Wilson, Johnny Dark, Buddy Scott, John Ravencroft, and many others were among those who played the hits from the studios in Moore, Oklahoma. And everyone remembers “Yours Truly KOMA” and the “kissing tone.” This was definitely an era where radio was fun. It was more than just the music. It was a magical blend of personality, jingles, contests, and fun mixed with the greatest music that defined the era and continues to live today.
These were considered by many to be the best years of radio. And for baby boomers across the western US, KOMA was king.

The Obama admin has slowly been turning against Israel and this is just more proof of that.
With that said, the Israeli govt. concerns me a bit with the FM first saying there is no chance of peace with Syria and then saying he’d talk with Syria “tonight” and the same flip flopping in regards to Iran and the “peace process.”
