Video: Guatemalan Bat Falcon
So, you’re a bat. You’re just flappin’ around some Mayan ruins, looking for bugs to eat, and suddenly — the bat falcon!
Now, you’re an ex-bat.

Elephants painted in black and white were paraded at the Ayutthaya elephant camp, north of Bangkok, Friday to commemorate the birth of a panda cub at the Chiang Mai Zoo.
The May 27 birth occurred after years of artificial insemination and efforts to get its celibate parents to mate, triggering a national craze for the animals.

Change for Iran, continuation from last thread of his story, and his information on PersianKiwi:
In last days Reza said it looked they get a little more organized and start searching for any special case in arrested people
unfortunately Reza’s mother told everything she knows over the phone to a man calling from Evin
the man promised Reza’s family they will release him if he’s really innocent
and after they knew Reza is a student they moved him to a more harsh environment with some other people
according to Reza some students from Polytechnic university were also there
they prevented them from sleeping by kept them standing all the night
in morning a man introduced him self as Intelligent came saying he will record their confections with camera
he promised if one of them confess in front of camera he will free them all & they will blur his face & nothing to worry!
at night around 10PM they Released Reza & his family instantly moved him to a hospital for internal bleeding
Reza had no idea why they suddenly released him & some of his inmates
I skipped some of the incidents as Reza requested. he’s very weak both mentally & physically
and I don’t want to put him in more pressure of any kind right now
we passed a letter to Karoubi today describing everything we know about various students conditions
sorry I can’t answer to you all, very bad internet connection, but I’m good and I can walk short distances
heard about @PersianKiwi I have no idea how they captured him/her, he/she was using freegate I guess
I don’t think if gov really captured PersianKiwi, they knew about his/her twitter & hopefully will be released soon

Hit your pause button (lower left) near the beginning, allow time for buffers to fill some, then hit play. Connection speed (or lack thereof) is more of a problem with the HQ flavor of the video. Or you can try downloading the vid to watch offline (easier said than done, sometimes).

UGH! Bats! Rabies on wings, moon and otherwise!
When a kid we bought a huge old victorian that was infested with the nasty, nasty vermin. Nothing like the 2AM wakeup…squeek, flap, flap, flap, squeek, squeek followed closely by my sisters screeming!
the lower level of this 3-story monster consisted of 4 rooms interconnected by sliding oak wall panels. My dad and I would open them up and, position ourselves at opposite sides and attempt to knock the bastids down. Baseball bat does no work- they evade every time. We settled on tennis rackets with great success. *Thwack* Then move in for the coup de grace.

Mothballs contain napthalene, which has a smell most mammals and insects (including moths and bats) really don’t like. Heating them drives it off as vapor (low volatization point), with a result sort of like tear-gassing the chimney.
Personally, I like bats, but even I’d have a few words with them if they tried to go condo in my chimney.

The bats that I have at my house are Mexican Free Tail bats, somewhat smaller than a brown I think, but that’s about all I know about them.
Are they here legally? Do they eat over construction sites at night?

Mexican Free Tail Bats were used in a secert weapon project in WWII. The idea was to carry an timed incendiary device strapped to the bat’s leg into a Japanese house and set it afire. A bomb was designed to carry the bats and a test was arranged. The bomb was accidentaly dropped while loading in to the airplane that was to do the test. The bats all escaped with their incendiary devices and many buildings at the base burned to the ground. True story.

Family help-desk tales:
For the last 15 minutes, I’ve been listening to my wife in the next room making suggestions, trying to help her dad get online with his computer and single outbound phone line. She just asked him, “wait, are you talking to me on your cell, or are you on the house phone?”
I was driving home, calling my wife on my cell phone. She answered the home phone, said,” I can barely understand you. Talk to me when you get home.”
I drove in, walked in the door, found my Wife in the bathroom. I picked up the home phone and called her cell phone. She, not realizing I was home, ran out, picked up her cell phone, said,”hello?”, to which I replied,”can you hear me now?” Then she checked the caller ID.
Laughter ensued.

As I predicted this morning, Congressman Roberto Micheletti has been sworn in as president of Honduras, as prescribed by the constitution, and the American media have weighed in on the side of usurper, outlaw, and Chavista agent Zelaya
Soldiers ousted the democratically elected president of Honduras on Sunday and Congress named a successor, but the leftist ally of Venezuelan President Hugo Chavez denounced what he called an illegal coup and vowed to stay in power.
The first military takeover of a Central American government in 16 years drew widespread condemnation from governments in Latin America and the world, and Chavez vowed to overthrow the country’s apparent new leader.
Note the loaded term “democratically elected” in the very first sentence. Yes, little Z was democratically elected, with the help of Cuban backed and trained ACORN style thugs. So was the revered lefty martyr Allende whom this phrase is intended to invokve. Otoh, so was Richard Nixon, whom the leftist media removed 35 years ago in a “coup” of their own.
More relevantly, the Honduran Congress was also democratically elected and, as in this country, the supreme court is the final arbiter of what is or is not legal.
“The first military takeover of a Central American government in 16 years” is a lie unless, of course, you are a leftist and you consider the government and the dear leader to be one and the same, as they are in Cuba, North Korea and other workers’ paradises around the globe.
There is no evidence at all that the military has taken over the government in the relevant sense of displacing civil and constitutional authority. They acted under orders from legal and constitutional authorities and those authorities remain in control. As I predicted this morning, the president of congress, Roberto Micheletti, has been sworn in as president.
Hugo is actually threatening war over this. Bring it, Pumpkin head. One of my best friends from college is a Honduran general. If Hugo sends his redshirts to Honduras, I will go there myself to fight them, assuming I can get there before they are wiped out or rounded up.
(Before anyone accuses me of making idle threats, remember that I made the same threat/promise about Iraq and, hey, guess what?)
It’s ironic that lefties and their ass-bitches in the American media complain constantly about American intervention, but it was the Venezuelan government that printed the illegal ballots, the Venezuelan air force that flew them to Tegucigalpa in defiance of local authorities, and the Venezuelan dictator who is now threatening war if his demands are not met.
It is the left and their shills who are trying to stage a coup and they are doing it on behalf of foreign interests including Castro, Chavez, and the American left.

random weird thoughts of the day driven by the bat falcon video. In the first Star Wars movie (okay, IV for the purists) when the Millennium Falcon escapes from the Death Star to deliver the engineering specs to the rebels, the rebel base buildings are modeled on the Mayan temples. (check the scene for yourself, Lucas has mentioned the temples were his inspiration for the rebel buildings)
They don’t eat bats, but for a whole bunch of years a few raptors ( No, not the F-22) have built nests on the upper stories of downtown Chicago office buildings and feast on the pigeon population. Kinda gross , yet cool at same time to be walking down a sidewalk and seeing a eaten out pigeon carcass at your feet as you walk by. Not sure what type of raptor birds they are, but I guess the high buildings and the streets below remind them of mountains and valleys

O.T. some of you may recall that my friend Ted, a 75 year old drag racer was injured in crash of his twin Turbo Studebaker a few weeks back. Well, he’s back at in the Pure Stock Muscle car drags with a stock, supercharged 1963 Studebaker. (Stude Tomato) I just got this:
Ted and The Tomato won their shootout against Jeff’s 1969 Pontiac Custom S 350 HO, 4-speed. Ted’s best run was a 13.09 against his best of 12.99, both on street tires and full exhaust.
Ted and Jeff swapped Rounds One & Two in the shootout, throwing the decision to the do-or-die Round Three everyone tries to avoid. Ted had an excellent reaction time and stayed ahead of Jeff to win Round Three and, thus, his shootout.
Ted reported feeling very good about racing again. He and The Tomato performed well, with several reaction times well under .100, so The Master didn’t lose a thing inside the brain box when The Chicken Hawk tumbled last month.
Chuck Kern likewise did very well, posting his Best ET and Speed ever in his 1963 R2/Powershift Avanti.
Chuck was paired with a 1965 Olds 442/4-speed and, like Ted, they traded Rounds One and Two to trip the trigger for Round Three. As sometimes happens when a GM guy is faced with that much tension and the possibility of losing to a Studebaker, he red-lighted big time, Chuck said, handing the Shootout’s 2-out-of-3 contest to Chuck.

DOH! Yeah, still trying to think here. One good bit of news over all though. If I remember correctly, there doesn’t seem to be many military takeovers that there were. It actually seems fairly quiet. I wonder how much was influenced by Castro funnelling arms to every single insurgent, communist organization? Seemed to really quiet down with the fall of the Soviet Union.

The Cold War was definitely a factor. Now I’m guessing that it’s corruption (and I mean the billions of drug dollars kind of corruption) that makes the most trouble. And, of course, the lingering issues from all their past crooked regimes.

Is Hugo just blowing smoke about military force in the Honduran thing? the capital to capital straight line distance is 1,390 miles (thank you google earth) He has MIG-29’s, but I’m not sure if they can reach there and back. And he can’t send the military overland since this means crossing a few borders to get there. Not sure what his navy can do. I would normally think he is blowing smoke about this, but his socialist economy gets worse by the day. Losers like him need conflict to keep the populace from bitching about the lousy economy. Any thoughts on actual military conflict over this?

As prescribed by the Honduran constitution, the president of congress, Roberto Michelleti, has already been sworn in as president. This was not a coup except in the minds of indoctrinated and lazy lefty journalists who don’t want to check the facts.
The military removed Zelaya under direct and lawful orders from the supreme court and the congress after he had attempted to stage an illegal election with foreign help and with the idea of extending his term. The meddling foreigner is Hugo Chavez, who hoped to see yet another member added to axis of dictators and is sorely disappointed that lawful authorities have prevented it.

UN General Assembly To Meet On Honduras Unrest Monday-Spokesman
UNITED NATIONS (AFP)—The U.N. General Assembly will meet in emergency session Monday to discuss the political unrest in Honduras, where President Manuel Zelaya was ousted and sent into exile in Costa Rica, a spokesman said Sunday.
General Assembly President Miguel D’Escoto Brockmann scheduled a meeting for noon (1600 GMT) Monday at the request of Honduran Ambassador to the U.N. Jorge Reina Idiaquez, D’Escoto’s spokesman Enrique Yeves said.

If he does interfere it will be by supplying arms (he was gifted about a million Ak’s and an AK factory by the neo-imperial Putin,) so he might send some irregular troops and specfors disguised as civilian Honduran insurgents. That’s if he thinks he has a shot. I doubt you would see air power or sea power used as our Fifth fleet stationed in FL (wise move on Bush’s part) could easily put an end to that.

The MiG-29 can’t reach that far. Venezuela has tankers, KC-130s, but they are probably grounded right now and wouldn’t be compatible with MiG refueling probes anyway. The Venezuelan navy is capable of operating over that distance, but without air cover they would very vulnerable to the small Honduran air force and anyone else who might decide to side with them. Honduran armed forces (for some reason, this excludes any details on the Honduran navy).
One possibility is that pro-Zelaya unions and other thugs could seize an airfield long enough for a sizable number of Chavez goons to be flown in, together with arms for their local allies. It would be a disaster for the Chavistas but Hugo probably doesn’t care about actual results so long as he can assert his leadership of the thug world.

2. apologize (even if the USA isn’t involved in any way, shape, or form)
3. punt to United Nations
4. offer to have talks
5. cut defense spending
6. Try the apology route again
7. ask the UN to get involved (again)
8. Time for some more talks
9. cut defense spending some more to pay for all the talks and bribing of UN to get them to even put the current issue on the UN agenda
10. apologize for every sin the US has ever done, even if what the US has done in the past has no bearing on the current crisis
11. form a ‘crisis group’ headed by sec-state to look tough
12. Hide under the bed and blame Sec-state when the S^&* hits the fan
***** repeat any/all steps as many times as necessary to avoid any real decision.
13. (optional) do the round of late night talk shows (or take kids out for custard) to get crisis off the news cycle

Not that you asked me, but someone else did a few weeks ago, with the proviso that they were made in my lifetime. Off the top of my head I came up with these three:
Jaws

The Natural

The so-called report rightly ought to have been filed in the circular file. No matter how much M.Malkin wants to make this a major political scandal, the substance of the report rightfully should have been overlooked.

re: #308 Lincolntf
Off the top of my head i would say:
Jaws
Close encounters of the 3rd kind
Star Wars
I picked these 3 becuase of the scenes below:
the scene in Jaws where Chief Brodie is chumming off the stern and the shark pops up to the surface, then he walks straight backwards into the pilot house to say “we’re gonna need a bigger boat’ is a unforgetable scene
In ‘close encounters’ when dryfus is in the electric company truck looking at the map figuring out where he is. and then over his shoulder you see what you think are a car’s headlights coming up behind the truck, and then they rise straight up.
The entire final battle and the scene where luke blows up the death star. This was the first movie I ever saw. i still remember that day

Understand, that leaves off such incredible films as Murder at the Vanities, The Big Broadcast of 1932, The War Wagon, The Wild Bunch, American Madness, and a whole stack of stuff by Capra and Sturges.
Vertigo

re: #316 buzzsawmonkey
Oh, gee, that’s tough.
Casablanca is probably the greatest Hollywood film ever made. For the other two, you’d have to go to categories:
Musical: 42nd Street and Swing Time
Gangster/Detective: Key Largo and The Maltese Falcon
Western: High Noon and El Dorado
Comedy: Million Dollar Legs and International House
Silent: The General and Greed
Mind you, these are just faves of the moment. I’m a little heavy on Bogart and WC Fields here, and I can think of any number of other films that would go in these categories, but these spring to mind off the top of my head.
of course…interesting in that I’d agree with those choices….thanks

Chavez threatens military action over Honduras coup
Venezuelan President Hugo Chavez on Sunday put troops on alert after a coup in Honduras and said he would respond militarily if his envoy to the Central American country was kidnapped or killed.
Chavez said on state television if his ambassador to Venezuela was killed, or if troops entered the Venezuelan Embassy, “that military junta would be entering a de facto state of war. We would have to act militarily … I have put the armed forces of Venezuela on alert.”
