Yeah, but that gunk can flow north in certain conditions. I recently saw the ranking of the most toxic beaches in California, and Redondo was not doing so well. Maybe not mostly due to the LA River, but other sewage outflows, and just the way Santa Monica Bay shunts all the bad stuff down towards Redondo and Torrance.

Captured U.S. soldier was 'sold' to local insurgent group; terrorists say they'll release video soon

An American soldier who went missing from a U.S. base in eastern Afghanistan was "sold" to a local militant group - which claims it will soon release a video of the captive and a list of demands, a U.S. military official said.

"Our leaders have not decided on the fate of this soldier," said a commander with the Taliban's hard-line Haqqani faction, according to Agence-France Press. "They will decide on his fate and soon we will present video tapes of the coalition soldier and our demand to media."

. . .

A U.S. military official, who spoke on condition of anonymity, said they noticed the enlisted soldier was missing during a routine check on Tuesday and was first listed as "duty status whereabouts unknown."

there are several other rivers/channels that do drain into the Bay, as well as the main sewage plant north of Redondo.... but, AIUI, part of the problem is that with it being back out of the SB channel because of the shape of the shoreline, it doesn't exchange water as well....

with the current running down the coast, i'd be amazed if anything from the LB area could get around PV and into the SM bay without a truck or pipeline being involved.

because water conducts heat away much more efficiently. you stay out in 50 degree weather long enough, without proper clothing and food, and you will get hypothermia.

Went back in the late 70's. YUCK!

Red Beach, on Camp Pendleton is nice, as long as you're not in uniform..... sometime you see cammo nets there, sometimes campers.

When I was a kid in England, the school had an outdoor pool, unheated.

We were not compelled to get into the water if it was less than 50 degrees--but everyone did, rather than look wimpy.

The English - they like their pools cold & their beer warm.

re: #93 redc1c4

there are several other rivers/channels that do drain into the Bay, as well as the main sewage plant north of Redondo.... but, AIUI, part of the problem is that with it being back out of the SB channel because of the shape of the shoreline, it doesn't exchange water as well....

with the current running down the coast, i'd be amazed if anything from the LB area could get around PV and into the SM bay without a truck or pipeline being involved.

Well, I was thinking of those other river/channels that flow directly into Santa Monica Bay, not the main outflow into Long Beach Harbor. Sorry for the confusion!

All I could think is that I was out there during the day.

Yikes. That's why I never swim without somebody bigger and fatter than I am. Figure if there's a close encounter I only have to outswim them.....not the shark.

Why does 50 degree water cause hypothermia, but not 50 degree air?

It takes more energy to heat the water, cooling the person more, and air acts as an insulator because it doesn't conduct heat well. That's why a wind is cooling - it removes the air that you heated and replaces it with cold air.

We've got more rain in the forecast here in the NYC metro area. We've had low pressure systems training over the region for the past month, dropping rain practically every day. More showers this AM, more on the way for the commute home. And June 2009 is one of the coolest on record in NYC (and one of the wettest).

Loud Sex Leads to Assault Charge for Four Teens, Police Say
Thursday, July 02, 2009

TORRINGTON, Conn. — Police say a Connecticut girl overheard her mother's screams during sex and thought she was being assaulted, so she rounded up some friends to attack the woman's companion.

The 16-year-old girl, two boys and a 19-year-old man were arrested Tuesday and arraigned Wednesday on assault and conspiracy charges.

According to Torrington police and the woman, the girl thought her mother was being attacked on June 6. Police say the teens went into the bedroom and beat the mother's 25-year-old companion with a baseball bat and punched him. The man, Roger Swanson of Torrington, says he suffered a black eye and several bruises.

The woman, Melanie Arnold, denies she screamed. She tells The Associated Press her daughter heard a slap and thought it was an assault.

Air France plane did not break up in flight - report

PARIS, France (CNN) -- The Air France plane that crashed a month ago off the coast of Brazil "did not break up or become destroyed in flight," but bellyflopped intact into the Atlantic Ocean, the French air investigation agency announced Thursday.

"The plane went straight down, almost vertically... towards the surface of the water, very very fast," air accident investigator Alain Bouillard said.

Based on visual study of the physical remains of the Airbus A330 that have been recovered, "we were able to see that the plane hit the surface of the water flat. Therefore everything was pushed upwards -- everything was pushed from the bottom to the top" of the plane, he said.

[...]

Air France 447 was unable to fly on autopilot at the time of the crash, the investigator said. That was because the autopilot was not receiving speed, wind or direction information, he said.

Hmm.

One possible cause that comes to mind is blocked pitot tubes. This has happened before; ground crews put tape over the pitot tubes when cleaning the aircraft; then forget to take the stuff off. Pilot doesn't check. Once airborne, the computer can't get accurate information based on air pressure and speed.

Presidential spokesman Robert Gibbs, himself a well-known virgin, sought to allay fears about the bill.

"Look, I know this bill has been the subject of wild rumors and speculation, but let's all just sit back and see how it plays out," said Gibbs. "The bottom line is that the virgin community has nothing to worry about. Believe me, if this thing passes, I promise everybody's going to get screwed."

They had been talking about iced-over pitot tubes because the ones on the aircraft hadn't been replaced. This is consistent with that, but not with terrorism, which would have made a hole in the aircraft causing it to come apart.

Jacksons' family puts the "d" in dysfunctional... the parents did a crap job raising the first set of kids, they were all messed up psychologically and emotionally. They have no absolutely business trying to raise their their grandkids.

It's totally gaggifying to have to watch MJ's parents and siblings circling around like vultures before he's even buried.

Someone needs to step in and have these kids moved into a stable (read: nondysfuctional) home. And that doesn't necessarily mean the home that has the most money, the best nannies that money can buy and the priciest bedroom furniture.

LOL! My older daughter adored dolls of all kinds. The younger one couldn't care less, but she would occasionally give Barbie a haircut, like your daughter. Oh, and then there was the time she used a Sharpie to give Barbie tribal tattoos. However, she did ask for a Ken doll once. I never quite knew what to make of that.

ROFL! Now that's funny.

It's not my computer, it's not my browser, all other websites are fine, fast and no delays.

I have the highest speed Comcast offers over cable.

It appears that it's graphics coming from LGF server is slowing things down. I can have a page render here, and I still see avatars coming in. Right now the message at the bottom of the page is (I use Safari) completed 250 of 253 items, meaning three elements of this page won't load.

My husband was hit by chronic vertigo about 18 years ago. He was on sick-leave for about 3 weeks while he relearned how to balance himself. His first day back at work went well. On the second day, his coworkers put everything in his office at an angle. He did fall over...laughing.

I had an odd experience similar to that several years ago. I had a pretty bad cold and blew my nose. All of a sudden the room started spinning. At the time, I was alone in my apartment I managed to sit down before I fell down.

So now I am sitting there thinking I am having a stroke or something and I need to get to a phone to dial 911. I am trying to figure out how to get to the phone without falling. After a minute or two I hear a squeaking sound from my ear as the pressure I had put on my ear by blowing my nose balances itself out. A couple seconds later I was back to normal. A very odd and scary experience...

Wait, this woman tried to sell the kids to Michael & she renounced custody.

Yea, once I had a chance to think about it, it made sence. The nerves in the ear control balance. Presure on the wrong nerves in there and there goes your balance. There are two similar exhibitions. One, as you said, was made with Chinese people, many of whom were thought to be political prisoners. The other, which I saw at the California Science Center in 2005, was made using individuals who consented and donated their bodies for that purpose. There were signs in the exhibit explaining where the bodies came from. It was actually fascinating and not as gross as I expected.

Obama Administration to Involve NSA in Defending Civilian Agency Networks

The Obama administration will proceed with a Bush-era plan to use National Security Agency assistance in screening government computer traffic on private-sector networks, with AT&T as the likely test site, according to three current and former government officials.

President Obama said in May that government efforts to protect computer systems from attack would not involve "monitoring private sector networks or Internet traffic" and Department of Homeland Security officials say that the new program will only scrutinize data going to or from government systems.

My family doctor was pushing me to go to med school. He came close to guaranteeing me he could get me into Tufts (I had good grades and test scores, so I was certainly qualified); I guess he gave them a lot of money.
When I said how medical stuff makes me nauseous, he said that I'd get used to it. When they started anatomy class and uncovered the cadaver, people passed out, but by the end, they were eating a sandwich with one hand and cutting the corpse with another.
I hope they remembered what was in each hand.

and it should come back with the IP address and who gave it to you.

The flier circulated this morning came out of a business division for conferences and events, and the newsroom was unaware of such communication. It went out before it was properly vetted, and this draft does not represent what the company’s vision for these dinners are, which is meant to be an independent, policy-oriented event for newsmakers.

As written, the newsroom could not participate in an event like this.

We do believe there is an opportunity to have a conferences and events business, and that The Post should be leading these conversations in Washington, big or small, while maintaining journalistic integrity. The newsroom will participate where appropriate.

I suspect it has to be...

1) My firewall and/or virus software is bothered by something trying to come down the pipe. But why just LGF. No other problems anywhere, any site, and video stream, not speed problems at all. If it was an ad server problem, then everyone should be having the same problem.

Only LGF.

Strange day. There has been a lot of the tail wagging the dog lately with quants doing program trades. On top of that its the day before a 3 day holiday and people bug out early.

I run Macs with Gatesware under Parallels. Works quite well. Also lets me play other stuff if I feel like it. OSX under OSX if I want to experiment with something.

Loud Sex Leads to Assault Charge for Four Teens, Police Say
Thursday, July 02, 2009
PrintShareThis

Ya can't make this stuff up?

Well...her motivations seem to have been good. Oh dear.

The affair only did what affair's do. It's the husband who is in trouble.

UN expert says Israeli seizure of aid ship a crime

Richard Falk, the United Nations special rapporteur on human rights in the Palestinian territories, said the move was part of Israel's "cruel blockade of the entire Palestinian population of Gaza" in violation of the Fourth Geneva Convention prohibiting any form of collective punishment against "an occupied people".

Falk, an American expert on international law, said Israel's two-year blockade of Hamas-ruled Gaza restricted vital supplies such as food, medicine and fuel to "bare subsistence levels".

The International Committee of the Red Cross (ICRC) said in a report this week that Israel was also halting entry to Gaza of building materials and spare parts needed to repair damage from its 22-day invasion late last December.

"Such a pattern of continuing blockade under these conditions amounts to such a serious violation of the Geneva Conventions as to constitute a continuing crime against humanity," Falk said in a statement released in Geneva.

I wonder if Dick's opinion would change if his neighborhood had to worry about rocket attacks, snipers and bombings.

Parallels 4 is a nice improvement over 3. It lets you access USB devices from the virtual machine. And it works with Fedora

Hows the volume? If all the pros have gone home, you might get a low volume/high price move day that corrects when the everyone start paying attention to the market again...

We are not borrowing money from the Chinese. The Chinese are investing in US TREASURY SECURITIES because they are a good safe investment. They cannot make demands and blackmail us because "we owe" them.
You'd think a movement based on fiscal responsibility could get a few basic facts correct about economics.

Seriously, Israel should take back Gaza. No other country would put up with that shit. And if the Russians complained, tell them "next time, we'll do to them what you did to Chechnya."

You are right...If it isn't a process issue It is probably a code load issue..
What about Malware? I see that shit everyday on the net...I've seen Malware slow down only popular sites and esp. Sharepoint security sites
because of the registry secure.x beehives in the registry....
what are you using for Malware?

You'd also think those in charge would have a few basic facts correct about economics, but I guess it doesn't quite always work out that way.

Walter, I had a problem with LGF some time ago that ended up being related to my antivirus software settings. You might try temporarily disabling your AV software to see if the page loads completely. If it does, there may be some settings in there causing the problem.
